Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: A World Without Gold Walkthrough

A World Without Gold walkthrough for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced — every mission, unlock requirement, how to avoid the progression bug, and all rewards explained.

The A World Without Gold walkthrough for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced covers all eight missions in the brand new endgame chapter exclusive to this remake. This questline wasn’t in the original 2013 game at all. It unlocks after Sequence 11, introduces a new antagonist named Robert Maynard, and ties directly into the new Naval Officer system and a major Jackdaw upgrade. It’s the biggest single addition in the whole remake — and it has some hidden unlock requirements that will stall your progress if you don’t know about them. This guide walks through every mission in order so you don’t get stuck.

TL;DR — A World Without Gold at a Glance

  • Unlocks after completing Sequence 11: Everything Is Permitted

  • Complete this chapter before starting Sequence 12 for the best story flow

What Is A World Without Gold?

A World Without Gold is a brand new eight-mission story chapter exclusive to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. It was not part of the original 2013 release. The chapter revolves around tracking down Maynard and expands Edward’s adventure with an entirely new sequence. Tonally it sits between friendship and greed — Edward is forced to weigh gold against loyalty as the stakes escalate. The new content is designed to be played before you begin Sequence 12, ideally, as it contains fresh story content and wraps up a lot of threads that the original game left hanging.

It’s not a side quest. It’s a full narrative chapter with its own antagonist, multiple set pieces, a naval armada battle, and a one-on-one duel at the end. If you want to see everything new in Resynced before finishing the main story, do this chapter first. For a full picture of every addition in the remake, see our all new content guide for Black Flag Resynced.

How to Unlock A World Without Gold

To begin the A World Without Gold questline, you’ll need to complete Sequence 11: Everything Is Permitted of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. Once you exit the Assassin’s Compound with Anne after that sequence, head to the Great Inagua tavern. The first quest marker — That Bastard Maynard — will be waiting near the docks. Walk up and interact with it to begin.

You also need to have Lucy Baldwin and The Padre already recruited before certain missions in the chapter will open up. If you haven’t done their first two officer missions yet, do those before you start this questline. It’ll save a lot of backtracking. Our ship upgrade guide covers the abilities each officer unlocks for the Jackdaw.

All 8 Missions — Full Walkthrough

Mission 1 — That Bastard Maynard

Mission 1 That Bastard Maynard Location
Mission 1 That Bastard Maynard Location

Location: Great Inagua docks tavern, after exiting the Assassin’s Compound in Sequence 11.

Head to the objective marker near the tavern and interact with it to trigger the opening cutscene. Maynard is introduced as a pirate hunter who has been targeting Edward’s crew. The mission establishes the threat and sets up the chapter’s central conflict. After the cutscene ends, the next mission becomes available immediately.

Mission 2 — Not a Real Captain At All

Mission 2 Not a Real Captain At All
Mission 2 Not a Real Captain At All

Location: Great Inagua.

This mission sends Edward after intelligence on Maynard’s operation. Follow the objective markers through Great Inagua, gathering information and clearing enemies as needed. After the mission’s cutscene, two quests unlock simultaneously: What the Bloody Hell and This Is A Good Beginning. You can tackle them in either order.

Known Progression Bug Warning: After completing this mission, two quests become available, and you can tackle either one first. During my own playthrough, however, the second mission disappeared completely after the first cutscene, preventing me from progressing through the Maynard questline. If this happens to you, the fix is simple — fast travel away from Great Inagua to any other location and then fast travel back. The missing mission marker reappears on return. Don’t reload an older save — just fast travel out and back.

Mission 3 — What the Bloody Hell

Mission 3 What the Bloody Hell
Mission 3 What the Bloody Hell

Location: On the water near Great Inagua.

This is a naval mission. Sail to the objective marker and engage Maynard’s advance ships. These aren’t Legendary Ship tier enemies, but they hit harder than standard vessels. Use broadsides to weaken them and board when their health is low to restore the Jackdaw’s hull. Stick to the same strategy as before by pulling smaller ships away from the group first and boarding them whenever you need to restore the Jackdaw’s health. Sink all enemy ships to complete the mission. Then move on to This Is A Good Beginning if you haven’t already.

Mission 4 — This Is A Good Beginning

Mission 4 its a start
Mission 4 its a start

Location: Great Inagua Manor.

Fast travel back to your Manor in Great Inagua and begin the mission by discussing the Maynard threat. After the cutscene, you’ll need to speak with your officers. This is a quieter planning mission that splits into three short segments:

  • Head downstairs to find Abel Galvao beside several rum crates. Help him carry them before fighting the enemies that belong to your crew.
  • Next, head behind the Manor and find Lucy. Follow her and shoot the marked pistol targets while she and Edward discuss Maynard’s armada.
  • Finally, head down to the beach and meet Deadman before returning to the Manor for the closing cutscene.

After this mission, two more quests unlock in parallel: Not Natural Allies and All I Want To Do Is Chat. Both must be completed before the next main mission opens.

Mandatory Officer Quests — The One with the Gun and Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage

Before Not Natural Allies and All I Want To Do Is Chat will unlock properly, you need to have completed the first two officer quests for both Lucy Baldwin and The Padre. These are named The One with the Gun (Lucy’s second quest) and Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage (Padre’s second quest).

Don’t rush past the Naval Officer side quests thinking they’re optional. “The One with the Gun” and “Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage” are hard requirements for continuing the main questline chain. If these haven’t been done, finish them now before continuing. Prioritize the two Naval Officer quests as early as possible after finishing This Is A Good Beginning so you don’t have to backtrack when the next missions unlock.

Mission 5 — Not Natural Allies

Mission 5 Not Natural Allies
Mission 5 Not Natural Allies

Location: At sea, objective marker east of Great Inagua.

Another naval engagement. Maynard has called in allied ships to support his operation. This fight involves more ships than the previous naval mission and comes in two waves. Pull ships away from the main group one at a time using chain shots from your bow chasers, then use broadside fire and mortars to finish them. Board where possible to top up the Jackdaw’s health. Sink everything to end the mission.

Mission 6 — All I Want To Do Is Chat (I Just Want to Talk)

I Just Want to Talk
I Just Want to Talk

Location: Marked objective at sea.

This is the mission that introduces Tobias “Deadman” Smith as the third Naval Officer. Sail to the objective marker and engage with Deadman’s ship. After a cutscene Edward convinces him to join. You’ll unlock the officer, Tobias Smith, via this questline when you complete I Just Want to Talk as well as his upgrade. Once he’s aboard, his Extra Salvo ability activates — giving the Jackdaw a second broadside volley with each attack. This is a significant DPS boost that makes the remaining naval fights in the chapter easier. Deadman’s personal questline, No Box Dark Enough, also unlocks back at Great Inagua after this mission — see below for details.

Mission 7 — A Cockalorum

A Cockalorum
A Cockalorum

Location: Tortuga.

Both I Just Want To Talk and Not Our Natural Allies unlock simultaneously, so you can tackle them in either order. You need both finished before A Cockalorum opens up. Once both are done, sail to Tortuga and dock at the marked location. This is a land infiltration mission inside Maynard’s villa.

Follow Lucy through the island until you reach Maynard’s heavily guarded villa. Eliminate the enemies however you prefer before searching the house. Inside the villa, you need to locate three clues to Maynard’s plans:

  • His portrait — upstairs in the villa
  • The jaguar statue — on the ground floor
  • A letter — upstairs on a barrel

After the cutscene, escape back to the Jackdaw. Don’t waste time fighting every guard you see. Simply eliminate anyone blocking your path and keep running. Once aboard the Jackdaw, sail away from Tortuga. Several enemy ships will ambush you, so sink them all to finish the mission. Use smoke bombs and the Rope Dart to create space while escaping if guards are boxing you in. Once you’re back on the Jackdaw and the ambush ships are sunk, the final mission unlocks.

Mission 8 — A World Without Gold (Final Mission)

A World Without Gold
A World Without Gold

Location: Port Royal, near Kingston.

This is the closing mission of the entire chapter. Travel to Port Royal near Kingston to begin the final mission. Once you arrive, you’ll receive three separate objectives that can be completed in any order:

  • Destroy the cannons alongside Deadman
  • Sabotage the gunpowder with Lucy
  • Free the prisoners with the Padre

Each segment plays out with one of your officers at your side. The cannon destruction is the most combat-heavy of the three — use the swivel gun to take out cannon emplacements from a distance before engaging guards up close. The gunpowder sabotage is the most stealth-oriented — follow Lucy and use the new crouch mechanics and visibility meter to stay hidden through the storage area. Freeing the prisoners is the quickest — clear the guards around the cells and interact with the locks.

Once all three objectives are complete:

  • Head aboard Maynard’s ship. Plant charges on the explosives before searching for his treasure. Following the objective marker leads into a large group of enemies, so clear them out before returning to the Jackdaw.
  • A massive naval battle against Maynard’s Armada follows. This is the hardest naval fight in the chapter. Use the same approach as the earlier battles — pull ships away from the group with chain shots, weaken them, and board to restore the Jackdaw’s health. Deadman’s Extra Salvo makes a big difference here.
  • Once the armada is cleared, with the ship disabled, board it and defeat Maynard in the final duel. After he’s beaten, the concluding cutscene plays, bringing both the mission and the entire A World Without Gold questline to an end.

The duel with Maynard is a straight sword fight. He’s aggressive but readable — perfect parries and counter-attacks chain into heavy strikes. Use smoke bombs if he creates distance and recovers. Two or three successful parry chains will finish him.

Deadman’s Personal Questline — No Box Dark Enough

After completing I Just Want to Talk and recruiting Deadman, his separate personal questline No Box Dark Enough unlocks at Great Inagua. This is distinct from the main A World Without Gold chain and can be completed either during or after the chapter’s remaining missions. If you then complete No Box Dark Enough and then his subsequent quests, you’ll unlock a new mortar type for the Jackdaw which fires a continuous stream. This is the Deadman’s Cohort Mortar — a tighter, more sustained mortar pattern ideal for hitting clustered ships. It’s worth finishing before you tackle the Legendary Ships. See our Legendary Ships guide for how it fits into those fights.

A World Without Gold Rewards

Completing the full questline earns:

  • Tobias “Deadman” Smith recruited as the third Naval Officer
  • Extra Salvo ability for the Jackdaw — fires a second broadside volley with every attack
  • Deadman’s Cohort Mortar — unlocked via his personal questline No Box Dark Enough
  • HMS Ipswich encounter — the new Legendary Ship boss that appears during the final naval battle
  • Completing the full chapter also contributes toward the All Hands on Deck trophy and achievement, which requires all five officers on board

You’ll also unlock the A World Without Gold story trophy/achievement for finishing the chapter, and the experience contributes to overall completion percentage for the Platinum.

Should You Do A World Without Gold Before Sequence 12?

Yes — always do it first. Treat the A World Without Gold questline as an unofficial Sequence, located between 11 and 12, to make the most of the new lore and gameplay benefits. Deadman’s Extra Salvo and the Cohort Mortar both make the final missions of Sequence 12 easier. The story also lands better emotionally when played before the original ending rather than after it. There’s no penalty for doing Sequence 12 first, but doing A World Without Gold first is the intended experience and gives you the strongest setup for the game’s conclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start A World Without Gold in AC Black Flag Resynced?

Complete Sequence 11: Everything Is Permitted, then exit the Assassin’s Compound with Anne. Head to the Great Inagua tavern and look for the That Bastard Maynard quest marker near the docks. Interact with it to begin the questline. It won’t appear before Sequence 11 is finished.

How many missions are in A World Without Gold?

There are eight missions in total: That Bastard Maynard, Not a Real Captain At All, What the Bloody Hell, This Is A Good Beginning, Not Natural Allies, All I Want To Do Is Chat, A Cockalorum, and the final mission A World Without Gold. Some missions unlock in parallel and can be done in either order.

Why is my A World Without Gold quest stuck or not progressing?

There is a known progression bug that can cause the second mission to disappear after the first cutscene in Not a Real Captain At All. The fix is to fast travel away from Great Inagua and then fast travel back. The missing mission marker reappears on return. Don’t reload a save — just fast travel out and back.

Do you need to complete officer quests to finish A World Without Gold?

Yes. The One with the Gun (Lucy’s second officer quest) and Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage (the Padre’s second officer quest) are mandatory requirements to unlock later missions in the A World Without Gold chain. Complete both before you need them so you don’t have to stop and backtrack mid-chapter.

Who is Tobias Deadman Smith in AC Black Flag Resynced?

Tobias “Deadman” Smith is the third new Naval Officer added exclusively to Black Flag Resynced. He’s recruited during the A World Without Gold mission All I Want To Do Is Chat. His first ability, Extra Salvo, fires a second broadside volley with every attack. His full personal questline No Box Dark Enough then unlocks the Cohort Mortar upgrade for the Jackdaw.

What is the final boss in A World Without Gold?

The final boss is Robert Maynard, fought in a one-on-one sword duel after boarding his ship at Port Royal. Before the duel, you survive a large naval battle against his armada. The duel itself ends the chapter — beat Maynard with parries and counter-attacks to trigger the closing cutscene.

Should you do A World Without Gold before or after Sequence 12?

Always before Sequence 12. The chapter is designed to sit between Sequences 11 and 12 and wraps up story threads that the original game left hanging. Finishing it first also gives you Deadman’s Extra Salvo and Cohort Mortar abilities, which make the final Sequence missions easier.
