Control Resonant: The Underpass Fault Quest Walkthrough (Jesse Sightings)

    By Eva Roberts · September 28, 2026 · 14 min read
Control Resonant The Underpass Fault Quest

    TL;DR:

    • The Underpass Fault is the 3rd and final mission in the Search for Jesse questline.
    • You must complete The Subway Fault first to unlock the Reach ability — without it, you cannot cross to the orange pipe island.
    • Fast travel to The Spire and use Reach Points to grapple across to the Tubes Island (island of orange pipes) to the west.
    • Activate the Fault fast travel door on the island before climbing up — saves time if you die.
    • Clear Mold enemies, enter through the west gap in the island, and interact with the TV to enter the Fault.
    • Inside, trigger seven memory interactions in order by inspecting the wall prompts.
    • Guide the two light-projected children along the walls to reunite young Dylan and Jesse at the Christmas tree.
    • Follow the glowing path to Jesse, complete the ritual at the easel, and finish every dialogue prompt.
    • Reward: 1x Living Shard. Completing this unlocks The House in Distress main quest.

The Underpass Fault is the last of Jesse’s three Fault quests — and the one that gates The House in Distress main mission. It also confuses a lot of players because Dylan gets the objective early but immediately hits an invisible wall on the approach. The jump is not broken. You are just not meant to cross yet. This guide covers exactly why, how to fix it, and how to complete every step inside the Fault itself.

    The Underpass Fault Quest Overview

Main Story Chain: Search for Jesse (Jesse Sightings)

Quest Number: 3rd mission in the Search for Jesse questline

Starting Location: Underpass — island of orange pipes (Tubes Island)

Requirement: Reach the Underpass during Recursions and Iterations. Must also have completed The Subway Fault to unlock the Reach ability.

Reward: 1x Living Shard, Before I Leave collectible record

Quest Description: A tenuous vision of Jesse is leading Dylan towards an island where the Patterned orange pipes in the Underpass converge. Maybe he can still find her.

Unlocks on completion: The House in Distress (8th main mission, Contain the Crisis chain)

If you are unsure about the full progression order around this quest, our Recursions and Iterations walkthrough covers how the Underpass opens up and where The Spire fast travel door is located.

    The Underpass Fault Quest Objectives

    1. Investigate the Vision of Jesse on the Island of Orange Pipes
    2. Enter the Fault
    3. Find Jesse and Talk to Her
    4. Guide the Light-Projected Children
    5. Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse
    6. Help Jesse Complete the Ritual

Why You Cannot Progress at First — The Soft Block Explained

The vision of Jesse appears while Dylan is working through Recursions and Iterations in the Underpass. The quest logs automatically, and the objective points you toward the island of orange pipes to the west. When you try to follow it, Zoe warns Dylan that he cannot make the jump. There is no way around this. The barrier is intentional.

The Fault quests must be done in a fixed sequence:

    • Incursion Fault → grants the Shift ability (walk along walls and gravity-shifted surfaces)
    • Subway Fault → grants the Reach ability (grapple across gaps using Reach Points)
    • Underpass Fault → requires Reach to cross to the Tubes Island

Without Reach, the gap to the orange pipe island cannot be crossed regardless of what you try. If you have not done The Subway Fault yet, complete that first. Once Reach is unlocked, come back here and the crossing works.

For more on reaching The Subway Fault and unlocking Reach, see our Subway Fault guide.

Step 1 — How to Reach the Island of Orange Pipes

How to Reach the Island of Orange Pipes
How to Reach the Island of Orange Pipes

Once you have Reach, fast travel to The Spire in the Underpass. This is the quickest starting point for reaching the Tubes Island. The Spire fast travel door is right beside the Underpass Resonant quest — if you have not done that yet, our Underpass Resonant walkthrough covers the full climb and boss fight.

From The Spire fast travel door:

    • Open your map and confirm the objective marker is on the orange pipe island to the west.
    • Begin gliding and jumping across the floating concrete pillars toward the large cluster of bright orange conduit pipes.
    • Use Reach Points (glowing grapple anchors in the environment) to cross the wider gaps between islands.

When you reach the lower section of the Tubes Island, look for a platform partway up that holds a golden Fault fast travel door. Activate it before going any further. If you die during the Mold fights on the island or inside the Fault, you can fast travel back directly instead of making the full crossing again.

Step 2 — Clear the Island and Enter the Fault

Climb up to the main platform of the Tubes Island. A group of Mold enemies is waiting at the top — defeat all of them before trying to move further. Do not rush past them. More Mold enemies are waiting below and the fights can overlap if you pull too many at once.

Once the top is clear, do not go straight ahead. Instead, go around to the west side of the island (the back). There is a gap in the orange pipe structure there that leads inside the island. Drop in and follow the interior path.

Inside, defeat the next groups of Mold enemies — including flying tentacled creatures and a fungal brute. Clearing them rewards Fungal Grow and Source and opens the passage forward. Follow the tight pipe corridors south toward a white-lit room. Keep moving until you reach a small square dais surrounded by curved pipes.

Jump across the gaps in the room and interact with the TV on the far side to enter the Fault.

Step 3 — Find Jesse Inside the Fault

    Find Jesse Inside the Fault
    Find Jesse Inside the Fault

The Fault opens onto a dark clearing buried in golden autumn leaves. The objective reads “Find Jesse and Talk to Her.” Unlike the previous Faults, this one is not combat-heavy. It is built around memory interaction prompts — white eye icons on large stone monolith faces that trigger projections when you interact with them.

Follow the path ahead, chasing the orange shadows moving through the environment.

All Seven Memory Interactions in Order

Interact with each wall or monolith prompt in the order they appear. You cannot skip ahead — each memory must play out before the next one becomes available.

    • “I remember Mom” — Dylan’s mother teaching him to paint
    • “I remember Dad” — his father taking him camping and hiking
    • “We were happy” — the whole family together
    • “Everything was simple back then” — Jesse and Dylan as young children
    • “They didn’t recognize us anymore” — the parents’ shadows towering over both children
    • (Family breakdown) — the father’s drinking and anger, the mother shutting herself away
    • “Remember” — both children reunited at the Christmas tree

After the third stone face, a golden humanlike figure emerges and slips through a gap in the monolith. Pursue it across the floating leaf-covered slabs above the void. When you reach the wall showing the two children together, the objective updates.

When you reach a platform with objects around it: inspect the shadow on the right side first, then the left side, then the middle — in that order. After the memory plays, jump into the hole in the wall to continue.

At one point you will hit a dead end — inspect the wall in front of you when this happens. After the memory finishes, jump into the hole in the wall to keep moving.

Step 4 — How to Guide the Light-Projected Children

How to Guide the Light Projected Children
How to Guide the Light Projected Children

When the objective changes to “Guide the Light-Projected Children,” the puzzle logic shifts. The silhouettes of young Dylan and young Jesse appear projected on the walls, but you do not control them directly. Your movement across nearby ledges is what makes them advance. Walk along a surface near a silhouette and it follows the path you carve out.

The core rule: keep the silhouette in view. If you jump around a corner and lose sight of it, the connection breaks and the figure stops moving. Always stay within visual range of whichever silhouette you are currently guiding.

    • When you first see the pair of glowing silhouettes, take the path leading around to the left — do not try to jump directly across to them.
    • When the parents’ large shadows appear, one silhouette still needs to be brought over from the side before you can interact with the parent projections.
    • Use the route on the right to lead the Dylan silhouette down to the dead end, then grapple back up using the Reach Point above and jump to the upper platform to guide it to the center.
    • Use the route on the left for the Jesse silhouette — drop down to it, lead it to the dead end below it, then use Gravity Shift to walk along the left wall and bring it to the center of the area.

Climbing the higher ledges along the hall’s perimeter is what sets the children in motion in the main chamber. Once both shadows arrive at the towering parent figures, the “They didn’t recognize us anymore” prompt activates and the family breakdown projection plays.

Step 5 — Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse

    Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse
    Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse

Take the tunnel that appears after young Dylan’s silhouette and the objective changes to “Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse.” This is the Fault’s most involved room — you need to bring both figures to the same spot at the same time in a multi-level space.

    • First silhouette: Use the ledges immediately in front of you to move it to the wall’s midpoint.
    • Second silhouette: Return the way you came and use the left-hand route to guide the second figure across. This route requires Gravity Shift to access the surfaces that move this figure.
    • Once both figures are centered in the space, interact with the wall in the middle. The children come together in front of the Christmas tree projection. The “Remember” memory plays and the floor beneath you disappears.

Drop through the opening and follow the path forward. Jesse is at the end.

Step 6 — Talk to Jesse and Complete the Ritual

Talk to Jesse and Complete the Ritual
Talk to Jesse and Complete the Ritual

Walk down the wooded path lit by a warm street lamp. Jesse is standing at the end. Speak with her. Dylan’s dialogue options here — including “You were just a kid too” — are story flavor only and do not gate progression. Work through all of them.

The objective updates to “Help Jesse Complete the Ritual.” A projection plays showing the night their mother aimed a rifle at them. Follow the glowing golden highway scattered with leaves toward the eclipse-like rift in the distance.

Beyond the rift, you will find an easel with floating artwork beside an illuminated CRT television. Speak with Jesse here. She explains:

    • They are astrally projecting — this is not a physical meeting.
    • She needs to seal the Fault from her side of the divide.
    • She is preparing for one final Fault — this is not goodbye.

Continue through every dialogue prompt until they are all exhausted. Do not stop partway through — if The Underpass Fault remains active in your Quest Log after you leave, you did not finish the ritual conversation. Return to the easel and complete the remaining dialogue.

The projection dissolves. Jesse fades out and Dylan wakes in the real world, landing in an area decorated with childhood bedroom relics. The Quest Completed banner appears.

    The Underpass Fault Rewards

    • 1x Living Shard
    • Before I Leave — collectible record added to Dylan’s log
    • Notes: Jesse Sightings — completes automatically
    • The House in Distress — main quest now unblocked and available

What Comes Next After The Underpass Fault

Completing this quest unblocks The House in Distress — the 8th main mission in the Contain the Crisis chain. That quest sends Dylan into the Oldest House’s Interactions Lab, involves a three-pattern power puzzle, and ends with another Fault Ritual inside Main Test Chamber V-E2. Our full guide on how to restore power in The House in Distress covers every step including all three Electrokinesis Test 82 patterns.

    Common Mistakes and Tips

    • Trying to reach the island without Reach: It is not possible. The Subway Fault must be completed first. There is no platforming trick that bypasses this requirement.
    • Skipping the Fault fast travel door on the island: It is on a lower platform partway up the island. Activate it before engaging the Mold enemies at the top. If you die, it saves a full crossing.
    • Going straight through the top of the island: The entrance is on the west side, not the front. Go around to the back of the orange pipe structure to find the gap that leads inside.
    • Losing a silhouette during the guiding section: If a child figure stops moving, you have broken line of sight with it. Go back toward it and re-establish visual contact before continuing.
    • Leaving the Fault before finishing all dialogue with Jesse: If the quest is still showing as active after you exit, return to the easel and finish every remaining prompt. The ritual only completes when all dialogue is exhausted.
    • Confusing this quest with The Underpass Resonant: Both quests start in the Underpass. Track The Underpass Fault specifically in your Quest Log so the map marker points you to the orange pipe island rather than The Spire.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not reach the Underpass Fault in Control Resonant?

You need the Reach ability, which is only unlocked by completing Jesse Sightings: The Subway Fault first. Without Reach, the gap to the orange pipe island cannot be crossed. Zoe will warn Dylan that he cannot make the jump. Complete The Subway Fault, return to The Spire, and the crossing works.

Where is the Underpass Fault entrance in Control Resonant?

Fast travel to The Spire in the Underpass and use Reach Points to grapple west toward the large cluster of orange pipes (the Tubes Island). Activate the Fault fast travel door on the lower platform first, then climb to the top, clear the Mold enemies, and enter through the gap on the west side of the island. Follow the interior path south to the TV and interact with it to enter the Fault.

How do I guide the light-projected children in The Underpass Fault?

The silhouettes advance when you move across surfaces near them — you do not control them directly. Keep each figure in view while navigating the ledges around it. Losing line of sight breaks the connection and stops it moving. Use the right-hand route for the Dylan silhouette and the left-hand route for the Jesse silhouette. Both require Gravity Shift to access the necessary wall surfaces.

How do I reunite young Dylan and Jesse in the Fault?

In the multi-level room, guide the first silhouette to the wall’s midpoint using the ledges directly ahead. Then go back and use the left-hand route to guide the second silhouette — you need Gravity Shift here. Once both figures are centered, interact with the wall in the middle to trigger the Christmas tree memory and complete the reunion.

Why is The Underpass Fault still showing as active after I left?

You did not finish all the dialogue with Jesse at the easel. Return to the Fault, reach the easel beyond the eclipse-like rift, and exhaust every remaining dialogue prompt with Jesse. The quest only completes when the full ritual conversation is done.

Does completing The Underpass Fault unlock anything?

Yes. Completing it is required before The House in Distress main quest can be finished. The game gates The House in Distress behind all three Fault Rituals. Completing The Underpass Fault also rewards one Living Shard and the Before I Leave collectible record.

What is the reward for The Underpass Fault in Control Resonant?

You receive one Living Shard and the Before I Leave collectible record. The Notes: Jesse Sightings objective also completes automatically, and The House in Distress main quest becomes available to finish.

Control Resonant is available on the official Control website, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
