As spotted by Reddit user RdJokr93, map pack prices on Steam and Xbox storefronts were quietly dropped from $14.99 down to $9.99, which lines up suspiciously well with rumored PlayStation pricing for similar content.
The Black Ops 2 Season Pass saw an even bigger cut, dropping from $49.99 to $29.99. The catch is that the original Black Ops never had a Season Pass to begin with, meaning its four map packs would need to be bought individually rather than as one bundle. Add it all up, and getting full access to every map across both games could realistically cost around $70 on top of whatever Activision ends up charging for the ports themselves.
The One Silver Lining: Free Camo Packs
It’s not all bad news. As part of this same pricing shakeup, every camo pack for Black Ops 2, which used to cost $2 each, has been changed to completely free. It’s a small win in an otherwise frustrating situation, but at least cosmetic content isn’t part of the potential repurchase headache.
Zombies Fans Have The Most To Lose
This situation stings especially hard for Zombies players. Unlike multiplayer maps, individual Zombies maps couldn’t be purchased separately until Black Ops 3 introduced that option. That means classic maps like Mob of the Dead were originally only available as part of larger DLC bundles, so if these ports really do require repurchasing DLC, Zombies fans may have no real choice but to buy full packs again just to revisit a handful of beloved maps.
What Activision Could Still Do To Fix This
To be fair, nothing is confirmed yet, and there’s still a chance this all turns out to be a non-issue. Activision could bundle these ports with all existing DLC included, similar to how some past Call of Duty remasters have handled legacy content. A loyalty discount for players who already bought the games and their DLC on PS3 would also go a long way toward smoothing things over, and temporary discounts on the Black Ops 2 Season Pass have happened before, so it’s not out of the question here either.
For now, though, the timing of this DLC price drop just weeks ahead of the PS4 and PS5 ports is hard to ignore.
