rapier parry upgrades in valor mortis

TL;DR – Best Parry Build at a Glance

    • Core weapons: Rapier (primary) + Pistol (secondary).
    • The Rapier deals 150 posture damage per perfect parry – the highest of any melee weapon.
    • Parry window: 0.2 seconds for most attacks. Duellist’s Focus widens it.
    • Best Rapier upgrades: Remise (level 2) → Invigorating Seconda (level 8) → Vigorous Terza (level 10).
    • Best Pistol upgrades: Ruthlessness (level 5) → Robust Chamber (level 8) → Tactical Reload (level 10).
    • Must-have Ambers: Duellist’s Focus (wider parry window) and Dominatus (heal on critical attacks).
    • Top stat priorities: Parrying Impact and Critical Damage are the two stats that define the build’s payoff.
    • The loop: Parry → posture breaks → critical hit → Dominatus heals you → repeat.
    • High skill ceiling but one of the strongest setups in the game once it clicks.

Parrying in Valor Mortis is not just a defensive move. It is the fastest way to break an enemy’s posture, and a broken posture opens up a critical hit that deals far more damage than anything else in your kit. The parry build takes that loop and builds an entire combat style around it – turning deflected attacks into offensive momentum.

It has a real learning curve. You are playing aggressively defensive, staying close to enemies rather than backing off, and timing your parries precisely within a tight window. But once it is running, you will be bursting through enemy posture in a few exchanges, landing heavy critical hits, and healing yourself in the process. This guide covers every piece of the build and exactly how to put it together.

How the Parry System Works in Valor Mortis

Before getting into the build, it helps to understand what the system actually does under the hood.

A parry is triggered by pressing your block input just before an enemy’s attack connects – not holding it, but timing a tap at the right moment. Almost every enemy attack in the game has a 0.2-second parry window. That is tight but consistent. The key is learning the wind-up animation for each attack type rather than reacting to the strike itself.

A successful parry deals posture damage to the enemy. Every weapon has a different posture damage value per parry, and the Rapier is the best – landing a perfect parry with it deals 150 posture damage, compared to 100 with the Saber. Regular melee hits also deal posture damage, just at a lower rate.

When an enemy’s posture bar fills completely, they become staggered and vulnerable. You can then land a critical attack – a special, high-damage strike that deals fixed bonus damage based on your Critical Damage stat investment. This is the payoff the entire build is designed to reach as quickly and as often as possible.

One important note: the Rapier cannot block attacks normally. It only works through precisely timed parries. That is the trade-off for its higher parry posture damage. If you miss the timing, you take the hit. This is what makes the build high-risk, high-reward.

Why the Rapier Is the Best Parry Weapon

The Rapier is the dedicated parry weapon in Valor Mortis. Every aspect of its design points toward defensive precision and punishing enemies through timed deflections. Its upgrade tree is built almost entirely around parry rewards – each perk triggers on a successful parry and gives you something valuable back.

It also has a wider parry window than the Saber, meaning the timing is more forgiving before any Ambers are factored in. And unlike the Saber, the Rapier can also shatter Nephtoglobin weak points – the red spots scattered around levels and on certain enemies – which saves you from needing to swap to a firearm for those interactions.

For a full breakdown of the Rapier’s stats and location, see our dedicated Valor Mortis Rapier sword guide.

All Rapier Upgrades – Which to Choose

rapier parry upgrades in valor mortis

The Rapier upgrade tree is straightforward compared to the branching choices on other weapons, but two of the level 8 choices matter and you need to pick wisely.

    • Level 2 – Remise: Consecutive parries increase the damage of your next heavy attack. The effect can be extended by attacking enemies, so landing hits between parries keeps the buff active. A strong early-game perk that rewards the parry rhythm this build wants.
    • Level 8 – Astute Quarta: Restores Nephtoglobin on a successful parry. Good for builds that rely on Transmutation abilities, particularly Stasis builds that burn through Nephtoglobin constantly.
    • Level 8 – Invigorating Seconda: Restores Endurance (stamina) on a successful parry. This is the recommended pick for the pure parry build. Stamina is what you spend on attacks and dodges, and parrying is constantly draining it during active combat. Getting it back on every successful parry means you can stay in the fight longer without running dry.
    • Level 10 – Vigorous Terza: Restores Health on a successful parry. Combined with Dominatus (which heals on critical hits) and Invigorating Seconda, the fully upgraded Rapier becomes remarkably self-sustaining. Parries heal you, refill your stamina, and break posture toward a critical that also heals you.

Recommended path: Remise → Invigorating Seconda → Vigorous Terza. If you are running a Stasis build alongside the Rapier, swap Invigorating Seconda for Astute Quarta for the Nephtoglobin return on parries.

Best Pistol Upgrades for the Parry Build

    pistol upgrades in valor mortis
    pistol upgrades in valor mortis

The Pistol plays a support role in this build. Its job is to add posture damage from range, accelerate posture breaks during boss fights, and amplify critical hits when they land. You are not using it as a primary damage source – you are using it as a posture tool that feeds the Rapier’s strengths.

    • Level 2 – Nephtoglobin Infusion (Bullet): Hold the Reload button to chamber a special posture-breaking round that costs Nephtoglobin instead of bullets. Deals 40 posture damage – four times the standard shot. Use this whenever Nephtoglobin is available for a free, high-value posture hit.
    • Level 5 – Ruthlessness: Every Pistol round that hits an enemy empowers your next melee attack. The more shots land before you swing, the harder the follow-up hit. Since this build sets up critical attacks after posture breaks, Ruthlessness makes those critical hits significantly harder. This is the correct level 5 pick for the parry build.
    • Level 8 – Robust Chamber: Increases magazine size. More rounds between reloads, which means more consistent posture pressure from range between parry exchanges. The recommended pick here over Ingenious Engineering, since this build does not rely on rapid Tactical Reload procs the way the Ignite build does.
    • Level 10 – Tactical Reload: The first shot after a full reload is greatly amplified. Still valuable here for boss fights, where landing a Tactical Reload shot at the moment a boss is about to stagger can deal massive bonus damage.

Best Ambers for the Parry Build

Ambers are slotted at lanterns and work passively. You have five slots that unlock at player levels 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. For the parry build, two Ambers are essential and three are strong supporting picks.

    Duellist’s Focus – Essential

This Amber widens the parry window for melee weapons. It has one rank, so the copy you find is immediately at full effect. Found in a chest in The Battlefield, with the Onslaught Arch lantern being the nearest rest point. This is the foundation of the entire parry build – it makes the 0.2-second window more forgiving, which matters enormously when you are learning enemy patterns or facing fast attacks. Equip this first, and never take it off.

    Dominatus – Essential

Dominatus restores Health whenever you land a critical attack. Since the whole loop of this build ends in a critical hit after breaking posture, Dominatus turns every posture break into a heal. Has 3 copies available across the game and can be ranked up. The first copy is found in a chest in a red ornate chest in Chapter 2 (Valley of Ashes area). Pairs directly with Duellist’s Focus – the wider parry window helps you land more parries, parries break posture, posture breaks lead to criticals, criticals heal you. The synergy is as complete as it gets.

    Sixth Sense – Strong Pick

Increases Pistol damage after a perfect dodge. Also causes dodging bullets to briefly slow time. Since you will be dodging unblockable red attacks regularly (the Rapier cannot parry these), Sixth Sense rewards those moments with increased firearm damage. Found in the City of Orphans. Good third Amber for this build.

    Lucky Shot – Supporting Pick

Gives your Pistol a chance to fire without consuming ammunition. Keeps your ammo supply topped up during longer encounters and means you can fire posture-breaking shots more freely. Available in three copies across the Caverns, Vale of Wrath, and the Fortress – collect all three to raise it to rank 3.

    Volatile End – Boss Option

Pistol shots on Nephtoglobin weak points trigger an explosion for bonus damage. Particularly strong against bosses that expose weak points during certain attack phases. Pair with Sixth Sense and Lucky Shot for a ranged damage burst option during boss encounters.

Best Stats for the Parry Build

Stats are purchased at the upgrade board using Catalysts. These are the priority investments for this build, in order:

    • Maximum Health – always first; you need enough health buffer to survive occasional missed parries
    • Maximum Endurance – stamina for attacks, dodges, and sequences before Invigorating Seconda starts paying back
    • Parrying Impact – increases posture damage on each parry by 5% per rank, up to four ranks available. This directly shortens how many parries you need before a posture break. Stack it as high as you can
    • Melee Damage – stronger base attacks between parry windows
    • Critical Damage – increases the damage of your posture-break critical attacks by 5% per rank. The entire payoff of the build comes from these hits, so this is the other stat you want stacked alongside Parrying Impact
    • Headshot Damage – Pistol headshots deal heavy posture and direct damage; worth investing in once Parrying Impact and Critical Damage are capped
    • Melee Endurance Cost – reduces the stamina drain of sword attacks, letting you swing more freely
    • Ammunition Drop Chance – keeps Pistol ammo flowing
    • Endurance Regeneration – faster baseline stamina recovery on top of Invigorating Seconda returns
    • Healing Effectiveness – stretches each Ferrofluid Flask further

If you are not sure where to start with stat investment earlier in the game, our guide on the best stats to level first gives you a broader early-game framework.

How to Play the Parry Build – The Combat Loop

The parry build has a clear, repeating loop that every engagement should follow:

    • Open from range. Fire 2–3 Pistol shots at the enemy before they close the gap. Standard shots deal posture damage; use a Nephtoglobin Infusion bullet if available for a burst of 40 posture in one shot. Ruthlessness will amplify your first melee hit after these shots.
    • Engage in melee and start parrying. Wait for the enemy’s attack animation. Do not hold block – time a tap as the attack reaches you. A successful parry deals 150 posture damage with the Rapier and restores your Endurance via Invigorating Seconda.
    • Chain parries. The Remise buff stacks with each consecutive parry, increasing your heavy attack damage. Keep parrying rather than retreating. Every deflection brings the enemy closer to a posture break and recovers your stamina.
    • When posture breaks, land the critical. Press the critical attack input during the stagger window. Dominatus heals you for the hit. Ruthlessness from earlier Pistol shots makes this hit harder.
    • Reset and repeat. Step back briefly, fire a Pistol shot or two, and restart the parry cycle. The whole fight becomes a rhythm of building posture and cashing critical hits.

    Handling Unblockable Red Attacks

The Rapier cannot parry red unblockable attacks – they glow red to signal this. When you see that colour, dodge instead of parrying. Sixth Sense rewards these dodges with increased Pistol damage, so immediately follow up with a shot after a successful dodge. Alternatively, the Blunderbuss with its Showstopper upgrade can interrupt unblockable attacks if you want a second firearm option for these situations.

Using Mighty Rounds for Boss Fights

Mighty Rounds are consumable items that load posture-breaking rounds into your Pistol. Use them during boss encounters to accelerate posture breaks significantly. A full magazine of Mighty Rounds combined with the Nephtoglobin Infusion bullet can break some boss posture bars in seconds, opening an early critical hit. Keep a few in your quick slots whenever you are heading into a major fight.

Is the Rapier and Pistol the Best Parry Combination?

For most players, yes. The Rapier handles posture damage through melee, the Pistol applies additional posture from range and amplifies criticals via Ruthlessness, and the two upgrade trees reinforce each other perfectly. Invigorating Seconda and Vigorous Terza keep you healthy and stamina-positive as long as parries land. Duellist’s Focus and Dominatus then make the parry window more accessible and the payoff more rewarding.

The Blunderbuss is sometimes suggested as an alternative firearm for parry builds because its Showstopper upgrade can interrupt unblockable attacks, which is something the Pistol cannot do. If you find unblockable attacks the biggest obstacle in your playthroughs, the Blunderbuss swap is worth considering. For most content though, the Pistol’s versatility, posture utility, and Ruthlessness synergy make it the better overall pick. You can find more detail on both firearms in our Blunderbuss guide and Pistol guide.

Parry Build Tips and Common Mistakes

    • Watch the animation, not the hitbox. Parrying by feel – reacting to the moment the weapon is about to connect – is more reliable than trying to time it visually. Study each enemy type’s attack wind-up and parry on that cue rather than on the impact.
    • Never hold block with the Rapier. Holding block with it does not protect you the way it does with the Saber. You take hits if you block normally with the Rapier. Parry only, or dodge.
    • Do not retreat after every parry. The Remise buff rewards consecutive parries. Staying in range and chaining deflections builds posture faster and keeps the buff active. Backing off after each parry resets the rhythm and slows the posture break.
    • Use Nephtoglobin Infusion bullets every time they are available. These cost Nephtoglobin, not bullets. They deal four times the posture damage of a standard shot. Weave them in between parry sequences every time your Nephtoglobin is topped up.
    • Stack Parrying Impact early. It is the single most important stat node for this build. Even two or three ranks of it noticeably shortens how long it takes to break posture, which means more critical hits per fight.
    • Against bosses, use Mighty Rounds before the fight starts. Load them before the encounter begins so you have a full magazine of posture-breaking ammunition from the first moment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best parry build in Valor Mortis?

The best parry build uses the Rapier as the primary weapon and the Pistol as a secondary. Take Invigorating Seconda and Vigorous Terza on the Rapier, Ruthlessness and Tactical Reload on the Pistol, and slot Duellist’s Focus and Dominatus as your core Ambers. Invest heavily in Parrying Impact and Critical Damage stats to maximise the payoff from posture breaks.

What is the parry window in Valor Mortis?

Most enemy attacks in Valor Mortis have a 0.2-second parry window – 435 out of 449 attack types in the game share this window. Press the block input just before the strike connects to trigger a parry. The Duellist’s Focus Amber widens this window, making it more forgiving.

Why is the Rapier better than the Saber for parrying?

A perfect parry with the Rapier deals 150 posture damage, compared to 100 with the Saber. The Rapier also has a wider default parry window, can shatter Nephtoglobin weak points (the Saber cannot), and has an upgrade tree built entirely around parry rewards. The trade-off is that the Rapier cannot block normally – if you miss a parry timing, you take the hit.

What do Duellist’s Focus and Dominatus do?

Duellist’s Focus is an Amber found in The Battlefield that widens the parry window for melee weapons, giving you more room for error on timing. Dominatus is an Amber found starting in Chapter 2 (Valley of Ashes) that restores Health whenever you land a critical attack. Together they make the parry loop easier to execute and self-sustaining once it is running.

What is Invigorating Seconda in Valor Mortis?

Invigorating Seconda is a level 8 Rapier upgrade that restores Endurance on a successful parry. Since the parry build relies on staying in melee and chaining parries, this upgrade addresses the stamina drain of continuous combat and keeps you in the fight without needing to disengage to recover.

Can the Rapier parry unblockable attacks in Valor Mortis?

No. Red glowing attacks are unblockable and cannot be parried by any weapon. Against these you must dodge instead. The Sixth Sense Amber rewards these dodges with increased Pistol damage immediately after.

What stats should I level first for a parry build?

After Maximum Health and Maximum Endurance, invest immediately in Parrying Impact and Critical Damage. Parrying Impact increases posture damage dealt per parry, shortening how many deflections you need. Critical Damage increases the payoff when posture breaks. These two stats define the entire build’s effectiveness and should be maxed out as early as possible.

Is the parry build good for beginners in Valor Mortis?

It has a higher skill ceiling than other builds and is not the easiest starting point. The Rapier cannot block normally, meaning missed parry timing results in direct damage. For new players, the Saber paired with the Pistol is a more forgiving introduction to parrying because the Saber can fall back to blocking when parry timing is missed. Once you are comfortable with enemy patterns, transition to the full Rapier parry build for the higher damage ceiling.
