    TL;DR

    • The Fallen Village is the setting of Chapter 3: Rendezvous and is right next to the Abandoned Church.
    • To get there: exit the Abandoned Church through the door next to James, turn right, move through the cemetery, and pass through the open space to load into the region.
    • The main quest here is Rendezvous — find James’s comrade Louis, who is trapped somewhere in the village.
    • The Fallen Village has four Lanterns: Fields, Marketplace, Orchard, and Path of Fire.
    • You unlock two new weapons here: the Rapier (near the Abandoned Church route) and the Blunderbuss (inside the Fields area).
    • Two side quests are available: The Scarecrow (rewards Bountiful Harvest Amber) and Lullaby (rewards Tomorrow’s Promise Amber).
    • The area boss is The Iron Marshall — slow, telegraphed swings, weak to ranged and Fire attacks.
    • Completing the Fallen Village gives you the Grapple ability, which unlocks access to the Caverns and opens up earlier areas you couldn’t reach before.

What Is the Fallen Village in Valor Mortis?

The Fallen Village is the main location for Chapter 3: Rendezvous in Valor Mortis. It’s a plague-ravaged settlement full of corrupted townspeople, hostile soldiers from Napoleon’s Eternal Guard, and secrets tucked into every corner. It’s one of the richest areas in the early game for collectibles, weapons, and side quests — and it’s also where the difficulty starts to pick up properly.

The chapter is triggered after you defeat General Lothaire and reach the Abandoned Church hub. James, one of the characters you meet there, asks you to visit a nearby village to find his comrade Louis. That village is the Fallen Village. From the moment you step through the cemetery and into the region, you’re in Chapter 3 territory.

It’s a meaningful step forward in the game. Fast travel becomes available at this point, so you can start warping between activated Lanterns. Two major weapons unlock here. The Grapple ability is waiting at the end. And the area itself is large enough that players often miss collectibles on the first pass, especially the two side quests that reward some of the best Ambers in the early game.

How to Get to the Fallen Village in Valor Mortis

nearby village location in valor mortis

The route from the Abandoned Church to the Fallen Village is straightforward but easy to second-guess if you take a wrong turn. Here’s the exact path:

    • Step 1: From inside the Abandoned Church, exit through the door next to James. This is the door on the same side of the room as him, not the main entrance you came from.
    • Step 2: Once outside, turn right and keep moving forward along the path.
    • Step 3: The road is long. Follow it until you reach a cemetery. Defeat the enemies here and turn left.
    • Step 4: Continue through the open space ahead. The game will transition and load you into the Fallen Village map.

One thing worth noting: at a certain junction along this route, you’ll see a right-hand branch leading toward the Fortress. Do not go there yet — that is a late-game area you cannot meaningfully explore without the Shield Transmutation, which isn’t unlocked until Chapter 8. Stay on the path toward the Fallen Village. See our Valor Mortis all transmutation abilities location guide for a full breakdown of which abilities unlock which areas.

All Four Lanterns in the Fallen Village

The Fallen Village has four Lanterns spread across its different sub-areas. Activating each one as you go is important — they serve as your checkpoints, fast travel points, and the places where you spend Catalysts to level William up.

    • Fields Lantern — The first Lantern you encounter after entering the Fallen Village. The Fields area is where you’ll find the Blunderbuss, encounter the Risen Grenadier enemies, and trigger The Scarecrow side quest.
    • Marketplace Lantern — Deeper into the village, where the open settlement area opens up. Enemy groups patrol the streets here. The Lullaby side quest starts near this Lantern, and several Ambers and Flask upgrades are tucked into nearby buildings.
    • Orchard Lantern — Further along in the chapter. A chest in the boss area near this Lantern contains an Amber if you climb up into the building to the right of the area from the direction you entered.
    • Path of Fire Lantern — The final Lantern before the Iron Marshall boss encounter at the end of the chapter.

Weapons You Unlock in the Fallen Village

Chapter 3 gives you access to two new weapons, both of which are available before you even reach the deeper parts of the Fallen Village.

    Rapier

    rapier in valor mortis
    rapier in valor mortis

The Rapier is actually found on the route from the Abandoned Church to the Fallen Village, not inside the village itself. After defeating General Lothaire, enter the church and meet James. Head out the door next to him and turn right. Walk to the end of the path to find a corpse impaled by a weapon — that’s the Rapier. Pull it out to unlock it.

The Rapier is a fast, precision-focused sword designed around parrying and targeting enemy weak points directly with its thrusting attacks — unlike the Pistol, which you shoot at weak points from a distance. For a full breakdown of how to use it, see our Valor Mortis Rapier guide.

    Blunderbuss

    blunderbuss in valor mortis
    blunderbuss in valor mortis

The Blunderbuss is found in the Fallen Village Fields area. Progress along the story route until you meet a Volunteer enemy wielding an oversized sword. Defeat him to unlock the carriage behind him. Read the Quartermaster Letter on the desk inside, then unlock the cushioned display case to find the Blunderbuss. It’s a required pickup — you won’t progress without grabbing it.

This is your close-range shotgun equivalent. Two bullets, devastating at short range, and capable of hitting multiple enemies with one shot when they’re clustered together. The area immediately after picking it up has a horde of weaker enemies — the perfect setup for the Scattershot achievement. For everything else you need to know about it, check our Valor Mortis Blunderbuss guide. For a full rundown of all weapons across the game, our Valor Mortis all swords and guns list covers every location.

All Collectibles in the Fallen Village

Chapter 3: Rendezvous is one of the most collectible-dense chapters in the game. Here’s everything you can find across the region:

    Ambers in the Fallen Village

    • Bountiful Harvest — Reward for completing The Scarecrow side quest (Fields area). Restores health when you collect Nephtoglobin Remnants — excellent for Stasis-focused builds.
    • Tomorrow’s Promise — Reward for completing the Lullaby side quest (Marketplace area). Makes each Ferrofluid Flask heal more health over time. One of the best early survivability Ambers in the game.
    • Warrior’s Fury — Marketplace area. Enter the house that a group of enemies is actively shooting at. Boosts your damage and attack speed with each kill — great for aggressive builds.
    • Glass Soldier — Also in the Marketplace area. Favors aggressive melee play with a high-risk, high-reward effect.
    • Volatile End — Marketplace area. Makes your firearms deal a damaging explosion on every weak-point hit. Pairs strongly with the Blunderbuss and Rapier you’ve just unlocked.
    • Duellist’s Focus — Also found in Chapter 3. Increases your parry window — one of the most useful early Ambers for players learning the parry system.

One additional Chapter 3 Amber is found in the Battlefield section before the Fallen Village itself, not inside the village. Keep exploring the outer areas when you can.

Ferrofluid Flask Upgrades in the Fallen Village

    • Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade #4 — Fields Lantern area. When the path splits and there’s a wooden gate with a Grenadier on the right, go the opposite direction toward the large house. The upgrade is in a chest next to the well nearby. This detour also connects back to the previous Lantern as a shortcut.
    • Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade #5 — Marketplace area. When you reach the open village section with enemy groups patrolling the streets, take the first left path. The upgrade is in a chest inside the house on the corner.
    • Empty Ferrofluid Flask #2 — Marketplace area. Grapple across the water near the Marketplace Lantern. When you reach the area with two plague pillars that have grapple points on them, the Empty Flask is in a chest to the right after the second pillar.

Side Quests in the Fallen Village

The Fallen Village has two side quests, both of which are worth doing. Neither is missable — you can return after the story to complete them — but doing them during your natural run through Chapter 3 is the most efficient approach.

    The Scarecrow Quest

This quest begins near the Fields Lantern. Shortly after entering the Fallen Village, you’ll find a man tied up like a scarecrow, missing his arms. The objective is to find two missing items and return them to him.

The first item — a lover’s pendant — is found behind the scarecrow in the nearby field. Walk into the field and look for a small clearing with a dead body and a cross. The pendant is right there.

The second item — a note — is trickier. Go left and up the hill into a house shortly after the field section. The house links back to the start of the area but also contains the letter you need, hidden inside.

Return both items to the scarecrow. He’ll direct you to a shed — the one the crows flew off from when you dispersed them. Climb to the top level of the barn and interact with the two pillows to view a memory and complete the quest. The reward is the Bountiful Harvest Amber, which converts Nephtoglobin Remnant pickups into health restoration.

    The Lullaby Quest

This quest begins just left of the Marketplace Lantern. Enter a house near the lantern and approach the empty crib in the center of the room. You’ll hear a baby crying, and the Lullaby quest will start automatically.

To complete it, you need to find a Toy for the crib. Here’s what to do:

    • Head out the back door of the house and look for the Weathered Key on the muddy ground near the enemies outside.
    • Return to the Lantern and rest to reset the enemies.
    • Follow the path back to a previous area until you find a bridge you can jump across to reach a house on the other side.
    • Use the Weathered Key on the door of this house and collect the Toy inside.
    • Return to the original house and place the Toy in the crib to complete the quest.

The reward is the Tomorrow’s Promise Amber. This makes the Ferrofluid Flask heal over time rather than all at once, which stretches each use further and is one of the most reliable early-game survivability tools in Valor Mortis.

The Iron Marshall Boss Fight in the Fallen Village

The Iron Marshall is the boss at the end of Chapter 3. He’s found in the Fallen Village after passing through the Orchard and Path of Fire Lanterns, and he marks the conclusion of the Rendezvous main quest.

He’s a heavily armoured commander-type enemy who swings a heavy flail with slow, wide sweeping attacks. Compared to General Lothaire, he’s more forgiving — his movements are readable and he telegraphs his swings clearly. That said, his sweep range is deceptive. Getting too close when he’s mid-swing can catch you off guard even if you thought you were safe.

How to Beat the Iron Marshall

    • Stay at range and use Fire. Pure ranged play is genuinely one of the most efficient approaches here. Use your Pistol to chip damage and apply Fire Transmutation to build Ignite. He has a weak spot on his back — if you can get behind him and fire, the damage payoff is significant.
    • Break his posture through sustained parries. If you prefer melee, focus on parry timing. His attacks are slow and telegraphed, which makes them among the easier patterns to parry consistently in the game. Each successful parry builds his posture damage. Once his posture breaks, land a critical attack.
    • Shoot the weak spot. Aim for the glowing lambent blister on his back during recovery windows to deal bonus damage and restore Nephtoglobin. The Pistol is your best tool here — use it every time he recovers from a swing.
    • Earn 7,000 Catalysts. Defeating the Iron Marshall drops 7,000 Catalysts, a solid boost that lets you push further on your upgrade tree at the next Lantern.

The Ultima Ratio Regum achievement/trophy is awarded for defeating The Iron Marshall. After this fight, weaker versions of his soldiers — Remnants of the Iron Regiment — start appearing as regular enemies in later areas. The attack patterns you learn here remain relevant throughout the game.

What You Get After Completing the Fallen Village

Finishing Chapter 3 is a genuine milestone. Beyond the Iron Marshall’s Catalyst reward, completing the Fallen Village gives you two important things:

    • The Grapple ability — After defeating the Iron Marshall, approach the body he was guarding in the destroyed house nearby to receive the Nephtoglobin Grapple. This is one of the most impactful unlocks in the game. Every glowing blue anchor point you’ve seen but couldn’t interact with is now usable. Entire sections of earlier areas open up for exploration.
    • Louis is rescued — The Rendezvous main quest completes. You return to the Abandoned Church, where James and Louis will have new dialogue and new story direction waiting.

After completing the Fallen Village, your next destination is the Caverns. However, the door to the Caverns is locked and requires the Cave Grotto Key, which you do not receive automatically after the boss fight. You’ll need to return to the Abandoned Church first and follow the next story beat to get it — the Grapple ability you just unlocked is required to reach the Caverns door from the Church side.

Fallen Village Tips — Things Not to Miss

    • Don’t go toward the Fortress at the junction. The right-hand branch near the Church leads to a late-game area that needs the Shield Transmutation to navigate. Players who explore it early waste time and often get stuck. Stay left toward the Fallen Village.
    • Do The Scarecrow and Lullaby before moving on. Both side quests are in the Fallen Village, both reward excellent early Ambers, and both are most naturally done during your first pass through Chapter 3. You can return later, but picking them up now saves a trip.
    • Grab the Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade beside the well. When the path splits near a wooden gate with a Grenadier, go the other way. The chest beside the well holds a Flask upgrade that most players miss because the Grenadier draws their attention to the right.
    • Use the Volatile End Amber for the Iron Marshall fight. If you pick it up during the Marketplace area, equip it before reaching the boss. The explosion proc on weak-point hits adds meaningful burst damage to the encounter.
    • Try the Scattershot achievement in the Fields area. Right after picking up the Blunderbuss, there’s a cluster of weaker enemies nearby. Pre-damage them with the Pistol or Fire Transmutation and take them all out with one Blunderbuss shot. See our Blunderbuss guide for the exact setup.
    • Backtrack with the Grapple after completing the chapter. The moment you have the Grapple, there are grapple points in the Battlefield, Valley of Ashes, and other earlier areas that you couldn’t reach. Go back to them. Ambers, Ferrofluid Flask upgrades, and shortcuts are hiding behind those anchor points.
    • Activate all four Lanterns. The Fallen Village is large and the four Lanterns are spread across it meaningfully. Missing one means losing a fast travel point and a respawn location for a significant stretch of the chapter.

    Valor Mortis Fallen Village FAQs

Where is the Fallen Village in Valor Mortis?

The Fallen Village is the setting for Chapter 3: Rendezvous and is located directly next to the Abandoned Church hub. Exit the Church through the door next to James, turn right, walk through the cemetery, and pass through the open space to enter the Fallen Village map.

How do I start Chapter 3 and get to the Fallen Village?

Chapter 3 starts automatically after you defeat General Lothaire and reach the Abandoned Church. James will ask you to find his comrade Louis in a nearby village. That triggers the Rendezvous quest. Follow the path from the Church door to reach the Fallen Village.

How many Lanterns are in the Fallen Village in Valor Mortis?

There are four Lanterns in the Fallen Village: Fields, Marketplace, Orchard, and Path of Fire. Activate all four to unlock fast travel to each checkpoint and ensure you have respawn coverage across the full region.

What weapons do you get in the Fallen Village?

You unlock two weapons during Chapter 3. The Rapier is found on the route from the Abandoned Church before you enter the village proper — pull it from a corpse at the end of a path to the right of James’s door. The Blunderbuss is found inside the Fallen Village Fields area, in a carriage after defeating a Volunteer enemy.

What side quests are available in the Fallen Village?

Two side quests: The Scarecrow (starts near the Fields Lantern — find a pendant and a note, return them to the scarecrow, complete the memory in the barn) and Lullaby (starts near the Marketplace Lantern — find a Toy for an empty crib using the Weathered Key). The Scarecrow rewards the Bountiful Harvest Amber. Lullaby rewards Tomorrow’s Promise.

Who is the boss in the Fallen Village in Valor Mortis?

The boss is The Iron Marshall, a heavily armoured commander who fights with a slow-swinging heavy flail. He’s found at the end of Chapter 3 after passing through the Orchard and Path of Fire Lanterns. Defeating him rewards 7,000 Catalysts and the Ultima Ratio Regum achievement.

You receive the Nephtoglobin Grapple ability, which lets you swing across gaps using glowing blue anchor points throughout the world. Louis is rescued, completing the main quest. Your next destination is the Caverns, which requires the Cave Grotto Key — get it by returning to the Abandoned Church after the boss fight.

Can you miss anything in the Fallen Village?

Nothing in the Fallen Village is permanently missable. The area is fully revisitable after the story, and all collectibles, side quests, and Ambers remain available in free-roam after you complete the game. That said, doing both side quests during your natural first pass through Chapter 3 is the most efficient approach since you’re already in the right areas.
