Onimusha: Way of the Sword – Complete Trophy & Achievements Guide (Platinum Roadmap)

    By Krushna Vasudeva · September 5, 2026 · 20 min read
Onimusha Way of the Sword–Complete Trophy Achievements
    • There are 52 trophies / achievements in total — 1 Platinum, 2 Gold, 9 Silver, 40 Bronze.
    • You need a minimum of 2 playthroughs. Beat the game once to unlock Carnage difficulty, then do New Game+ on Carnage.
    • The hardest trophies are True Onimusha (finish Carnage) and Glutton for Punishment (beat all bosses in Boss Rematch on every difficulty).
    • Nothing is missable — after finishing the story, the game lets you free-roam before the final mission to clean up collectibles.
    • Estimated platinum time is 60–70 hours. Difficulty is rated around 6.5 out of 10.
    • No online trophies. No DLC trophies required. No glitched trophies.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword trophy guide starts with one key fact — this platinum is not going to come on your first run. Capcom built this one around two playthroughs and a Boss Rematch grind on Carnage difficulty. Before you start optimising for trophies, it pays to understand how the game’s mechanics work at a deep level. Our combat and controls guide is a good place to start if you are new to the game’s parry and Issen system. The better your fundamentals, the less painful Carnage difficulty becomes later.

If you are still in the early stages, check out our tips and tricks for beginners for a solid head start on how to play efficiently from the very first session. This guide covers the full platinum roadmap, every trophy category, and specific tips for the ones that will slow you down most.

    Step-by-Step Platinum Roadmap

Step 1 — First Playthrough on Action Difficulty

Start the game on Action (Medium) difficulty. Do not start on Story (Easy). You want Action because it teaches you the timing of deflects, Issen counters, and boss patterns — skills you will need for Carnage later. Playing on Story might feel safer but it leaves you underprepared for New Game+.

One important recommendation: turn off Action Prompts early in your first run. Action Prompts tell you which button to press but not when. Carnage difficulty automatically removes them. If you rely on them throughout your first playthrough, you will feel lost when they disappear. Train without them from the start and you will adapt faster.

During this playthrough, explore thoroughly. Rescue citizens as you go, collect Genma Notes, find Lion Dogs, and pick up every Oni Armament you can. Use your Oni Vision skills to spot collectibles — specifically Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range. Buy these three special skills as early as possible. They make finding every hidden item significantly easier for the rest of the game.

Stop playing before you start the final mission “The Clash At Rendaino”. There is a point-of-no-return warning before you enter it. Once you cross it, free-roam ends. Do all your cleanup first.

Step 2 — Collectible Cleanup Before the Final Mission

Once your story missions are done but before the final mission, complete every remaining side quest and collectible. Here is everything you need to collect for the relevant trophies:

    • 8 Mysteries of Kyoto — Silver trophy: Demystified
    • 18 Chance Encounters — Silver trophy: No Job Too Small
    • 36 Lion Dogs — Silver trophy: For the Love of Dog
    • 7 Oni Armaments — Silver trophy: Oni Armory
    • 9 Hozuki Pouches — Silver trophy: Medical Marvel
    • 15 Charms — Silver trophy: Charmed Life
    • 23 Genma Notes — Bronze trophy: Genma-ologist
    • All Power Stones and Oni Stones — for skill upgrades (Well-Rounded)
    • All Fine Silk Cloths and Tamahagane — for equipment upgrades (Dressed to Kill)

Also handle your upgrade trophies here. Go to the Spirit Mirror and upgrade all basic and special skills as far as you can. Enhance your equipment and charms using the materials you have collected. For charms and pouches specifically, use this save scumming method: manually save when you have around 150,000 Favor and 135,000 Red Souls. Upgrade everything, then reload the save to put the Red Souls and Favor back. This lets you upgrade all charms without permanently spending souls you might need for your Carnage run setup.

Step 3 — Complete the Game (Final Mission)

Head into “The Clash At Rendaino” and finish the story. This awards:

    • Baited by Benkei (Bronze) — for the Benkei encounter at Rendaino
    • Truly, Thank You (Bronze) — for defeating the final boss, Minamoto no Yoshitsune
    • Genma-ologist (Bronze) — if all Genma Notes were collected
    • The Winding Way of the Sword (Bronze) — if all basic or special skills were learned

After the credits, Carnage difficulty unlocks for New Game+.

Step 4 — New Game+ on Carnage Difficulty

This is where the platinum gets serious. Start New Game+ and select Carnage difficulty. It is considerably harder than Action — bosses hit harder, take longer to kill, and Issen timing margins get tighter. There are no Action Prompts on Carnage.

The good news is that most of your progression carries over:

    • Carries over: Awakened Oni Abilities, enhanced Skills, Hozuki Pouches and Pouch Enhancements, Items, Charms and Charm Enhancements, Genma Notes, Lion Dogs
    • Does not carry over: Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, Clothing, Sword and Gauntlet Enhancements, Red Souls, Spirit Mirror unlock progress

The recommended charm loadout for Carnage is: Maxed Charm of Awakening (fills Awakening gauge faster), Maxed Charm of Oni Power (fills Oni Power gauge faster), and Maxed Fencer’s Strength Charm (boosts regular attack power). This setup helps you get into Oni Awakening state more frequently, which is critical against harder bosses. For the final boss specifically, also bring: Amulet of Introspection, Stimulants, Sun-Dried Hozuki, Greater Defense Talisman, Greater Might Talisman, and Heavy Restoratives. Save these consumables for the second half of Phase 2 and all of Phase 3 of Yoshitsune.

For detailed strategies on each boss fight on Carnage difficulty, our guide on how to beat Shuten Doji covers one of the trickiest mid-game encounters in full. Understanding his health regen mechanic and Phase 2 severed head patterns is essential before you attempt him on Carnage. Also see our full guide on mastering Issen, parry and deflect — on Carnage, getting these mechanics right is the difference between clearing a boss in three attempts or thirty.

Completing Carnage difficulty unlocks the True Onimusha (Gold) trophy. It also rewards you with a special weapon that makes the final step — Boss Rematch — significantly easier.

Step 5 — Boss Rematch (Glutton for Punishment)

The final trophy before Platinum is Glutton for Punishment (Gold). To unlock it, you must beat every boss in the Boss Rematch arena on every difficulty level. Boss Rematch is accessed through the Practice Grounds — go to Emma’s Hall, ring the bell in the corner, speak to Takamura inside, and select Boss Rematch.

The important thing to know: beating a boss on the hardest difficulty available counts for all lower difficulties too. So if you go straight to Carnage for each boss, you do not need to replay them on Story or Action separately. Use the special weapon you received for completing Carnage — it makes this significantly faster.

Note that Boss Rematch does not allow consumables. You cannot use Hozuki heals or talismans inside. This makes it harder than a normal story fight. Rely entirely on your combat skills — deflect, Issen, Oni Awakening. Our guide on Oni Armaments and Oni Power abilities explains how to manage your gauges efficiently, which is crucial when you cannot heal.

All 52 Trophies and How to Earn Them

    Platinum Trophy

Peerless (Platinum) — Earn all other trophies. Unlocks automatically once all 51 remaining trophies are earned.

    Gold Trophies

True Onimusha (Gold) — Complete the game on Carnage difficulty. Carnage unlocks after your first playthrough via New Game+. Turn off Action Prompts during your first run so you are already used to playing without them before Carnage removes them automatically.

Glutton for Punishment (Gold) — Beat all Boss Rematch opponents on all difficulty levels. Completing each boss on Carnage in Boss Rematch covers all lower difficulties automatically. Use the reward weapon from completing Carnage difficulty to make this more manageable.

    Silver Trophies

Demystified (Silver) — Complete all 8 Mysteries of Kyoto. These are side quests spread across the game world. Use Oni Vision: Treasures to spot them. Note: Mysteries of Kyoto do not carry over into New Game+, so complete them all before the final mission on your first run.

No Job Too Small (Silver) — Complete all 18 Chance Encounters. Small rescue events scattered across Kyoto. Like Mysteries, these reset in New Game+. Finish them all before the final mission.

For the Love of Dog (Silver) — Rescue all 36 Lion Dogs. Lion Dogs do carry over into New Game+ if you miss some. Explore every area thoroughly and use Oni Vision skills to track them down.

Oni Armory (Silver) — Acquire all 7 Oni Armaments. These are found across the map as you progress through the story and exploration. Our Oni Armaments guide covers each one in detail.

Medical Marvel (Silver) — Enhance all Hozuki Pouches to maximum level. There are 9 Hozuki Pouches to find and fully upgrade. Hozuki Pouches and their enhancements carry over into New Game+. Complete pouch upgrades during the collectible cleanup phase in Step 2.

Charmed Life (Silver) — Enhance all charms to maximum level. 15 charms total. Charm enhancements carry over into New Game+. Use the save scumming method described in Step 2 to efficiently upgrade without wasting souls permanently.

Well-Rounded (Silver) — Learn and upgrade all basic and special skills. Skills are unlocked and upgraded through the Spirit Mirror using Power Stones and Oni Stones. This requires collecting all 54 Power Stones and 54 Oni Stones across the map. The Bronze version (The Winding Way of the Sword) requires only all basic or special skills, not both.

Dressed to Kill (Silver) — Enhance all equipment to maximum level. This covers clothing, sword, and gauntlet enhancements. Fine Silk Cloths are needed for clothing upgrades and Tamahagane for sword upgrades. Gauntlet upgrades require Malicite, Byakue’s Talisman, Dohatsu-ten’s Horn, and Malicite Mass — materials dropped by specific bosses that respawn after certain story milestones.

Brutalist (Silver) — Land 50 Issen attacks. Issen is the core counter mechanic of the game — attack at the precise moment an enemy commits to their strike. This comes naturally over time. If you are short by the end of the game, the Practice Grounds Issen Drill can farm it quickly.

Key Bronze Trophies — Story Bosses

Each main boss defeat awards a Bronze trophy. You earn all of these by progressing through the story. Here is the full boss trophy list in order:

    • Onimusha Showdown — Defeat Sasaki Ganryu (tutorial boss)
    • Get Stuffed — Defeat Daidara
    • Twisted Fates — Defeat Rasho-gan
    • Howling Wind — Defeat Ifuu
    • Dokyo’s Fixation — Defeat the Greater Nue
    • Benkei: Out, but Not Down — Defeat Benkei
    • Crashing Lightning — Defeat Burai
    • Wide Awake — Defeat Shuten Doji (see our full Shuten Doji boss guide for both phases)
    • The Perfect Storm — Defeat Ifuu and Burai together
    • We Done Here? — Defeat Sasaki Ganryu at Arashiyama
    • End This Madness — Defeat Dokyo
    • Baited by Benkei — Defeat Benkei at Rendaino (final mission)
    • Truly, Thank You — Defeat Minamoto no Yoshitsune (final boss)

Key Bronze Trophies — Combat Challenges

Burning Blade (Bronze) — Defeat 50 enemies while in the Blazing State. The Blazing State fills by landing parries. It comes naturally over time. If you are short, the Blazing State Drill in Emma’s Hall can help, though it only spawns one enemy per session.

Stop Motion (Bronze) — Perform 50 Reflex Combos. A Reflex Combo triggers when you evade at the right moment and then counterattack. The Reflex gauge fills as you successfully dodge attacks. Again, this comes naturally but can be farmed in the Practice Grounds Reflex Combo Drill. For more on how this mechanic connects to the broader combat rhythm, see our Flow State trophy guide.

Wielder of Oni Armaments (Bronze) — Defeat 100 enemies with Oni Armaments. The Wind-Whipper is the best Armament for farming this — it hits multiple enemies at once. Use it on groups whenever your Oni Power gauge fills. If farming is needed at the end, any Oni Armament Drill in Emma’s Hall works.

Oni’s Oni (Bronze) — Defeat 50 enemies in the Oni Awakened state. Transform using both stick clicks together (L3 + R3) when the gauge is full, then clear mobs. Normal enemies die very fast in Oni form and each kill counts. The Oni Awakening Drill in Emma’s Hall can be used to farm this if needed.

Flow State (Bronze) — Defeat 50 enemies with Chain Issen attacks. A Chain Issen is a follow-up after a successful Issen where you press attack again during the flash animation to chain to the next enemy. Two or more hits in a chain count as one for this trophy. Our Flow State trophy guide has a dedicated breakdown of the exact timing you need.

Silent Violence (Bronze) — Assassinate 20 enemies. Sneak up behind enemies and use the assassination prompt for a one-hit kill. Running alerts enemies unless you unlock the Stealth While Running skill. Unlock it early and make assassinations a habit in every area.

Pinch Hitter (Bronze) — Deflect 50 projectiles. Hold forward and press Guard at parry timing to deflect arrows and magic attacks back at enemies. This comes naturally against ranged Genma throughout the game.

Deadeye (Bronze) — Score 100 headshots with your bow. Aim slightly above the enemy’s head to register a headshot. Archers and floating heads are the best targets. Deflecting an arrow back at an archer drains their stamina but keeps them alive, letting you follow up with a clean headshot.

Winning Is What Matters (Bronze) — Carry out 50 attacks with environmental objects. Kick barrels, throw kegs, flip planks, shoot explosive containers. You need 50 attacks that make contact with an enemy, not 50 kills. Actively look for environmental objects in every fight and use them consistently.

Untouchable (Bronze) — Perform 50 Grab Reversals. Watch for the lightning glow on an enemy’s grabbing hand. Dodge toward the enemy at the right moment to reverse it. Enemies telegraph this heavily. Every time you see the glow, dodge into it.

Coming Through! (Bronze) — Break an enemy’s guard 50 times. This means fully depleting a stamina bar. It happens constantly during normal play and is among the first trophies you will earn without trying.

Helm Splitter (Bronze) — Break 100 shields or pieces of enemy armor. Use your Oni Power (Oni Strength) to destroy enemy shields and armor. Heavy armored enemies like the Kogashira and Hitotsume Sho are ideal targets. The Oni Strength Drill in Emma’s Hall can be used for farming.

Get This Thing Off Me (Bronze) — Absorb 30 or more souls at once. Defeat 5 to 6 enemies quickly without absorbing souls between kills, then absorb everything at once. Check the soul count display at the top of the screen to track how many are floating before absorbing.

Berserker (Bronze) — Defeat 3 enemies with continuous Break Issen attacks. Bring three enemies low at the same time until each has a red dot indicating readiness for a finishing Issen. Execute one and the game points you at the next. Press the attack button again without delay to chain through all three. Groups of weaker enemies early in the game are the easiest spot for this.

Genma Griller (Bronze) — Set three enemies ablaze at once. Unlock the Firebird Flute and its Charged Shot skill. Charge the shot and fire it into a group of three or more enemies bunched together. If three catch fire simultaneously, the trophy pops.

Key Bronze Trophies — Exploration and Rescue

Mystery Solved (Bronze) — Complete your first Mystery of Kyoto. Unlocks on the first side quest of this type completed.

Life-Saver (Bronze) — Complete your first Chance Encounter. Unlocks on your first citizen rescue event.

Citizen Savior (Bronze) — Rescue 30 townspeople from Genma attacks. Random encounters where citizens are being attacked pop up across Kyoto. You must defeat the Genma and then speak to the citizen — just clearing the enemies without talking does not count. Stay alert to distress sounds in each area and respond to every encounter you come across.

Selfish Selflessness (Bronze) — Rescue a merchant being attacked by Genma. This happens randomly while going for Citizen Savior. You will almost certainly encounter one before you hit the 30-rescue mark.

No Dog Left Behind (Bronze) — Rescue your first Lion Dog. Earned on your first Lion Dog found.

Genma-ologist (Bronze) — Collect all 23 Genma Notes. These are scattered through the world and enemies. Track your collection via the Genma Notes menu subsection in the game’s menu.

Serves You Right (Bronze) — Defeat the Byakue at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Found behind the Oni Wall north of the Nio-mon Gate Spirit Mirror. You will encounter this enemy naturally during the Ace Archer Chance Encounter in that area.

Key Bronze Trophies — Upgrade Milestones

The Winding Way of the Sword (Bronze) — Learn and upgrade all basic or special skills. The Bronze version only requires completing one of the two skill trees, not both. Well-Rounded (Silver) requires both.

Looking Sharp (Bronze) — Enhance any piece of equipment for the first time. Unlocks the moment you make your first enhancement at the Spirit Mirror.

Health Is Wealth (Bronze) — Enhance any one Hozuki Pouch to maximum level. Pick whichever pouch you use most and prioritise upgrading it fully first.

A Real Charmer (Bronze) — Enhance any one charm to maximum level. Focus on the charm you are actually using in your main combat build first.

Second Helping (Bronze) — Beat any opponent once in Boss Rematch. Unlocks the moment you clear your first fight in the Boss Rematch arena.

What Carries Over Into New Game+

Knowing exactly what transfers saves you from wasting time upgrading things that reset. Here is the full breakdown:

    Carries OverDoes Not Carry Over
Awakened Oni AbilitiesMysteries of Kyoto completion
Enhanced basic and special SkillsChance Encounters completion
Hozuki Pouches and Pouch EnhancementsClothing enhancements
    ItemsSword enhancements
    Charms and Charm EnhancementsGauntlet enhancements
    Genma NotesRed Souls
    Lion DogsSpirit Mirror unlock progress

The main implication: do your Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters on the first playthrough. These reset and you would have to redo them if you leave them to New Game+. Everything else is either optional to redo or carries over safely.

    Carnage Difficulty Tips

Carnage is a big step up. Enemies hit considerably harder and bosses take longer to bring down. Here are the key things to know going in:

    • No Action Prompts. You are on your own for every parry and Issen window. This is why playing on Action without prompts from the start is so important.
    • Bosses behave dynamically. Take too much damage early in a fight and bosses can shift into their enhanced phase ahead of schedule, making them harder much sooner.
    • Use the right charm build. Charm of Awakening, Charm of Oni Power, and Fencer’s Strength Charm work well for most fights. Switch to Charm of Protection if a specific fight is punishing you too hard.
    • Oni Awakening is your most powerful tool. Save it for boss Phase 2 whenever possible. Do not waste it in Phase 1 when you can manage without it.
    • Almost everything can be Issen countered. The only exceptions are white-glowing attacks (parry or deflect only) and a handful of unreactable hits. If you see an attack that cannot be Issened, learn to parry it instead.
    • Avoid soul damage when given a choice. After breaking a boss’s stamina, the red soul option deals direct health damage but the purple soul option builds your gauges faster for Oni Awakening. In most cases, purple is the better pick unless you need to end the fight quickly.

For the toughest fights on Carnage, use our dedicated boss resources. The Sasaki Ganryu boss guide covers the fight many players struggle with most early in the run. For the game’s demanding final encounter, save your consumables hard — the fight against Yoshitsune has three phases and the third is punishing even with full preparation.

Farming Trophies in the Practice Grounds

Several combat trophies can be farmed efficiently in Emma’s Hall via the Practice Grounds. Each drill below gives you a controlled environment for its corresponding mechanic:

    • Issen Drill — for Brutalist (50 Issen attacks)
    • Chain Issen Drill — for Flow State (50 Chain Issen kills)
    • Blazing State Drill — for Burning Blade (50 Blazing kills, note: only 1 enemy per session)
    • Reflex Combo Drill — for Stop Motion (50 Reflex Combos)
    • Oni Armament Drills — for Wielder of Oni Armaments (100 Oni Armament kills)
    • Oni Awakening Drill — for Oni’s Oni (50 kills in Oni form)
    • Oni Strength Drill — for Helm Splitter (100 shield/armor breaks)

If you play the game aggressively and use these mechanics throughout your two playthroughs, most of these trophies will unlock naturally. The drills are really just a safety net for anything you fall short on at the end.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many playthroughs do you need for the Onimusha: Way of the Sword Platinum?

You need a minimum of two playthroughs. The first is on Action (Medium) difficulty to complete the story and unlock Carnage. The second is a New Game+ run on Carnage difficulty, which is required for the True Onimusha Gold trophy. After completing Carnage, you also need to clear all bosses in Boss Rematch mode on every difficulty, which is a separate step but does not require a full third playthrough.

Are any trophies missable in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

No trophies are missable. When you reach the final mission “The Clash At Rendaino,” the game warns you that free-roam ends. You can stop before accepting it and clean up all remaining collectibles, side quests, and combat trophies. After finishing the game, you can also select Continue from the main menu to return to the open world before the final mission. Nothing locks out permanently.

What is the hardest trophy to get in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

The hardest trophies are True Onimusha (completing Carnage difficulty) and Glutton for Punishment (beating all bosses in Boss Rematch on Carnage). Boss Rematch is extra challenging because you cannot use consumables like Hozuki heals or talismans — you fight on combat skills alone. The good news is that completing Carnage difficulty first gives you a powerful weapon that makes Boss Rematch considerably more manageable.

What is the fastest way to farm Oni Armament kills for Wielder of Oni Armaments?

The Wind-Whipper Oni Armament is the best for this. It hits multiple enemies in one attack, meaning you can rack up several kills per gauge use. Throughout the game, use it whenever your Oni Power gauge fills and there is a group of enemies nearby. If you are still short at the end, any Oni Armament Drill in the Practice Grounds at Emma’s Hall lets you run the kills in a controlled environment without replaying story sections.
