Best Way to Get Started in Gothic 1 Remake

Best way to get started in Gothic 1 Remake — follow Diego, get your first weapon, spend Learning Points wisely, and survive the early hours in the Colony.

The best way to get started in Gothic 1 Remake is to understand one thing early: this game will not hold your hand. There are almost no quest markers. Your character starts weak on purpose. The world does not scale to your level. Enemies that are too strong for you right now will still be standing in the same spot hours later — and they will still kill you if you rush in unprepared. This guide gives you everything you need to survive the first hours and build a strong foundation.

TL;DR

  • Follow Diego to the Old Camp — do not wander off alone at the very start
  • Pick up the pickaxe and rusty sword on the way to the Old Camp
  • Ore Nuggets are the currency — collect everything, sell what you do not need
  • Always quicksave with F5 before fights, thefts, or entering new areas
  • Fight enemies one at a time — never pull groups
  • Spend your first Learning Points on One-Handed skill with Scatty in the Old Camp
  • Learn magic early through the Price of Magic quest with Torrez
  • Visit all three camps before choosing a faction — it is a permanent decision
  • Talk to every NPC — quests and objectives are given through dialogue, not map markers

Understand What Kind of Game This Is

Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful remake of a 2001 RPG. It plays like one. The Nameless Hero starts as a powerless convict dropped behind a magical barrier. He cannot fight well, cannot carry good weapons yet, and has no standing with anyone in the Colony.

That weakness is the point. Combat feels slow and risky until you invest Learning Points into weapon skills. The world has fixed enemy difficulty — a wolf near the edge of the map will kill you at level 1 and it will not suddenly become easy at level 3. You are expected to retreat, plan, come back stronger, and pay attention to what NPCs tell you.

If you approach this like a modern open-world RPG where you can wander anywhere from the start, you will die constantly and feel lost. Approach it as an RPG that rewards patience and observation, and it becomes one of the best games of 2026.

Before starting, make sure your PC is running the game properly. The best PC settings for Gothic 1 Remake cover the right graphics options for every hardware tier to avoid stutters and frame drops.

Your First Minutes – Follow Diego

The game starts with the Nameless Hero being thrown into the Colony. The first NPC you meet is Diego. Talk to him fully. Let him escort you to the Old Camp.

This is not optional advice. Diego walks the path to the Old Camp and clears out creatures you cannot handle yet. You still earn the experience points for every kill he makes. Walking with him is effectively free XP with zero risk.

On the way, you pass an abandoned mine just after the guarded gate. Stop here and pick up the pickaxe from the mine entrance on the left. Continue along the path to the bridge. On the far side of the bridge you will find your first weapon: a rusty sword. There is also a molerat nearby. Save before you try to grab it. Either fight the molerat with your pickaxe or grab the sword quickly and back away — both approaches work. Pick up any ore chunks in the area too. Ore is the currency of the Colony and you will need it constantly.

The Four Core Stats

Open the menu and look at your Stats page. There are four things to track:

  • Health – Your life total. Drops to zero and you die. Increases automatically when you level up — you do not need to spend Learning Points on it manually.
  • Mana – Used for casting spells. You start with a small amount but cannot cast spells yet. Mana refills when you sleep or rest.
  • Strength – Controls how much damage you deal with melee weapons and which weapons you can equip. This is your main stat to build early.
  • Dexterity – Controls ranged weapon damage and affects some skills. Worth investing in once Strength is at a useful level.

Health increases on its own. Focus your early Learning Points on Strength and the One-Handed weapon skill rather than manually upgrading Health or Dexterity.

How Learning Points Work

Every time you level up you earn 10 Learning Points. Levelling up comes from killing enemies and completing quests. Learning Points are spent at skill trainers — specific NPCs scattered across the camps, not in a menu.

Trainers may ask for ore, a favour, or a quest completion before they will teach you. The key things to know:

  • There is no respec. Every Learning Point you spend is permanent for that playthrough.
  • Do not spread points across too many systems at once. Pick a direction and commit early.
  • Spending points with trainers also unlocks new combat animations and techniques — this is not just a stat number increase. It changes how your character physically fights.

The first trainer worth visiting is Diego in the Old Camp, who can increase your Strength and Dexterity. The second is Scatty, the arena master, who teaches the One-Handed skill for 10 LP and 50 Ore. That skill unlocks combo attacks, parrying, critical hits, and dodge cancelling — it transforms early combat.

Your First Combat Priority – One-Handed Skill

Do not try to fight seriously before spending Learning Points on a weapon skill. Without the One-Handed skill trained, your combat animations are basic and you will struggle against anything tougher than a meatbug.

Once you have the skill from Scatty, the basic pattern for early combat becomes much cleaner: attack to make the enemy flinch, dodge backwards, wait for their swing to miss, attack again. A simple three-hit combo of left click, right click, left click repeated will stagger most early enemies reliably. You can also lock on to enemies using Tab.

The combat timing in Gothic 1 Remake is deliberate. Do not spam attacks. Watch the enemy, bait their lunge, then punish the opening. This works much better than button mashing, especially without armor.

Fight One at a Time – Always

This cannot be overstated. Getting hit by two enemies at once in the early game is almost always lethal. The game’s AI will happily surround you if you pull a group.

Always try to separate enemies before engaging. Walk near one, trigger it, then back away from the group before the fight starts. If more than one enemy starts chasing you, run until only one is following. Fight that one first.

Wolves, in particular, travel in packs. Do not engage wolves early. They are much more dangerous than they look at low levels. Start with meatbugs, isolated scavengers, and molerats while you build up Strength and ore.

Quicksave Constantly

Press F5 to quicksave and F9 to quickload. Learn these two buttons in the first minute and use them obsessively.

Save before every fight. Save before talking to a key NPC. Save before attempting to pick a lock or steal anything. Save before entering a new area you have not been to before.

The game does have autosaves but they are not frequent enough to rely on. Losing 90 minutes of progress to an unexpected wolf pack is a rite of passage for players who skip this advice. You do not need to be one of them.

Ore and the Economy – Collect Everything

Ore Nuggets are the currency of the Colony. You need ore to pay trainers, buy equipment, upgrade armor, and progress quests. The economy is tight in the early hours.

Your inventory space is effectively limitless. Pick up everything. Mushrooms, herbs, meat, tools, cups, plates, excess pickaxes — all of it can be sold for ore to traders like Fisk and Dexter in the Old Camp marketplace.

A few reliable ore sources early on:

  • Mine ore manually from the glowing blue nodes in the Old Mine in the northwest of the Colony — bring a pickaxe
  • Learn the Smithing skill from Huno in the Old Camp (10 LP, 50 Ore) — craft one-handed weapons and sell them back for profit
  • Loot everything from dead enemies — meat and creature trophies sell well
  • Complete errands for camp members — many reward ore directly

Do not waste ore on food early. Mushrooms, raw meat, and anything you pick up off the ground keeps your health up for free. Eating to heal is the main recovery method in the early game.

Get Magic Early – Do the Price of Magic Quest

One of the first quests you should complete in the Old Camp is the Price of Magic quest in Gothic 1 Remake. Find Torrez, the Fire Mage, near the well in the southern market. He will ask you to bring him a Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws, then spend 5 Learning Points to unlock Rune Magic.

The reward is a permanent spell rune — either Firebolt or Healing. Take Firebolt. You can already heal by eating food. What you cannot do easily in the early game is damage enemies from range before they close in. Firebolt solves that. It changes the way early exploration feels and makes dangerous fights much more manageable.

To recover Mana after casting, smoke Swamp Weed — Dexter in the marketplace will give you some for free. It is far cheaper than Mana potions.

Get a Weapon and Armor as Fast as Possible

The rusty sword from the bridge area is your starting weapon but it will not carry you far. There are a few faster ways to upgrade early:

  • Check the arena corridor in the Old Camp — there is another rusty sword at the end of the metal gate corridor
  • Lure beasts and orcs near the ruined tower toward the guards posted outside. When a guard dies in the fight, pick up their sword. A guard’s sword is a significant upgrade at this stage.
  • Complete quests — many reward weapons or gear directly

Armor is equally important. Even basic armor significantly reduces the damage you take and makes early fights survivable. Joining a camp gives you a starter set of armor as a sign-on bonus, which makes the faction choice an early gear upgrade too. Talk to Every NPC

Gothic 1 Remake uses almost no quest markers. Objectives, locations, and hints are delivered through dialogue. If an NPC mentions someone or somewhere, pay attention — that is the game telling you where to go next.

Talk to everyone, even people who seem hostile or unimportant. Many side quests start through casual NPC conversation. Some trainers will only teach you after you have spoken to specific people first. Some locked areas are accessible after building reputation with the right person.

The game rewards players who observe and listen. If you are ever stuck on where to go, the answer is almost always in a conversation you have not had yet.

A few quick tasks worth doing as soon as you are inside the Old Camp:

The Three Factions – Visit Before You Commit

Gothic 1 Remake has three factions you can join. This choice is permanent and shapes your entire playthrough. Each faction locks you into different trainers, quests, armor, and magic schools.

  • Old Camp – Home of the Guards and the Circle of Fire mages. Best for melee builds and fire magic. Strong crossbow access and the best early LP economy for melee fighters.
  • New Camp – Home of Mercenaries and the Circle of Water mages. Best for bow builds and water magic (ice damage and healing). Easiest rank progression path and early two-handed weapon training.
  • Brotherhood of the Sleeper (Swamp Camp) – A cult worshipping the Sleeper. Magic unlocks immediately as a Novice but caps at Circle 4. Strong early-game magic advantage that weakens in the late game.

You can reach the New Camp and Swamp Camp safely from the Old Camp by finding an NPC escort. Baal Parvez in the marketplace and Mordrag near the south gate can both take you to other camps. Use them — the roads between camps are dangerous alone at low level.

Visit all three camps, do some quests for each, and understand what each offers before committing. Choosing wrong for your intended build means fighting against your own progression for the rest of the run.

Play on Gothic Difficulty

The game offers multiple difficulty settings. For a first playthrough, choose Gothic difficulty. It is the intended experience and simulates the original game’s feel. Novice mode makes the game too forgiving to appreciate the design. Hard and Permadeath are for experienced players who already know the systems.

Gothic difficulty is still hard. That is the point. The early struggle of building your character from nothing is what makes the progression feel rewarding.
