Palworld 1.0 Hits Almost 1 Million Steam Players — Second Week Domination Explained

People said the Palworld hype was a one-time lightning strike. Turns out, lightning can hit the same spot twice. Pocketpair’s creature-collecting survival game officially left Early Access with version 1.0 on July 10, 2026, and the response has been genuinely staggering — nearly a million concurrent Steam players, Dota 2 knocked off the charts for the second weekend in a row, and a player count peak that puts the full release among Steam’s best numbers ever recorded.

Two and a half years after the Early Access launch that briefly broke Steam, Palworld is back. Here’s how the numbers break down and what brought everyone flooding back in.

The Player Count Numbers — What Actually Happened

Palworld’s 1.0 launch kicked off on July 10 and the player count started building fast. By the opening weekend, the game had surpassed 855,525 concurrent Steam players — the highest figure it’s seen since the very first weeks of Early Access in January 2024. That puts the version 1.0 peak among the top 15 highest concurrent player counts ever recorded on Steam, which is a list that takes some serious doing to get onto.

For context on how rare that is: only three games have ever hit more than two million concurrent players on Steam — PUBG, Black Myth: Wukong, and Palworld. Only five others have ever broken a million concurrents: Counter-Strike 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Lost Ark, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077.

The week-two picture is what’s really turning heads. For the second weekend in a row, Palworld has sat second on Steam’s most-played chart, topped only by Counter-Strike 2 and knocking Dota 2 down to third place — something that rarely happens to a game that’s been one of the platform’s permanent fixtures for over a decade.

Given that Palworld is also available on PS5 and is included in Xbox Game Pass, the total figure was likely over 1 million players if console users are taken into account.

    Where Was Palworld Before This?

To appreciate how big this comeback is, you need to know where the game was sitting before 1.0 dropped. In the two and a half years since its Early Access launch, the game had generally logged weekly concurrent peaks of between 25,000 and 50,000 players. It enjoyed some spikes in that time, briefly jumping above 200,000 when the Feybreak update was released in December 2024, and hitting around 122,000 when another major update arrived in June 2025.

Going from a floor of 25,000–50,000 weekly players to 855,000 concurrent is not a gradual uptick. That’s an enormous return of players who had either moved on or were simply waiting for the right moment — and version 1.0 was apparently that moment for a very large number of people.

Pocketpair also made a decision that almost certainly helped: they did not raise the price at 1.0 launch, which many studios do when leaving Early Access. Palworld continues at its $29.99 retail price, with a 30% Steam discount bringing it down to $20.99 until July 23. Keeping the game affordable for both new players and returning fans was a genuine goodwill call, and it likely drove a meaningful portion of that launch weekend traffic.

What Actually Comes in Palworld 1.0?

The version 1.0 update is enormous. Pocketpair describes it as essentially a new game — the official patch notes run roughly 27 pages. The 1.0 update is free for everyone who already owned the game during Early Access. Here’s everything that’s in it:

Two New Regions — Sunreach and the World Tree

The full release adds the floating islands of Sunreach, the World Tree, and seven smaller islands. Sunreach is a floating archipelago suspended above Palpagos by Paldium energy, with exclusive environments, civilizations, Tower Bosses, rare ores, and new Pals that can’t be found elsewhere.

The World Tree is the bigger story beat. The World Tree concludes the game’s central mystery and serves as the final major challenge of the 1.0 storyline — it’s what the entire game’s lore has been building toward since launch. Players who stuck through all of Early Access can finally get their answer to what’s been looming on the horizon since 2024.

72 New Pals — Roster Now at 287

A total of 72 Pals have been added, made up of 47 completely new Pals and 25 variants found across Sunreach, the World Tree, and other regions. That brings the total number of Pals up to 287. The new additions come with unique animations and passive skills, and many are tied specifically to the new endgame regions — giving players who’ve already caught everything from Early Access fresh targets to hunt.

Awakening and Mutation — New Ways to Power Up

Version 1.0 introduces Awakening, which allows players to strengthen their Pals using Radiant Gems found within the World Tree. Mutation adds another layer to breeding, with a low chance of producing a stronger Pal with higher stats and a unique passive skill. New cakes can also influence breeding by improving stat growth and mutation chances, producing two Pal Eggs at once or increasing the chance of inheriting multiple passive skills.

These two systems add proper endgame depth for dedicated players — Awakening gives you something to grind toward at the World Tree, and Mutation keeps breeding interesting well past the point where you’ve filled out your team.

Level Cap Raised to 80 and Combat Reworked

The level cap has been raised from 65 to 80. More than 200 Partner Skills have also been reworked, opening up more ways to build teams around combat, exploration, gathering, fishing, and base management. Tower Bosses have been revamped, 13 new weapons are in, and there’s a new wave-based raid system for players who want structured challenge content beyond open-world exploration.

Other additions include aquatic base building, in-game voice chat, the Wing Pack glider, ancient ruins scattered across the world with exploration minigames, and a completely reworked main story that connects all the major regions and bosses into a proper narrative throughline rather than the disconnected objective structure from Early Access.

The Nintendo Lawsuit — Where Things Stand

The legal situation between Pocketpair and Nintendo remains ongoing and is worth knowing about heading into the full release. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed suit in September 2024 over infringement of multiple patents — specifically three patents targeting game mechanics in Palworld. The lawsuit is seeking an injunction, damages, and legal fees.

In response, Pocketpair removed the ability to summon creatures by throwing Poké Ball-style Pal Spheres as part of a December 2024 update. That mechanic change was made specifically to address one of the patent claims, though the case itself is still working through Japanese courts. The full release launching without any further forced changes suggests Pocketpair believes it has addressed the most immediate legal pressure points — but the lawsuit isn’t resolved.

None of this appears to have dampened player enthusiasm. If anything, the controversy kept Palworld in the conversation throughout a two-and-a-half-year Early Access period that could otherwise have faded from public memory.

What Are Players Saying About 1.0?

Palworld currently holds a 96% positive Steam review rating on its 1.0 launch day, with the general sentiment being that the full release is the version the game always should have been. Returning players are praising the reworked story structure and the new regions, while new players are finding a tighter, more polished experience than Early Access offered. The main criticisms point to performance on lower-end hardware, some balancing issues with the new endgame content, and the same server capacity complaints that any massive launch tends to generate in its first few days.

Pocketpair’s head of publishing, John ‘Bucky’ Buckley, celebrated the numbers with a characteristically self-aware response: “I promise I’ll try not to just be posting Steam numbers every day but… really, thank you so much, gamers.”

Palworld has now reached 40 million total players across all platforms.
