The Malefact of Fate quest in Beast of Reincarnation is where the mountains stop being a backdrop and start being an obstacle. Chapter 3: The Vessel puts you in The Great Wall Terraces — layered, vertical terrain full of Golems, ledges, and a boss encounter that will follow you for the rest of the game. This guide covers every objective in order, the Gran Wall elevator step, and a full breakdown of the Nue Malefact and Shidou fight, including the mechanic most players get caught off guard by.
You can pick up Beast of Reincarnation on PlayStation Store, Xbox, or Steam. If you want to know what kind of game you’re walking into before you start, our Beast of Reincarnation review scores roundup covers that in full.

What Is the Malefact of Fate Quest?
Malefact of Fate is a main quest in Beast of Reincarnation. It is part of Chapter 3, called The Vessel, which takes place in the Mountainous Region — specifically The Great Wall Terraces, the third main area in the game.
Chapter 3 has five quests total, completed in this order:
- Investigate the Strange Signal — Head to the source of the signal
- Malefact of Fate — Chase after the Malefact
- Pass the Gran Wall — Move the elevator
- Defeat the Malefact of Fate — Head to the Nushi’s lair
- Wait in the Cleanse Walker until Departure — Rest in the Cleanse Walker
Beast of Reincarnation has no side quests. Every quest listed above is part of the main campaign. The game is linear, so you do them in order.
Investigate the Strange Signal
Chapter 3 opens with a signal you need to track. Follow the map marker into The Great Wall Terraces. This is a large, multi-level zone with plenty to find if you take your time before pushing forward.
Before chasing the objective, explore the area. There are shrines, crop seedlings, documents, weapons, and Keeper Golems spread across the zone. Most of it is optional, but it is worth grabbing what you can while the area is fresh.
Key campsites to find early:
- Mountain Village: Entrance — follow the path left after the first bulkhead
- Mountain Plaza: Forefront — up the hill north of the village, right side before the open area; a Wandering Merchant is here selling the Bell Sword, Koo skills, and crafting manuals
- Mountain Overlook — northwest of the Nue boss area, among the ruined structures
Rest at a campsite and stock up on supplies before moving forward. You want full health going into the chase.

Malefact of Fate — Chase After the Malefact
Once the objective updates, you are chasing the Malefact of Fate through elevated mountain terrain. Emma’s hair grapple is your main tool here. Use it to swing between platforms, close gaps, and get to higher ground fast.
Hostile Golems fill the area. You do not need to fight every one. Take down the ones blocking tight passages and avoid the rest where you can. Backstabs save health during the chase.
Follow the path through the Great Forest zone and into the upper terraces. The map marker keeps you on track. Near the Great Forest Entrance campsite, look for a Storyteller Golem. Talk to it and listen to the story — it gives you the Hunter’s Sword for free.
Pass the Gran Wall — Move the Elevator
This is the progression gate in Chapter 3. You reach the Gran Wall and need to move the elevator to continue. Here is the step-by-step:
- Head north of the Flower Field Tower campsite, following the path through the ruined metal structures toward the Titan Buddha area.
- Find the elevator at the base of the Gran Wall. Step into the designated spot on the lift platform to activate it — a broken Cleanse Walker sits on top of the platform above.
- Ride the elevator up and cross the broken bridge beyond it.
- The Campsite: Old Sagami Colony: Approach is right before the boss area. Rest here and use any remaining upgrades before going in.
The Maze of Sin is an optional underground area, accessible from a hatch northeast of Flower Square: Forefront. It is not required for the main quest but has extra skill ambers and documents if you want them.
Defeat the Malefact of Fate — Nue Malefact and Shidou Boss Fight
After passing the Gran Wall, follow the path to the Nushi’s lair. The boss here is Nue Malefact and Shidou — referred to by some players as the Male Purifier. This is the first of three times you will face this duo across the game. The second encounter is in the Fuji Frontier Zone and the third is in the Mount Hiei Zone. Their attack patterns do not change between encounters, but damage scales up each time.
How the Fight Works
This is a duo boss fight, but it is structured fairly. Nue and Shidou alternate focusing on you — only one attacks at a time. The game’s lock-on system does the targeting for you, automatically switching to whoever is about to move. Do not override it manually. Let the reticle guide you and focus entirely on whoever it points to. Each rotation lasts roughly a minute.
How to Beat Nue Malefact
Nue Malefact is the bigger of the two, with a larger health pool. His attacks are heavy but readable.
- Giant Leap — Nue jumps back, glows red, and leaps into the air. Dodge right before he lands to execute a perfect dodge.
- Throwing Punches (Claw Swipes) — Five consecutive claw swipes followed by a body slam. Parry each one and keep your eye on the claw throughout.
- Tail Spin — Nue raises his tail and spins twice. Each swing comes about two seconds apart and can be parried.
- Lightning Strikes — Late in the fight, Nue summons lightning while you are fighting Shidou. Keep dodging left and right to avoid it without losing focus on Shidou.
Best strategy: Use Koo’s Higanbana: Roots Bloom Art. It can bind Nue in place for a short window. When Bind procs, activate Entanglement Overdrive to slow time and extend the window. Nue also pauses briefly after his claw string and belly flop — that is your free damage window. Hit him there, then back off.
How to Beat Shidou (the Male Purifier)
Shidou is faster and more dangerous despite having a smaller health pool. His moves are fewer but punish mistakes hard.
- Sword Flurry — Shidou pulls his sword to his left hip and strikes upward then downward. Sometimes done twice in a row for four total hits. Parry each one with about a second between each parry.
- Branch Swing — Shidou turns his arm into a branch and swings right then back left. Parry each swing; about a second and a half between them.
- Tree Slam — Shidou conjures a tree, rises into the air glowing red, then leaps down. Dodge right before impact for a perfect dodge.
- Siphon — When Shidou’s health drops low, he extends toward Nue Malefact and begins draining his health to heal himself. This is a free window that turns into a major problem if you let it complete.
The Siphon is the most important mechanic in this fight. The moment you see Shidou begin siphoning health from Nue, run directly to him and hit him with Nushi skills as fast as possible. Sustained Nushi pressure will stun him and break the channel. If you let it finish, Shidou heals a significant amount, making the fight longer and harder than it needs to be.
Best strategy: Use Koo’s Kiku: Bloom Strike. It deals solid damage and almost always knocks Shidou to the ground, stunning him. The moment he goes down, activate Entanglement Overdrive to slow time and pour Nushi skills into him while he cannot move. Parrying builds Koo’s FP meter, so get the parry timing down — it feeds directly into your ability to use this combo.

Chapter 3 Boss Rewards
After defeating Nue and Shidou in The Great Wall Terraces, you earn:
- Bloom Art: Asagao Boa
- Blade Art: Asagao
- Nushi Skill: Chimeric Flow (from the full Nue and Shidou encounter at Old Sagami Colony)
A second Nue encounter earlier in the zone also rewards Emma – Blade Art: Kiku, Koo – Bloom Art: Kiku, and Nushi Skill: Creeping Kiku.
If you are tracking all trophies, the Beast of Reincarnation achievements guide lists everything tied to Chapter 3 and beyond.
Wait in the Cleanse Walker until Departure
After the boss fight, return to the Cleanse Walker and rest. This closes Chapter 3: The Vessel and moves you into Chapter 4: Stems, which takes place in the Pilgrim’s Zone.
Collectibles Not to Miss in The Great Wall Terraces
Nothing in Beast of Reincarnation is permanently missable — you can return to any area after the story. But here is what is worth grabbing while you are already here:
- Shrines #4 through #11 — spread across the whole zone
- Lore Painting — south of Mountain Overlook campsite; shoot the explosive container through the metal grate to break the wall and enter the hidden room
- Hunter’s Sword — beside the Great Forest Entrance campsite; talk to the Storyteller Golem and listen to their story
- Document: What is Sin? — north of Mountain Village Entrance campsite, on a Golem body
- Skill Amber: Aquatic Fang — defeat the Elite Malefact northwest of Ruined Road Square campsite
- Skill Amber: Shocking Fang — defeat the Elite Malefact northwest of Flower Square: Forefront
- Subcity of Flowers — optional underground area entered from a hatch northeast of Flower Square: Forefront; contains an Elite Golem, a Keeper Golem, Skill Amber: Bull Incense, and the Document: Diary of a Pilgrim
How Chapter 3 Connects to the Rest of the Game
Chapter 3 is the first time the game puts a specific human antagonist in focus. Shidou and his connection to Nue Malefact becomes a through-line that runs deep into the story. You are not just clearing corruption here — you are chasing someone who clearly has a reason to keep running.
The patterns you learn in this fight pay off in Chapters 6 and 11 when the duo returns. Each rematch hits harder, so taking the time to understand the Siphon mechanic and Koo’s counter-play options now is time well spent. If you want context on how the earlier areas connect, the Ancient Civilization Zone guide covers Chapter 2 and shows how the game builds its world region by region.
Frequently Asked Questions
What chapter is the Malefact of Fate quest in?
It is in Chapter 3: The Vessel, set in the Mountainous Region – The Great Wall Terraces. It is the second of five quests in that chapter.
How do I use the elevator in Pass the Gran Wall?
Head north from the Flower Field Tower campsite through the ruined metal structures to the Titan Buddha area. The elevator sits at the base of the Gran Wall. Step into the designated spot on the lift platform to activate it, then ride it up and cross the broken bridge to reach the boss area.
How many times do you fight Nue Malefact and Shidou total?
Three times across the full game — first in The Great Wall Terraces (Chapter 3), second in the Fuji Frontier Zone, and third in the Mount Hiei Zone. Their moves stay the same but the damage increases each time.
What is the Siphon attack and how do I stop it?
