Hell Let Loose Vietnam Huế Outskirts is the launch map that gives you the widest range of combat environments in a single match. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam built Huế Outskirts around the Tet Offensive of January 1968 — one of the most dramatic turning points of the entire war. The map is set around the outskirts of the city of Hue as US forces push to recapture it from NVA control. That premise shapes the terrain: you move through mountainous farmland, push into dense jungle sections, and fight through claustrophobic concrete industrial complexes all within the same match. No two sectors play the same way, and adapting your tactics as the terrain changes is the skill that separates good players from great ones on this map.
Historical Background: The Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue
The Tet Offensive, launched in January 1968, was a series of coordinated surprise attacks by the NVA and Viet Cong against US and South Vietnamese forces across South Vietnam. It was one of the largest military campaigns of the war and a decisive moment that shifted public opinion in the United States.
The Battle of Hue was one of the longest and bloodiest engagements of the entire offensive. NVA forces occupied the city and US Marines fought for weeks to recapture it in brutal urban and suburban combat. The fighting moved through streets, buildings, and the surrounding countryside — exactly the mix of terrain that Huế Outskirts recreates in the game. The map does not place you inside Hue proper, but on its outskirts as the US force approaches. The implication is clear: the city lies ahead, and the NVA will make the approach as costly as possible.

Map Overview: Terrain and Key Zones
Huế Outskirts is defined by its environmental variety. No single terrain type dominates the whole map. The battle flows through distinct zones that each require different weapons, roles, and tactics. Understanding where each zone is and how to fight in it is the foundation of playing this map well.
Mountainous Terrain and Terraced Farms
The outer sections of the map are shaped by mountainous terrain and terraced farmland. The terraced farms create dramatic elevation changes — a team holding the higher terraces has line of sight over the lower approaches and can fire down on advancing infantry with relative impunity. These open elevated sections are where US long-range weapons have the clearest advantage on the map. The M16A1, M14, and M60 machine gun all perform well across terraced farm approaches where engagement distances stretch beyond what NVA close-range loadouts are optimised for.
Crossing from a lower terrace to a higher one without cover is dangerous. The elevation difference is enough that even infantry without dedicated sniper roles can fire downward on exposed climbers effectively. Smoke, suppression from a Machine Gunner, or a coordinated rush from multiple angles are all ways to break a terrace defence. Going straight up the middle alone is not.
Dense Jungle Sections
Jungle sections run through the map and connect the more open farmland with the industrial areas. These are the most NVA-friendly zones on the map. Dense thickets, massive bushes, and tight tree coverage shrink sightlines to a fraction of what they are on the terraced farms. Players who fought through the game’s jungle maps will feel at home here — slow movement, careful listening for footsteps, and the constant awareness that an enemy could be within ten meters and invisible until they fire.
One tank crewman who fought through the jungle sections of Huế Outskirts described trying to navigate while the average tree disrupted the tank’s sightlines, making targeting an arduously slow task. Tanks are significantly less effective in these sections than in the open farmland. Infantry must screen armour through jungle zones rather than expecting armour to lead the way.
The dense thickets make Huế Outskirts one of the best maps in the game for sniper concealment. A patient sniper running parallel to the team’s advance — maintaining a sightline into objectives from the jungle edge while the rest of the squad pushes — can make a meaningful difference by picking off entrenched enemies and tunnel builders without being visible themselves.
Concrete Industrial Areas and Urban Sections
The industrial complexes and urban sections are where Huế Outskirts earns its reputation for claustrophobic close-quarters combat. Large concrete buildings, factory interiors, and heavily defended US base structures create enclosed fighting zones that feel completely different from the open farmland or jungle on the same map.
Huế Outskirts is described as shifting from vertical combat to cramped, close-quarters engagements in heavily defended industrial areas — and that is an accurate description of how these sections play. The concrete walls and structural cover eliminate long sightlines entirely. NVA weapons — the AK-47, K50M submachine gun, RPD machine gun, and shotgun — are all built for exactly this kind of short-range, high-damage fighting. The advantage that US long-range weapons provide on the terraced farms disappears inside a factory interior where the engagement distance is five meters.
The industrial sections are also the most dangerous zones for tunnel placement from the NVA perspective — and the most valuable. A tunnel inside an industrial building is almost impossible for US forces to clear without committing an entire squad to the building and exposing themselves to fire from multiple angles. Get a tunnel inside the factory early and it becomes one of the most durable spawn anchors on the map.
Waterways
Waterways snake through the jungle sections and connect the different terrain zones. They are accessible routes for patrol boats moving troops between sectors and for infantry using water movement to flank around entrenched positions. The waterways on Huế Outskirts are not as central to the map as on Van Tuong or Cam Ranh Port, but ignoring them is a mistake.
A patrol boat moving through a jungle waterway can deposit a squad in a position that bypasses both the terraced farm approaches and the industrial front door, emerging in a sector the enemy is not watching. Use the waterways as flanking tools rather than highways — move quickly through them and exit before drawing attention.
How to Win as US Armed Forces on Huế Outskirts
Use Helicopters to Take Elevated Farm Sectors
The terraced farms are the US faction’s strongest ground on Huế Outskirts, but assaulting uphill on foot against a defended higher terrace is costly. Helicopter insertions directly onto elevated farm objectives bypass that problem entirely.
A helicopter that inserts a squad onto the top terrace while the NVA is defending the lower approach puts US troops in the dominant position without a single uphill assault. The NVA then has to attack uphill to clear the objective, which is exactly the disadvantage you want to impose on them. Vary your landing zones across different terrace sections — a predictable insertion route will be met with RPG teams waiting on the next approach.
Use Long-Range Weapons on Open Farmland
The terraced farms and mountainous sections are where the US weapon advantage is clearest. Position your Machine Gunner on elevated ground overlooking lower approaches. Use the M14 for precision fire at range across open terraces. Keep your Riflemen moving in coordinated groups rather than individually — open farmland punishes isolated soldiers who have no mutual support when they come under fire.
The M40 sniper rifle can be devastating on the farm sections. A Recon squad running parallel to the main advance in the jungle edge, maintaining sightlines into the farm objectives, can identify and eliminate NVA defenders that the main infantry push cannot see. One reviewer specifically ran this tactic on the Huế Outskirts and described it as genuinely useful on this map in a way that sniper roles often are not.
Clear the Industrial Sections Carefully
Do not charge into industrial interiors expecting long-range weapons to keep working. Switch your approach when the map transitions into factory and urban terrain. Coordination matters more than individual skill in enclosed industrial spaces.
Clear buildings systematically. Grenades before entry. Two soldiers covering intersections while the rest advance. Every room and corridor is a potential ambush position, and the NVA’s close-quarters weapons have the upper hand in these spaces. The US side’s advantage in industrial areas is coordination and numbers — using both properly is what wins engagements that close-range NVA loadouts are otherwise designed to win.
Check for NVA tunnel exits inside industrial buildings before assuming an area is secured. A tunnel entrance in the corner of a factory building can respawn NVA soldiers directly into what the US team considers cleared ground. Clear the building, then have an Engineer sweep for tunnel infrastructure.
Use Waterways for Flanking Pushes
The waterways through the jungle sections are useful for putting squads into unexpected positions on the flanks of defended sectors. A small squad using a patrol boat through jungle waterways while the main force engages frontally creates a two-axis threat that forces NVA defenders to split their attention.
Do not use the waterways as a primary advance route for large groups — patrol boats are loud and visible enough that a determined NVA RPG team watching a waterway can counter them effectively. Use them for stealth flanks with small squads, not as highway transport for your whole team.
How to Win as NVA on Huế Outskirts
Own the Industrial Interiors
The concrete industrial areas and urban sections are the NVA’s strongest ground on Huế Outskirts. Your weapons, your camouflage, and your tunnel network all perform at their best in enclosed, short-range environments. Get into the industrial areas early and make them as costly as possible for the US side to contest.
NVA tunnel placement inside factory buildings and industrial structures is one of the most powerful tactics on this map. A tunnel entrance inside a concrete building is extremely difficult to locate and clear. It produces soldiers directly behind the US forward line, disrupts supply runs, destroys Garrisons, and forces US squads to turn around and fight threats from inside positions they thought were safe. If you can place one tunnel inside the industrial section and keep it alive, it can anchor your whole defensive line on that part of the map.
Use Jungle Sections for Movement and Ambush
The jungle sections are your highway between the open farmland and the industrial areas. Move through them in groups and use the dense thickets for ambush positions on US squads trying to transition from the farms into the industrial zone.
The jungle edge where it meets the open farmland is the single most dangerous place for US infantry on this map. An NVA squad waiting in the jungle tree line while US forces cross open terraced ground can open fire at short range with little warning, take casualties, and retreat back into the concealment before US long-range fire can pin them down. This ambush pattern — fire from the jungle edge, withdraw before the US can respond, repeat — is the NVA playstyle in microcosm and works particularly well on Huế Outskirts’s terrain.
Build Tunnels Across Terrain Zones
Huế Outskirts’s variety of terrain is an opportunity for the NVA tunnel network. Build a three-tier structure that spans the different zones — a primary tunnel near the active sector, a secondary tunnel deeper in the jungle connecting to the industrial area, and a tertiary option near a waterway crossing for flanking potential.
The most valuable tunnel positions on this map are inside or immediately adjacent to the industrial structures. The second most valuable are in the jungle sections near the transition points between terrain zones, where emerging from a tunnel allows you to appear at range in positions US squads expect to control. The least valuable are on open terraced farmland — open terrain means a tunnel entrance is easier for US forces to spot and neutralise.
Use NVA Weapons Where They Work Best
This sounds obvious but the terrain on Huế Outskirts rewards weapon selection more than most maps. In the industrial sections and jungle interiors, the AK-47, K50M, RPD, and shotgun are all performing at their natural range. Push the close-quarters engagements. Force fights inside buildings and in dense thickets where your weapons are equal to or better than US loadouts.
In the open farmland sections, the NVA is at a weapon disadvantage. Avoid extended engagements at range on open terraces unless you have elevated cover or jungle edge proximity. If US forces hold the high terraces, do not assault them frontally — outflank through the jungle or use a tunnel to emerge above them rather than charging uphill against M16s and M60s.
Counter Helicopter Insertions on Farm Sectors
The US helicopter is its most effective tool for taking terraced farm objectives without uphill assaults. Position your Grenadier near likely landing zones on the higher farm sections and watch for helicopter approaches. The approach is the most vulnerable moment — a helicopter low and slow over a terrace is exposed, and a clean RPG shot during the final approach can prevent an entire squad insertion before it happens.
Communicate helicopter positions immediately. The second a squad hears a Huey approaching the farm sectors, the Grenadier and any anti-aircraft role should be redirected to intercept. An NVA Commander who uses the surface-to-air missile strike when the US is making aggressive helicopter pushes onto the terraced farms can force pilots to altitude and deny the insertion advantage that makes the farms so hard to hold against US aerial tactics.
General Tips for Both Factions
Adapt your weapons to the terrain zone you are in. Huế Outskirts punishes players who do not switch approach between the farms, the jungle, and the industrial areas. Long-range weapons on the farms, patience and short-range tools in the jungle, coordination and grenades in the industrial sections. One approach does not work everywhere.
Armour needs infantry escort through the jungle sections. Trees and dense vegetation disrupt tank sightlines severely on this map. A tank advancing alone through jungle terrain without infantry screening will be ambushed by NVA soldiers who can approach within RPG range before the crew spots them. Keep infantry immediately around armour when moving through any section with heavy tree coverage.
Dense thickets are worth using deliberately. Both factions can benefit from concealment in the thicket sections. Take a moment before crossing open ground to check whether the thicket edge nearby has enemy players using it for cover. If you are the one in the thicket, use it — crouch-crawl into position and wait for targets rather than pushing out into open farmland where you lose the concealment advantage.
Watch for enemies you cannot see. On Huế Outskirts, being shot by a player concealed in undergrowth from 150 to 200 meters is a real and common experience. NVA camouflage in jungle sections genuinely reduces visibility to uncomfortable levels. Move slowly at jungle edges and use your audio cues — footsteps and weapon sounds — before committing to crossing exposed ground. The map rewards patience and situational awareness more than any other single skill.
Waterways are often forgotten. Both teams tend to focus on the obvious terrain — the farms and the industrial areas — and let the waterway flanks go unwatched. Keep one squad aware of waterway routes, especially during sector transitions when the main force is focused on a contested objective.
