- You can replay the mission from the Batcomputer if you miss anything.
New Beginnings is the first mission of Chapter 1 in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight. It picks up after Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham, teams up with Jim Gordon, and chases corrupt Detective Flass through the docks. The mission is fast-paced and constantly pushes you forward, which makes it easy to blow past all five Surfboard collectibles without noticing them.
This guide covers every Surfboard location in order, plus exactly where to find the Nautical Red Brick, so you can clear the full mission collectible set in a single run.

What Are Surfboards in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight New Beginnings?
Surfboards are the collectible Trophy Pieces for the New Beginnings mission. Every mission in the game has its own themed trophy collectibles. In this mission, five yellow Surfboards are scattered across the Gotham Docks area. Destroying all five earns you the Surfboard Batcave Trophy, which you can display as a decoration inside the Batcave hub.
The mission also contains one Nautical Red Brick. This Red Brick unlocks a dark blue, aqua, and yellow color scheme you can apply to your outfits and vehicles.
All 5 New Beginnings Surfboard Locations
Surfboard 1 — Next to the Shipping Container (After Gordon’s Foam Gun)

The first Surfboard appears shortly after Batman teams up with Jim Gordon and the foam cannon ability is unlocked. You will reach a section where you need to use Gordon’s Foam Gun to freeze a mechanism and then push a cart out of the way to clear the path.
Once you move the cart, look left toward the large shipping container. The first Surfboard is propped up right against it. It is easy to spot if you glance left before walking forward. Destroy it and continue.
Surfboard 2 — Right of the Crane (Base of the Wall)

Further into the docks, you will chase Flass past a crane. Detective Flass shoots the crane, which causes the machinery to become exposed and sends a container spinning rapidly. This is a scripted moment that tends to draw your eyes upward toward the action.
While this is happening, look to the right side at the base of the crane. The second Surfboard is leaning against the wall right there. It is sitting in plain sight but easy to miss because the spinning crane pulls your attention away. Grab it before moving on.
Surfboard 3 — Bottom of the Ladder (After Conveyor Belt Puzzle)

After the crane section, you will reach a conveyor belt of moving containers blocking the path. Use a Batarang to halt the belt, then switch to Jim Gordon and use his Foam Gun to freeze the machinery completely. Once the belt is stopped, you can proceed past the containers.
Just past this puzzle, Batman and Gordon get ambushed by enemies with guns and receive a tutorial on dodging enemy fire. The third Surfboard is directly ahead at the base of an orange ladder — right underneath the attacker position. It is in full view during the ambush. Clear the enemies, grab the Surfboard, then climb the ladder.
Surfboard 4 — Through the Vent (Left of the Ice Cream Truck)

This is the most commonly missed Surfboard in the mission. After the gunfire tutorial, climb the ladder onto the ledge and enter the small warehouse. Deal with the guard inside, then head down the ramp.
At the bottom of the ramp, turn left and look for a small vent or hole in the wall. Follow the trail of gold studs leading toward it and crawl through. When you exit the other side, turn left immediately. The fourth Surfboard is leaning against the wall near the water. Most players miss this because the level naturally directs you straight through the warehouse and out the other side rather than down toward the vent.
Surfboard 5 — Right of the Battering Ram (WayneTech Container)

The fifth and final Surfboard is near the end of the mission in the courtyard where you build the battering ram to reach Detective Flass.
When you reach this courtyard, do not build the battering ram or interact with Flass yet. Look to the right side of the buildable object. The fifth Surfboard is tucked behind a large WayneTech container, surrounded by explosive canisters. It is slightly hidden from view and easy to walk past if you go straight to the main objective. Grab it first, then handle everything else before approaching Flass.
Important: Once you start interacting with Flass, the mission moves forward and you cannot go back. Make sure all five Surfboards and the Red Brick are collected before you trigger that final scene.
New Beginnings Nautical Red Brick Location
The Nautical Red Brick is hidden in a small rooftop building in the same courtyard as the fifth Surfboard, near the battering ram section.

Here is how to get it:
- Locate the small building to the left of the battering ram machine. It has yellow and black warning signs on the outside.
- The building is locked from the ground level — you cannot enter through the front door.
- Use your grapple hook to climb up onto the roof of the building.
- Drop down through the open skylight on top.
- The Nautical Red Brick is inside the building waiting for you.
The Nautical Red Brick applies a dark blue, aqua, and yellow nautical color palette to your outfits and vehicles. It only activates on Batman’s suits, not on Bruce Wayne’s regular clothing.
What Do You Get for Collecting All Surfboards?
Collecting all five Surfboards in the New Beginnings mission rewards you with the Surfboard Batcave Trophy. This is a decorative item you can place inside the Batcave hub area. It also counts toward your overall mission completion percentage.
Together with the Nautical Red Brick, these six collectibles make up the full collectible set for New Beginnings. Clearing them all in one run keeps your completion tracker clean and saves you from replaying the mission later.
Can You Replay New Beginnings to Get Missed Surfboards?
Yes. If you miss any Surfboards on your first run, you can replay the New Beginnings mission from the Batcomputer in the Batcave at any time. None of the collectibles are permanently missable. However, the same rule applies here as in Infiltration — the mission replay function is not available immediately after finishing the mission. You need to progress further into the game before it unlocks.
That is why it is worth collecting everything in a single clean run using this guide rather than planning to return later.
Quick Tips for Finding All New Beginnings Surfboards
- Collect before triggering the Flass scene. The fifth Surfboard and the Red Brick are both near the battering ram. Get them before you interact with Flass or you will be locked out.
- Follow the gold studs. Several Surfboards have trails of gold studs pointing toward them. If you see a stud trail veering off the main path, follow it.
- Check near every puzzle trigger. Most Surfboards appear right after a mechanics tutorial or puzzle section where the game tries to push you forward quickly.
- Look right at the crane. It is a scripted moment that draws your eyes upward. The Surfboard is at ground level to the right.
- Go down the ramp in the warehouse. Surfboard 4 is below and behind the natural exit route most players take through the building.

Ending with the Note
All five Surfboards in New Beginnings are within reach during a single story run. The key is slowing down at each new area rather than rushing after Flass. Most Surfboards are off to one side of the main path, and gold stud trails hint at several of them. The Nautical Red Brick requires a quick rooftop detour but takes less than a minute once you know the spot.
Just remember to grab everything before you trigger the final Flass scene in the courtyard. That is the one point of no return in this mission, and it catches a lot of players by surprise.
