BlizzCon 2026 Was Huge for Overwatch — And the Reworks Stole the Show

BlizzCon 2026 was a big deal for Overwatch fans across the board. Blizzard revealed Doctrine, a vampire-themed Support hero launching in Season 5, confirmed a free Mythic skin giveaway for all players who complete a match during the month following the convention, and teased the next Overwatch Spotlight event for February 2027. But two of the biggest announcements came in the form of full hero reworks for two of the game’s most historically controversial characters: Sombra and Roadhog. Both heroes have been sources of frustration for the competitive community for years, and Blizzard is finally swinging for something more than a stat adjustment. These are genuine kit overhauls, and they both go live on October 6, 2026 with the start of Season 5.

Associate Game Director Alec Dawson presented the rework details during the BlizzCon developer panel, with the team laying out the philosophy clearly: they want healing and utility to stop being locked to fixed backline positions. Doctrine, Sombra, and Roadhog’s changes all point in the same direction — more flexibility in how support and damage mitigation get distributed across the team. For Sombra, that means becoming a Support. For Roadhog, it means becoming a better teammate without losing what makes him recognizably Roadhog.

Sombra Rework — From Recon Damage to Tactician Support

This is the big one. Sombra is leaving the Damage role entirely and becoming a Tactician Support, making her one of the more dramatic role-swaps in Overwatch history. Her entire identity is being rebuilt around healing and team utility while keeping the core stealth and disruption elements that define her as a character. She’s not just getting some heal numbers tacked onto her old kit — her abilities have fundamentally changed.

    Hotfix Replaces Hack

Sombra’s iconic Hack ability is gone, replaced by Hotfix. Instead of disabling enemy abilities, Hotfix now applies a heal-over-time to allies, restoring 65 HP instantly followed by 25 HP per second over time for up to 200 HP total. Crucially, Hotfix still carries over part of Hack’s utility — Sombra can still use it to disable health packs and enemy deployables. The health pack hack duration has been reduced from 45 seconds to 30 seconds, but the trade-off is that it no longer costs a cooldown to do so. Hotfix comes with two charges, giving Sombra consistent healing output across a fight rather than a single burst every cooldown cycle.

    Cyberspace Replaces Virus

Sombra’s Virus ability, which previously applied damage-over-time to enemies, has been completely replaced by Cyberspace. This ability fires a projectile that explodes on impact, creating an area-of-effect zone with dual functionality: it deals 40 HP explosion damage followed by 25 HP per second over three seconds to enemies caught inside, while simultaneously restoring 60 HP on detonation and 30 HP per second afterward for allies. It also applies a 50% debuff to enemy damage and healing output while they’re in the zone. In short, Cyberspace is a zone-control ability that simultaneously pressures enemies and sustains teammates — a major shift from Virus, which was purely offensive.

    What Sombra Keeps

Not everything is gone. Sombra’s Machine Pistol remains her primary weapon, keeping her short-range burst capability. Her Translocator is staying too, though with reduced range, and still allows her to throw a beacon, teleport, and enter a brief stealth window. Her Ultimate, EMP, also remains — dealing percentage-based damage, hacking nearby enemies, and destroying barriers — though its role now leans into the Support kit around it rather than being the closing kill tool it previously was.

    Sombra’s New Perks

All of Sombra’s Perks have been redesigned to fit her new role. Life Hack causes EMP to apply Hotfix to nearby allies when used, turning her ultimate into a team sustain tool on top of its offensive disruption. CTRL ALT ESC starts a passive health regeneration when Sombra uses Translocator while below half health, giving her survivability to keep doing her Support job in the backline. Data Packet reduces Hotfix’s main cooldown after Sombra hacks health packs, rewarding proactive map control. And Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace’s healing output on any ally below half health, making her AoE zone a more powerful clutch tool in desperate situations.

Blizzard’s developer team was confident during the panel. Game designer Kennedy explained it directly: “You can heal your allies while still doing the things that make Sombra great — you heal your allies, you’re allowed to move around the battlefield invisibly, and then sort of interact with the opposition and your allies at the same time. We’re really confident and really happy with the way that this support change came through.” Art director Dion Rogers simply said he was surprised by how fun she turned out to be in testing.

The community reaction has been predictably split. Long-time Sombra mains are mourning the loss of Hack, calling it a fundamental change to her identity. Others in the Overwatch competitive scene are relieved to finally see her stealth and disruption toolkit given an actual support purpose that justifies her presence in a team comp beyond just annoying enemies. The key thing she keeps is her movement — Translocator and stealth are still there, just now wrapped around a healing playstyle rather than a solo-pick playstyle.

Roadhog Rework — Less One-Shot, More Team Tank

Roadhog’s rework is less drastic than Sombra’s — he’s staying as a Tank — but the philosophy behind it is equally significant. For years, Roadhog’s hook combo has been one of Overwatch’s most complained-about mechanics. The ability to single-handedly pull a target in, shoot them, and delete them before anyone can react has frustrated players at every level of play. Blizzard acknowledged this directly during the panel, with Kennedy saying the team wanted to make the hook combo feel like it has more counterplay without taking the hook away entirely, since the hook is the identity of the hero.

Trash Compactor — The New Third Ability

The headline addition is Trash Compactor, a brand new ability that replaces the Scrap Gun’s old alternate fire. Trash Compactor absorbs incoming enemy projectiles for two seconds, compressing them into an explosive ball of scrap that Roadhog can then launch back at enemies. It deals between 85 and 210 HP of direct-hit damage depending on how much it’s been charged, plus up to 200 HP of AoE damage within a two-meter radius. Think of it like D.Va’s Defense Matrix or Sigma’s Grasp — a window for Roadhog and his teammates to push forward while projectiles are being absorbed, followed by a punishing return blast.

Trash Compactor also has a secondary use that nobody saw coming: it can function similarly to a rocket jump, giving Roadhog vertical mobility that he has never had before. That’s a genuinely surprising addition for a hero who has always been defined by his slow, heavy ground presence. Blizzard’s Kennedy framed it as solving Roadhog’s other long-standing problem beyond the hook: “Roadhog is a tank that doesn’t do anything to help my team get space. So we wanted to give him a tool that enables him to move forward. With Trash Compactor, you’re absorbing damage similar to D.Va Matrix — it sort of becomes this window for allies to be able to move forward and work forward together.”

    Scrap Gun Changes

Roadhog’s Scrap Gun has also been adjusted. The weapon now fires in two bursts rather than a single volley, with total damage increased to 204–61.2 HP split across both shots. This requires more precision to land maximum damage and should help prevent the instant delete that made the hook combo so oppressive. The falloff range has also been reduced from 30–50 meters down to 20–35 meters, pushing Roadhog into closer combat to be effective. Combined with the Chain Hook pulling enemies in and the increased pull distance between Roadhog and the target after a hook (making instant follow-up shots harder to land), the one-shot kill potential still exists in certain situations but now requires more technique to execute.

    Roadhog’s Updated Perks

The Perk system has been tuned alongside the kit. Scrap Hook received a significant buff, now reloading four ammo on landing a successful hook instead of the previous two — rewarding successful hooks with meaningful resource return. The old Shrapnel Launcher Perk has been completely replaced by Here, Piggy, Piggy, which drastically reduces Scrap Hook cooldown while Whole Hog is active, allowing Roadhog to chain hooks rapidly during his ultimate for maximum chaos. Trash Compactor also gets its own Major Perk called Toxic Exhaust, which slows and damages enemies standing in front of Roadhog while the ability is active — turning the absorption window into an area denial tool as well. And the Hogdrogen Exposure Perk expands Take a Breather to also heal nearby allies while Roadhog uses it, giving him some genuine team sustain to justify his frontline presence beyond body-blocking and hooks.

    Why These Reworks Were Overdue

Sombra and Roadhog aren’t strangers to reworks. Sombra’s last major overhaul was in October 2024 with Season 13, about a year after a previous overhaul in October 2023. Roadhog has also seen numerous kit adjustments throughout Overwatch’s history. The problem has always been the same: targeted stat changes and partial tweaks weren’t enough to fix the fundamental design tension at the core of both heroes.

Sombra’s stealth and hacking identity consistently made her either unplayable or oppressively strong, with no comfortable middle ground. She was one of the most banned heroes in Competitive Play because her entire kit was built around disrupting enemies with limited counterplay. The move to Support is Blizzard acknowledging that the disruption and stealth toolset is actually perfect for a Support identity — it just needed healing output to justify its presence in a team composition.

Roadhog’s one-shot hook combo is a design problem that goes back to 2016. The hook is the hero’s identity, so removing it was never on the table. But the combination of the hook pulling enemies in and the raw burst damage of the Scrap Gun has always left the target with almost no window to react or escape. By splitting the Scrap Gun into two bursts, reducing falloff range, increasing pull distance, and introducing Trash Compactor as a team-utility tool, Blizzard is trying to reframe Roadhog as a space-creating Tank rather than a one-man execution squad. Doomfist went through something similar when Overwatch 2 launched, moving from a Damage hero to Tank — though that shift was arguably even more disruptive to his playstyle than what Roadhog is getting here.

This kind of major hero overhaul approach is exactly what keeps Overwatch’s roster feeling fresh after a decade of releases. For fans tracking other major gaming announcements around the same time, the Overwatch Season 5 launch on October 6 arrives in a stacked month — alongside Bethesda’s roadmap news for Fallout 5 and other big gaming drops like Blackwood’s Steam launch.

What Else Is Coming in Overwatch Season 5

The reworks aren’t the only thing arriving with Season 5 on October 6. New hero Doctrine — a vampire-inspired Support with a shape-shifting character model that transitions from a gaunt appearance into a sleeker form as combat progresses — will join the roster alongside the reworks. His primary weapon, the Eternal Scepter, simultaneously heals allies and damages enemies from a single attack, fitting the same backline-flexibility philosophy that shaped the Sombra and Roadhog changes.

Season 5 also includes a brand-new Escort map: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, set at a remote Icelandic volcano prison and tied directly to the ongoing Reign of Talon story arc. The map is the setting where Doomfist breaks Doctrine free from captivity, making it narratively significant rather than just another piece of geometry to push a payload through. Season 5 marks the conclusion of the year-long Act III: Reign of Talon storyline, and the next Overwatch Spotlight event — where Blizzard will reveal what comes next for the story and the game’s future — is confirmed for February 2027.

When Do the Reworks Go Live?

Both the Sombra and Roadhog reworks go live on October 6, 2026 with the start of Overwatch Season 5. Players who attended BlizzCon 2026 in person had hands-on time with both reworked heroes at the show floor. There is no PTR phase announced separately from the live launch — the builds shown at BlizzCon were the closest to public testing ahead of Season 5. If you’re a Sombra main who has invested in her skins and playstyle, you’ve got a few weeks to make peace with the new direction — or get genuinely excited about healing your team from the shadows. For Roadhog players, the fundamentals you know are still there. The hook is still the hook. Trash Compactor just makes you a better teammate when you use it. The real question is whether the community finally gets the balanced, enjoyable Roadhog experience they’ve been asking for since 2016.

The broader Overwatch roster continues to evolve fast, and Blizzard shows no signs of slowing down heading into what looks like one of the game’s most active seasons in years. Keep an eye on the Zelda Ocarina of Time remake coverage and Agefield High’s PS5 launch for more of what’s landing this fall, and check back for full Season 5 impressions once the reworks are live on October 6.
