Saros: How to Open Locked Containers (Carcosan Keys)
TL;DR
- Yellow containers in Saros are locked and require a Carcosan Key to open.
- Keys drop randomly from white containers and occasionally from enemies.
- Each key is one-time use — spend them wisely.
- Keys do not carry over on death unless you unlock Armor Matrix nodes for starting keys.
- There are 5 Armor Matrix nodes that give you 1 key each at the start of every run.
- Locked side-path doors are usually a better use of keys than yellow containers.
- Blazing Strike — a late-game ability — lets you smash yellow containers without a key.
What Are Locked Containers in Saros?
As you explore the biomes of Carcosa in Saros, you will come across three types of containers. White containers open freely and are your most common source of loot. Red containers offer you a choice between two items. And yellow containers are locked. You cannot open them without the right resource.
Yellow containers are the most valuable ones. They are specifically coded to drop a Power Weapon of a higher proficiency level than whatever you currently have equipped. That makes them a tempting target — but the lock is there for a reason. The game wants you to think carefully before spending the resource required to open them.

What Is a Carcosan Key?
A Carcosan Key is the item you need to open locked yellow containers and locked side-path doors. Each key is one-time use. You spend it, the container or door opens, and the key is gone. You will need to find more throughout the run if you want to keep opening locked content.
You can carry multiple Carcosan Keys at the same time. But here is the catch — keys do not survive death. Any keys you picked up during a run are lost when you die and return to the Passage. The only exception is if you have unlocked permanent starting-key nodes in the Armor Matrix, which are discussed below.
How to Get Carcosan Keys in Saros
From White Containers
The main way to find Carcosan Keys during a run is by opening standard white containers scattered across the biome. Keys can drop from these, but it is a rare drop — not a guaranteed one. You will not see a key in every white container you open. Some runs you will find two or three keys early. Others you may go most of a biome without finding a single one.
From Enemies
Enemies also have a small chance of dropping a Carcosan Key when killed. This is uncommon and unreliable, so do not plan your run around it. But it does happen. Clearing rooms fully rather than running past enemies increases your odds of stumbling across one.
From the Armor Matrix (Permanent Starting Keys)
This is the most reliable method in the long run. The Armor Matrix — Saros’s permanent skill tree accessed through Primary in the Passage — has five specific nodes that each grant you a Carcosan Key at the start of every cycle. These nodes cost Lucenite to unlock.
Once you unlock all five, every single run begins with five keys already in your inventory. No RNG, no hunting through containers hoping for a drop. You simply start each run with five ready to spend. This completely changes how you approach locked content and is one of the strongest long-term investments in the game. Prioritize these Lucenite nodes early — they pay off immediately and in every run that follows.

How to Use a Carcosan Key
Using a key is simple. When you approach a locked yellow container or a locked side-path door, hold Triangle to interact with it. As long as you have a Carcosan Key in your inventory, it will open. The key is consumed immediately and the container or door unlocks.
To avoid missing locked doors during a run, keep an eye on your minimap. Grey icons on the minimap can indicate either a room blocked by a red shield — which you can punch through with a melee strike — or a locked door. Checking the map regularly stops you from running past content without realizing it.
Yellow Containers vs. Locked Side-Path Doors — Where Should You Spend Keys?
This is the most important decision tied to Carcosan Keys. You have two valid targets and often not enough keys to open everything.
Yellow Containers
Opening a yellow container gives you a Power Weapon at a higher proficiency level than what you currently have equipped. If your current Power Weapon is already close to the biome’s proficiency ceiling, the upgrade inside the container may only be a marginal improvement. Red containers can also drop Power Weapons, which means yellow containers are not your only option for getting better weapons during a run.
The recommendation is to open yellow containers with a key only when you genuinely need a weapon upgrade — ideally when the proficiency difference is meaningful, such as at least 5 levels above your current weapon.
Locked Side-Path Doors
Locked side-path doors often contain a large amount of Aether — the healing resource — plus several additional containers to loot. The total value of a full side room frequently outweighs the benefit of a single weapon upgrade, especially later in a biome when your health matters more than marginal damage gains. Saving keys for these doors is the generally recommended approach when keys are limited.
The simple rule: if you are low on health or have not found much Aether in a run, spend the key on a locked door. If you are healthy and your current Power Weapon is noticeably underleveled, spend it on a yellow container.
What Happens to Keys When You Die?
Any Carcosan Keys you collected during a run are lost on death. They are not permanent resources like Halcyon or Lucenite. You return to the Passage empty-handed in terms of keys. This is exactly why the Armor Matrix starting-key nodes are so valuable. The five starting keys they provide are the only keys that are guaranteed at the beginning of every cycle, regardless of what happened in previous runs.
Until you unlock those nodes, key management during a run is critical. Never assume you will find another key after spending one.
Can You Open Yellow Containers Without a Key?
Yes — but only later in the game. Once you reach the final biome, Arjun automatically gains an ability called Blazing Strike. This is a permanent upgrade and the last major ability unlocked in the entire game. With Blazing Strike active, you can smash yellow containers open with a single melee hit by tapping R1, no key required.
Blazing Strike also breaks yellow barrier walls throughout the biomes — the force field walls that your standard melee attack cannot touch in the early game. Once you have it, you can revisit earlier biomes using the World Dial and clear every yellow barrier room you skipped during your first pass. Those rooms contain artifacts, weapons, and collectibles worth going back for.
After unlocking Blazing Strike, yellow containers no longer need keys at all. This lets you save every Carcosan Key exclusively for locked side-path doors during your runs, making key management much less stressful in the late game.
Key Tips for Managing Carcosan Keys
- Do not backtrack for yellow containers you missed. Most biomes in Saros do not allow the same kind of backtracking as Returnal. If you passed a yellow container without a key, move forward. You are unlikely to get back to it.
- Unlock the five Armor Matrix key nodes as early as possible. Five guaranteed keys per run removes the RNG entirely and lets you plan every cycle with confidence.
- Prioritize locked doors when health is low. The Aether and additional loot from a side room have more value than a marginal weapon upgrade when you are barely surviving.
- Open yellow containers when the proficiency gap is large. A key spent on a weapon only one or two levels above yours is usually a waste. Wait until the difference is significant.
- Remember that red containers can also drop Power Weapons. You are not locked out of weapon upgrades just because you skipped a yellow container. Keep opening red containers and you may find the upgrade anyway.
Carcosan Keys and the Armor Matrix Connection
Keys tie directly into how you manage your permanent progression in Saros. The Armor Matrix key nodes cost Lucenite — the same resource used to unlock most of the skill tree. Spending Lucenite on those five key nodes early is one of the best decisions you can make for long-term run quality.
To understand the full picture of how Lucenite and Halcyon work across the Armor Matrix, take a look at our guide on what to do with Halcyon and Primary upgrades in Saros. The two resources work hand in hand, and knowing how to balance spending between them makes a real difference.
Does Opening Every Yellow Container Matter for Trophies?
Not directly — there is no trophy specifically tied to opening a certain number of yellow containers. But efficient key use helps you progress faster, which supports other trophy milestones. If you are working toward 100% completion, check the Saros complete trophy guide to see how locked containers and key management fit into your overall trophy plan.
Ending With
Carcosan Keys in Saros are scarce on purpose. The game wants you to weigh short-term firepower against long-term survival every time you find one. The system is frustrating at first — especially before you understand that you can guarantee keys through the Armor Matrix. Once those five permanent nodes are unlocked, the pressure eases considerably.
Until then, prioritize locked doors over yellow containers when keys are tight, always check the minimap for locked rooms you might miss, and push toward unlocking Blazing Strike as the permanent long-term solution. Pick up Saros on PS5 and start putting those keys to good use from your very first run.
