Control Resonant: How to Reach the Unknown Zone (Sever the Hedron Links)

    By Eva Roberts · September 28, 2026 · 14 min read
How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant Take the Elevator to Roof Access

    TL;DR

    • The Unknown Zone is a floating cityscape above the Oldest House — there are no roads, tunnels, or subways leading up to it.
    • You reach it automatically during the Sever the Hedron Links main quest (Contain the Crisis questline).
    • You need the Shift and Reach traversal abilities before attempting this.
    • Go to the Oldest House elevator on the upper lobby floor and select Roof Access.
    • On the rooftop, climb the Pope’s Research Balloon using Shift and break the cargo crate to get two Probe Relays.
    • Place Probe Relay 1 in the red circle on the rooftop floor. Climb the radio tower and place Probe Relay 2 at the top.
    • A rotating disk platform appears in the sky. Use Reach to get on it, then jump toward the Unknown to land on the floating buildings.
    • Activate the Oldest House Rooftop fast travel point before leaving — it saves the elevator trip on every return visit.
    • Complete Pope’s Research side quest inside the Unknown to unlock traversal across the zone.

The Unknown is the most unusual zone in Control Resonant. It is an entire floating cityscape hanging in the sky directly above the Oldest House — a patterned, gravity-bent version of Manhattan with buildings above and below you and no normal way in. No elevator from the street reaches it. No subway connects to it. The game sends you here during the late-game Contain the Crisis questline, and a lot of players get stuck trying to figure out how the crossing actually works.

This guide covers exactly when the Unknown Zone unlocks, what you need to get there, and the full step-by-step process for reaching it during the Sever the Hedron Links main quest.

When Does the Unknown Zone Unlock in Control Resonant?

The Unknown Zone becomes accessible during the Sever the Hedron Links quest, which is the 10th main mission in the Contain the Crisis questline. You first reach it briefly during the preceding mission, The Hedron Link, and then return to it properly once Sever the Hedron Links begins.

You cannot access the Unknown Zone before this point in the story. There is no way to enter early, and no sequence of traversal moves that gets you up to it from Manhattan’s streets below. The route begins inside the Oldest House.

The Unknown is also the seventh and final region of the game. It is where the late-game content, the last side stories, and the final Resonant fights all take place. Once you are in, plan to spend significant time here before pushing to the end.

What You Need Before Going to the Unknown Zone

Two traversal abilities are required to navigate the Unknown Zone effectively:

    • Shift – Lets Dylan align with walls and angled surfaces, and is used to climb the Pope’s Research Balloons during the crossing. Unlocked from the West Incursion Zone Fault.
    • Reach – Lets Dylan grapple to points in the environment and is used to board the rotating disk platform that launches you into the Unknown. Unlocked from The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone.

If you do not have both abilities yet, you should complete those dimensional faults first. The crossing sequence will not work without them. Our Control Resonant Level 2 Keycard guide and Urban Survival walkthrough cover the Evacuation Zone in detail if you need help getting there.

How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant – Step by Step

Step 1 – Return to the Oldest House

After completing The Hedron Link quest and reporting back to Pope, the Sever the Hedron Links objective updates and sends you back into the Unknown. Do not waste time searching Manhattan for a ground-level route — there is none. The only way in is through the top of the Oldest House in Downtown.

Fast travel to the Oldest House or make your way there on foot.

Step 2 – Take the Elevator to Roof Access

How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant Take the Elevator to Roof Access

Once inside the Oldest House, go to the upper floor of the main lobby. The elevator you need is on this floor, not the ground level. Interact with the elevator controls and select the Roof Access option from the panel.

The elevator takes Dylan all the way to the rooftop. This is the starting platform for the crossing to the Unknown.

Step 3 – Activate the Rooftop Fast Travel Point

Before you do anything else on the rooftop, look to your left and activate the Oldest House Rooftop fast travel door. This is easy to miss the first time but extremely important. Once activated, you can return directly to the rooftop on every future visit without riding the elevator again. The Unknown Zone requires multiple trips, so unlocking this now saves a lot of time later.

Step 4 – Find and Climb the Pope’s Research Balloon

How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant Find and Climb the Popes Research Balloon

From the fast travel door, look around the rooftop for the Pope’s Research Balloon. It is a large tethered weather balloon floating above the platform — it is hard to miss from the rooftop level.

Use the Shift ability to align yourself with the balloon’s position and climb up onto it. Once on top of the balloon, release it. The balloon rises and the cargo crate it was carrying drops down to the rooftop below.

Drop back down and break the cargo crate open with a melee attack or combat ability. Inside are two Probe Relays. Pick both of them up.

Step 5 – Place Probe Relay 1 on the Rooftop Floor

With the Probe Relays in hand, look for the red circle marked on the rooftop floor, positioned in front of the large red circle painted on the rooftop surface. This is where the first relay goes.

Equip Probe Relay 1 and place it inside the red circle on the ground. A confirmation indicator shows it is correctly positioned.

Step 6 – Climb the Radio Tower and Place Probe Relay 2

Now equip the second Probe Relay. You need to get to the top of the tall radio tower at the highest point of the rooftop. Use the blinking radio icon on your minimap as a guide — it marks the tower’s location.

Use Shift and Reach together to climb the tower. Shift lets you align with the tower’s angled surfaces, and Reach lets you grapple up to higher attachment points on the way up. At the top, place Probe Relay 2 on the installation point.

With both relays installed, the local environment physics begin to change. The Patterning above shifts in response to the relay signals.

Step 7 – Board the Rotating Disk Platform

A few moments after the second relay is placed, a rotating disk-like platform appears in the sky nearby. This is your bridge to the Unknown. It does not land — you have to get up to it.

Use Reach to grapple up onto the top of the rotating disk. The platform moves slowly, so timing the grapple is straightforward once you have a clear line to it.

Step 8 – Jump Toward the Unknown

How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant Jump Toward the Unknown
How to Reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant Jump Toward the Unknown

Once you are standing on the disk platform, jump off toward the floating cityscape above. Dylan will fall upward — or rather, the gravity in this area inverts relative to the Unknown Zone, pulling you toward it rather than back down to the Oldest House rooftop.

Aim for one of the buildings or rooftops in the Unknown to land safely. Do not aim for open gaps between structures. Any solid rooftop surface works as a landing point.

You are now in the Unknown Zone.

What to Do First When You Arrive in the Unknown Zone

The Unknown is disorienting. Buildings appear above and below Dylan. Gravity works differently in different sections. The map is blank until you unlock it. Here is what to prioritize as soon as you land:

    Unlock the Zone Map First

The Unknown’s full map stays hidden until you power the FBC Map Kit at the central pylon. Find the central antenna tower and activate its three nearby satellite dish sensors. Once all three are live, return to the central pylon and interact with it to bring the zone map online. This completes the Mapping the New New York side quest and rewards the Untapped Fork artifact.

Revealing the map first makes everything else in the Unknown far easier to track. Without it, navigating the floating islands and locating the Pope’s Research Balloons is much harder.

Complete Pope’s Research to Unlock Full Traversal

The Unknown Zone is divided into multiple floating islands. You cannot reach all of them on arrival — traversal paths only open up as you deploy Probe Relays from Pope’s Research Balloons scattered across the zone.

Pope’s Research is a side quest that gets added to your log automatically after completing The Hedron Link main quest. There are eight Probe Relays to deploy across the Unknown’s islands. Each balloon works the same way as the first one on the Oldest House rooftop — use Shift to climb it, release it, break the cargo crate, and place the relays in the marked red circles nearby.

Pope’s Research is mandatory to progress through the Unknown Zone and reach the Hedron Links. Without completing it, entire sections of the zone remain inaccessible and you will hit dead ends. Do this before attempting the main objectives in Sever the Hedron Links.

Activate Fast Travel Points as You Go

The Unknown has its own fast travel network. Activate every fast travel door you find as you explore. The zone’s shifting geometry makes backtracking painful without them.

Navigating the Unknown Zone – Tips

    • Gravity does not always work the same way. Some sections of the Unknown flip Dylan’s orientation. Shift is how you align yourself with inverted surfaces and continue climbing. Expect to use it constantly.
    • Use Gravity Wells to move between islands. Gravity Wells are scattered throughout the zone and are the main way to cross between the floating platforms and landmasses. They are marked on the map once the Map Kit is activated.
    • The minimap is your best tool for balloons. Once you have the zone map active, Pope’s Research Balloons appear as markers on the minimap. Look upward and around each island — balloons float above the surface level, not on it.
    • Aberrant Strength matters here. The Unknown has the toughest enemies in the game. You want roughly Aberrant Strength 100 before spending serious time here. The Hiss, Mold, and Hedron enemies that patrol the floating islands hit harder than anything you faced in the earlier zones.
    • The zone shifts after story events. Some routes and platforms change after you sever Hedron Links. If a path you used earlier is no longer there, look for an alternate route and use Reach to find a new grapple point.

What Happens After You Reach the Unknown Zone

Once you are in the Unknown and Pope’s Research is underway, the Sever the Hedron Links quest sends you after two remaining Hedron Links. The first is on a southern island, reached by following the route toward the Patterned Evac Building and jumping across floating platforms to interact with the Link. Severing it triggers a boss fight against the Hedron Factor.

The second Link requires further traversal through the Unknown using Gravity Wells and Probe Relay paths established during Pope’s Research. After both Links are severed, the quest updates and sends you toward the Hedron itself for the final confrontation.

The Unknown is also where you will find the Pulse Fitness Gym Secret Hideout — the sixth and final Secret Hideout in the game. It contains the last Health Upgrade available and counts toward the Backroom Espionage achievement. For context on all six hideout puzzles, check out our Atlantis Cafe cash register code guide and Downtown appliance puzzle walkthrough.

The Unknown also has its own Resonant boss fight as part of The Unknown Resonant main quest in the Defeating Resonants questline. This involves finding Arish, escorting Rangers, solving a Power Core puzzle, and facing the Co-Director boss. That quest is separate from Sever the Hedron Links and requires Pope’s Research to be complete before you can reach it.

Before pushing into the Unknown’s final content, make sure you have all the keycards you need. Our Clearance Level 6 Keycard guide and SR Keycard guide cover the last two locked doors in the game that open in this zone.

If you want a break from the heavy combat in the Unknown, the earlier hidden discoveries are still worth revisiting — check the Control Resonant Alan Wake Easter egg guide if you missed the Nightwatchman recording in the Evacuation Zone.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you reach the Unknown Zone in Control Resonant?

Go to the Oldest House in Downtown, take the elevator on the upper lobby floor and select Roof Access. On the rooftop, use Shift to climb the Pope’s Research Balloon, release it, break the cargo crate for two Probe Relays, and place them — one in the red circle on the rooftop floor, one at the top of the radio tower. A rotating disk platform then appears in the sky. Use Reach to board it and jump toward the floating cityscape to land in the Unknown.

When does the Unknown Zone unlock in Control Resonant?

The Unknown first becomes accessible during The Hedron Link main quest and is fully opened in the following quest, Sever the Hedron Links. Both are part of the Contain the Crisis questline in the late game. You cannot reach the Unknown before this story point.

Do you need Shift and Reach to reach the Unknown Zone?

Yes. Shift is used to climb the Pope’s Research Balloon on the Oldest House rooftop, and Reach is used to grapple up to the radio tower and board the rotating disk platform. Without both abilities, the crossing sequence cannot be completed. Shift is unlocked from the West Incursion Zone Fault and Reach from The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone.

What is Pope’s Research in Control Resonant?

Pope’s Research is a side quest that becomes active when you enter the Unknown Zone. It involves finding eight weather balloons scattered across the Unknown’s floating islands, climbing each one using Shift, releasing the cargo, and placing Probe Relays in marked red circles nearby. Completing it opens traversal paths across all of the Unknown’s islands and is mandatory to progress through Sever the Hedron Links.

What should you do first when you arrive in the Unknown Zone?

Unlock the Zone Map by finding the central antenna tower and powering its three satellite dish sensors. Then activate every fast travel point you find. After that, start Pope’s Research to open traversal across the floating islands before attempting any main quest objectives.

Is the Unknown Zone the last area in Control Resonant?

Yes. The Unknown is the seventh and final region in Control Resonant. It contains the last Hedron Links, the final Resonant boss fight (The Unknown Resonant), the sixth Secret Hideout, and the remaining side stories not found in the earlier zones.
