TL;DR
- Strong Acid cannot be made in the basic Fabricator. You need a Processor built in a powered base.
- The fastest recipe is 2x Necrolei Cysts in the Processor — takes 30 seconds per batch.
- There is an alternate recipe: 1x Gold + 1x Sulfur — takes 60 seconds but uses more valuable materials.
- Scan the Processor blueprint at the Old Habitat, roughly 350 to 400 meters north of the Lifepod.
- Necrolei Cysts grow on Stilt Orbs — found in the jellyfish forest area near the Old Habitat.
- Strong Acid is used to craft the Power Cell, Fiber Mesh, Advanced Battery, Entangled Power Cell, and Dedicated Core.
- Stock at least 4 to 6 units before any major build session — it is a mid-game progression bottleneck.
Subnautica 2 Strong Acid is one of the first refined materials that stops you in your tracks if you are not prepared. Unlike basic resources you find lying around, Strong Acid requires a dedicated machine, specific ingredients, and a trip beyond the starting area. It is needed for the Power Cell that powers the Tadpole submarine, making it a key step in your mid-game progression. This guide tells you exactly how to get it, where to find everything you need, and how to keep a steady supply going.
Before you make this trip, make sure you have already learned how to unlock blueprints and crafting recipes in Subnautica 2, as scanning is central to the whole process.
What Is Strong Acid Used For in Subnautica 2?
Before going out to gather materials, it helps to know why you need Strong Acid and how much of it you will need over time. This is not a one-off crafting ingredient — it comes up repeatedly as you push into the mid and late game.
Here is every item that requires Strong Acid:
- Power Cell — Essential for building and running the Tadpole submarine.
- Fiber Mesh — Used in advanced equipment including the Rebreather. You need two bottles of Strong Acid for this, which means four Necrolei Cysts minimum.
- Advanced Battery — Requires 1x Conduit Crystal, 1x Strong Acid, and 1x Silver Ingot.
- Entangled Power Cell — A higher-tier power component for advanced builds.
- Dedicated Core — Requires 1x Advanced Wiring Kit, 2x Quartz, and 1x Strong Acid.
Most recipes that call for Strong Acid only need one bottle each, so two Necrolei Cysts covers you for each craft. The exception is the Rebreather, which needs two bottles. Plan your Cyst gathering around what you intend to build first.
To power your base efficiently while you run the Processor, see our guide on how to add power to your base in Subnautica 2.
Step 1 — Unlock and Build the Processor

Strong Acid can only be made in a Processor. This is a base module, not a portable tool, so you need a working base with power before you can craft anything.
To unlock the Processor blueprint, you need to scan one in the world. The easiest place to find one is the Old Habitat, located roughly 350 to 400 meters north of the Lifepod. This is also where you will find the Sonic Resonator and Scanner Station blueprints, so the trip is very efficient.
NOA will eventually send you to the Old Habitat as part of the main story to track down a Blackbox signal. If you have not received that mission yet, you can still head there manually — just go north and look for the colony ruins.
Once you have scanned the Processor, return to your base, build it using Titanium, Copper Wire, and Mild Acid, and make sure it is connected to a power source. You can get Mild Acid from Acidic Raion organisms found all around the starting area — it is much easier to obtain than Strong Acid.
If you have not set up your base yet, our guide on how to unlock the Habitat Builder and start building a base will get you started. Also check out what to build in your base first so the Processor fits into a smart early build order.
Step 2 — Find Necrolei Cysts (Primary Recipe)

The fastest and most efficient recipe for Strong Acid is 2x Necrolei Cysts processed in 30 seconds. This is the method you should use first and stick with throughout most of your playthrough.
What Are Necrolei Cysts?
Necrolei Cysts are round, green plant-like organisms that grow attached to a creature called a Stilt Orb. Stilt Orbs look like small floating plants with root-like legs. The Cysts themselves appear as green, round growths sitting on the creature, almost like they are floating on their roots.
You harvest them using the Survival Multitool. Do not go without it or you will not be able to collect them.
Where to Find Necrolei Cysts
Stilt Orbs — and therefore Necrolei Cysts — are found in the jellyfish forest area near the Old Habitat, approximately 250 to 350 meters north of the Lifepod. They grow around green and purple anemones in this zone. This is a relatively safe area compared to other biomes, making it a reliable farming spot you can return to regularly.
Since you are already heading north to scan the Processor blueprint, collect as many Necrolei Cysts as you can carry on the same trip. Grab at least four on your first run if you need the Rebreather — or more if you plan to build the Power Cell and other electronics shortly after.
How to Craft Strong Acid with Necrolei Cysts

- Open your Processor at your base.
- Go to the Refinement section of the recipe list.
- Select Strong Acid and load in 2x Necrolei Cysts.
- You can queue multiple batches by pressing Load Processor repeatedly if you have enough Cysts in your inventory.
- Wait 30 seconds per batch.
- Collect your Strong Acid from the Open Processor Output slot on the right side of the machine.
That is all there is to it. Queueing multiple batches is the fastest way to build a stockpile before a major crafting session.
Step 3 — Alternate Recipe: Gold and Sulfur

There is a second recipe for Strong Acid that uses 1x Gold + 1x Sulfur. This is found under the Alternate Recipes tab inside the Processor, and it unlocks automatically once you have scanned and discovered both Gold and Sulfur in the wild.
Here is what you need to know about this route:
- It takes 60 seconds per batch — double the time of the Necrolei Cyst method.
- Both Gold and Sulfur are found in the heated thermal vent areas east of the Lifepod, in the Graveyard region.
- Reaching these zones requires the Heat Tolerance Trait — so this is not an early-game option.
- Gold is a high-demand material used in advanced wiring kits and other late-game components. Spending it on Strong Acid is not ideal unless Necrolei Cysts are genuinely unavailable.
The bottom line: use the Necrolei Cyst route as your primary method. The Gold and Sulfur alternate recipe is good to have as a backup, but save those materials for other crafting needs. You can find out where to get Gold in Subnautica 2 and how to get Sulfur when you are ready to explore those areas.
Strong Acid vs Mild Acid — What Is the Difference?
New players sometimes confuse the two. They are completely separate materials with different recipes and different uses.
- Mild Acid — Made in the basic Fabricator from Acidic Raion organisms. Easy to get from the start. Used for early crafting including the Processor itself.
- Strong Acid — Requires the Processor. Made from Necrolei Cysts or Gold and Sulfur. Used for mid-game electronics and vehicle components.
You cannot substitute one for the other. If a recipe calls for Strong Acid, Mild Acid will not work. Make sure you are checking the recipe requirements carefully before you start gathering materials.
Tips for Farming Strong Acid Efficiently
- Do the full north trip in one run. Scan the Processor at the Old Habitat and harvest Necrolei Cysts at the same time. Going back twice wastes oxygen and time.
- Always bring the Survival Multitool. You cannot harvest Cysts without it.
- Collect more than you need. Grab at least six to eight Cysts per trip so you always have a buffer. Strong Acid demand goes up fast.
- Queue batches in the Processor. If you have ten Cysts, load them all and let the machine run while you do other things around your base.
- Keep a stockpile of four to six bottles. Strong Acid is needed for multiple important crafts that often come up close together in progression. Running out in the middle of a build session is a common mistake.
- Do not blow your Gold on Strong Acid early. Gold has important uses in later electronics. Use the Necrolei Cyst recipe first.
Managing your inventory well makes gathering runs much more productive. See our guide on how to increase inventory space in Subnautica 2 so you can carry more on each trip.
What to Build With Strong Acid First
The single most important use of Strong Acid in the early-to-mid game is the Power Cell. Without it, you cannot build and run the Tadpole submarine — and without the Tadpole, large parts of Proteus remain out of reach. Our guide on how to build the Tadpole in Subnautica 2 walks through the full process.
After the Power Cell, the next priority for most players is the Advanced Battery. This powers your high-tier tools and base equipment and is needed for deeper crafting chains. You will also need Conduit Crystals and Silver for that recipe.
If you are focused on following the best progression path overall, see our best early upgrades and progression path guide to make sure you are not skipping key steps.
Strong Acid is also needed to get the Necrolei Cyst and Strong Acid crafting chain fully optimised — worth bookmarking as a reference once you are deep into your build progression.
Final Thoughts
Strong Acid in Subnautica 2 is straightforward once you know the route. Head north to the Old Habitat, scan the Processor blueprint, grab Necrolei Cysts from Stilt Orbs in the jellyfish forest, and process them back at your base. Two Cysts per bottle, 30 seconds per batch, and you are done. Keep a steady stockpile and this material will never hold you back.
