    Trial Chambers Minecraft

    TL;DR

    • Trial Chambers are underground structures added in Minecraft 1.21, built from copper and tuff.
    • They generate between Y=-40 and Y=-20, roughly one per 34×34 chunk region.
    • The fastest way to find one is buying a Trial Explorer Map from a Journeyman Cartographer villager.
    • You can also use the /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers command with cheats enabled.
    • Inside, defeat Trial Spawners to earn Trial Keys, then use keys to open Vaults for loot.
    • The rarest rewards — including the Heavy Core needed to craft the Mace — come from Ominous Vaults.

Trial Chambers are one of the best mid-game additions Minecraft has ever seen. They are massive underground dungeons full of unique mobs, clever traps, and loot locked behind a combat challenge system. Unlike most structures, you cannot just walk in, grab a chest, and leave. You have to earn the rewards here.

This guide covers everything. How to find them, what to bring, how the spawner and vault system works, how to handle the Breeze, and how to unlock the hardest mode for the best loot in the game.

    What Are Trial Chambers?

Trial Chambers are procedurally generated underground structures introduced in Minecraft 1.21 (the Tricky Trials update). Every chamber is different — the layout, rooms, and even which mobs spawn inside are randomised — but they all follow the same core structure and mechanics.

They are built almost entirely from copper blocks and tuff bricks. The copper gives them a distinctive green-orange colour underground and makes them easy to spot once you break through into one while caving.

Trial Chambers are the only place in the game where you can find:

    • Trial Spawners — the unique spawners that scale with player count
    • Vaults — locked reward containers opened with Trial Keys
    • The Breeze — a mob found nowhere else in Minecraft
    • Breeze Rods — needed to craft Wind Charges and the Mace
    • The Heavy Core — the exclusive ingredient for crafting the Mace weapon
    • Wind Burst enchanted books — only found here
    • Exclusive armor trims — the Bolt and Flow patterns

If you want the Mace — one of the most powerful new weapons added to Minecraft — you cannot get it anywhere else. Trial Chambers are required.

    Where Do Trial Chambers Generate?

Trial Chambers generate underground in the Overworld. The starting room spawns between Y=-40 and Y=-20, but the rest of the structure can extend further in any direction from there. Most of the rooms sit between Y=-20 and Y=0, deep in the deepslate layer.

They never generate exposed to the surface. You will not stumble onto one just walking around — you need to go underground.

In terms of how often they appear: the game uses a grid of 34×34 chunk regions. One Trial Chamber generates in each region at a random location within it. That means they are spread somewhat evenly across the world, but can still be hundreds or even thousands of blocks away depending on where you are.

One important note: Trial Chambers only generate in chunks that did not exist before Minecraft 1.21. If you have an old world from before 1.21, the areas you had already explored will not have them. You need to travel to unexplored territory — new chunks — to find them.

How to Find a Trial Chamber — All Methods

Method 1 — Trial Explorer Map (Best and Easiest)

This is the fastest way. Buy a Trial Explorer Map from a Journeyman-level (Level 3) Cartographer villager.

The map costs 12 emeralds and 1 compass and shows the exact location of the nearest Trial Chamber relative to that Cartographer. The map always points to the closest chamber that does not already have a map pointing to it, so each Cartographer’s maps point to a unique location.

How to get a Journeyman Cartographer:

A Cartographer needs a Cartography Table as their job block. If you do not have one, see our Cartography Table guide to craft and place one near an unemployed villager.

Trade with the Cartographer through their first levels — Novice and Apprentice — to unlock the Journeyman tier. Once they hit Level 3, the Trial Explorer Map appears in their trades.

If you have a villager trading hall already set up, add a Cartographer slot specifically for explorer maps. It is one of the most useful trades in mid-game.

    Using the map:

Open the map in your hand. You will see your player icon and a marker for the Trial Chamber. Walk toward the marker. When you are standing directly above the marker, dig straight down carefully — the chamber entrance is somewhere below you between Y=-20 and Y=-40.

Do not dig straight down without checking for lava below. Dig staircases or use a water bucket to descend safely.

Method 2 — Cave Exploration (No Resources Needed)

If you do not have emeralds or a Cartographer yet, you can find Trial Chambers by exploring deep cave systems. Look for the deepslate layer, which starts around Y=0 and goes down.

While caving, watch for the distinctive copper and tuff block walls of a Trial Chamber intersecting with a cave. The copper gives off a green-tinted glow from Copper Bulbs — that is your signal to investigate.

This method is slower and unpredictable, but it works well alongside other mining goals like finding diamonds or mining Ancient Debris for Netherite. You might stumble onto one while doing other things.

    Method 3 — /locate Command (Cheats Only)

If cheats are enabled on your world, open the chat and type:

    /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers

The game returns the coordinates of the nearest Trial Chamber. You can then use /tp to teleport directly there, or navigate manually.

Important: Using commands in a world that has achievements enabled will disable achievements for that world permanently on some platforms. If achievements matter to you, use the Cartographer map method instead.

On Bedrock Edition with Realms, the Realm owner must have cheats enabled for this to work. Check our Minecraft Realms setup guide for how to manage cheats in Realm settings.

Method 4 — Seed Tools (Chunkbase)

If you know your world seed, you can use external tools like Chunkbase to map out exactly where every Trial Chamber in your world generates. Enter your seed, select your edition (Java or Bedrock) and version (1.21+), and the tool shows all Trial Chamber locations on an overhead map.

This gives you a complete picture without using any in-game commands.

What to Bring — Gear Checklist

Trial Chambers are a genuine mid-game combat challenge. Do not go in unprepared. The mobs scale to your presence, traps fire unexpectedly, and the Breeze can send you flying into hazards.

    Recommended gear:

    • Full diamond armor with Protection IV if possible — iron armor works but leaves you vulnerable
    • A diamond sword with Sharpness V
    • A bow or crossbow with plenty of arrows — essential for fighting from range
    • A shield — blocks arrows, Breeze wind charges, and dispenser projectiles
    • Plenty of cooked food — steak, golden carrots, or pork chops
    • A water bucket — stops fall damage and helps if you get knocked into lava
    • Milk buckets — removes poison from Bogged skeleton arrows
    • Blocks for cover — cobblestone or dirt to build shelters quickly inside rooms
    • Torches — light up corridors to help navigate and spot mobs
    • Ender Pearls — escape routes and reaching high vault locations

If you are attempting Ominous Trials (the hard mode), also bring potions — see the Ominous section below.

Having your Netherite armor ready before tackling Trial Chambers on Hard difficulty makes the experience significantly more comfortable. The Breeze’s wind charges plus Bogged poison plus other mobs all at once is brutal without good gear.

    Trial Chambers in Minecraft

What Is Inside a Trial Chamber?

Every Trial Chamber is procedurally generated, meaning no two look exactly alike. But they all share the same types of rooms and features.

    The Entrance

The main entrance is a large room with a 3×3 doorway made of oxidised copper and copper blocks. It is usually the safest spot to enter from and a good place to set up a base of operations before going deeper.

    Corridors

Long hallways connecting all the rooms. Corridors often have Trial Spawners at three different heights. Clearing the corridor spawners first is smart — the corridor connects everything, so you want it clear before exploring branches.

    Chambers (Combat Rooms)

The main combat rooms. Each chamber is larger than a corridor and contains multiple Trial Spawners and at least one Vault — plus one Ominous Vault. These are the toughest rooms and the main source of Trial Keys.

    Hallways

Smaller branching passages with staircases and sometimes chests. Good for finding supply loot and catching your breath.

    Atrium

A large open room that connects multiple corridors. The Atrium always has one Ominous Vault at a high point — often requiring jumping or building to reach.

    Bedrooms / Intersections

Safer areas with beds. These are rest spots deliberately built into the structure. Set your spawn point here before going deeper so you respawn nearby if things go wrong.

    How Trial Spawners Work

Trial Spawners are the core mechanic of Trial Chambers. They look like regular spawners but with a distinctly different appearance — and they work very differently.

    Key things to know:

    • A Trial Spawner does not activate until a player is within range and has line of sight to it. You can position yourself carefully to activate only one spawner at a time.
    • The number of mobs it spawns scales with the number of players in range. Solo players face fewer mobs. Groups face more. This makes Trial Chambers genuinely better with friends.
    • Each Trial Spawner has a maximum total mob count. Once all mobs have been defeated, the spawner drops loot and a 50% chance of a Trial Key, then enters a 30-minute cooldown before it can activate again.
    • Natural hostile mob spawning is disabled inside Trial Chambers. Every mob you encounter comes from a Trial Spawner — no random cave spawns to worry about.

Four mob categories spawn from Trial Spawners:

The Breeze is guaranteed to appear in certain chambers and has its own spawner category. The other three categories — melee, small melee, and ranged — each have one mob type selected per structure at world generation. That means every Trial Chamber has a consistent mob theme, with the specific mobs (zombie, husk, spider, skeleton, etc.) depending on your world.

    The Mobs You Will Face

    The Breeze

The Breeze is the signature mob of Trial Chambers. It spawns nowhere else in Minecraft.

It looks like a small floating creature with a whirling wind effect. It attacks by launching Wind Charges — projectile blasts that deal knockback but very little direct damage. The danger is not the hit itself but where you end up. Wind Charges knock you into walls, traps, lava, or other mobs.

Critical tip: Do not shoot arrows at the Breeze. It deflects projectiles back at you. Fight it with melee or use Wind Charges of your own once you craft some.

When killed, the Breeze drops 0–2 Breeze Rods (more with the Looting enchantment). These are essential for crafting Wind Charges and the Mace weapon. Kill every Breeze you encounter and pick up the rods.

    The Bogged

A new skeleton variant found in Trial Chambers, especially in swampy or damp-themed rooms. It looks like a regular skeleton covered in moss and dripping plants.

The Bogged shoots poison arrows. Poison bypasses armor’s protection value and deals damage over time. Keep milk buckets on hand to cure poison instantly. If you run out of milk, be aware that Poison cannot kill you — it leaves you at half a heart — but it makes every other hit potentially lethal.

    Standard Mobs

Depending on your world’s chamber configuration, you will face some combination of:

    • Zombies / Husks — standard melee. Husks cause Hunger on hit.
    • Spiders / Cave Spiders — Cave Spiders are faster and inflict Poison.
    • Skeletons / Strays — Strays shoot Slowness-tipped arrows.
    • Slimes / Silverfish — annoying in groups. Silverfish burst out of infested blocks.

Traps — What to Watch Out For

Trial Chambers have environmental hazards built in. These are not just mob fights — they are designed to test your situational awareness.

Dispenser traps: Dispensers mounted in walls and ceilings can fire arrows, fire charges, snowballs, and splash potions. They activate when the Breeze uses Wind Charges near them or when you accidentally press a button on the wall. Always check walls for dispensers before standing in one spot.

The Breeze as a trap trigger: The Breeze deliberately activates dispenser buttons with its Wind Charges. This is intentional design — the Breeze creates chaos that empowers the room’s built-in traps. Kill the Breeze first in every room you enter.

Knockback into hazards: Many chambers have drop-offs, lava pockets, or tight corridors. Getting knocked back by a Wind Charge can send you off a ledge. Build barriers or fight with your back to a wall whenever possible.

Trial Keys and Vaults — The Reward System

When a Trial Spawner is cleared, it drops items directly on the ground including a 50% chance of a Trial Key. Pick up every Trial Key you find — they are one-use items for opening Vaults.

    Standard Vaults

Golden vault blocks found throughout the Trial Chamber. Insert a Trial Key by right-clicking (Java) or tapping (Bedrock) the vault with a key in your hand. The vault spits out a selection of 3–6 items from its loot pool. Each vault can only be opened once per player — but every player in your group can open the same vault with their own key and get their own loot.

    Standard Vault loot includes:

    • Emeralds and Emerald Blocks
    • Iron ingots and Iron Blocks
    • Enchanted books (including rare ones)
    • Golden apples
    • Saddles and Horse Armor
    • Ominous Bottles
    • Exclusive armor trims — Bolt and Flow patterns
    • Exclusive banner patterns — Guster and Flow
    • Exclusive music discs
    • Diamond gear

    Ominous Vaults

A rarer, harder-to-reach vault type surrounded by red candles and red glazed terracotta. They have a skull face on the front instead of the golden face of standard vaults. These require Ominous Trial Keys — you cannot open them with regular Trial Keys.

Ominous Vaults hold the rarest loot in Trial Chambers, including:

    • The Heavy Core — the only ingredient for crafting the Mace. Cannot be obtained anywhere else.
    • Blocks of Diamond
    • Enchanted golden apples
    • Wind Burst enchanted books
    • High-level enchanted diamond gear
    • Even rarer armor trims

Ominous Trials — The Hard Mode

Normal Trial Chambers are challenging. Ominous Trials are brutal — but the rewards are worth it.

How to Trigger an Ominous Trial

You need the Bad Omen status effect when you enter a Trial Chamber. When a player with Bad Omen walks near a Trial Spawner, it converts to an Ominous Trial Spawner with blue flames. This is called the Trial Omen effect.

How to get Bad Omen in Minecraft 1.21+: Drink an Ominous Bottle. You can find Ominous Bottles as loot from standard Vaults or by killing a Pillager Captain (the one carrying a banner). Do not drink it until you are ready to enter the Trial Chamber.

You no longer automatically get Bad Omen from killing a Pillager Captain — you have to actually drink the bottle.

    What Changes in Ominous Mode

Every Trial Spawner in the chamber becomes an Ominous Spawner. The changes:

    • Mobs spawn with armor and weapons — chainmail up to diamond gear with enchantments, depending on luck
    • More mobs spawn overall
    • Special effects on mobs — including Infestation (silverfish burst out when the mob takes damage) and Wind Charging (wind charges fire on death)
    • Mobs are faster and more aggressive

Completing an Ominous Trial Spawner gives a 30% chance of an Ominous Trial Key instead of a regular one. Use Ominous Trial Keys on Ominous Vaults for the top-tier loot pool.

What to Bring for Ominous Trials

Beyond the standard gear list, add:

    • Potions of Healing — pop these mid-fight when things get dangerous
    • Potions of Strength — shorter fights mean less time taking damage
    • Splash Potions of Weakness — useful for controlling armored mobs
    • Feather Falling IV boots — the Breeze plus armored mobs knocking you around is very dangerous

Having full Netherite armor with Protection IV before attempting Ominous Trials on Hard difficulty is strongly recommended. Going in with diamond is possible but significantly riskier.

How to Navigate Trial Chambers Efficiently

Trial Chambers are large and easy to get lost in. Here is how experienced players approach them.

Mark explored rooms. Use blocks that do not naturally appear in Trial Chambers — dirt, cobblestone, planks — to mark doorways you have already cleared. The structure uses copper and tuff everywhere, so any other block colour stands out immediately.

Clear the corridor first. The central corridor connects all other areas. Clearing the spawners there first gives you a safe path to retreat along when things go badly in a chamber.

Build a shelter in combat rooms. Before activating a Trial Spawner, place a few blocks behind you as cover. The Breeze in particular needs line of sight to use Wind Charges. A cobblestone barrier lets you duck behind cover and recover.

Use the beds. Intersection rooms have beds deliberately placed inside the structure. Set your spawn there. If you die, you respawn in the chamber rather than at your base — keeping all your progress.

Do not panic-sprint. Trial Chambers have dispenser traps and drop-offs everywhere. Moving carefully and checking walls before advancing prevents most accidental deaths.

Fight one spawner at a time. Activating multiple spawners simultaneously is a fast way to die. The spawner only activates when you have line of sight to it. Peek around corners and use blocks to break sightlines if needed.

Crafting the Mace — The Trial Chamber’s Signature Weapon

The Mace is the signature weapon of the Trial Chambers update. It is a powerful melee weapon that deals massive bonus damage when you fall from height — the further you fall before hitting, the more damage it deals on impact.

    Mace recipe:

    • 1 Heavy Core + 1 Breeze Rod = 1 Mace (crafted at a crafting table, Heavy Core on top, Breeze Rod below)

    Where to get the components:

    • Heavy Core — Ominous Vaults only. You must complete Ominous Trials and use Ominous Trial Keys on Ominous Vaults.
    • Breeze Rod — dropped by the Breeze. Collect these every time you kill one.

The Mace pairs naturally with Elytra. Get airborne using your Elytra and firework rockets, dive toward a target, and hit at the bottom of your fall for massive damage. Against the Warden or other tough mobs, a well-timed Mace strike from height can deal extraordinary damage. See our Warden guide if you are planning that fight.

Mace enchantments exclusive to Trial Chambers:

    • Density — increases damage per falling block
    • Breach — reduces target’s armor effectiveness
    • Wind Burst — creates a wind burst on hit, launching you back into the air for a follow-up strike

These enchantments can only be found as books inside Trial Chamber Vaults and Ominous Vaults.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do Trial Chambers regenerate or reset?

No. Once a Trial Spawner is cleared, it enters a 30-minute cooldown but can reactivate after that. The loot structure is permanent — Vaults can only be opened once per player, ever. If you want more vault loot, find a second Trial Chamber.

Can I run a Trial Chamber multiple times?

Trial Spawners reactivate after 30 minutes so you can farm XP from mobs. But Vaults remember which players have already opened them. You and every friend can each open each vault once — after that, it is done for your account.

Do Trial Chambers work on Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Trial Chambers generate on both Java and Bedrock Edition from version 1.21 onwards. The mechanics and loot are consistent across both editions.

What is the easiest way to start Ominous Trials without accidentally triggering them?

Do not drink the Ominous Bottle until you are fully geared and ready inside the chamber entrance. The Bad Omen effect only converts Trial Spawners when you walk near them while affected. You can explore the structure safely first, set up a shelter, and then drink the bottle when you are ready for the hard mode.

Can you get Mending books from Trial Chamber Vaults?

Regular Mending books are not in the exclusive Trial Chamber loot pool but some standard enchanted books can appear. For reliable Mending books, a villager trading hall with a Librarian is still the best source.

Do Trial Chambers exist in old worlds?

Only in unexplored chunks generated after version 1.21. If your world was created before 1.21 and you have explored extensively, you need to travel far from your existing explored area to find new chunks where Trial Chambers can generate. Using a fresh seed for a new world guarantees Trial Chambers in accessible locations.

Are Trial Chambers good for multiplayer?

Absolutely. The Trial Spawner system is specifically designed for groups — more players means more mobs, but also more Trial Keys from each spawner. Every player gets their own loot from Vaults. Running Trial Chambers with friends on a Minecraft Realm is one of the best mid-game multiplayer experiences in the game.

Trial Chambers are the most rewarding mid-game structure Minecraft has ever added. The combat is genuinely challenging, the loot system is inventive, and the Mace and exclusive enchantments they unlock change how the late game plays. Find your Cartographer, level them up, buy the map, and go claim your Mace.
