TL;DR
- Cotton is found as wild plants on the starting island — pick them to get 1x Cotton and 1x Cotton Seed each.
- There are around four Cotton plants on the starting island total. Two are easy to reach, two require Build Hammer access to elevated areas.
- Cotton glows at night — do a sweep after dark to find plants you missed during the day.
- Plant every Cotton Seed on tilled soil using a Hoe, water them, and harvest when ready to grow your supply.
- Each harvest returns 1x Cotton and 1x Cotton Seed, so replant immediately after every harvest to keep the cycle going.
- Cotton grows in just 10 minutes — it is the fastest crop in the game.
- You need Cotton to make Cloth, which is used for the Research Table, Map, Bed, Airship Dock, and Airship. You also need 12x Cotton for an essential Traderbot trade.
- More Cotton plants can be found on islands to the northwest and beyond once you have an Airship.
How to get more cotton in Solarpunk is a question most players run into very early. Cotton is the main bottleneck of the entire early game. You need it to make Cloth, and Cloth is needed for almost every major crafting and research step — the Research Table, the Map, the Bed, the Airship Dock, and the Airship itself. On top of that, Traderbot wants 12x Cotton as part of the early trade chain. The problem is that the starting island does not have much of it growing in the open, and it is easy to miss some of it entirely. This guide shows you every source of Cotton and how to grow a steady farm so you never get stuck waiting for it.
Why Cotton Is the Biggest Early-Game Bottleneck
Most new players underestimate how much Cloth they will need. Cloth is made from Cotton at the Crafting Table, and the demand for it keeps rising throughout early and mid-game progression.
Here is everything that requires Cotton or Cloth in the early game:
- Research Table — Requires 1x Cloth to build.
- Bed — Requires 1x Cloth as part of the research and build cost.
- Map — Requires 2x Cloth to craft after researching it at Tier 2.
- Airship Dock research — Requires 5x Cloth as part of the research unlock.
- Airship Dock construction — Requires 3x Cloth to build.
- Airship construction — Requires 3x Cloth to build at the dock.
- Traderbot trade — Requires 12x Cotton (not Cloth) as a straight trade item.
That adds up fast. If you pick Cotton without replanting the seeds, you will hit a wall before you even get the Airship off the ground. Setting up a Cotton farm from your very first seed is the right move. To keep your early progression smooth alongside your cotton supply, also make sure your water system is sorted — read our guide on how to drink water in Solarpunk if you have not set up your Rain Collector yet.

Where to Find Wild Cotton on the Starting Island
The starting island has around four Cotton plants in total. They appear as whitish, fluffy-looking plants and stand out from the grass when you know what to look for.
Easy-Access Cotton Plants
Two or three of the Cotton plants are reachable on foot without any special tools. Walk around the starting island and look for the white plant nodes. Pick them up — each one gives you 1x Cotton and 1x Cotton Seed.
Elevated Cotton Plants
One or two more Cotton plants sit on higher ground that is not reachable by jumping alone. You need a Build Hammer to construct a staircase or ramp up to those spots. The Build Hammer is a Tier 1 research item. Once you have it, build your own path up and collect the remaining Cotton plants. Do not skip these — every Cotton Seed matters in the early game.
Find Cotton Faster at Night
Cotton plants glow in the dark. If you are struggling to spot them during the day, wait until nightfall and do a sweep of the island. The glow makes them very easy to identify against the darker surroundings. This is especially useful if you suspect there are plants you have walked past without noticing.

How to Grow Cotton in Solarpunk
Wild Cotton plants are limited and do not respawn. The only way to get a steady, growing supply of Cotton is to farm it yourself. Every Cotton plant you pick gives you a Cotton Seed, and that seed is what you plant to grow more.
Step 1: Craft a Hoe
To plant crops you need tilled soil, and tilling soil requires a Hoe. The Hoe is one of the basic tools available from the Quick Craft menu at the start of the game — press F and craft it from Sticks and Stones. No Research Table needed.
Step 2: Till the Soil
Equip the Hoe and use it on a patch of ground. You will see a plot outline appear as you hover. When the outline turns blue, that spot is valid farmland. Dig it to create a planting patch. Make several patches in a row so you can plant multiple seeds at once.
Step 3: Plant Your Cotton Seeds
Open your inventory and select the Cotton Seed. Plant it in a tilled soil patch. Repeat for each seed you have.
Step 4: Water the Seeds
Craft a Watering Can from the Quick Craft menu and fill it from your Rain Collector or any nearby water source. Water each Cotton plot. A watered plot turns a darker shade of brown — that tells you it has been watered and is actively growing.
Cotton is the fastest-growing crop in the game at just 10 minutes. Water it and it will be ready to harvest very quickly. You do not need to water it again between planting and harvest if it was watered right after planting.
Step 5: Harvest and Replant Immediately
When the Cotton bush is fully grown, pick it. You get 1x Cotton and 1x Cotton Seed per harvest. Plant that seed again right away. Never let a Cotton Seed sit unused in your inventory. Every harvest should immediately become the next planting cycle.
Over time this creates a reliable loop. The more plots you have running in parallel, the more Cotton comes in per cycle. Even five or six plots running continuously makes a noticeable difference.
How to Make Cloth from Cotton
Once you have Cotton, turn it into Cloth at the Crafting Table. Press E on the Crafting Table and go to the Resources Tab. Select Cloth and craft it from your Cotton. One Cotton makes one Cloth — the conversion is one-to-one, so every piece of Cotton you grow matters.

How to Automate Cotton Farming Later
In the early game, watering is all done manually with a Watering Can. But as you progress through Traderbot trades, automation becomes available.
The Sprinkler Set is one of the first Traderbot blueprint unlocks. Trade 4x Watermelon to Traderbot to get it. Once you have the Sprinkler, you can set it up over your Cotton farm and it will water crops automatically without you needing to do it manually. This frees up a lot of time and keeps your Cotton cycling even when you are off exploring other islands.
Where to Get More Cotton Seeds from Other Islands
Once your Airship is built and flying, the Cotton supply problem gets easier. Other islands have wild Cotton plants growing on them, which means more seeds to bring home and expand your farm.
- Northwest island — The island to the northwest of your starting island has several more Cotton plants. It is one of the first islands you should visit for Cotton.
- Second ring islands — After your first Airship range upgrade (via the 32x Copper Traderbot trade), the second ring of islands opens up. Several of these have Cotton plants too. Collect every seed you find before flying home.
The rule is simple: whenever you land on a new island, grab every Cotton plant in sight. Even if you do not need the Cotton immediately, the seeds expand your farm capacity permanently.
Cotton Tips That Save a Lot of Time
- Replant every seed, every harvest. Never sit on Cotton Seeds. The moment you harvest, plant the seed again. A stalled seed is a stalled supply.
- Prioritise Cotton over decorating early. It is tempting to build things early on, but spending Cotton on optional crafting before the Airship is ready will slow you down significantly.
- Do not spend Cotton before checking what Traderbot needs. You need 12x Cotton for an essential Traderbot trade in the early chain. Keep a reserve of at least that much before spending Cotton freely.
- Search at night. Cotton plants glow. If your starting island sweep felt incomplete, go again after dark and check every corner.
- Use the Build Hammer to reach high spots. Two Cotton plants on the starting island are only reachable from elevated terrain. Build stairs to get them.
- Build a dedicated Cotton farm section. Keeping Cotton in its own farm area, separate from food crops, makes it easier to track your supply and replant without mixing things up.
- Cotton grows in 10 minutes. It is the fastest crop in the game. Even a short break from playing is enough for a full growth cycle to complete.
How Much Cotton Do You Actually Need
To give you a clear picture, here is the total raw Cotton demand you will face across early game progression:
- Research Table build — 1x Cloth (1x Cotton)
- Bed build — 1x Cloth (1x Cotton)
- Map craft — 2x Cloth (2x Cotton)
- Airship Dock research — 5x Cloth (5x Cotton)
- Airship Dock construction — 3x Cloth (3x Cotton)
- Airship construction — 3x Cloth (3x Cotton)
- Traderbot cotton trade — 12x Cotton (raw, not Cloth)
That is a minimum of roughly 27 Cotton just to hit the key early-game milestones, not counting anything optional. Starting with only two or three wild plants and not farming immediately means a very long wait. Starting your farm on day one of the game changes the situation completely.
Final Thoughts
Cotton is the hidden backbone of early progression in Solarpunk. It feeds into Cloth, and Cloth feeds into nearly everything that matters in the first few hours of the game. Find every wild Cotton plant on your starting island — including the elevated ones that need a Build Hammer to reach — collect the seeds, build a small farm immediately, and replant after every harvest without exception. Cotton grows in just 10 minutes, so even a handful of plots running continuously will keep your supply healthy. Expand to other islands when your Airship is ready, and grab every Cotton plant you see. Get this sorted early and the rest of your progression will flow naturally.
