Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are officially confirmed for Pokemon GO’s biggest annual event, but a pair of leaks shared to the TheSilphRoad subreddit have revealed two very important numbers that every trainer needs to know before they start planning their raid strategy. The energy cost is steep, the CP numbers are record-breaking, and the way GO Fest structures the debut is genuinely smart. Here’s the full breakdown.
The Two Big Leaked Numbers — Energy and CP
The leaks surfaced on the TheSilphRoad subreddit and detail both the Mega Energy requirements and the base stat totals for both forms. Let’s start with the numbers that matter most:

GO Fest 2026 Is the Only Way to Get the Energy — For Now
Here’s the important logistical detail. Mega Mewtwo Energy — both X and Y variants, which are separate resources — will be available exclusively through Super Mega Raids during GO Fest 2026. Super Mega Raids are a brand new format introduced this year that can accommodate over 1,000 trainers simultaneously, which is clearly the infrastructure Niantic built specifically for this debut.
The event structure breaks down as follows:
- In-person GO Fest events kick off on May 29 in Tokyo, with Chicago and Copenhagen to follow. City Experience ticket holders can access branching Timed Research awarding an encounter with either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y, complete with the first Mega Level already unlocked. Park Session attendees can battle Mega Mewtwo at the end of their park experience.
- GO Fest Global runs on July 11 and 12, and this is where the majority of trainers worldwide will get their shot. Mega Mewtwo X appears in Super Mega Raids on Saturday, while Mega Mewtwo Y shows up on Sunday. Event Timed Research will also award some Mega Energy on top of raid participation.
- GO Fest Global is completely free this year — no ticket purchase required to participate. Every trainer who logs in during the event weekend can access the Special Research storyline, increased Shiny rates, and of course the Super Mega Raids.
The critical bonus to know: every Mega Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Raids will have at least one Mega Level already unlocked, meaning you can Mega Evolve it immediately after catching it without needing to grind the full 7,500 energy first. If you’re lucky, it might even come at Mega Level 2 or 3. This is clearly Niantic’s way of making the steep energy barrier feel less punishing at launch while still making the full grind meaningful for trainers who want to push their Mewtwo to higher Mega Levels over time.
How This Changes the Mega Energy System Going Forward
Mega Mewtwo’s debut is also reshaping how Pokemon GO handles Pokemon with two Mega forms. Up until a May 18 update, Mega Charizard X and Y shared a single pool of Mega Energy — players could choose which form to evolve into when spending it. That update officially split Charizard’s Mega Energy into two separate pools, with players receiving an equal amount of each to compensate for the change.
Mega Mewtwo is launching with this split system from day one — X Energy and Y Energy are two entirely separate resources from the start. But the tradeoff is that maximising Y’s flexibility across different raid matchups means repeatedly spending Charged TMs and potentially Elite Charged TMs for legacy moves like Psystrike or Shadow Ball. If you have the resources to support it, Y is the long-term investment.
Mega Mewtwo X is the more immediately practical pick. Fighting and Psychic coverage on a single moveset, a solid 339 ATK that still puts it among the best attackers in the game, and a simpler usage pattern that doesn’t require constant TM management. If you’re playing both days of GO Fest Global you can potentially get encounters with both — X on Saturday, Y on Sunday — so the better question for most trainers is just which one to prioritise powering up first.
Either way, GO Fest 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most significant events in the game’s ten-year history. The free Global format removes the biggest barrier to participation, and Mega Mewtwo is the most anticipated Mega Evolution the game has ever added.
