    sonic resonator requirements subnuatica 2

    TL;DR

    • Large resource nodes say “unknown tool required” — you need the Sonic Resonator to break them.
    • Scan 2 broken Sonic Resonator fragments to unlock the blueprint. Best spots: Old Habitat (~370 meters north) or Welcome Home POI (~375 meters north).
    • Craft the Sonic Resonator at a base Fabricator using 1 Basic Battery, 2 Titanium Ingots, 2 Lead, and 1 Wiring Kit.
    • To mine a large node: equip, aim, hold right-click to charge, release when the reticle closes.
    • Bloom Biofilm blocks cave entrances and colony ruins. The Sonic Resonator destroys it with a fully charged blast.
    • Bloom Infestations have two Bloom Nodes each — destroy all white buds to clear them. The Bloom fish die when every bud in an area is destroyed.
    • Clearing Bloom Infestations unlocks Angel Combs and critical Adaptations for game progression.

If you have spent any time exploring the ocean in Subnautica 2, you have almost certainly run into two things that stop you dead in your tracks: large ore veins that say “unknown tool required” and white web-like growths blocking doorways and cave entrances. Both of these blockers have the same solution — the Sonic Resonator.

This guide covers everything: what the Sonic Resonator does, where to find its fragments, how to craft it, how to use it for mining, and how to use it to clear all forms of Bloom. Before diving in, check our Subnautica 2 beginner tips guide if you have not yet covered the basics.

    What Is the Sonic Resonator?

The Sonic Resonator is a mid-game tool that fires a charged sonic pulse. It is described in-game as a modified propulsion cannon chassis carrying a phased-array sonar — essentially a deep-sea jackhammer that uses sound waves instead of brute force.

    It has two major uses:

    • Mining large resource nodes — Ore veins and crystal deposits too big to break by hand. The Sonic Resonator shatters them and auto-collects the pieces.
    • Destroying Bloom — Bloom Biofilm blocking cave entrances, Bloom Cankers in Infestation zones, Bloom Sap on oxygen pockets, and Bloom Parasites on infected creatures.

Without it, you will hit hard walls in both resource gathering and story progression. Getting it early changes the game significantly.

The Three Sizes of Resource Nodes

Before looking at how to mine large nodes, it helps to understand how the resource node system works:

    • Small nodes — Picked up by hand. Give 1 unit of the resource.
    • Medium nodes — Smashed with any tool, including your Scanner. Give 2 units.
    • Large nodes — Cannot be broken by hand or basic tools. Require the Sonic Resonator or Feedback Resonator. Give 1 to 5 units depending on the resource type.

Large nodes are by far the most efficient way to farm Titanium, Silver, Lead, Quartz, Copper, and other key resources once you have the right tool. The jump in yield from small to large nodes is significant — especially when you are building a base and crafting complex equipment that needs large quantities of materials at once.

Step 1: Unlock the Sonic Resonator Blueprint

Like most tools in Subnautica 2, the Sonic Resonator blueprint is unlocked by scanning two broken versions of the tool found out in the world. There are more than two scattered around the map, so normal exploration will often turn them up. But if you want the fastest route, here are the confirmed locations.

Location 1 — Old Habitat Colony Ruins (~370 Meters North)

The Old Habitat ruins are one of the first major points of interest north of the Lifepod. NOA points you here during the early mission to find Quaker’s Blackbox. When you arrive:

    • Enter through the door of the Old Habitat building.
    • First fragment: Directly to your right as you walk in the entrance.
    • Second fragment: Directly ahead of you after entering, next to a toppled table.

Both fragments are in the same building. One trip gives you both scans needed. This is the fastest and most efficient location to unlock the blueprint.

Location 2 — Cave Near the Lifepod (345° North)

There is a broken Sonic Resonator on a desk inside a small cave just a few meters from the Lifepod, heading at roughly 345 degrees north. This is one of the earliest fragment locations you can reach — useful if you explore in that direction before heading to the Old Habitat.

Location 3 — Spider Dome / Wander Blackbox Area (~240 Meters Southwest)

Head approximately 240 degrees southwest of the Lifepod and look for a giant coral dome that resembles a spider — this is the Spider Dome. There is an overturned crate just behind Wander’s Blackbox at this location. The Sonic Resonator fragment is inside the crate.

Location 4 — Welcome Home POI (~375 Meters North)

The Welcome Home point of interest sits roughly 375 meters north of the Lifepod. Inside, you will find two Sonic Resonators to scan:

    • One on a shelf to the right just inside the entrance.
    • Another in the following room, on the floor to the left.

Like the Old Habitat, this location gives you both scans in a single visit.

Once you have scanned two fragments, the Sonic Resonator recipe automatically unlocks in your Fabricator. You do not need to do anything extra — just head back and craft it.

Step 2: Gather the Crafting Materials

The Sonic Resonator is a mid-game tool with a more demanding recipe than early tools. Here is what you need:

    • Basic Battery x1 — Craft at the Fabricator using 2 Copper Ore and 1 Acidic Raion Pouch. See our guide on how to get the Acidic Raion Pouch.
    • Titanium Ingot x2 — Processed at the Processor using 3 raw Titanium each (6 total). You need a base with a Processor built inside. See our guide on how to get Titanium and craft Ingots.
    • Lead x2 — Small Lead chunks can be found in a ravine approximately 250 meters northeast of the Lifepod. Look for purple shards on the ocean floor.
    • Wiring Kit x1 — Craft at the Fabricator using 1 Silver and 1 Copper Wire. See our guide on where to find Silver for the key ingredient.

The Titanium Ingots are usually the biggest hurdle for new players. You cannot craft them at the basic Lifepod Fabricator. You need a base Fabricator connected to a Processor. If you have not set up a base yet, our guide on how to unlock the Habitat Builder walks you through that step.

Important: The Sonic Resonator must also be crafted at a base Fabricator, not the basic one inside the Lifepod. Make sure your base has power before trying to craft it.

Step 3: How to Use the Sonic Resonator to Mine Large Nodes

Once crafted, drag the Sonic Resonator to your hotbar. Here is how to use it for mining:

    1. Equip the Sonic Resonator from your hotbar.
    2. Swim up close to a large resource node. Valid targets trigger an icon on your HUD telling you the Sonic Resonator is needed.
    3. Aim at the node and hold right-click (or RT on controller) to charge a sonic pulse.
    4. Watch the reticle on your screen. Two meters fill up on either side as you charge.
    5. Release when the reticle closes — this is the key timing. Against solid crystalline objects, release at the right moment to shatter the node cleanly.
    6. The node breaks apart and the resource pieces are automatically collected, as long as you have inventory space available.

One large node can give anywhere from 1 to 5 units of the resource. That is a massive improvement over hand-picking single small nodes one at a time. Once you start mining large nodes regularly, your resource supply stops being a problem.

Battery management: The Sonic Resonator runs on battery power. Each charged shot drains it. Bring spare Basic Batteries on long mining runs so you do not end up stuck with a dead tool deep in a cave. Build a Battery Terminal at your base for easy swapping between trips.

    Best Large Resource Node Locations

Now that you can use the Sonic Resonator, here are the best spots to put it to work:

Titanium — Camp One Tunnel (~300 Meters Northeast)

Look for the large water current flowing into a tunnel near Camp One. The entire corridor is packed with large Titanium deposits. The area above also has large Quartz deposits, making it one of the best dual-resource runs in the early game. See our full Titanium farming guide for more locations.

Silver — Stalagmite Area (~200 Meters Southeast)

Large Silver Outcrops are found near the stalagmites rising from the ocean floor southeast of the Lifepod. Chap’s Blackbox Signal is nearby, so you will recognise the area. One Outcrop typically gives 5 to 6 Silver. See our Silver guide for more detail.

Blackbox Wander Cave — Multiple Large Titanium Deposits

This cave is locked behind Bloom Biofilm until you clear it with the Sonic Resonator (see below). Once inside, you will find multiple large Titanium deposits surrounding a large Angel Bloom. This cave is one of the richest Titanium farming spots in the game and also unlocks the Heat Resistance Adaptation when cleared.

Quartz — Northern Trench (~400 Meters North)

A trench roughly 400 meters north of the Lifepod serves as a strong mid-game hub for Quartz, Titanium, and Lead simultaneously. Large Quartz nodes here yield multiple units per blast, and the density of nodes makes the trip very efficient.

    How to Clear Bloom Biofilm

Bloom Biofilm is the tough, web-like organic growth that blocks doorways into colony ruins and cave entrances across the map. It looks like a white fibrous curtain stretched across a gap. Without the Sonic Resonator, you cannot get through it at all.

    To remove Bloom Biofilm:

    1. Equip the Sonic Resonator.
    2. Aim directly at the Bloom Biofilm covering the entrance.
    3. Hold right-click to charge the pulse fully — wait for both meters to fill completely.
    4. Release. One fully charged blast destroys the Biofilm and clears the way through.

Behind most Bloom Biofilm-blocked doorways you will find abandoned colony ruins full of scannable objects — furniture, machines, tools, posters, and more. Every scan can unlock new base-building blueprints. Always clear Bloom Biofilm when you find it, even if you do not immediately need whatever is behind it. See our guide on how to unlock blueprints and crafting recipes for more on scanning.

Bloom Sap also sometimes blocks small funnel openings that release oxygen bubbles. Chop this away with your Survival Multitool to restore the oxygen column — useful during long cave dives.

    How to Clear Bloom Infestations

Bloom Infestations are more serious than simple Biofilm. They are entire hazardous zones marked by winding purple roots and clusters of glowing white buds. The moment you enter one, small fast-moving Bloom fish swarm you and deal considerable damage.

Clearing these zones is not optional for progression. Each cleared Bloom Infestation unlocks a new Angel Comb, which grants you a crucial Adaptation — passive upgrades that let you survive deeper water, hotter temperatures, and other environmental hazards. These are tied directly to story progress.

    How Bloom Infestations Work

Every Bloom Infestation has two Bloom Nodes. Each Node has multiple glowing white buds growing from purple roots. You must destroy every bud on both Nodes to fully clear the infestation and unlock the Angel Comb reward.

The purple roots connecting the Bloom Nodes are visible in the environment. Follow them from the first cleared Node to find the second one faster.

    How to Destroy Bloom Nodes

    1. Equip the Sonic Resonator and enter the infestation area.
    2. Locate the white glowing buds growing from the purple roots. These are the targets.
    3. Aim at a bud and fire a charged pulse. One charged blast destroys one bud.
    4. Work through all the buds in the first Node area systematically.
    5. Your PDA will confirm when the first Node is cleansed.
    6. Follow the purple roots to the second Node and repeat.
    7. Once both Nodes are cleared, the Angel Comb unlocks.

    Dealing with Bloom Fish

The Bloom fish that swarm you are aggressive and can deal significant damage if they gang up on you. You can kill them individually with the Sonic Resonator, but this wastes charges and is slower. The smarter play is to ignore the fish and focus entirely on the buds. When you destroy the last bud in an area, every Bloom fish in that zone dies automatically. They are tied to the buds — kill the buds, the fish go with them.

If the fish are overwhelming you, swim away briefly to break their aggression, then re-enter and continue targeting buds. Bring First Aid Kits as a backup. Our guide on how to get Fiber and Fibrous Pulp covers crafting First Aid Kits if you need to stock up.

    Bloom Parasites on Creatures

As you progress further into the game, the Bloom virus starts infecting living creatures. Infected creatures become more aggressive and dangerous than their uninfected counterparts. You can cleanse them by hitting the Bloom Parasite growths on their bodies with a charged Sonic Resonator pulse.

Some Gene Donors — the alien organisms that grant you Adaptations — are also trapped or hidden by Bloom Parasite growths. Without the Sonic Resonator, those Adaptations are completely inaccessible. The Heat Tolerance Adaptation required to survive in volcanic biomes is locked behind one such Bloom-infected Gene Donor encounter.

Sonic Resonator Tips and Best Practices

    • Always have spare batteries. Each charged shot drains your battery. Deep mining runs can empty it fast. Carry two or three spare Basic Batteries at all times.
    • Focus buds, not fish. During Bloom Infestations, ignore the fish entirely. Go straight for the white buds. Killing all buds kills all fish in the zone automatically.
    • Follow the purple roots. They connect all the Bloom Nodes in an infestation area. Use them as a navigation guide to find the second Node quickly after clearing the first.
    • Make sure your base Fabricator has power. The Sonic Resonator cannot be crafted at the Lifepod Fabricator. You need a powered base Fabricator. Check our guide on what to build in your base first if your base power is not sorted yet.
    • Mine large nodes on the way to missions. If a story objective takes you through a resource-dense area, bring the Sonic Resonator and mine as you go. There is no reason to make separate trips.
    • Use the Scanner Station. Once built at your base, the Scanner Station tracks resource deposits within 300 meters including large nodes, saving you time searching.
    • Large nodes respawn over time. If you have cleared an area, revisit it later. Large deposits can replenish, giving you another high-yield run from the same location.
    • Keep inventory space free before mining. Auto-collection only works if you have room. If your inventory is full, the resources from blasted nodes will float and may despawn. Bring a Portable Locker on long mining runs.

To move faster between resource nodes during mining trips, see our guide on how to swim faster in Subnautica 2. For everything you can build once your resources start flowing in, check our guide on how to get Rubber and Lucifer Rotsac — Rubber goes into many of the early survival items that make mining runs more comfortable.

Summary: Mining Large Nodes and Clearing Bloom

    1. Scan 2 broken Sonic Resonator fragments — the Old Habitat (~370 meters north) has two in the same building.
    2. Build a base with power, set up a Processor, and craft 2 Titanium Ingots.
    3. Gather 1 Basic Battery, 2 Lead, and 1 Wiring Kit.
    4. Craft the Sonic Resonator at your base Fabricator.
    5. Equip it, aim at any large resource node, charge fully, and release to shatter and auto-collect.
    6. To clear Bloom Biofilm: one fully charged blast destroys the web blocking any doorway or cave entrance.
    7. To clear Bloom Infestations: destroy all white buds on both Bloom Nodes. Ignore the fish — they die when the buds go down. Collect your Angel Comb and Adaptation reward.

The Sonic Resonator is the single biggest progression unlock in the early-to-mid game. It turns resource gathering from a slow drip into a proper operation, and it opens up parts of the map and story content that are completely inaccessible without it. Get it early, keep the battery topped up, and the alien ocean becomes a much more manageable place.

You can find the game on Steam or Xbox Game Pass. For more help, see our guides on how to craft the Scanner, how to get the Flashlight, best early upgrades and progression path, and our full Subnautica 2 co-op multiplayer guide.
