Marvel’s Wolverine: Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Brutal Combat, and Everything Shown at State of Play

wolverine game officially reveals jean grey sabretooth and brutal god of war style combat

Insomniac Games kicked off the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play in the most Wolverine way possible — by opening with claws, blood, and about seven minutes of straight-up gameplay. No padding, no fluff. Just Logan tearing through cybernetic mercenaries while Jean Grey obliterates things with telekinesis and Sabretooth lurks around the corner. Marvel’s Wolverine is releasing September 15, 2026 exclusively on PS5, pre-orders are live now, and this is the most we’ve seen of the game yet.

Here’s a full breakdown of everything revealed — characters, combat mechanics, story setup, pre-order editions, and the details worth actually getting hyped about.

The Story Setup: Mutants Are Being Hunted

The extended gameplay trailer finally gives us a proper look at the story context for this game. Logan left his mutant task force Team X three years ago. He’s dragged back in when mutants start going missing — hunted down and captured by a cybernetic guns-for-hire militia called the Reavers. Their client? Bolivar Trask — a billionaire industrialist with a genuinely old-school X-Men villain motivation: absolute belief in human superiority over mutants.

This is peak X-Men story territory. Mutants living in the shadows, society unaware they even exist, and the only people who can protect them being a fractured team that Logan already walked out on once. The official description from Insomniac puts it perfectly: “Logan knows the world needs a hero. However, they’ll have to settle for Wolverine.” That single line tells you everything about the tone of this game.

Jean Grey Is In — And She Hits Hard

The biggest new reveal from the State of Play is Jean Grey, confirmed as a major companion character in the game. The gameplay shows what appears to be Logan and Jean’s first meeting — they don’t seem to know each other going in, which is an interesting creative choice that separates this from the comics continuity most people know.

Jean is described as a “powerful telekinetic and emergent leader of the captured mutants,” and she puts those powers to work constantly during the fight sequence shown. While Logan handles the close-range slicing, Jean is psychically wrecking enemies in the background, hurling Reavers around and creating openings for Critical Strikes — devastating co-op finishing moves that Logan can execute solo or with companion characters. The dynamic is clearly being modeled after how Peter Parker and Miles Morales worked together in Spider-Man 2, which is a very good sign for how teammate interactions will feel in practice.

The teamup sequence also involved a lengthy car-based combat section on top of a moving Reaver convoy — equal parts brutal and cinematic, with the kind of environmental chaos that reminded people of Uncharted more than anything else.

Sabretooth, Mystique, and More Mutant Cameos

Jean Grey isn’t the only familiar face. The trailer ended with a rapid-fire montage of character teases, and Sabretooth was the unmistakable highlight. Logan’s most personal nemesis showing up was inevitable, and now it’s confirmed. We also got looks at Mystique, what appeared to be a young Leech among the captured mutants, and — if the internet is reading the footage right — what might be a red ninja who looks an awful lot like Deadpool. Insomniac hasn’t confirmed that last one, so take it with appropriate skepticism, but the speculation is already everywhere.

The previously teased Omega Red is still in the mix as a villain, and the game is set across multiple locations including Canada, Japan, and Madripoor — the Marvel island nation that’s basically the criminal underworld’s home base in the comics. That’s a lot of real estate for a single-player linear game, and it suggests the scope here is meaningfully bigger than what the earlier teasers implied.

How Combat Actually Works: The Rage System

The gameplay deep dive gave a proper look at how fighting works mechanically, and it’s more layered than a hack-and-slash. Every successful attack, parry, and kill builds up the Logan’s Rage meter. Higher Rage enables stronger attacks and lets Logan activate his Healing Factor — which you’ll need, because enemies do visible damage. The footage showed Logan’s suit getting shredded, skin being torn away, and the regeneration visibly stitching him back together in real time. That’s exactly what Wolverine combat should look like.

Push the Rage meter far enough and you can trigger Rage Tier 3, which shifts the entire screen into a monochromatic black-and-white art style inspired by Marvel Comics’ Black, White, and Blood series. It’s a genuinely cool visual choice that makes Rage Tier 3 feel like a distinct mode rather than just a stat buff. When you’re completely backed into a corner, you can also burn Rage to activate Last Stand, kick the Healing Factor into overdrive, and survive hits that would put most characters down permanently.

Logan also has special combat moves called Techniques — abilities like Tornado Spin and Bull Rush that can be unlocked and swapped out, letting you build a playstyle that suits how you want to approach fights. There’s also an Adaptations system mentioned in the official description, though full details on that weren’t shown in the trailer.

    Pre-Order Editions and Pricing

Marvel’s Wolverine is a PS5 exclusive launching at $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Insomniac has hinted a Collector’s Edition is coming but hasn’t announced it yet.

    Pre-ordering either edition gets you:

    • Classic Brown Suit early unlock
    • Reflective Claws early unlock
    • 1 Technique Point
    • 4 PlayStation Avatars featuring Logan, Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabretooth

The Digital Deluxe Edition adds on top of that:

    • 5 exclusive suits: Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, and New Leather
    • 5 exclusive claw sets: Smooth-Edged, Hollow Blade, Serrated Spine, Tapered, and Thick Claws
    • 3 additional Technique Points

Insomniac confirmed that all suits and claws are purely cosmetic — they don’t affect gameplay stats. The Technique Points are effectively a small progression head start, not a pay-to-win situation. The Age of Apocalypse suit in the Deluxe bundle is a particularly strong get for comics fans — and a few of the suits apparently make Logan look distinctly Hugh Jackman-coded, which is a fun touch.

What Kind of Game Is This, Exactly?

Marvel’s Wolverine is a linear, narrative-driven single-player action game — not an open world. Insomniac has been clear about that, and the gameplay trailer reinforces it: tightly directed combat sequences, cinematic setpieces, character-driven story beats. Think God of War in terms of pacing and combat feel, not Spider-Man in terms of structure. That’s a deliberate shift from the open-world formula Insomniac used for the Spider-Man games, and given how well a focused linear approach worked for the God of War series, there’s every reason to believe it’ll work here too.

The voice cast includes Liam McIntyre (JD Fenix from Gears of War) as Logan, bringing a rougher, wearier energy to the character that fits the “guy who’s been through too much” tone the story is going for. Logan isn’t presented as a hero here. He’s a weapon with a conscience, dragged back into a fight he didn’t want, in a world where mutants are hunted. Classic Wolverine, executed properly.

September 15 is coming fast. If you’re filling out your fall 2026 gaming calendar, this is sitting right alongside some heavy competition — Silent Hill: Townfall drops September 24, just nine days later. Between those two and GTA 6 in November, fall 2026 is shaping up to be genuinely brutal for gaming wallets.
