TL;DR
- The Collector Leviathan is a giant squid found east of the Lifepod in the Graveyard and Sparse Plains biomes.
- It lives about 700 meters east of your starting point, in warm, trench-like waters near the Tadpole Pens.
- There are two Collector Leviathans in the current build — one above the Karakorum Metal Farms and one in the Sparse Plains trench.
- It fires an EMP pulse before attacking. Do not wait for it to get close before you move.
- You need the Tadpole to survive this area. Do not go without it.
- Use Distraction Flares and a fully upgraded Seaglide or Tadpole to escape.
- Scanning it unlocks the Sonic Echo Biomod — worth the effort if done safely.
The Collector Leviathan Location in Subnautica 2 is one of the most searched topics for a reason. This giant squid is the first major Leviathan most players run into, and it often ends their run without warning. If you are heading east toward the Alien Ruins or the Tadpole Pens, you are heading right into its territory. This guide tells you exactly where to find it, what it does, how to avoid it, and how to scan it safely.

What Is the Collector Leviathan?
The Collector is a massive cephalopod predator — basically a giant armored squid. Its scientific name in the PDA is Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus, which loosely translates to “tyrant squid of frightening curiosity.” That name fits perfectly.
Here is what makes it different from other large creatures in the game:
- It has 1,000 HP and swims at up to 5.0 m/s.
- It has four long hunting tentacles tipped with bioglass claws, eight arms grouped around a massive beak, and a mantle covered in armored plating.
- It has three hearts — two that pump blood from its gills and one main heart. This makes it incredibly resilient.
- It targets Players, Tadpoles, and Pearl Stashes. So it is not just after you — it will also attack your vehicle.
- It is solitary and intelligent. It does not hunt on pure instinct like a pack predator. It observes before it strikes.
You can learn about other dangerous creatures in our guide to dealing with hostile creatures in Subnautica 2.

Collector Leviathan Location in Subnautica 2
There are two Collector Leviathans in the current Early Access build of the game.
- Collector #1 — Patrols the open water above the Karakorum Metal Farms, east of the Lifepod.
- Collector #2 — Lives in the trench inside the Sparse Plains biome.

The first one is almost certainly the one you will encounter naturally during the story. It patrols the gorges and trenches east of your starting Lifepod, in the area between major landmarks including the Alien Ruins. The warm water in this area is heated by underwater thermal vents, and you will find resources like Salt and Sulfur nearby.
The easiest way to know you are in the right area: use the Tadpole Pens signal as your landmark. The building where the Tadpole Pens investigation takes place hangs almost directly over the trench where the squid patrols. The creature is roughly 700 meters east of your starting point.
When you receive the mission from NOA to “Investigate Tadpole Pens,” that is your signal that it is time to head east — and time to be careful.
How to Get to the Collector Leviathan Safely

Here is the step-by-step route:
- Start at your Lifepod and head directly east.
- Stay shallow at first — closer to the surface rather than diving to the bottom.
- At around 950 meters east, the water will begin to turn murky and darker.
- Dive to about 50 meters depth at this point.
- Scan the water from the north across to the east. Look for a giant squid with glowing purple markings.
The water in this area is extremely hot due to thermal vents. Make sure you have the Heat Tolerance Trait before going deep in this zone.
Also make sure you have enough oxygen for extended exploration. See our guide on how to increase oxygen in Subnautica 2.
Do Not Go Without the Tadpole
This cannot be stressed enough: do not approach Collector Leviathan territory without the Tadpole submersible.
The Collector moves at up to 5.0 m/s. Without a vehicle, you have almost no chance of outrunning it. The Tadpole gives you speed, and critically, it also works as a distraction — the creature will continue to attack an unmanned Tadpole even after you exit it.
Learn how to build the Tadpole in Subnautica 2 before making the trip. If you want extra depth capability for the trench, also check out the Tadpole Depth Module guide.
Collector Leviathan Attack Pattern
Knowing how the Collector attacks is the key to surviving it. Here is what happens:
- Step 1 — EMP Pulse: The Collector emits a powerful electromagnetic pulse before it grabs. This is your warning. Do not wait for visual contact — move the moment you see or hear the pulse.
- Step 2 — Grab: It lunges and grabs you or your Tadpole at high speed. If it grabs the Tadpole, it will destroy the vehicle. If it grabs you outside the vehicle, it is a very quick death.
- Step 3 — Attack Loop: It will continue attacking your empty Tadpole even after you exit. Use this to your advantage when scanning.
The creature becomes alert at a certain distance and angle. Moving slowly and from above gives you more time to react before it locks onto you.
How to Escape the Collector Leviathan

Your best escape tools are:
- Distraction Flares: Throw one away from your escape path. The Collector will chase the flare, giving you a window to swim out of its territory.
- Fully Upgraded Seaglide: A maxed-out Seaglide can outpace the Collector, letting you flee its patrol zone even on foot.
- Fully Upgraded Tadpole: With the right chassis upgrades like the Scout Ray Chassis, you can boost your speed and turning rate enough to escape.
- Swim straight out of its territory: Leviathans stop pursuing you when you leave their patrol zone. Swim directly away — do not move laterally across its area, as that keeps you in range longer.
- Swim up to the surface: If things get desperate, swimming straight up toward the surface or crossing into another biome boundary drops the creature’s aggro.
Do not re-enter its territory with a full inventory of rare materials. The risk is not worth it. Plan your trips and leave a clear exit route before you enter.

How to Scan the Collector Leviathan
Scanning the Collector gives you one of the best early rewards in the game — it unlocks the Sonic Echo Biomod. It is worth doing, but you need to be smart about it.
Here is the safest method:
- Ride your Tadpole into the Collector’s territory.
- Let it attack and grab your Tadpole.
- Exit your Tadpole while it is locked in the grab animation.
- Have your Bioscanner ready in a quick-access Tool slot.
- Hold the Scanner on the creature for 4 seconds to unlock its full PDA dossier.
- Swim away immediately after the scan completes.
An alternative method: use the Camouflage Biomod. As long as the Collector is not already mid-attack, activating the camouflage and staying still will cause it to lose interest. You can then scan it while it is distracted. Check out the full Biomods guide to see what is available and how to get them.
You can also approach from east, staying at a slightly higher depth band. Once the creature grabs you, use the downward dive as your escape vector after the scan completes. Over time you will learn the exact range where it becomes alert, making future trips much smoother.
Collector Leviathan in Co-Op
If you are playing with friends, the Collector creates a split-decision problem. One player spots it; the other is 80 meters away focused on something else. Before going in, communicate clearly — tell your teammates you are approaching the Collector for a scan.
When escaping in co-op, both players should move away from the territory independently. Do not try to regroup inside the active aggro zone. Pick a meeting point outside the territory boundary and reach it separately.
For the full co-op experience, see our Subnautica 2 multiplayer co-op guide.
All Leviathans in Subnautica 2
The Collector is the most infamous, but it is not the only Leviathan on Proteus. Here is a quick overview of what else is out there in the current Early Access build:
- Collector Leviathan — Giant squid, east of the Lifepod, Graveyard and Sparse Plains. The one this guide covers.
- Shiver Leviathan — Hunts in packs. A large female leads three smaller males. Extremely dangerous in open water.
- Great Jaw (Clam Leviathan) — A massive stationary mollusc southwest of the Lifepod near the Cicada Wreck. It waits for prey to trigger its tendrils. See our Clam Leviathan location guide for details.
- Deepwing Brooder — A docile Leviathan that travels in packs at higher elevations. It will not attack you.
- World Tree — A mysterious, massive lifeform. Not a typical predator.
Tips Before You Go Near the Collector
- Do not enter its territory carrying rare materials. If you die, you risk losing them. Know what happens when you die in Subnautica 2.
- Have at least a couple of Distraction Flares in your inventory.
- Know your exit before you go in. Mark it mentally or with a beacon.
- Bring enough oxygen. The trench exploration takes time.
- Keep your inventory light. If the encounter goes badly, you want to be fast.
- If you are not ready for the Collector, focus on best early upgrades first and come back when you are better equipped.
Ending Note
The Collector Leviathan Location in Subnautica 2 is roughly 700 meters east of your Lifepod, in the heated trenches of the Graveyard and Sparse Plains biomes. It is the first major threat most players face and arguably the most dangerous jump scare in the early game. But once you understand its attack pattern, you can survive every encounter and even scan it safely for the Sonic Echo Biomod.
Build the Tadpole. Bring flares. Know your exit. Do not rush. That is all there is to it.
