    Hell Let Loose Vietnam Featured

    TL;DR

    • Make sure your game is fully updated — Hotfix 1 (August 18, 2026) fixed PS5 audio cutting out and improved voice chat.
    • Voice chat not working? Go to Options → Audio → Disconnect → Reconnect. This fixes most mid-match VOIP drop-offs.
    • No sound in-game on PC? Check that your correct audio device is set as the Default Communication Device in Windows Sound settings.
    • Robot or distorted voice in chat is usually caused by packet loss or jitter on your connection, not a game settings issue.
    • Mic not detected? Check Windows Privacy settings and confirm the game has microphone access.
    • Voice too quiet? Lower SFX volume to around 60-70% and keep Voice channels at 90-100%.
    • On console, check your NAT type — Strict or Moderate NAT frequently blocks in-game voice communication.
    • Proximity chat stuck open (broadcasting constantly) was a known beta bug — leaving and rejoining the server clears it.

Audio problems have been one of the more frustrating parts of Hell Let Loose Vietnam since the beta. The good news is that the team at Expression Games put a lot of work into audio fixes before and after launch, and Hotfix 1 shipped on August 18, 2026, clearing several of the worst issues. Not everything is perfect yet, but most bugs have a workaround you can try right now. This guide goes through every known audio problem and what actually fixes it. If you are also running into performance issues beyond audio, the best PC settings guide covers that side of things. For everything related to the game itself — modes, classes, factions — head to our Hell Let Loose Vietnam vs original comparison for a full breakdown.

    Update the Game First

Before anything else, make sure you are on the latest build. A lot of audio bug reports that still circulate online refer to the beta or the launch-day version, and several of those issues were fixed in Hotfix 1.

On PC, Steam and Epic update automatically, but it is worth double-checking in your library that no update is pending. On PS5 and Xbox, go to the game tile, check for updates, and install before launching. Troubleshooting audio on an older build wastes time when a patch may have already resolved it.

Voice Chat Not Working — PC Fixes

This is the most common audio complaint in the game. You load in, your push-to-talk key does nothing, no one can hear you, or you cannot hear anyone else.

    Step 1: Use the In-Game Disconnect/Reconnect Button

Go to Options → Audio and find the VOIP section. Hit Disconnect, wait a few seconds, then hit Reconnect. This forces a fresh handshake with the voice service and clears the most common drop-off that happens mid-match. It takes about ten seconds and fixes the issue more often than anything else on this list. If the Reconnect button is greyed out, leave the server and rejoin — that achieves the same fresh connection.

Step 2: Check Your Windows Sound Settings

Open the Windows Start menu, search for Sound settings, and open Sound Control Panel. On the Recording tab, find your actual microphone — the one you physically speak into. Right-click it and set it as the Default Communication Device. This matters because the game will grab whatever Windows offers as the communication device. If that is a webcam mic, a controller microphone, or a virtual audio cable from an old setup, the game will use that instead of your headset.

After changing the device, restart the game. Some audio routing does not update correctly while the game is already running.

Step 3: Check Windows Microphone Privacy

Open Windows Settings → Privacy and Security → Microphone. Make sure “Allow apps to access your microphone” is turned on, and check that Hell Let Loose Vietnam specifically appears in the list with access enabled. Windows sometimes blocks microphone access for new games automatically, and the game will not tell you this is happening — your push-to-talk key will just do nothing.

    Step 4: Check Push-to-Talk Bindings

The game has three separate voice channels, each with its own push-to-talk key. On PC the defaults are typically V for proximity, C for unit/squad, and X or a nearby key for command. Check in Options → Keybindings that these are still bound correctly — they can reset after updates or config changes. Also confirm you are holding the key long enough. The voice indicator appears in the bottom-left corner of the screen when you are transmitting. If no indicator shows up, the key is either wrong or the VOIP connection itself is the problem.

    Step 5: Close Competing Applications

Discord, TeamSpeak, and other apps that use your microphone can take exclusive control of the audio device and block the game from accessing it. Close any voice apps you are not actively using and test again. Also check that no other recording software — OBS, for example — is set to capture your microphone at the same time.

Step 6: Disable Exclusive Mode on Your Audio Device

Open Sound Control Panel → Recording tab → right-click your microphone → Properties → Advanced tab. Uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.” This prevents other software from locking the game out of your mic.

Voice Chat Not Working — Console Fixes (PS5 and Xbox)

    Check Your NAT Type

On console, a Strict or Moderate NAT type is one of the most common reasons in-game voice does not work. NAT issues block the UDP traffic that voice services use to route audio between players.

On PS5, go to Settings → Network → Connection Status and check NAT Type. You want Open (Type 1 or Type 2). Moderate or Strict often means your router is blocking ports. Enabling UPnP on your router is the easiest fix for most households — log into your router admin page and look for the UPnP setting under Network or Advanced settings.

On Xbox, go to Settings → General → Network Settings and check NAT Type under Current Network Status. The same fix applies.

    PS5 Headset Output Settings

On PS5, go to Settings → Sound → Audio Output. Make sure your headset is selected as the output device. If you are using a headset plugged into the controller, the game audio goes through it but party and in-game chat settings might route differently. Also check that the chat/game audio balance is not skewed so far toward game audio that voice chat becomes inaudible.

    Xbox Chat Mixer Settings

On Xbox, press the Xbox button, go to Profile and System → Settings → General → Volume and Audio Output. Find the Headset Chat Mixer and adjust the balance so chat audio is not drowned out by game audio. Set Party Chat Output to Headset if you are using one plugged into the controller.

    PS5 Audio Cutting Out Completely

This was a confirmed bug at launch where game audio would completely disappear on PS5 for a period of time. Expression Games fixed it in Hotfix 1 on August 18, 2026. If you are running the latest version and still experiencing complete audio drop-outs on PS5, a full power cycle of the console (not just rest mode — a full shutdown and restart) often clears it.

Robot or Distorted Voice in Chat

If teammates sound robotic, choppy, or metallic, this is almost always a network issue rather than a settings problem. Voice data in this game travels via UDP, which means lost packets are not resent. When your connection drops packets or experiences high jitter, the audio stream gets gaps that your system tries to fill — creating that robotic distortion effect.

The developers confirmed before launch that the robotic voice bug in Command and Squad chat was largely resolved, though it can still happen occasionally in Proximity chat. If the issue is widespread across all channels, check your internet connection first.

Things that help with robot voice: close background apps that use bandwidth (streaming, downloads, other games updating), connect via ethernet rather than WiFi if possible, and reboot your router if it has been running for a long time without a restart. WiFi interference from neighboring networks is one of the more common causes of the jitter that produces robotic audio.

Lowering your in-game voice volume settings slightly can also help clarity — if the incoming audio is being compressed and degraded at high volume, bringing it down a notch sometimes makes voices more intelligible.

No Sound In-Game (All Audio Gone)

If you have sound in the main menu but it disappears when you load into a match, the most common cause on PC is the game switching audio output device when VOIP connects. This is an old but recurring issue with audio routing in this engine. When the VOIP service connects, it sometimes redirects audio to a different device — often a bluetooth headset’s “hands-free” profile rather than its higher-quality “headphones” profile.

The fix: set your preferred audio device as the Default Communication Device AND the Default Playback Device in Windows Sound Control Panel. Having them set to different devices is what triggers the switch. If you use a bluetooth headset, make sure the stereo/headphones profile is selected rather than the hands-free profile, which degrades audio quality significantly.

If the sound issue started after a driver update, rolling back your audio drivers to the previous version sometimes resolves it. Right-click your audio device in Device Manager → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver.

    Mic Not Detected at All

If the game shows no microphone input and voice options are greyed out, the game cannot see your mic at the system level.

Check these in order. First, confirm the mic physically works in another application — a browser, Discord, or Windows’ built-in voice recorder. If it works there but not in the game, the issue is a permission or device selection problem rather than hardware. Second, run through the Windows Privacy settings check described in the PC voice fix section above. Third, verify that your mic is not muted at the hardware level — many headsets have an inline mute button or a switch on the earcup that is easy to leave engaged. Fourth, try a different USB port if your headset is USB. Some ports lose connection intermittently and the game picks this up as no device found.

If you have tried all of this and the game still does not detect a mic, there is a known fix from the original Hell Let Loose that also works in Vietnam. Delete the local game data folder at C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\HLL (note: AppData is a hidden folder — enable “Show hidden items” in File Explorer to find it). The game regenerates this folder on next launch. You will need to redo your settings and keybinds after, but it clears corrupted audio configuration that can block mic detection.

Voice Too Quiet — Others Can’t Hear You or You Can’t Hear Them

If voice chat works but is so quiet it is unusable, there are a few things to check.

For teammates not hearing you well: go into Windows Sound settings, select your microphone, go to Properties, and check the Levels tab. Microphone volume should be at 100 and mic boost at +20dB if your mic supports it. Also check your in-game Microphone Volume slider — it defaults to a moderate level but can be bumped up.

For not being able to hear teammates: the most common cause is game sound effects drowning out voice chat. Helicopter noise, gunfire, and explosions are loud and can make voice audio inaudible unless you balance the mix properly. In the Audio settings, drop SFX Volume to around 60-70% and set all Voice Volume channels (Squad, Command, Proximity) to 90-100%. This keeps voices audible without reducing the positional audio cues you need to locate enemies.

Also check: Master Volume at 100, Music at 40 or lower. Music adds atmosphere but contributes nothing to gameplay and eats into the audio budget.

Proximity Chat Stuck Open (Broadcasting Constantly)

This bug causes proximity chat to stay open and transmit everything you say or your ambient microphone picks up, without you holding the push-to-talk key. It became notorious during the open beta.

The fix mid-match is to disconnect and reconnect VOIP through Options → Audio. If that does not work, leave the server and rejoin. Rejoining forces a fresh VOIP session and clears the stuck state.

If it keeps happening repeatedly, check whether another application has mapped the same key and is sending a continuous “held” signal. OBS, Discord, or macro software can sometimes hold a key state that the game reads as push-to-talk being held down.

    Helicopter Audio Too Loud

This has been a known balance issue. The UH-1 Huey helicopter sound effect was too loud at certain distances, making it hard to hear anything else on maps where helicopters are active. The team made adjustments to helicopter SFX in the road-to-launch update, and further tuning was included in Hotfix 1.

If helicopter audio is still overwhelming after updating, lowering SFX Volume to 60-70% in the Audio settings reduces the helicopter noise while keeping most other sounds at a useful level. Some players also use Windows’ Loudness Equalization feature — found in the Enhancements tab of your headphone properties in Sound Control Panel — which compresses the loudest sounds and brings up quieter ones. It slightly reduces positional audio accuracy but makes the overall mix easier to manage when helicopters are constantly overhead.

    Recommended Audio Settings

For players not sure where to start, these settings give good balance between gameplay audio and voice clarity:

    • Master Volume: 100
    • SFX Volume: 70 (lowers helicopter and explosion noise without killing footsteps)
    • Music Volume: 30–40 (keeps atmosphere without competing with audio cues)
    • Voice Volume (all channels): 90–100
    • Microphone Volume: 50–60 (adjust based on teammate feedback)
    • Mute on Focus Loss: On (stops sound playing when you alt-tab)

In a game where you are fighting through dense jungle and enemies are often invisible before they shoot, sound is your most reliable early warning. Footsteps, reload sounds, and the crack of a nearby shot all give you information that the visual environment hides. Getting your audio balanced correctly is not just about comfort — it genuinely affects how often you get caught off guard.

When the Bug Is on Their End, Not Yours

Some voice issues are server-side or related to the Epic Online Services voice infrastructure rather than anything you can fix locally. The developers noted before launch that robotic voice in Proximity Chat was still tied to an EOS update from Epic that was not yet available — meaning it required a platform fix, not a player fix.

When voice suddenly gets worse across a whole server at the same time, or when many players report the same distortion simultaneously, it is almost always a server or service issue rather than individual settings. In those cases, the only options are to wait it out, leave and find a different server, or use an external voice solution like a Discord call with your squad.

For more on how voice channels work and which button switches between squad, proximity, and command chat, the squad communication tips guide covers the full system. For console-specific setup, including NAT settings and headset routing on PS5 and Xbox, the console guide has the details.
