The Officer Quests in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced are brand new questlines exclusive to this remake. None of them existed in the original 2013 game. Each one recruits a new specialist for the Jackdaw’s crew and unlocks a powerful ship ability in return. There are three recruitable officers — Lucy Baldwin, The Padre (Abel Galvão), and Tobias “Deadman” Smith — and this walkthrough covers every mission, location, requirement, and reward across all three questlines so you don’t miss anything.
TL;DR — Officer Quests Quick Reference
- All Officer Quests unlock after completing Sequence 4: This Old Cove (except Deadman, who needs Sequence 11)
- Lucy Baldwin — found at Salt Key Bank (465, 608) — 4 quests — unlocks Perfect Brace and Baldwin’s Golden Pistols
- The Padre — found at Caracol (919, 339) — 4 quests — unlocks Ram Dash and Small Goblet trinket
- Tobias “Deadman” Smith — recruited via A World Without Gold after Sequence 11 — unlocks Extra Salvo and Cohort Mortar
- You only need the first two quests of each questline to recruit the officer and unlock their ability — the rest are bonus story and rewards
- Lucy and Padre must both be recruited before Deadman’s formal recruitment mission becomes accessible
- Recruiting all three (plus Adéwalé and Anne Bonny who join automatically) unlocks the All Hands on Deck trophy and achievement
- Do Lucy and Padre as soon as Sequence 4 ends — their abilities change how the whole mid-game plays out
What Are Officer Quests in AC Black Flag Resynced?
Officer Quests are dedicated questlines that let Edward recruit specialists aboard the Jackdaw. Each officer fills a unique role and gives the ship an active combat ability that wasn’t available in the original game. The three new officers — Lucy Baldwin as Shipwright, The Padre as Master-at-Arms, and Deadman as Master Gunner — are entirely new characters created for Resynced. Adéwalé and Anne Bonny also appear as Quartermasters, but they join automatically through the main story with no questlines attached.
You don’t need to complete a full questline to recruit an officer and unlock their ability. The first two quests of each line are enough to bring them aboard. The remaining quests are bonus story content with extra rewards — worth doing, but not required to get the ability. For a full picture of every addition exclusive to Resynced, see our all new content guide.
When Do Officer Quests Unlock?
Officer Quests become available after you complete This Old Cove, the first main mission in Sequence 4. This is when Edward claims Great Inagua as his hideout. Until that mission is finished, no officer markers appear anywhere on the map — there is no point searching for them earlier. Once This Old Cove is done, Lucy Baldwin’s and The Padre’s questlines appear simultaneously. Deadman’s questline is tied to the A World Without Gold chapter and only opens after completing Sequence 11.
Lucy Baldwin — Shipwright Questline
Lucy Baldwin serves as the Jackdaw’s Shipwright. Her key ability is Perfect Brace — brace the Jackdaw right before an enemy attack lands and she massively cuts the incoming damage. There is no cooldown on this. It scales with your timing rather than with ship upgrades and remains the best survival tool in the game from Sequence 4 all the way through the Legendary Ships. Her full questline also rewards Baldwin’s Golden Pistols — a solid pair of pistols with Range 26 and Draw Speed 1.00.
Quest 1 — A Proper Shipwright
Unlock: Complete Sequence 4: This Old Cove.
Location: Salt Key Bank, Dry Tortuga region (465, 608)
After This Old Cove, Adéwalé mentions Lucy Baldwin — a shipwright currently imprisoned near Salt Key Bank. Sail there and look for the quest marker. Rather than heading onto the island, swim over to the nearby prison ship and climb aboard. Quietly eliminate the guards on deck or fight through them head-on — either approach works. Head into the hold and interact with Lucy’s cell door to free her. Once out, a British fleet appears and forces a naval engagement. Sink the pursuing ships — they’re not particularly tough at this point — and Lucy agrees to join the Jackdaw after a drink in Great Inagua. This completes her first quest and puts her on the roster, though Perfect Brace doesn’t unlock until the second quest.
Quest 2 — The One with the Gun

Unlock: Complete A Proper Shipwright.
Location: Great Inagua tavern
Meet Lucy at the Great Inagua tavern. She tells Edward about her inheritance — her grandfather’s golden pistols — that her father stole after falsely accusing her of murder. Edward agrees to help her retrieve it. Follow the objective markers to track down Lucy’s father and the pistols. After dealing with him and his men in a combat encounter, a cutscene plays where Lucy’s father confronts her directly — it ends with him being shot. After this quest, Lucy officially joins as Shipwright and Perfect Brace unlocks for the Jackdaw. This is the point where her ability becomes active. The next two quests are bonus story content.
Quest 3 — Plantain!

Unlock: Complete The One with the Gun.
Location: Great Inagua tavern
A short and lighthearted mission. Meet Lucy at the Great Inagua tavern. After a conversation about plantain, walk with her toward Edward’s manor while carrying a crate of food. As you approach the manor, Lucy challenges Edward to a race. You don’t need to win — the outcome doesn’t affect the quest, though it slightly changes a line of dialogue. Once the cutscene after the race ends, the quest is complete. Lucy gives Edward her grandfather’s golden pistols during this mission’s closing cutscene — Baldwin’s Golden Pistols are yours from here.
Quest 4 — Big Wig

Unlock: Complete Plantain!
Location: North side of Havana
Lucy is now in Havana. Meet her on the north side of the city. She explains that her grandfather once owned a cabin north of town and suspects the Barrister — the corrupt official who helped her father steal the inheritance — may be hiding the remaining gold there. Make your way to the marked beach north of Havana where the Barrister and his men are waiting. Defeat every enemy. After clearing the area, look east for a spade sticking out of the ground — dig it up to find the buried treasure. This concludes Lucy’s full questline. Inside the cabin beforehand you can also examine two documents: Baldwin’s will upstairs on the table and the Barrister’s letter downstairs on another table. Leave Black Island when you’re done to complete the quest.
The Padre (Abel Galvão) — Master-at-Arms Questline
The Padre is a former pirate who has left his violent past behind to build a peaceful community — until events drag him back into the fight. He serves as the Jackdaw’s Master-at-Arms, which means he physically joins Edward during boarding actions and fort sieges, fighting alongside the crew on deck. His main ability is Ram Dash (L1+R1 on PS5 / LB+RB on Xbox) — it surges the Jackdaw forward and deals enormous impact damage, enough to sink smaller ships in a single hit. You recharge Ram Dash by dealing weapon damage to enemies. His full questline also rewards the Small Goblet trinket, which increases healing from all food, drink, and remedies.
Quest 1 — A Second Chance

Unlock: Complete Sequence 4: This Old Cove.
Location: Caracol, southeast of Great Inagua (919, 339) / (446, 620 on some map displays)
Sail to Caracol, a small island on the southeast side of the map. You’ll find the Padre a few steps inland from the shore, roasting a pig over a fire. Walk up and trigger the opening cutscene. The Padre is reluctant — he’s left the life of violence behind. After the cutscene, he asks you to let three villagers know the meal is ready. All three sit under clear green quest markers on the island. Two of them just have a short conversation with Edward. The third, Dinah Calverley, asks you to bring her some food from the fire. Do so and return to the Padre to complete the quest. He’s not ready to join yet — but he’s on your radar.
Quest 2 — Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage

Unlock: Complete A Second Chance.
Location: Cumberland Bay (648, 348)
Sail to Cumberland Bay and dock. The island is occupied by soldiers working for Du Casse. Clear out all the enemies in the camp — don’t worry too much about stealth here, the enemy groups are small and scattered. Once they’re down, interact with the paper attached to the barrel inside the main tent. It reveals that Du Casse’s men are planning an immediate attack on the Padre’s village at Caracol. Fast travel back to Caracol immediately. When you arrive, you’ll find the Padre praying beneath a large cross — the village has been devastated and villagers hang from the trees around him. The cutscene that follows is one of the darker moments in the new content. After it ends, the Padre officially joins the Jackdaw’s crew and Ram Dash unlocks. The next two quests are bonus content.
Quest 3 — Cape of Good Hope
Unlock: Complete Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage.
Location: Cape Bonavista
The Padre learns that the survivors of Du Casse’s force have regrouped at Cape Bonavista — the same location where the main story began in Sequence 1. Sail there and deal with the remaining soldiers. This is a combat-forward mission with no stealth requirement. Clear every enemy at the camp and return to the Padre to close the mission. A short but satisfying moment of closure for what happened at Caracol.
Quest 4 — The Other Cheek

Unlock: Complete Cape of Good Hope.
Location: Havana docks area
The Padre has tracked a corrupt clergyman named Bishop Ravenscroft to Havana. Meet the Padre near the marked location and then investigate three clues to pin down the Bishop’s position:
- A warning notice pinned to the board in the middle of the market
- An invitation letter carried by one of two civilians talking near the shore beside the barn — you need to loot this from the civilian
- A conversation near the docks where civilians mention the Bishop’s secret prayers in the forest
Return to the Padre once you’ve gathered every clue. Follow him through the forest and defeat all enemies protecting the Bishop. Then eliminate the Bishop himself to complete the mission and conclude the Padre’s full questline. The Small Goblet trinket is your reward — equip it from your loadout for the healing boost it provides.
Tobias “Deadman” Smith — Master Gunner Questline
Deadman is the final recruitable officer and by far the most powerful. He serves as the Jackdaw’s Master Gunner and brings two distinct abilities. Extra Salvo — unlocked when he joins — fires an additional broadside cannon volley with every attack, effectively close to doubling broadside damage. Deadman’s Cohort Mortar — unlocked through his personal questline — provides a tighter, more precise mortar pattern for hitting clustered enemy ships. Unlike Lucy and the Padre, Deadman is not accessible through a standalone officer questline. He’s recruited through the A World Without Gold questline.
How to Unlock Deadman
Three things must be true before Deadman’s recruitment mission becomes available:
- Complete Sequence 11: Everything Is Permitted
- Have Lucy Baldwin already recruited (complete The One with the Gun)
- Have The Padre already recruited (complete Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage)
Once all three conditions are met and you’ve progressed far enough into A World Without Gold (specifically after completing the mission It’s a Start), the recruitment mission unlocks.
Recruitment Mission — I Just Want to Talk
Location: Nassau (598, 757) / Great Inagua area
Sail to the marked location in the A World Without Gold chain. Deadman is encountered during this mission as an ally against Maynard. After the confrontation, a cutscene plays where Edward convinces him to join the Jackdaw. Extra Salvo unlocks immediately when Deadman comes aboard. His personal questline — No Box Dark Enough — then appears back at Great Inagua.
Deadman’s Personal Questline — No Box Dark Enough

Unlock: Complete I Just Want to Talk (A World Without Gold).
Location: Great Inagua
This questline runs separately from A World Without Gold and consists of three missions:
Mission 1 — No Box Dark Enough: Meet Tobias in Great Inagua before sailing together to Petite Caverne. After docking, fight through the British soldiers with Tobias until you reach the commander hiding at the end of the cavern. Kill the commander to complete the mission.
Mission 2 — Very Little But Something: Travel to Crooked Island to continue Tobias’ storyline. After arriving, rescue all four captured villagers while dealing with the British soldiers occupying the area. The villagers are scattered across the island — clear guards around each one and interact to free them. Once everyone is safe, head over to Deadman’s house on the island to wrap up the mission.
Mission 3 — Final Naval Battle: Return to Great Inagua and speak with Tobias one last time. Deadman’s Cohort Mortar unlocks for the Jackdaw before you sail toward the mission marker. A large naval battle follows — make good use of the new mortar attack while avoiding destroying ships outright. Weaken them enough to board instead, which lets you restore the Jackdaw’s health during the fight. Once every hostile vessel has been sunk, Tobias’ full questline is complete.
What Order Should You Do the Officer Quests In?
Do Lucy Baldwin and The Padre as soon as Sequence 4 ends. Their abilities change how the entire mid-game plays out — Perfect Brace makes every naval fight more survivable, and Ram Dash gives you a free high-damage tool with no cannonball cost. Together they take less than an hour to recruit and the payoff lasts through the rest of the game.
If you’re building toward aggressive naval play, start with The Padre first — Ram Dash is the fastest way to speed up early plundering runs for upgrade materials. If survivability is the priority, Lucy first — Perfect Brace has no cooldown and its value only grows as enemy ships hit harder. Either way, finish both before you reach Sequence 11. Deadman’s recruitment is gated behind having both of them already aboard, so leaving them late forces unnecessary backtracking mid-chapter. For full details on how Deadman fits into the larger chapter structure, our A World Without Gold walkthrough covers every mission in sequence.
Officer Abilities — How Each One Works in Combat
- Perfect Brace (Lucy Baldwin): Press the brace button right as an attack is about to impact. Timed correctly, incoming damage is massively reduced — almost negated on some hits. No cooldown. Works against all ship types including Legendary Ships.
- Ram Dash (The Padre): Press L1+R1 (PS5) or LB+RB (Xbox) to surge the Jackdaw forward. Deals enormous impact damage on contact. Recharges by dealing weapon damage. Effective enough to sink small ships outright in a single hit.
- Extra Salvo (Deadman): After every broadside cannon fire, a second volley automatically follows after a short delay. Nearly doubles your broadside DPS output in extended naval fights. Passive — no activation needed.
- Cohort Mortar (Deadman — full questline): A tighter, more precise mortar firing pattern. Better for hitting clustered ships than the standard mortar spread. Use it when multiple enemies group together.
All three officer abilities are essential for the toughest naval content in the game. See our Legendary Ships guide for exactly how each ability helps against those specific fights. And for the full Jackdaw upgrade path, our ship upgrade guide covers everything in one place.
