How to Unlock Azula in Avatar Legends

Azula does not need to be unlocked. She is part of the base roster in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game and is available the moment you start the game. The only locked characters at launch are Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra.

Who Is Azula in Avatar Legends?

Azula is the Fire Nation princess, younger sister of Zuko, and daughter of Fire Lord Ozai. She is one of the most skilled and feared firebenders in the Avatar universe – capable of producing rare blue flames and generating lightning. Her prodigious talent, ruthlessness, and calculating mind made her a genuine threat to Team Avatar throughout the series. Her later descent into instability as her perfectionism cracked under pressure is one of the most memorable arcs in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The developers have captured both sides of Azula – the composed, precise tactician and the unhinged, reckless force of destruction – in two completely distinct fighting modes. She is the most faithful character adaptation in the roster and also the most mechanically complex. She is designed for experienced players who can manage positioning, trap timing, mode switching, and resource use all at once.

Azula’s Two Modes – The Core of Her Design

Focused Mode – Trap Zoner

Azula starts every match in Focused Mode. This is the calm, calculated Azula of the early series – the poised future ruler of the Fire Nation. In Focused Mode, she is a trap-based mixup zoning character with high-execution combos and strong space control.

Her specials in this mode leave behind ember patches on the ground. When those embers are hit by certain moves or ignited by Azula’s blue flames, they launch the opponent with an Element Surge and leave behind a flame carpet that continues to deal damage. She also gains access to a grounded fireball in this mode, giving her stronger full-screen space control. Setting traps and throwing opponents into them triggers a Critical Hit for bonus Energy.

Focused Mode rewards patience, setup, and reading the opponent’s movement. It is a thinking person’s playstyle. Every move has a purpose beyond the immediate hit – it is either setting a trap, threatening an ignition, or controlling space.

Firelord Mode – Pure Rushdown

If Azula loses a round, she transitions into Firelord Mode (also called Firelord’s Madness) for the rest of the match. This reflects her breakdown in the series – her rigid perfectionism cracking under the weight of loss. In this mode, she abandons restraint and fully embraces chaos.

Traps are replaced with raw destructive power. Her moveset shifts toward relentless offense with new, unique specials. Her standard fireball evolves into a towering wall of flame that slowly advances across the battlefield, forcing the opponent to face it head-on. Her movement becomes more erratic and aggressive. She gains multiple ways to stick to the opponent and keep pressure going.

Firelord Mode is faster, harder hitting, and far more aggressive than Focused Mode. The tradeoff is the loss of the precise trap game. What you get instead is one of the most terrifying rushdown modes in the game.

Azula’s Ember Trap System

The ember trap system is the heart of Focused Mode Azula. Here is how it works:

• Several of Azula’s specials in Focused Mode leave ember patches on the ground as they land.
• Ember patches slowly grow in size over time until they cover more of the stage.
• When an ember patch is hit by certain moves or blue fire projectiles, it ignites, triggering an Element Surge that launches the opponent and leaves a flame carpet.
• Throwing an opponent while they are standing on an ember patch also ignites it, triggering a Critical Hit for 1 Energy.
• Flame carpets continue dealing damage to opponents who walk through them.

Managing where your ember patches land, keeping the opponent away from safe positions, and timing the ignition is the core puzzle of Focused Azula. With the Lo and Li support, ember patch and flame carpet duration is doubled, giving you much more time to work with each trap.

Azula’s Key Moves

Ensnaring Embers

Azula creates an ember patch that slowly grows in size until it covers a significant area of ground. This is her main trap-laying tool in Focused Mode. Based on when she set an abandoned building on fire in the original series. Use it to cut off the opponent’s movement options and force them into positions you control.

Phoenix’s Descent

Based on the iconic firebending dive Azula performs in the opening sequence of Avatar: The Last Airbender. A fast aerial attack that gives her exceptional air-to-ground pressure. Azula can cancel her air normals into Flow movement on contact with the opponent, making her aerial offense extremely difficult to punish.

Rolling Blaze

A rolling fireball that travels across the stage. In Focused Mode this works as a controlled projectile. In Firelord Mode, this evolves into the advancing wall of flame that slowly pushes across the entire screen, forcing the opponent to engage rather than retreat.

Scorching Talon

A precision move that can be charged for enhanced properties. Releasing it at the perfect timing – the Perfect Release – earns 1 Chakra stock and causes a higher-than-normal ground bounce on the opponent. This is a once-per-round reward and one of Azula’s most impactful Critical Hit conditions. Azula can release Scorching Talon at perfect timing earlier than normal when Lo and Li are equipped.

Imperial Lightning (Chakra Art – Unblockable)

Azula’s Chakra Art in Focused Mode fires a horizontal lightning projectile. This move is unblockable and cannot be dodged with Flow – with two exceptions. When fighting Aang, he can redirect the lightning harmlessly into the sky. When fighting Zuko, he can redirect it straight back at Azula, reflecting his ability to redirect lightning from the series. Every other character simply cannot avoid it.

Firelord’s Descent (Chakra Art – Firelord Mode)

Azula’s Chakra Art in Firelord Mode. A devastating super that embodies her unhinged state. She says lines referencing her desire to rule and her rivalry with Zuko when using it.

Azula’s Critical Hit Conditions

• Perfect Ignition: Set an ember patch trap, then throw the opponent while they are standing on it. Ignites the patch for an Element Surge launch and awards 1 Energy point. The fundamental reward loop for Focused Mode Azula.
• Perfect Release: Hit the opponent with a perfectly timed Scorching Talon release. Earns 1 Chakra stock and a higher ground bounce. Once per round.

Azula’s Health – She Is Squishy

Azula has significantly less health than most characters on the roster. She starts at a lower base health pool than the standard 1000. This is her main drawback and the reason she requires careful play even at high levels.

• With Joo Dee: She begins with only 850 health – making her the squishiest character in the game.
• With Lo and Li: She gains 50 extra health.
• With Ursa: She gains 100 extra health – bringing her to the same health as Aang, the second squishiest character.

Even at her tankiest with Ursa, Azula is still tied for the lowest health on the roster. This means a single mistake against high-damage characters can be very costly.

Best Support Characters for Azula

Lo and Li – Longer Traps

Lo and Li double the duration of Azula’s ember patches, flame carpets, and Ambition’s Spark. They also give her extra health and reduce the Flow cost of her Flow movement cancels by 25%. This is the best all-round support for Focused Mode players. Longer traps mean more time to land the ignition, more stage coverage, and more opportunities for the Perfect Ignition Critical Hit. The health bonus also helps offset Azula’s biggest weakness. Best for: players who want the full Focused Mode trap experience with longer-lasting setups.

Joo Dee – Stay in Focused Mode

Joo Dee prevents Azula from ever entering Firelord Mode. Even if she loses a round, she stays in Focused Mode for the entire match. She also gives a very large discount on Flow movement cancel costs – 50% cheaper than base. The tradeoff is the lowest health in the game (850). Best for: players who are fully committed to the Focused Mode trap playstyle and do not want the mode switch disrupting their game plan.

Ursa – Start in Firelord Mode

Ursa starts Azula directly in Firelord’s Madness from the very beginning of the match. She also gives the most extra health of the three supports. Due to starting in Firelord’s Madness, Azula also begins the match with 1 Energy point already loaded. This completely skips the Focused Mode phase and lets you play aggressive Firelord Azula from round one. Best for: players who prefer the rushdown Firelord style and want to skip trap setup entirely.

Is Azula Good in Avatar Legends?

Azula is the best character in the game at launch. Multiple tier lists place her in her own tier above S-tier. One analysis put it simply: there is nobody better than Firelord Azula right now, and nobody even comes close.

She can do everything. She zones with traps, she rushes down in Firelord Mode, she has great aerial mobility, strong combos, corner carry, unblockable lightning, and a flame carpet that punishes any opponent who cannot navigate around it. She has essentially no holes in her kit at launch.

The only things holding her back are her low health pool and her complexity. She is not a character you can pick up and immediately dominate with. Focused Mode requires genuine trap management skill. Firelord Mode requires knowing when to abandon precision for aggression. But players who invest the time to learn her are rewarded with the most powerful character in the game.

Tips to Get Better With Azula

• Learn to lay ember patches in safe positions first. The trap game only works if your opponent cannot simply walk around or destroy your embers. Practice placing them in positions that cut off movement options and force the opponent to engage.
• Do not try to force the ignition immediately. Patience is Focused Mode Azula’s greatest weapon. Let the ember patch grow. Let the opponent feel the pressure of its presence. Ignite it when they make a mistake trying to avoid it.
• Throw opponents onto ember patches every time you can. The Perfect Ignition Critical Hit is 1 free Energy point. In Focused Mode, always be aware of where your patches are and look for throw opportunities when the opponent is standing on one.
• Time the Scorching Talon Perfect Release every round. It is once per round and earns a Chakra stock plus a better bounce. Practice the timing in Training Mode until it is consistent.
• Against Aang and Zuko, do not use Imperial Lightning carelessly. Both characters can redirect it. Against everyone else, it is a free unblockable hit. Know your matchup before committing to it.
• In Firelord Mode, do not revert to passive play. The whole point of the mode switch is aggression. Use the advancing flame wall to cut off the stage and apply pressure constantly. Firelord Azula wins by keeping opponents cornered.

How Azula Compares to Other Characters

Azula is in a league of her own at launch. Korra is S-tier and a dominant rushdown character. Toph is S-tier with her armor and crushing damage. But Azula is placed above both. She can match Toph’s damage output in Firelord Mode while also having Focused Mode’s trap game as a completely different toolkit in round one. No other character in the roster has that range of options.
