Where Is Matanzas in AC Black Flag Resynced?

Matanzas is located at map coordinates 302, 620 in the Dry Tortuga region, not far from Havana. It’s accessible once you have the Jackdaw and is one of the closer islands to the game’s early-access zones. The island has a single Viewpoint — sync it first before going after any collectibles, as it pins the chests, secrets, and stelae to your map automatically.

Where Is the Matanzas Mayan Stelae?

The stelae is in the southeastern part of Matanzas, in the wooded area past the warehouse. It sits to the left of a waterfall. If you’re approaching from the warehouse area, head southeast and follow the terrain down toward the waterfall. The pillar is just to the left of it. The nearby Tortuga Treasure Map chest is at 312, 617, essentially the same spot — if you’ve got that map, you’ll be digging up two rewards within a few steps of each other.

Deal With the Enemies First

Multiple sources confirm the area around the Matanzas stelae is filled with enemies. Trying to climb the pillar and concentrate on the puzzle while soldiers are actively patrolling nearby is a recipe for getting interrupted mid-solve. You have two options:

• Clear them out — Fight or stealth assassinate the guards in the southeast before climbing the pillar. This is the cleaner approach and lets you solve the puzzle without any pressure.
• Stay hidden — If you want to avoid combat entirely, move through the area using the tall grass and bushes to reach the stelae without triggering anyone. This is slower but avoids any risk.

Clearing the enemies is usually the better call since you’ll want a clean run at the dig site immediately after the puzzle completes.

How to Solve the Matanzas Mayan Stelae Puzzle

Once the area is clear, climb to the top of the stelae pillar and press the interaction button (Triangle on PS / Y on Xbox) to start the puzzle. A glowing white overlay appears on the ground below. Here’s the solution:

• Align the large circle with the tree on the left side of the ruins below you.
• Adjust the scale and rotation until all the overlay shapes lock correctly over the highlighted objects on the ground.
• The GameSpot guide notes the singular large circle should match the base of the tree — use that as your anchor point and work the smaller shapes around it.
• Once every piece sits inside the correct circle markers, the puzzle completes automatically.

After solving, a green marker appears on the ground nearby. Climb down and press the dig button to collect the Matanzas Mayan Stone. Solving the puzzle and picking up the stone are always two separate steps — don’t skip the dig.

Grab the Tortuga Treasure Map Chest While You’re Here

This is one of the more convenient double-ups in the game. The Tortuga Treasure Map — picked up from a skeleton on the eastern shoreline of Tortuga at 851, 352 — points you to a buried chest at 312, 617 in Matanzas. That dig site sits in the southeastern corner of the island, to the left of the Mayan Stelae beside the waterfall. Other Matanzas Collectibles Worth Grabbing

Matanzas has a handful of other collectibles tied to the same area, so it’s worth clearing the whole island in one trip:

• Warehouse Painting (“Merry Company”) — Locked inside the island’s warehouse. You need the warehouse key, which is found on a corpse near the crocodile. Kill the croc, grab the key from the nearby body, then return to the warehouse to unlock the door and pick up the painting.
• Crocodile hunt — The huntable animal on Matanzas. Since the warehouse key is right next to it, hunting the crocodile and grabbing the key is a natural two-for-one.
• Chest (manor) — Inside the manor building on the island.
• Chest (watchtower) — Near the watchtower area.
• Underwater Chest — Accessible by diving near the island.
• Secret (letter “On Leaving Home”) — On the beach area.
• Secret (Bronze Wheel) — Another secret collectible on the island.
