What Is the Hungover Trophy in AC Black Flag Resynced?

The Hungover trophy on PS5 (or achievement on Xbox and PC) is a bronze-tier reward with the description: “Wake up in a haystack.” It carries over from the original Black Flag and works the same way in Resynced.

The idea is simple. Edward is a pirate. Pirates drink. If Edward drinks enough, he passes out. When he wakes up, he’s in a haystack somewhere near the tavern — and the trophy pops the moment he regains consciousness.

It costs almost nothing to unlock and takes under two minutes once you know what to do.

When Can You First Unlock the Hungover Trophy?

The earliest you can earn this trophy is during Sequence 3. This is when Edward and the crew sail into Nassau for the first time. The Nassau tavern — the Old Avery — is the first tavern you visit in the game and it unlocks as part of the story.

If you’re already further into the game, don’t worry. There are 11 taverns scattered across the Caribbean map, and the Hungover trophy works at any of them. You don’t have to go back to Nassau if you’re already past that point in the story.

How to Wake Up in a Haystack: Step by Step

Step 1 — Find and Unlock a Tavern

Taverns are marked on your map with a dice icon. They show up when you synchronize nearby viewpoints. Nassau’s tavern unlocks automatically through the story in Sequence 3, but every other tavern in the game starts locked.

To unlock any other tavern, walk up to the bartender and interact with them. This triggers a brief bar fight — usually three to five enemies. Win the brawl, and the tavern is now open. You can then buy drinks, play board games, and get tips on Naval Convoy locations from the bartender.

Step 2 — Approach the Bar and Buy Drinks

Once inside an unlocked tavern, walk up to the bar counter. You’ll see a bottle or drinks on the counter. Interact with it to purchase a drink. Each drink costs 25 Reales. Edward will down it and his vision will start to blur slightly.

Keep buying drinks one at a time. Don’t leave the tavern between purchases. As you keep drinking, the screen gets wobblier and more distorted with each cup.

Step 3 — Buy Five Drinks

Most players need exactly five drinks to make Edward pass out. The total cost is 125 Reales. After the fifth drink, the screen goes fully dark. Edward has blacked out.

If nothing happens after five, buy one or two more. Some players have reported needing a sixth in certain taverns. Just keep going until the screen fades completely.

Step 4 — Wait for the Wake-Up

A short transition plays. Edward wakes up lying in a pile of hay or palm leaves somewhere near the tavern. The moment he stirs awake, the Hungover trophy or achievement pops on screen. That’s it — you’re done.

Edward’s vision stays blurry for roughly a minute after waking up. It doesn’t affect combat in any real way, so you can carry on exploring or fighting immediately if you need to.

Best Tavern for the Hungover Trophy: Grand Cayman

You can use any tavern to unlock Hungover, but Grand Cayman is the best choice — and here’s why.

On the western side of Grand Cayman, there’s a secret chest sitting on a clifftop ledge at coordinates (357, 298). It’s impossible to climb to normally. The only way to reach it is by drinking five cups of rum at the Grand Cayman tavern and blacking out — you wake up right next to the chest.

This means doing the Hungover trophy at Grand Cayman also unlocks a secret art piece collectible called the Yoke-Form Vessel in the same visit. That collectible is part of the art collection needed for the Dilettante trophy, which requires you to collect all art pieces and fill out the Great Inagua manor. It’s a two-for-one that saves you a return trip later.

All 11 Tavern Locations in AC Black Flag Resynced

The game has 11 taverns in total spread across the Caribbean. All of them work for the Hungover trophy. They appear on your map as a dice icon once you sync the nearest viewpoint. Here are the locations with taverns:

• Havana — Visited automatically during Sequence 2, Mission 1: Lively Havana. One of the first taverns you’ll see in the game.
• Nassau — Unlocked as part of the Sequence 3 story. The Old Avery. The earliest tavern you can freely use to unlock the Hungover trophy.
• Kingston — Unlocks by talking to the bartender and winning the brawl. Located northeast of the southern warehouse marker.
• Grand Cayman — Best option for combining Hungover with the Yoke-Form Vessel art piece chest.
• Salt Key Bank — Southwest of Nassau in the Dry Tortuga region.
• Andreas Island — Small island with a tavern and minigames.
• Crooked Island — Located in the Gabara region.

Taverns in AC Black Flag Resynced are more than just a place to get Edward drunk. Once unlocked, each one offers a few useful activities:

• Buy Naval Convoy tips — The bartender will sell you intel on nearby convoys for a small fee. This marks their location on your map, making it much easier to intercept them for loot and Reales.
• Play board games for Reales — Three different games are available across the taverns: Checkers, Nine-Man Morris, and Fanorona. Winning all three in any tavern unlocks the Grandmaster trophy. Havana is the easiest early spot for Checkers. Salt Key Bank has Nine-Man Morris. Crooked Island has Fanorona.
• Recruit crew members — Some taverns let you pick up extra crew hands for the Jackdaw.

That said, if you’re at Nassau early in the story, it’s worth just doing it immediately. It takes two minutes and costs 125 Reales. There’s no reason to leave it for later.

Does the Hungover Trophy Work at Any Tavern?

Yes. The trophy triggers at any unlocked tavern in the game. You don’t need to do it at Grand Cayman specifically. The Grand Cayman route is simply the most efficient because of the bonus art piece chest you collect when you wake up there.

If you’ve already done the Hungover trophy somewhere else and want the Yoke-Form Vessel separately, you can still get it — just drink five cups at the Grand Cayman tavern again.
