A Midnight Clear is an optional secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone. How to Unlock A Midnight Clear – Do Not Leave the Wedding
The quest starts automatically when Dead Man’s Party ends. You do not need to do anything to trigger it. However, it fails permanently if you leave the wedding area before completing it. It also fails if you start the next main quest, Scenes from a Marriage, before finishing it.
The moment Vlodimir leaves Geralt’s body and you regain full control, stay put. Do not fast travel. Do not ride Roach toward Oxenfurt. Deal with Shani right here, right now, before you do anything else.

Does Romancing Shani Affect Triss or Yennefer?

Step 1 – Speak to Shani and Read Her Journal Entry

- Chamomile – A flower option that also allows a romantic outcome. Not as meaningful to Shani as the rowan.
- Rowanberry Brandy – Found on a table inside the barn. An alcohol option. Leads to a funny but slightly messier evening – if you let Shani drink too much, the romantic scene can be interrupted.
- Bottle of Mead – Found on the table closest to the barn entrance. Another alcohol option with the same risk as the brandy.
Which Gift Should You Choose?
Pick the Rowan Branch. It is Shani’s favourite, it earns the most XP, and it leads to the cleanest romantic outcome. Shani takes the branch and weaves it into her hair, and the mood shifts immediately.
If you choose one of the alcohol options, the romance is still possible but you need to watch the dialogue carefully. At one point Shani will want to keep drinking – if you let her mix too much alcohol, she becomes sick and the romantic scene ends badly. To avoid this, choose the option to tell her she probably should not mix drinks when it appears.
Step 3 – Give Shani the Gift and Start the Conversation
Head into the main barn and find Shani at her table. Approach her and give her the gift. She will brighten up immediately, especially if you brought the rowan branch.
The conversation begins. Your first important dialogue choice appears here:
- “You’ve got me.” – This is the romance path. Choose this to signal to Shani that you want the night to continue.
- “You’ve got friends.” – This is the friendship path. Geralt friendzones Shani and the two toast to a good night as companions. No romance follows.

Step 4 – The Walk by the River
After the conversation in the barn, Geralt and Shani head outside for a walk by the river. There are several dialogue options during the walk, including some timed choices. The tone of your answers shapes the mood of the scene.
The most important choice during the walk is:
- “Better by a mile.” – Choose this when it appears. This keeps the romantic momentum going.
The other dialogue choices during the walk are more atmospheric than mechanical. Respond naturally – none of them lock you out of the romance as long as you do not actively push Shani away.
Step 5 – The Kiss and the Romance Scene
At a certain point during the walk, Geralt and Shani reach a large tree near the water. A timed dialogue option appears. This is the decisive moment.
- “Kiss sure didn’t sate me.” – Choose this. It triggers the full romance scene.
- Any other option at this point leads to a friendly but non-romantic conclusion to the evening.
After choosing the romance option, a cutscene plays. Geralt and Shani row a boat out onto the lake. The rest of the evening, as Dandelion might say, is best left to the imagination. The game tastefully cuts away.
Step 6 – Morning After
The scene jumps to the next morning. Geralt wakes up on the shore of the lake. Shani is nearby. The two have one final conversation together – reflective, warm, and a little bittersweet.

After this, you can now head back to Oxenfurt and The Alchemy Inn to give Olgierd Vlodimir’s letter and close out Dead Man’s Party if you have not already done so.
All Gift Outcomes – What Changes Based on Your Choice
- Rowan Branch: Shani puts the blossoms in her hair. The journal entry reads warmly. Romantic scene plays cleanly. Best outcome overall.
- Chamomile: Shani accepts it graciously. Romance is still accessible with the right dialogue. Slightly less personal than the rowan.
- Rowanberry Brandy or Mead: The evening is more playful and loose. Romance is still possible, but if Shani drinks too much the scene ends with her feeling ill instead of the romantic boat ride. Watch for the “you probably should not mix” dialogue option and use it to keep things on track.
