All Hozuki Pouches in Onimusha: Way of the Sword – Locations, Effects and Upgrades

    By Sacheen · September 7, 2026 · 14 min read
All Hozuki Pouches in Onimusha Way of the Sword

    TL;DR

    • There are 5 Hozuki Pouch types in total: Default, Regeneration, Aggressor, Resistance, and Awakening.
    • You need 9 collectible items — 4 Oni Cloths and 5 Skeleton Hozuki — to unlock and fully upgrade all pouches.
    • All pouch materials are found in Eastern Kyoto, mostly in hidden Genma strongholds.
    • Upgrading starts after the main story quest “Patching up the Pouch” via Okuni.
    • Each pouch reaches Level 3 max — and each Level 3 upgrade costs one Skeleton Hozuki.
    • Collecting and maxing all pouches unlocks the Medical Marvel trophy and achievement.
    • Nothing is permanently missable — all locations stay open until the final mission cutoff.

Hozuki Pouches are Musashi’s primary consumables in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. They are not all the same. Some heal you instantly. Some slowly recover health over time. And some do not heal you at all — they refill your Oni Power or charge your Oni Awakening gauge instead. Picking the right pouch for the right fight makes a real difference, especially on tougher boss encounters. If you are new to how combat works, our combat and controls guide breaks it all down.

This guide covers every Hozuki Pouch in the game — what each one does, where to find all 9 collectible materials, exact upgrade costs for every level, and how to unlock the Medical Marvel trophy. If you are also working toward full completion, you may want to pair this with our trophy and achievements guide for the full roadmap.

What Are Hozuki Pouches in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

A Hozuki Pouch is what Musashi uses during combat to recover his resources. You activate it by pressing D-Pad Up. The default pouch gives an immediate burst of health. But as you progress and find the right Oni Cloth materials for Okuni, you can unlock four additional pouch types, each with a completely different effect.

Here is how the pouch system works at a basic level:

    • You carry charges in your equipped pouch. Charges refill at Spirit Mirrors or by using Sun Dried Hozuki items found in the world.
    • You can only equip one pouch at a time, but you can swap between them at any Spirit Mirror.
    • Pouches have 3 upgrade levels. Higher levels improve the strength of the pouch’s effect and may increase the number of charges you can carry.
    • Upgrading is done through Okuni at Enma’s Hall. She unlocks this service after the main story quest “Patching up the Pouch.”
    • Level 3 upgrades each require one Skeleton Hozuki — a rare collectible with only 5 in the entire game. One per pouch, so you need all 5 to max everything out.

All 5 Hozuki Pouch Types and What They Do

There are 5 distinct Hozuki Pouch types in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Here is what each one does and when to use it.

    Default Hozuki Pouch

    Effect: Instant health recovery

This is the pouch Musashi starts with and upgrades through the “Patching up the Pouch” mission. It gives you a quick, reliable burst of health the moment you use it — no delay, no waiting for regeneration. This is the safest choice for players learning the game, and it stays useful throughout the whole playthrough. If you have taken a heavy hit and need health right now, the Default is what you reach for.

Best for: Reactive healing after taking damage, beginners, any situation where you need health immediately.

    Regeneration Hozuki Pouch

Effect: Gradually recovers health and restores Stamina over time

The Regeneration Pouch heals more total health than the Default, but it does so slowly over time rather than all at once. It also restores your Stamina bar, which means you can block attacks more without getting exhausted. The key difference is timing — you need to pop this before you are in serious danger, not after a big hit has already landed. If you are staying in the fight and taking chip damage rather than getting burst down, this is a strong long-term choice.

Best for: Extended fights where you are taking consistent low-level damage, stamina management in boss fights.

    Aggressor Hozuki Pouch

Effect: Gradually refills Oni Power and Reflex Gauge — does not heal health

The Aggressor Pouch provides no healing at all. Instead, it refills your Oni Power gauge (used for Oni Armaments) and your Reflex Gauge (used for counterattacks after a perfect dodge). This is the offensive option. If you are comfortable avoiding damage and want to keep your Oni Armaments available more often, this pouch keeps the pressure on without needing to wait for blue souls to recharge your gauge naturally. It is one of the harder pouches to use well because you are trading your healing for aggression.

Best for: Aggressive players who can dodge reliably, keeping Oni Armaments fueled in longer boss fights. Pair with our Oni Armaments guide to get the most from this pouch.

    Resistance Hozuki Pouch

Effect: Gradually restores health and Oni Power over time

The Resistance Pouch is the middle ground between the Regeneration and Aggressor pouches. It slowly brings back both your health and your Oni Power at the same time. This means you can stay alive in a fight while also keeping your armament options available — without having to choose between one or the other. Like Regeneration, it works over time, so you need to use it before things get critical. If you want to fight bosses aggressively without giving up your healing entirely, this is the most balanced choice.

Best for: Players who want both healing and armament fuel, extended boss fights, hybrid playstyles.

    Awakening Hozuki Pouch

Effect: Gradually refills Oni Power and charges the Oni Awakening Gauge

The Awakening Pouch is the most aggressive option in the game and the hardest to use well. It provides no health recovery at all. Instead, it refills your Oni Power and charges your Oni Awakening Gauge — the resource that lets Musashi enter his powerful transformation state. If you are skilled enough to avoid taking damage and want to chain Awakening states together in a boss fight, this pouch feeds that strategy. Note that this pouch can only be upgraded after you defeat Shuten-Doji, as it requires boss drop materials.

Best for: Advanced players, Oni Awakening-focused builds, the endgame. See our Shuten-Doji boss guide to unlock this pouch’s upgrade path.

All 9 Hozuki Pouch Collectible Locations

To unlock all 5 pouches and upgrade each one to Level 3, you need to collect 9 items spread across Kyoto: 4 Oni Cloths (one for each non-default pouch) and 5 Skeleton Hozuki. These locations appear as Pouch Markers on your map after you complete the “Patching up the Pouch” mission. All areas stay accessible until the final mission cutoff at “The Clash at Rendaino.”

Each Oni Cloth location also has a Skeleton Hozuki nearby — except the fifth Skeleton Hozuki, which comes from a side quest. It is worth clearing each area completely before moving on.

Location 1 – Oni Cloth (Regeneration) + Skeleton Hozuki #1

Area: Southeast Kyoto, near the Gojo Street (East) Spirit Mirror

You cannot reach this spot from the street directly. Start by entering the courtyard to the north and fight your way through the area. Climb up to the rooftops, cross over the street, then drop down into the hidden courtyard below. Once you land, activate Oni Power to reveal an Oni Marker. Interact with it to make the chest containing the Oni Cloth (Regeneration) appear. The Skeleton Hozuki #1 chest is right next to it, just inside the nearby Oni Gate. Open both before you leave.

Location 2 – Oni Cloth (Aggressor) + Skeleton Hozuki #2

    Area: Southwest Kyoto

Go around the southern side of the houses in the southwest district and enter the attic of the southern home using the ladder you find there. Head through until you reach an Oni Gate guarded by two genma barrier cores — one inside a barn, one on the watchtower. Destroy both to open the gate, then defeat the enemies inside. Once through, turn right and look for a gap in the wall you can crawl under. On the other side, use Oni Vision in front of the shrine to reveal the hidden chest holding the Oni Cloth (Aggressor). The Skeleton Hozuki #2 chest sits in an alcove just inside the gate — you will see it when you enter and head right. Grab it before crawling under the wall.

Location 3 – Oni Cloth (Resistance) + Skeleton Hozuki #3

Area: South of the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror

From the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror, head south toward the Pouch Marker. On the west side of the buildings, find the ladder and climb onto the roof of the house. Use Oni Agility to sprint across and reach the courtyard on the other side of the street. Fight through the area until you reach a Malice Barrier. Break the barrier open, then use Oni Vision inside to reveal the hidden chest containing the Oni Cloth (Resistance). The Skeleton Hozuki #3 chest is right at the same barrier location — it is visible as soon as you break through. Do not miss it.

For more on navigating Malice areas, our Malice fog guide covers everything you need.

Location 4 – Oni Cloth (Awakening) + Skeleton Hozuki #4

Area: Northeast of the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror

Head into the area northeast of the Yasaka Pagoda. Look for an Oni wall blocked by a spider hand — kill the spider to open it. Go through and defeat Byakue to proceed forward. In the next courtyard, you will face a large group of Genma while Special Form Hitotsume Gasa enemies shoot at you from the walls. Once you have cleared the whole courtyard, find the scaffolding passage in the northwest corner and crawl through to the area beyond. Use Oni Vision to reveal the chest containing the Oni Cloth (Awakening). The Skeleton Hozuki #4 chest is in the northern part of the courtyard you just cleared — check there before crawling through the scaffolding. For help with the Byakue fight in this area, see our guide on how to beat Byakue.

    Location 5 – Skeleton Hozuki #5

Area: Hidden Treasure No. 5 Chance Encounter (late game)

The fifth and final Skeleton Hozuki does not come from a standard chest location. It is tied to the “Hidden Treasure No. 5” Chance Encounter side story, which becomes available later in the game. This is the one most players miss if they are not actively checking the side story board. Make sure you complete this Chance Encounter before reaching the point of no return at the final mission.

    How to Upgrade Hozuki Pouches

All pouch upgrades are handled by Okuni at Enma’s Hall. The upgrade system unlocks after you complete the main story mission “Patching up the Pouch.” Once unlocked, you bring her the right materials and she upgrades the pouch on the spot. Each pouch goes from Level 1 to Level 2 to Level 3, with Level 3 requiring one Skeleton Hozuki in addition to the standard crafting materials.

Here are the full upgrade costs for every pouch:

    Default Hozuki Pouch Upgrade Costs

    • Level 1: Obtained automatically during “Patching up the Pouch”
    • Level 2: 2 Hempen Cloth + 2 Cotton Cloth + 2 Leather + 1 Fine Silk Cloth
    • Level 3: 3 Cotton Cloth + 2 Leather + 1 Fine Silk Cloth + 1 Skeleton Hozuki

    Regeneration Hozuki Pouch Upgrade Costs

    • Level 1: Crafted from Oni Cloth (Regeneration) via Okuni
    • Level 2: 2 Hempen Cloth + 2 Cotton Cloth + 2 Leather
    • Level 3: 2 Hempen Cloth + 3 Cotton Cloth + 3 Leather + 1 Skeleton Hozuki

    Aggressor Hozuki Pouch Upgrade Costs

    • Level 1: Crafted from Oni Cloth (Aggressor) via Okuni
    • Level 2: 2 Whetstone + 2 Iron + 2 Tempered Iron
    • Level 3: 2 Whetstone + 3 Iron + 3 Tempered Iron + 1 Skeleton Hozuki

    Resistance Hozuki Pouch Upgrade Costs

    • Level 1: Crafted from Oni Cloth (Resistance) via Okuni
    • Level 2: 2 Whetstone + 2 Iron + 2 Tempered Iron + 1 Tamahagane
    • Level 3: 3 Iron + 2 Tempered Iron + 1 Tamahagane + 1 Skeleton Hozuki

    Awakening Hozuki Pouch Upgrade Costs

    • Level 1: Crafted from Oni Cloth (Awakening) via Okuni — only upgradeable after defeating Shuten-Doji
    • Level 2: 4 Malicite + 3 Byakue’s Talisman + 1 Malicite Mass
    • Level 3: 4 Malicite + 2 Dohatsu-ten’s Horn + 2 Malicite Mass + 1 Skeleton Hozuki

The Awakening pouch needs boss drop materials from late-game enemies like Dohatsu-Ten. For help farming those, check our guide on how to beat Dohatsu-Ten.

Medical Marvel Trophy – How to Unlock It

The Medical Marvel trophy and achievement requires two things: collecting all 9 Hozuki Pouch items and upgrading every single pouch to Level 3 maximum. Just finding the collectibles is not enough — all 5 pouches must be fully upgraded.

Here is the most efficient order to complete everything:

    • Complete “Patching up the Pouch” to unlock Okuni’s upgrade system.
    • Collect the Regeneration Oni Cloth and Skeleton Hozuki #1 in Southeast Kyoto.
    • Collect the Aggressor Oni Cloth and Skeleton Hozuki #2 in Southwest Kyoto.
    • Collect the Resistance Oni Cloth and Skeleton Hozuki #3 south of Shijo Street.
    • Collect the Awakening Oni Cloth and Skeleton Hozuki #4 northeast of Yasaka Pagoda.
    • Complete the “Hidden Treasure No. 5” Chance Encounter for Skeleton Hozuki #5.
    • Defeat Shuten-Doji to unlock the Awakening pouch upgrade path.
    • Return to Okuni and upgrade all 5 pouches to Level 3.
    • Medical Marvel unlocks the moment the last pouch reaches Level 3.

Since each Skeleton Hozuki is consumed by a Level 3 upgrade and there are exactly 5 of them for 5 pouches, you need every single one. Do not miss the Hidden Treasure No. 5 Chance Encounter. Upgrade your Spirit Mirror fast travel early to make backtracking across Kyoto quicker. Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Hozuki Pouches

    • Upgrade your Oni Vision skills early. Several Oni Cloth chests are hidden and only appear after using Oni Vision at a shrine or Oni Marker. If you have not upgraded Oni Vision, you will walk right past them. Our tips and tricks guide explains which skills to prioritize first.
    • Clear each Genma stronghold completely before leaving. Each of the 4 Oni Cloth areas contains both the cloth chest and a Skeleton Hozuki chest. Leaving early means two separate return trips instead of one.
    • Keep Sun Dried Hozuki items for hard boss fights. These items restore pouch charges mid-fight without needing a Spirit Mirror. Save them for encounters where you cannot afford to run dry.
    • Match your pouch to the fight. Default and Regeneration are better when you are taking hits. Aggressor and Awakening shine when you are dodging well and playing offensively. Resistance is the everyday choice that does a bit of both.
    • Do not upgrade Awakening first. It requires Shuten-Doji drop materials that you cannot get until late in the story. Focus the other four pouches first, then come back to it after the fight.
    • Use the Malice fog guide for tough access areas. Some Pouch Marker areas are behind Malice barriers. Our Malice fog guide covers how to clear them safely.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many Hozuki Pouches are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

There are 5 Hozuki Pouch types: Default, Regeneration, Aggressor, Resistance, and Awakening. To find and unlock all of them you need to collect 9 total items across Kyoto — 4 Oni Cloths and 5 Skeleton Hozuki.

What is the best Hozuki Pouch in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

It depends on your playstyle. The Default Pouch is the most reliable for players who need instant healing. The Resistance Pouch is the best all-round option for most fights because it restores both health and Oni Power at the same time. The Aggressor and Awakening Pouches are the strongest if you can avoid taking damage consistently, but they offer no healing at all.

Can you miss Hozuki Pouches permanently in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

No. All Hozuki Pouch locations remain accessible until the point of no return before the final mission “The Clash at Rendaino.” Even after finishing the story, selecting Continue from the main menu places you just before that cutoff so you can go back and collect anything you missed.

How do you unlock the Medical Marvel trophy in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

You need to collect all 4 Oni Cloths and all 5 Skeleton Hozuki, then use Okuni’s upgrade menu to bring every Hozuki Pouch to its maximum Level 3. The Awakening Pouch can only be upgraded after defeating Shuten-Doji, so that fight is a prerequisite for the trophy. The trophy unlocks the moment the fifth and final pouch hits Level 3.
