TL;DR
- Wheat does not grow on your starting island. You cannot find it no matter how long you search there.
- You need a Level 2 Airship to reach the islands where Wheat grows.
- Get the Level 2 Airship upgrade by completing the Traderbot trade chain ending with the 32x Copper trade, then confirm the upgrade at your Airship Dock.
- Fly east and west from your starting island. There are around 4x Wheat nodes on the eastern island and 3x on the western islands — 7 total to start.
- Each Wheat plant gives 1x Wheat and 1x Wheat Seed. Bring every seed home and start farming immediately.
- Plant Wheat Seeds on tilled soil, water them, and harvest every cycle. Replant every seed without exception.
- Save your early Wheat carefully. You need 1x Wheat to unlock Research Table Tier 5, 5x Wheat to research Animal Basics, 10x Wheat for a Traderbot trade, and 30x Wheat to make the 10x Bread needed for another Traderbot trade.
- Do not feed chickens heavily until all Wheat gates are covered. Spending Wheat on Animal Feed too early is one of the most common mid-game mistakes.
How to get wheat in Solarpunk is one of the most important questions you will face in the mid-game. Wheat looks like a simple crop, but it quietly sits behind some of the most critical progression gates in the entire game. You need it to unlock Research Table Tier 5, research animals, complete Traderbot trades, make Bread, and feed your chickens well enough to get Eggs. The problem is that Wheat is not available until you have upgraded your Airship and reached a new set of islands. This guide covers exactly how to get there, where to find Wheat, and how to manage your supply so you do not get stuck.

Why Wheat Is a Bigger Deal Than It Looks
Most players pick up their first Wheat and assume it is just a food ingredient. It is not. Wheat is a progression gate material. If you spend it carelessly at the start, you will block yourself from unlocking Research Tier 5, animals, and the Bread trade chain all at once.
Here is the full list of what Wheat is needed for in the mid-game:
- Research Table Tier 5 unlock — 1x Wheat to advance the tier.
- Animal Basics research — 5x Wheat to unlock animal structures and taming.
- Traderbot trade — 10x Wheat as a direct trade item.
- Bread (Traderbot trade) — 10x Bread for a Traderbot trade. Each Bread requires 1x Dough, and each Dough costs 3x Wheat. That means 30x Wheat total just for this trade.
- Animal Feed — Ongoing Wheat consumption to keep chickens fed once your farm is running.
That is a minimum of around 46 Wheat before you can freely use it for Animal Feed. Your farm needs to be running and growing before any of that can feel comfortable.
Step 1: Build Your Airship
Before Wheat is even on the table, you need an Airship. Wheat is only found on islands outside your starting travel range. There is no way around this. If you have not built an Airship yet, that is the first step. You need to reach Research Table Tier 3, unlock the Airship Dock, and craft the Airship using the Crashed Airship Component found on your starting island.
Step 2: Upgrade Your Airship to Level 2
Even with an Airship, the starting travel range is too small to reach the Wheat islands. You need a Level 2 Airship, which expands the white travel circle on your map enough to reach the east and west islands.
To get the Level 2 upgrade, you need to work through the Traderbot trade chain in order. The Traderbot is the floating structure north of your starting island. The trades leading to the Level 2 upgrade go in this sequence:
- 4x Watermelon
- 12x Cotton
- 20x Beeswax
- 10x Watermelon
- 32x Copper
The 32x Copper trade is the one that gives you the Level 2 Airship upgrade component. Mine Copper from a Copper island within your current range and bring back enough to complete the trade.
Important: Completing the Traderbot trade only gives you the upgrade item. The travel range does not expand automatically. You need to fly home, walk up to your Airship Dock, and press the Upgrade button at the dock. Only after doing that will the white circle on your map grow and the Wheat islands become reachable. Many players miss this step and wonder why nothing has changed.

Where to Find Wheat in Solarpunk

With your Level 2 Airship confirmed at the dock, open your map. The white travel circle will now cover a wider ring of islands. Wheat is found on islands to the east and west of your starting island in this expanded second ring.
- Eastern island — Around 4x Wheat nodes.
- Western islands — Around 3x Wheat nodes across a cluster of smaller islands.

That is roughly 7 Wheat plants in total across both directions. Each plant gives you 1x Wheat and 1x Wheat Seed when picked. Collect every single one before flying home. Check paths, ledges, and corners of each island before leaving — it is easy to miss a node tucked away on an edge.
While you are on these islands, also collect Quartz. Quartz smelts into Silicon in the Furnace, and Silicon is the gate material for Traderbot Blueprint Tier 2. Grabbing both Wheat and Quartz on the same flight saves you a return trip.

How to Grow Wheat on Your Home Island
Seven wild Wheat plants are not enough for everything the game asks of you. You need a farm. Every Wheat you pick in the wild gives you a Wheat Seed to plant, and that seed is how you expand your supply over time.
Step 1: Till the Soil with a Hoe
Equip your Hoe and use it on clear ground. When the plot outline turns blue, the spot is valid for farming. Till several patches in a row to plant multiple seeds at once.
Step 2: Plant Your Wheat Seeds
Select a Wheat Seed from your inventory and plant it in a tilled patch. Repeat for each seed you brought home. Do not hold any back — plant every seed you have.
Step 3: Water Every Plot
Fill your Watering Can from your Rain Collector and water each Wheat plot. A watered plot turns dark brown. Wheat takes around 15 minutes to grow from seed to harvest. Keep plots watered every cycle for a continuous supply.
Step 4: Harvest and Replant Immediately
Each harvest gives you 1x Wheat and 1x Wheat Seed. Plant that seed again right away without delay. Never let a Wheat Seed sit in your inventory unused. Every cycle you skip is a gap in your supply that will catch up with you later.
Automate Watering When You Can
Once you unlock the Sprinkler through Traderbot (trade 4x Watermelon to get the Sprinkler Set blueprint), set it up over your Wheat farm. The Sprinkler waters crops automatically so you do not have to check in manually every 15 minutes. This makes a big difference once your farm is larger.
How to Make Bread from Wheat
One of the most important Wheat uses is making Bread for the Traderbot trade. The Traderbot wants 10x Bread, and this is not cheap to produce.
Here is how to make Bread step by step:
- Go to your Crafting Table and craft Dough from Wheat. Each Dough costs 3x Wheat.
- Place the Dough in your Furnace with Wood as fuel.
- The Furnace bakes the Dough into 1x Bread.
- Repeat until you have 10x Bread for the trade.
Ten Bread requires ten Dough, which requires 30x Wheat in total. This is a significant investment. Do not start making Bread until your Wheat farm has a comfortable surplus built up.
How to Use Wheat for Animal Feed
Once you have unlocked Animal Basics and tamed your first chickens, you will need Animal Feed to keep them fed. Animal Feed is made from Wheat at the Crafting Table.
Place Animal Feed in the Feeding Trough inside your chicken coop area. Chickens need steady access to feed and water to produce Eggs consistently.
The key thing to know here: do not start feeding chickens seriously until the Wheat progression gates are already cleared. This means the 1x Wheat Tier 5 unlock, the 5x Wheat Animal Basics research, the 10x Wheat Traderbot trade, and the 30x Wheat Bread trade should all be done before you start routing Wheat into Animal Feed regularly. Players who miss this and start feeding chickens straight away burn through their Wheat supply and find themselves stuck on multiple gates at the same time.
How to Attract and Tame Chickens with Wheat
Wheat is also the tool for bringing chickens to your base. Hold Wheat in your hand while near a chicken and it will start following you. Keep it equipped and walk slowly back to your base. If the chicken stops following, check that Wheat is still selected and that there are no obstacles blocking the path.
Before you lead any chicken home, make sure you have the following ready:
- At least one Feeding Trough placed and accessible.
- At least one Water Trough filled.
- At least one Chicken Coop with enough clear space around it.
Spacing matters. If animal structures are packed too tightly together, chickens cannot use them properly and hunger will never reach the required level for Egg production.
How Much Wheat You Need Before Using It Freely
To give you a clear target before spending Wheat on anything optional, here is the minimum reserve you should have secured first:
- 1x Wheat — Research Table Tier 5 unlock
- 5x Wheat — Animal Basics research
- 10x Wheat — Traderbot trade
- 30x Wheat — 10x Bread (for Traderbot Bread trade)
That is 46x Wheat minimum for gates alone. Only after those are covered should you start sending Wheat into Animal Feed without worrying about running short. With a working farm of 10 or more plots running in cycles, you will reach this buffer comfortably without too much waiting.
Wheat Tips That Save You From Common Mistakes
- Confirm the Level 2 upgrade at your dock. The Traderbot trade alone does not expand your range. You must walk to your dock and press Upgrade after trading the 32x Copper.
- Grab Quartz on the same flights as Wheat. Both resources are on the same second-ring islands. Pick up Quartz every time you visit to progress your Traderbot Blueprint tiers in parallel.
- Replant every Wheat Seed immediately after harvest. A seed sitting in storage is progress you are delaying for no reason.
- Do not cook your first Wheat. Bread requires Dough, but do not eat the Bread. Save it all for the Traderbot trade.
- Cover the 46 Wheat gate minimum before feeding chickens seriously. This single rule prevents the most common mid-game resource crisis in Solarpunk.
- Save the first 6 Eggs for the next Airship upgrade. Once chickens start laying, the instinct is to cook Eggs. Resist it. The Level 3 Airship upgrade requires 6x Eggs traded to Traderbot.
Final Thoughts
Wheat in Solarpunk is never just food. From the moment you pick your first stalk, it is a progression resource that controls Research Tier 5, Animal Basics, Traderbot trades, Bread production, and your chicken egg chain. Get your Airship to Level 2 by completing the Traderbot trade chain through the 32x Copper deal, confirm the upgrade at your dock, fly east and west to the second ring, and collect every Wheat node and seed you can find. Start your farm immediately, replant every harvest, and hold back at least 46 Wheat before spending any on Animal Feed. If your Cotton supply is not solid yet before you start working toward the Airship upgrade, make sure to sort that out first — our guide on how to get more cotton in Solarpunk covers everything you need to know to keep Cloth flowing through the early game.
