What Are Mayan Stelae in AC Black Flag Resynced?

Mayan Stelae are ancient stone pillars hidden across the Caribbean islands. Each one contains a small puzzle. You climb to the top of the pillar, press the interaction button, and a glowing white pattern appears on the ground below. Your job is to rotate and scale that pattern until it lines up with the highlighted rocks and ruins nearby. Once you get it right, a section of ground starts to glow. Walk up and dig to get your Mayan Stone.

The puzzle resets every time you approach, so there is no partial progress to save. Work piece by piece rather than rotating the whole shape at once and you will solve each one quickly.

How to Start the Mayan Mysteries Quest

The Mayan Mysteries quest kicks off during Sequence 04. James Kidd takes you to Tulum during the main mission Overrun and Outnumbered, where you see a locked door blocking the inner part of the temple. Kidd explains that you need all the Mayan Stones to open it. Your first stone is handed to you during the earlier mission This Old Cove at Great Inagua, so you start with one already in hand.

Stelae markers only show up on your map once you activate the viewpoint in that region. Always climb viewpoints first in any new area before you start hunting collectibles.

Stele 1 — Great Inagua | Coordinates: 823, 437

This is the one you cannot miss. It is completed automatically during Sequence 04, Mission 01: This Old Cove. James Kidd walks you straight to it as part of the main campaign. You get your first Mayan Stone here via a cutscene.

Stele 2 — Cape Bonavista | Coordinates: 159, 584

This stele sits right next to a fast travel point and sync viewpoint overlooking the coast where the Jackdaw is docked. Climb the pillar and line up the larger circle with the bottom pillar in the ruins, then scale the pattern down until it fits. The stone is physically present during the prologue but you cannot interact with it until after the Mayan Mysteries quest starts. Come back after Sequence 04 to collect it.

Stele 3 — Matanzas | Coordinates: 311, 617

Head to Matanzas and find the stele pillar in the wooded area past the warehouse. Climb it and align the large circle with the tree on the left side of the ruins. The singular large circle should match the base of the tree. Scale it to fit and the buried stone location will appear below.

Stele 4 — Cat Island | Coordinates: 703, 670

The stele is among the ruins on Cat Island. This is the area where the campaign first started. From the fast travel point, head back toward the village and climb the ledges — there is also a Treasure Map just before the clearing with the pillar. Stand on the pillar, align the large circle with the rock on the left, and scale it down until it fits the formation below.

Stele 5 — Tortuga | Coordinates: 846, 352

Find the stele on the western part of Tortuga’s map. Sync the viewpoint first so the marker appears. The puzzle here uses shapes matching the surrounding fallen stone debris.

Stele 6 — Pinos Isle, Courtyard | Coordinates: 311, 454

Pinos Isle has two stelae — collect both before you leave. This first one is in the courtyard. Climb the wall you see when you first enter the island. The stele is on top of it. In the puzzle, the five circles represent the pillars around you and the rectangle represents a fallen block nearby.

Stele 7 — Pinos Isle, Beach | Coordinates: 303, 452

The second Pinos Isle stele is on the western part of the island near the viewpoint, down by the beach. The two circles in the puzzle represent nearby stones, and the rectangle represents a fallen block on the sand. Both stelae on this island are very close together so grab them both in one visit.

Stele 8 — Sacrifice Island | Coordinates: 18, 548

This stele is right in front of the southern viewpoint on Sacrifice Island. Worth noting that this location did not exist in the original 2013 game — it is a new addition in the Resynced remake. It replaces the second Santanillas stele from the original. Easy to spot once you sync the viewpoint.

Stele 9 — Tulum | Coordinates: 30, 382

The Tulum stele is on the western side of the map, in front of a ruin. The northern section of Tulum only becomes fully accessible after Sequence 04, Mission 03: The Sage’s Buried Secret. If you have already done our Mayan Temple puzzle guide for The Sage’s Buried Secret, you will know this area well.

Stele 10 — Santanillas | Coordinates: 187, 221

Head to Santanillas and locate the pillar at the stele waypoint. Climb it and solve the standard alignment puzzle. In the original 2013 game there were two stelae at Santanillas. In Resynced, one of them has been moved to Sacrifice Island (Stele 8 above), so only one remains here. Veteran players should not rely on old memory for this region.

Stele 11 — Misteriosa, Ruins Side | Coordinates: 273, 175

Misteriosa has two stelae — do not leave until you have both. The first is located on the sides of the ruins that overlook the island. Climb to the top of the pillar. The puzzle has two circles for the blocks jutting out and two inverted L-shapes for the nearby columns.

Stele 12 — Misteriosa, Southwest Beach | Coordinates: 265, 171

The second Misteriosa stele is at the back of the ruins on the southwest side of the island. There is also a Treasure Map nearby so pick that up too. Clear the area before solving the puzzle — the soldier near this beach location is easy to miss until he has already alerted nearby enemies.

Stele 13 — New Bone | Coordinates: 400, 92

New Bone is a British-controlled island, so you need to eliminate a few ships and soldiers before you can dock. The stele is in the forest on the eastern side of the island. The officer standing right next to the stele also carries a warehouse key you can steal. Handle him first if you are going for full completion. You can bypass the northwest soldiers by hugging the northern border of the island rather than cutting through the middle.

Stele 14 — Isla Providencia, West | Coordinates: 476, 16

Isla Providencia only becomes accessible during or after Sequence 08, Mission 03: Marooned. Both stelae here are close to the northernmost viewpoint, so sync it first and you will spot both markers easily. This first one is below the western viewpoint.

Stele 15 — Isla Providencia, Ruins | Coordinates: 487, 33

The second Isla Providencia stele is on top of the ruins below the viewpoint. It is very close to Stele 14. Collect both before sailing away. The puzzle shapes match the stone columns and blocks directly surrounding each pillar.

Stele 16 — Long Bay | Coordinates: 502, 216

Long Bay is only reachable during or after Sequence 10, Mission 03: The Observatory. The final stele sits in the southern corner of Long Bay, between the large square-shaped stone blocks, just off to the side of the Observatory entrance. Solve the puzzle here and you have all 16 Mayan Stones.

What Do You Get for All 16 Mayan Stelae?

Once you have collected all 16 Mayan Stones, a quest marker appears at Tulum in the Conttoyor region on the west side of the map, labeled Mayan Outfit. Head there and use the stones to unlock the temple door. There is a short platforming section inside before you reach the rewards.

You receive two things:

  • Mayan Outfit — A legendary cosmetic outfit. In the Resynced remake, outfits are purely visual and carry no gameplay effects on their own.
  • Yax Tun Pendant — A legendary trinket that absorbs all incoming gunshots when equipped. This is the real reward. Being bullet-immune changes combat entirely, especially during boarding sequences where enemy pistols are a constant threat.

In the original 2013 game, the Mayan Outfit itself provided the bullet-deflection perk. In Resynced, that power has been moved to the pendant so you can enjoy the protection without wearing the costume. Tips for Finding All Mayan Stelae Faster

Activate viewpoints first. Mayan Stone markers only appear on your map after you sync the viewpoint in that region. Skipping viewpoints means hunting blind. This pairs with our fast travel guide since unlocking viewpoints also opens up fast travel points.

Hover over map icons. Once a location is discovered, hovering over it in the map shows whether it contains a Mayan Stele. Use this to plan your sailing route before you leave port.

Two stelae mean two searches. Misteriosa (273, 175 and 265, 171), Pinos Isle (311, 454 and 303, 452), and Isla Providencia (476, 16 and 487, 33) each have two stelae. Do not leave any of these islands until you have grabbed both.

Some islands are gated. Cape Bonavista’s stele cannot be collected during the prologue. Isla Providencia is locked until Sequence 08 and Long Bay until Sequence 10. Do not stress about these — they will become available as you progress the story.

Clear enemies before puzzling. On contested islands like New Bone (400, 92), soldiers near a stele can interrupt you mid-puzzle. Clear the immediate area first.

Pick up the stone after solving. The puzzle completion and the stone collection are two separate interactions. After the ground glows, you still need to walk up and interact again to actually dig up the Mayan Stone. A few players miss this step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Mayan Stelae are there in AC Black Flag Resynced?

There are 16 Mayan Stelae in total. They are spread across the Caribbean and you need to solve the puzzle at each one to collect a Mayan Stone. The first stone is given to you automatically during the main story.

What do you get for collecting all 16 Mayan Stones?

You receive the Mayan Outfit and the Yax Tun Pendant. The pendant is the important reward — it makes Edward immune to incoming gunfire when equipped. The outfit is cosmetic only in the Resynced remake.

Can I start collecting Mayan Stelae right away?

No. You need to complete Sequence 04, specifically the mission This Old Cove, before you can interact with any stele. Some stelae are also locked behind later story sequences — Isla Providencia requires Sequence 08 and Long Bay (502, 216) requires Sequence 10.

Why are no Mayan Stelae showing on my map?

Stele markers only appear after you activate the viewpoint in that region. Sync every viewpoint you find and the markers will show up automatically on the map when you zoom in close.

Where do I go after collecting all 16 Mayan Stones?

Head to Tulum in the Conttoyor region. Look for the Mayan Outfit quest marker on the west side of the map. Enter the temple door, complete the short climbing section inside, and claim your Mayan Outfit and Yax Tun Pendant. See our forts guide and Owned trophy guide for more things to tick off after this.

Is the Mayan Outfit different in Resynced compared to the original game?

Yes. In the original Black Flag, wearing the Mayan Outfit itself deflected bullets. In Resynced, outfits are purely cosmetic. The bullet protection has been moved to the Yax Tun Pendant, which means you can get the combat benefit without having to wear the outfit.

Are any Mayan Stelae locations different in Resynced versus the original Black Flag?

Yes — one stele has moved. In the original 2013 game there were two stelae at Santanillas. In Resynced, one of them has been relocated to Sacrifice Island (18, 548), which is a brand new collectible location in the remake. Everything else is in roughly the same area, though exact coordinates have shifted slightly across the whole map.
