Add another name to the ever-growing pile of games losing their online life this year. EA has confirmed that Madden NFL 23 is getting its servers pulled on July 13, and this time it’s hitting every platform, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, all at once.
- Shutdown date: July 13, 2026
- Platforms affected: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- What’s going away: Online multiplayer, Ultimate Team, and all in-game purchases
- What still works: Offline modes remain playable on every platform
- Madden Points: Sales stopped back on January 12, any leftover balance expires for good on July 13
What Actually Happens When the Servers Go Dark
Once July 13 hits, Madden NFL 23 loses everything tied to an internet connection. That means no more online head-to-head matches, no Play Now Live, no online franchise leagues, and no way to spend or earn Madden Points. Anyone sitting on unused Madden Points needs to burn through them before the deadline, because once the servers go offline, that balance is gone for good with no refunds or transfers.
EA already pulled Madden Points from sale back in January, which was basically the first warning sign this shutdown was coming. Giving players roughly six months to spend down their balance is a fairly standard move before EA flips the switch on a game’s online side entirely.
Offline Modes Are Sticking Around, But Let’s Be Real
Technically, Madden NFL 23 isn’t disappearing completely. EA has confirmed offline modes will still be playable on every platform after the shutdown. So if you just want to run Franchise mode solo or mess around in exhibition games, that’s not going anywhere.
That said, let’s not pretend this isn’t basically the end of the game for most people. Modern Madden lives and dies by Ultimate Team and online multiplayer. Strip that out and you’re left with a pretty bare-bones experience compared to what the game actually shipped with. Calling it “still playable” is technically true, but it’s not the full picture for anyone who bought Madden NFL 23 to play online.
Why Is EA Shutting This Down Now?
This is basically the standard playbook for annual sports titles at this point. New entries drop every year, and once a couple newer versions have released, the older ones start losing support until the servers eventually get the axe. It keeps EA’s resources focused on the newest game while nudging remaining players toward upgrading. It’s the same pattern that’s played out with other yearly sports franchises, including recent WWE 2K server shutdowns.
The timing lines up almost too perfectly too. Madden NFL 27 is set to release on August 13, exactly one month after Madden NFL 23 goes dark. That’s not a coincidence, it’s EA clearing the runway for the next release while cutting support costs on a three-year-old game most players have already moved on from.
Madden NFL 23 Isn’t EA’s Only Shutdown This Year
2026 has already been a rough year for EA’s back catalog. Anthem’s servers closed back in January, The Sims Mobile followed shortly after, and Battlefield Hardline lost its online functionality earlier this summer. Madden NFL 23 now joins that list, and it likely won’t be the last one announced before the year wraps up. If you’ve got EA games gathering dust that still rely on online features, it might be worth checking EA’s official service update page every so often just to stay ahead of any surprises.
What You Should Do Before July 13
If you’re still playing Madden NFL 23 online, or you’re sitting on unspent Madden Points, the next couple weeks are your last real window to get anything out of it. After July 13, all that’s left is offline Franchise and exhibition play, no Ultimate Team, no online leagues, no more purchases. Once the date passes, that’s it, the online era of Madden NFL 23 officially becomes history.
