TL;DR
- You need to unlock Research Table Tier 5 first, then research the Animal Basics Pack using 5x Wheat.
- This unlocks the Chicken Coop, Feeding Trough, Water Trough, and Animal Feed recipes.
- Build the Chicken Coop first, then place the Feeding Trough and Water Trough close by — but not directly beside the coop.
- Fill the Feeding Trough with 4x Animal Feed and the Water Trough using half a Watering Can.
- To lure a chicken, equip Wheat in your hand and walk slowly back to your base. The chicken will follow you.
- When the chicken reaches the Chicken Coop, it claims it as home — you will see its name appear above the coop.
- Interact with the chicken to check its Hunger, Thirst, and Shelter meters. All three need to reach 10/10 for Eggs to appear.
- Eggs appear in the small basket next to the Chicken Coop. The basket holds up to 4 Eggs at a time.
- Save your first 6 Eggs for the Traderbot airship upgrade. Do not cook them.
How to lure chickens and get eggs in Solarpunk is one of the most satisfying mid-game goals, but it has several steps that trip players up. You cannot pick up a chicken and carry it home. You cannot get eggs without the right infrastructure in place first. And if you spend your Wheat carelessly before setting this system up, the whole thing stalls out. This guide walks through every step — from unlocking Animal Basics to keeping your chicken happy enough to lay Eggs consistently.
What You Need Before You Can Keep Chickens
Chickens are a mid-game system in Solarpunk. Do not expect to get Eggs on your first day. There are a few hard requirements before any of this is possible.
- Level 2 Airship — Wheat is not found on the starting island. You need the first Airship range upgrade to reach the islands where Wheat grows.
- Enough Wheat — You need at least 46x Wheat before you should start using it for Animal Feed. That covers the Tier 5 Research unlock (1x Wheat), Animal Basics research (5x Wheat), the 10x Wheat Traderbot trade, and the 30x Wheat needed to make 10x Bread for another Traderbot trade.
- Research Table Tier 5 — Costs 1x Wheat to unlock this tier.
- Animal Basics Pack — Researched at the Tier 5 Research Table for 5x Wheat. This unlocks all the animal structure recipes.
If your Wheat supply is not solid yet, read our full guide on how to get wheat in Solarpunk before attempting the chicken setup. Rushing into chickens before your Wheat farm is running is one of the most common ways to block your own mid-game progression.

Step 1: Research the Animal Basics Pack
Head to your Research Table with Tier 5 unlocked. Find the Animal Basics Pack in the research list and spend 5x Wheat to unlock it.
This unlocks the following recipes at your Crafting Table:
- Chicken Coop — The shelter that a chicken will claim as home.
- Feeding Trough — Holds Animal Feed for the chicken to eat from.
- Water Trough — Holds water for the chicken to drink from.
- Animal Feed — Made from Wheat. Each Animal Feed requires 2x Wheat to craft.
- Feed Bag — Used to fill the Feeding Trough.

Step 2: Build Your Chicken Farm Setup
Before you try to bring any chicken home, the entire infrastructure must be built and filled first. A chicken that arrives before the trough is ready will not settle properly.
Build the Chicken Coop
Place the Chicken Coop in an open field area near your base. Give it enough clear space on all sides. The coop is what the chicken will claim as its home — once a chicken is linked to a coop, its name appears above it and the bird will not wander away.
Build the Feeding Trough and Water Trough
Place the Feeding Trough and Water Trough close to the Chicken Coop. The game will not allow you to place them directly beside the coop, so use the minimum valid distance and get them as close as possible.
Spacing is critical. If structures are packed too tightly together, chickens cannot access them properly. When that happens, the Hunger meter never reaches 10/10 even if feed is available. Leave enough open space around each structure for the chicken to physically reach and interact with it.
Fill Both Troughs
Fill the Water Trough using your Watering Can — it takes about half a Watering Can to fill it completely. The Water Trough also refills automatically when it rains, so you do not need to top it up constantly.
Fill the Feeding Trough with 4x Animal Feed to reach its maximum capacity. Craft Animal Feed at the Crafting Table using 2x Wheat per piece.
Step 3: How to Lure a Chicken in Solarpunk
You cannot carry a chicken. Instead, you attract it with food and walk it home. Here is exactly how to do it.
Put Wheat on your hotbar and equip it. Walk up to a chicken. The moment it sees the Wheat in your hand, it will start following you.
Walk slowly back toward your base. Do not run. If you move too far ahead of the chicken, it will stop following. Keep the chicken in range the whole time by checking behind you as you walk. If you switch away from Wheat in your hotbar or put the item away, the chicken will stop following immediately.
There is a chicken on the starting island roaming near the hill by the lake — this is the easiest one to access early. Other chickens can be found on outer islands once your Airship range expands.
Step 4: Get the Chicken to Claim Its Coop
Lead the chicken to the area where your Chicken Coop is placed. When the chicken gets close enough to the coop, it will automatically claim it as its home. You will see the chicken’s name appear above the Coop — this is your confirmation that the link has been made.
Once claimed, the chicken will not wander away or leave the area, even without a fence around it. Registered chickens stay near their coop permanently. You do not need to build enclosures to pen them in.
Step 5: Keep the Chicken Happy to Get Eggs
Chickens have three needs that must all reach 10/10 before they will produce Eggs:
- Shelter — Met by having a claimed Chicken Coop. This one handles itself once the chicken links to the coop.
- Hunger — Met by keeping the Feeding Trough full of Animal Feed.
- Thirst — Met by keeping the Water Trough filled with water.
Interact with the chicken at any time to check its current need meters. When all three are climbing steadily, the system is working. When all three reach green at 10/10, the Overall bar turns green and the chicken starts laying Eggs.
Eggs appear in the small basket sitting next to the Chicken Coop. The basket holds up to 4 Eggs at a time. Check it frequently and collect Eggs before it fills up, otherwise production pauses until there is room.
Why Your Chicken Is Not Laying Eggs
If your chicken’s Hunger meter refuses to reach 10/10 even with a full Feeding Trough, the most common causes are:
- Structure spacing is too tight. The chicken cannot physically reach the trough if other buildings are in the way. Move things apart and give each structure clear access space.
- The Feeding Trough is not full enough. Make sure all 4x Animal Feed slots are filled, not just one or two.
- You set up chickens before your Wheat gates were cleared. If your Wheat farm is too small to sustain consistent Animal Feed production, the trough empties faster than it refills. Cover the 10x Wheat Traderbot trade and 10x Bread trade first, then return to chickens with a larger farm behind you.
- The chicken has not fully claimed the coop yet. Check that the chicken’s name is visible above the Coop. If it is not there yet, wait a little longer or make sure the coop is close enough to where the chicken settled.
How to Transport Chickens from Other Islands

The lure-and-walk method works well on the starting island. But if you want to bring chickens home from distant islands, you need the Animal Transport system.
Animal Transport is unlocked through the Energy Workbench at Tier 2, which requires Silicon. Silicon is made by smelting Quartz in a Furnace. Once you have the Animal Transport research done, it unlocks two items:

- Animal Receiving Station — Place this at your home base where you want the animal to arrive.
- Animal Transportation — A consumable item you use on an animal on a distant island. It sends the animal directly to your Receiving Station back home.

Name your Receiving Station if you plan to use multiple ones. The Animal Transportation item is single-use and disappears after use, so carry several when visiting new islands.
What to Do with Your Eggs
Once your chicken starts producing Eggs, the most important rule is this: save your first 6 Eggs for the Traderbot airship upgrade.
The next Airship range upgrade after the 32x Copper trade requires 6x Eggs traded to Traderbot. This expands your travel circle again and opens up outer islands with Carrots, Sunflowers, Cobalt, and Pigs. Cooking your first Eggs before completing this trade is one of the most common mistakes in the Solarpunk mid-game. Hold them back until the Traderbot trade is done.
After the 6 Egg trade is complete, Eggs are free to use in cooking. Cooked Eggs restore both Hunger and a little Thirst, making them a solid food source for the later game.
Automating Your Chicken Farm
Manual feeding and watering works fine for one or two chickens. But as your farm grows, automation saves a lot of time.
- Automatic Feeder — Replaces the manual Feeding Trough and runs on 50 power. Keeps feed topped up without any input from you.
- Powered Water Trough — Runs on 50 power and keeps the water supply stable automatically.
- Chicken Incubator — Works with Hatchable Eggs and hatches them in just 1 minute. Requires 200 power. Useful once your energy grid is solid.
Both the Automatic Feeder and Powered Water Trough require a working energy network. Make sure your Solar Panels or Wind Turbines can handle the additional draw before switching to automated animal care.
Other Animals You Can Lure in Solarpunk
Chickens are not the only animals in the game. Here is how luring works for the other two:
- Pig — Lured with Carrots. Carrots are found on outer islands after your second Airship range upgrade.
- Sheep — Lured with Corn. Each animal type uses the same lure-and-walk method but requires its own matching shelter.
All three animal types grow up in around 10 minutes, and each produces its own unique resource once settled and cared for properly.
Final Thoughts
Getting chickens and Eggs in Solarpunk is a multi-step process that rewards patience and good planning. Research the Animal Basics Pack with 5x Wheat, build your coop and troughs before trying to lure anything, equip Wheat in your hotbar and walk slowly to bring a chicken home, and keep all three need meters climbing toward 10/10. Once the system is running, Eggs appear consistently in the basket beside the coop. Just remember — save those first 6 Eggs for the Traderbot upgrade. Cooking them too early is one of the easiest ways to delay your next Airship range expansion.
