What Are Channels in Aion 2?
In Aion 2, “channel” means two different things, and a lot of players get confused between them. It’s worth clearing that up before anything else.
- Chat channels — the different lines of communication in the chat box. Things like Common chat, Faction chat, Party, Legion, Whisper, and so on. You switch between these to control who you’re talking to.
- Area channels — separate copies of the same map zone. When a zone gets crowded, the game splits it into multiple versions. You and a friend might be on the same server, in the same zone, but in different area channels — so you can’t see each other.
Both are called “channels” by players, but they work completely differently. This guide covers both.

How to Change Chat Channels in Aion 2
There are two quick ways to switch between chat channels.
Method 1: Using ALT + Click
- Press Enter to open the chat box
- Hold ALT on your keyboard
- Move your cursor to the channel name displayed next to the text input field
- Click it — a pop-up window appears showing all available channels
- Click the channel you want to switch to
That’s it. Whatever you type next will go out on that channel. The name next to the text box always shows which channel you’re currently active on.
Method 2: Type the Shortcut + Space
This is faster once you learn the shortcuts. Type the command into the chat box and press Space — you’ll instantly switch to that channel.
- /s — Common (Normal chat, seen by nearby players within ~60m)
- /t — Faction (your whole faction on the server; requires Level 45)
- /w — Whisper (type the player name after)
- /h — Shout (nearby players within ~110m)
- /p — Party
- /f — Force
- /l — Legion
- /d — Dungeon
- /e — Event
- /r — Reply to the last whisper you received
Just type the shortcut and hit Space, and you’re on that channel. Quick and simple once it becomes muscle memory.
All Aion 2 Chat Channel Types Explained
Here’s a breakdown of every chat channel in Aion 2 and who can see your messages:
- Common (/s) — Players near you in the world, roughly within 60m. The default chat for general conversation while questing.
- Faction (/t) — Your whole faction on your current server. Good for announcements or finding help. Requires Level 45 to use — NCSoft added this restriction to cut down on spam.
- Event (/e) — Everyone in the same event area. If you’re in the Abyss Rift Zone, it also lets you communicate with allies on your side.
- Whisper (/w) — A private message to one specific player. Use /r to reply to the last whisper you received.
- Shout (/h) — Reaches players within about 110m around you. Wider range than Common.
- Party (/p) — Only your current party members. Only appears if you’re in a party.
- Force (/f) — Your force group only. Use /a to send an alert message to your whole force.
- Legion (/l) — Your legion members only. Only visible if you’ve joined a legion.
- Dungeon (/d) — The dungeon waiting room channel. Only active when you’re in or queued for a dungeon.
Important: Elyos and Asmodians cannot read each other’s chat in the open world — messages from the opposing faction appear as unreadable text. The only exceptions are shared instanced content like Expeditions, Transcendence, and Sanctuary, where cross-faction party, force, and dungeon chat is allowed.

How to Check Chat History and Filter Channels
Every active channel keeps a log of messages from your current session. To view them:
- Open the chat window
- Click the icon in the chat area — this opens a full chat history window
- Scroll through to read past messages from your session
You can also filter what appears in each chat tab. Click the gear icon at the top of the chat window to open Chat Settings. From there you can:
- Filter which message types show up in each tab
- Turn on timestamps so messages show when they were sent
- Toggle Auto-Translate for messages in other languages
- Manage your Blocked List (players you’ve muted)
Each tab keeps its own filter settings, so you could have one tab showing only party and dungeon chat, and another for faction and common. Very useful on busy servers.
Area Channels in Aion 2: Why You Can’t See Your Friend
This is probably the most common confusion new players run into. You’re both on the same server, the map shows you in the same spot — but you can’t see each other. What’s going on?
Aion 2 splits busy zones into multiple copies of the same area. Think of them as parallel versions of the map. When a zone gets crowded, the game automatically puts players into different area channels to prevent lag and overcrowding. You and your friend ended up in different copies of the same zone.
How to Follow a Friend Into Their Area Channel
- Target your friend (click their name in the party window or friend list)
- Open the menu on their target frame
- Select Follow Channel
- You’ll be moved into their version of the zone
This doesn’t always work. If your friend is inside an instanced quest, you can’t follow them — instanced content is separate and Follow Channel won’t apply. In PvP areas like the Abyss, the game may also automatically reassign you to a different area channel to keep faction populations balanced.
Can You Manually Change Area Channels in Aion 2?
No — and this catches a lot of returning players off guard. In Aion Classic, you could open the Game Menu, go to Support, and manually select a channel. That option doesn’t exist in Aion 2.
Right now, the only way to end up in a specific area channel is to use the Follow Channel option from a friend’s target frame. Beyond that, the game handles area channel assignment automatically based on zone population. NCSoft may add manual channel switching in a future update, but as of October 2026, it’s not in the game.
If you’re trying to farm resource nodes in a crowded area, your best move is to keep rotating between spawn locations rather than waiting at a contested node for it to respawn.
Chat Channel Communication Rules to Know
A few quick rules that trip people up:
- You can only see channels you’re eligible for. No party = no Party channel. No legion = no Legion channel. They simply don’t appear in the selector until you’re in one.
- Faction and server limit your reach. Most channels only reach players on your own server within your own faction. You can’t use Common or Faction chat to reach enemy players or players on other servers.
- Whisper works across servers, but not between different server groups.
- Inside a Spacetime Rift, cross-faction communication becomes possible — the usual restrictions don’t fully apply when you’ve crossed into enemy territory. Learn more about what you can do over there in our Spacetime Rift Events guide.
- Faction chat requires Level 45 — this was added as an anti-spam measure after global launch.
