The Price of Magic quest in Gothic 1 Remake is one of the first quests you should complete in the Old Camp. It is short, the items are easy to get, and the reward gives you access to Rune Magic for the rest of the game. No fighting required.
TL;DR
- Talk to Torrez in the Old Camp southern market to start the quest
- Buy 1 Parchment from Graham near the north gate
- Buy 2 Wolf’s Claws from Mordrag near the south gate (or loot wolves)
- Return to Torrez and spend 5 Learning Points to unlock Rune Magic
- Choose the Firebolt Rune — it is the better pick for most players
- Torrez’s shop unlocks after the quest, selling more runes and magic items
What Is the Price of Magic Quest?
This is an early side quest in the Old Camp. A Fire Mage named Torrez asks you to fetch two items. Once you bring them back, he teaches you Rune Magic. That lets you cast spells using rune stones, which are permanent — unlike scrolls that disappear after one use.
It is one of the best early upgrades in the game. The opening hours are hard. Enemies hit hard, your gear is weak, and melee feels dangerous. Getting a ranged magic attack changes that fast.

Where to Find Torrez in Gothic 1 Remake
Torrez is a Fire Mage who walks around the southern market area of the Old Camp. Look for the section with cloth hanging above the stalls, near the well. He is usually close to traders like Fisk, Dexter, and Mordrag during the day.
To get there from the main entrance, walk south through the camp past the Chapel. When you reach the covered market, Torrez should be somewhere around the well area.
In some cases, Torrez will approach you first and start a conversation as you walk through the market. If he does not, just look for him near the well and talk to him directly.
How to Start the Price of Magic Quest
Talk to Torrez and bring up the letter for the Fire Mages. Express interest in learning magic. After a short conversation, he offers to make you a magician. Accept his offer.

He then asks you to bring him:
- 1 Parchment (a blank piece of scroll paper)
- 2 Wolf’s Claws
Both items can be bought in the Old Camp, so you do not need to go outside the walls. Make sure you have around 30 Ore Nuggets on you before you start shopping — that is enough to cover both items comfortably.
You also need 5 Learning Points saved up before returning to Torrez. You spend these when he teaches you Rune Magic at the end. If you have not levelled up enough yet, keep exploring and fighting before completing the fetch run.
Where to Find Parchment in Gothic 1 Remake

The Parchment is sold by a trader named Graham. He keeps his stall near the north gate of the Old Camp, close to the cooking area. He also sells the world map, so he is easy to spot if you have been looking for one.
Just open his shop and buy the Parchment. No fighting, no sneaking. It should cost you roughly 13 to 16 Ore Nuggets depending on your playthrough.
Speaking of the map — if you have not picked one up yet, here is how to get a map in Gothic 1 Remake while you are at Graham’s stall.
Where to Find Wolf’s Claws in Gothic 1 Remake
Wolf’s Claws are sold by Mordrag, who sits near the south gate of the Old Camp. You should spot him carving wood near a hut during the day. Buy both claws from him — plan on around 14 to 16 Ore for the pair.
If you want to save Ore, you can also loot Wolf’s Claws from wolves outside the camp. Kill two wolves and check the body for the claws. This takes longer but costs nothing.
Either route works. Buying from Mordrag is faster and safer, especially at this stage of the game when wolves can still be a real threat.
How to Complete the Price of Magic Quest
Once you have both the Parchment and the two Wolf’s Claws, go back to Torrez at the well in the southern market. Hand over the items. Confirm you have 5 Learning Points ready before you do — the training step cannot finish without them.
Torrez will explain how Rune Magic works. He tells you that casting spells drains Mana, and you need to recover it before casting again. More on that below.
He then lets you pick your first rune. This is the main choice in the quest.
Firebolt Rune or Healing Rune – Which Should You Choose?

Torrez gives you a free choice between two permanent runes:
- Firebolt Rune – Fires a fire projectile that deals 35 fire damage from range
- Healing Rune – Restores a significant amount of health
Take the Firebolt Rune. Almost every experienced player recommends it, and for good reason. You can already heal by eating food, drinking potions, or sleeping. You do not need a dedicated healing spell in the early game. But ranged damage? That is much harder to come by at this stage.
Firebolt lets you open fights before enemies reach you. Against wolves, molerats, and stronger human enemies, landing hits before they close the gap is a huge deal. It makes early exploration much safer.
You can buy the Healing Rune from Torrez’s shop later anyway, though it will cost you around 536 Ore Nuggets. The Firebolt Rune costs around 322 Ore Nuggets if you want to buy it instead. Since Firebolt is cheaper and more immediately useful, there is no reason to take Healing as your free pick.
If you really prefer to start with Healing, you can sell it later for around 401 Ore Nuggets and buy Firebolt — netting you a small profit in the process. But for most runs, just take Firebolt from the start.
How to Recover Mana After Using Magic
Mana is required to cast rune spells. Once it runs out, you cannot cast until you recover it. Here are the main ways to do that:
- Sleep or rest – Passing time restores Mana. Check out how to sleep and pass time in Gothic 1 Remake if you are not sure how to do this.
- Swamp Weed – A cheap and quick option. Dexter in the Old Camp market sells it and may even offer you some for free. Be aware it temporarily reduces your Dexterity stat.
- Mana potions – These are available from Torrez’s shop once you complete the quest, but they are expensive early on. Save these for important fights.
- Train your Mana pool – Cronos, a Water Mage at the New Camp, can increase your total Mana in exchange for Learning Points. Worth visiting once you have explored a bit further.
What Do You Get After Completing the Price of Magic?
Once the quest is done, you walk away with:
- The Rune Magic skill unlocked permanently
- Your first free rune (Firebolt or Healing)
- Access to Torrez’s shop, which sells more runes, scrolls, and mana potions
The shop inventory is expensive at first, but having access to it matters as you progress. You can start saving Ore for additional runes once your economy improves.
