Control Resonant Alan Wake Easter Egg – How to Find The Nightwatchman

    TL;DR

    • The Alan Wake Easter egg is in the Evacuation Zone, south of Railyard Street Station.
    • Look for an apartment building near the Urban Fresh storefront — it has teal-green Patterning around the lower entrance.
    • You need the Reach ability (unlocked via The Subway Fault) to get to the rooftop easily, but it is not strictly required.
    • On the rooftop, walk in front of the Altered Camera — it briefly freezes Dylan.
    • Head inside and go down two to three floors until you find a half-open apartment door covered in Dark Place material.
    • Follow the dark hallway to the lit room at the end. Interact with the CRT TV to trigger the Easter egg.
    • The recording is called The Master of Many Worlds and is saved to your Archives under the Nightwatchman category.
    • Alan Wake appears as a nightwatchman alongside Alex Casey and delivers a monologue about sleeplessness, the Dark, and the Scratcher.

Control Resonant is set in warped Manhattan, and Remedy has packed it with connections to the wider Remedy Connected Universe. The most exciting one is a hidden Alan Wake Easter egg tucked away in the Evacuation Zone. It is not marked on the map. There is no quest that sends you there. Most players walk right past it.

But if you find it, you get a full live-action recording of Alan Wake working as a nightwatchman — alongside Alex Casey — delivering a strange monologue that many fans believe is teasing what comes next in the franchise. This guide tells you exactly how to get there in Control Resonant.

Control Resonant Alan Wake Easter Egg – Location Overview

Control Resonant Alan Wake Easter Egg Location

The Easter egg is in Evacuation Zone 4, on the road running south from Railyard Street Station. The building you want is an apartment block on the left side of the road, close to an Urban Fresh storefront. It sits north of the Survivor’s Apartment and Evac Building markers.

At street level, the building is identifiable by the teal-green Patterning and mold around its lower entrance. You cannot enter from the street — you have to get onto the rooftop first.

    • Zone: Evacuation Zone 4
    • Nearest Fast Travel: Railyard Street Station
    • Street Landmark: Urban Fresh storefront
    • Rooftop Marker: Altered Camera
    • Collectible: The Master of Many Worlds
    • Archives Category: The Nightwatchman (1/1)

What You Need Before You Go

You need to have reached the Evacuation Zone through the main story first. The Evacuation Zone opens up during the Contain the Crisis questline — specifically once you are directed there for the first time. You cannot access this area before that point.

The Reach ability makes getting to the rooftop significantly easier. Reach is unlocked from The Subway Fault dimensional fault in the Evacuation Zone. With Reach, you can grapple directly up to the rooftop where the Altered Camera sits. Without it, you have to climb through an adjacent mold-covered building and cross the rooftops manually — it takes longer but works.

If you have not picked up Reach yet, it is worth getting before heading for this Easter egg. Our Control Resonant Urban Survival quest walkthrough covers the Evacuation Zone in detail if you need help navigating the area first.

How to Reach the Alan Wake Easter Egg in Control Resonant

alan wake easter egg control resonant Travel to Railyard Street Station
alan wake easter egg control resonant Travel to Railyard Street Station

Step 1 – Travel to Railyard Street Station

Fast travel to Railyard Street Station in the Evacuation Zone. This is the closest landmark to the Easter egg and the cleanest starting point for navigating to it.

Step 2 – Head South Along the Road

From the station, take the road heading south. Keep an eye on the buildings along the left side of the road as you walk. You are looking for an apartment block close to the Urban Fresh storefront. The green-teal Patterning around the building’s lower section makes it stand out from the other structures nearby.

Step 3 – Get onto the Rooftop

There are two ways to get up here depending on whether you have the Reach ability:

    • With Reach: Use the Reach grapple to pull yourself directly up to the rooftop of the apartment building. This is the fast route.
    • Without Reach: Find the yellow mold-covered building nearby and go inside. Climb the interior stairways to the top, then hop across the rooftops heading east until you land on the building with the Altered Camera on it.

Step 4 – Walk in Front of the Altered Camera

On the rooftop, you will spot an Altered Camera. This is one of the cameras tied to the Freeze Frame side story. Walk into its field of view. Dylan will be briefly frozen in place. Do not worry — this is normal. Once the effect wears off and you regain control, turn around and go through the open doorway behind the camera.

Do not skip interacting with the camera. The door behind it only becomes accessible after the freeze effect plays out.

Step 5 – Descend the Stairs to the Corrupted Apartment

Head down the stairs inside the building. You are going down roughly two to three floors. As you descend, you are looking for an apartment door that is slightly ajar. The entrance is surrounded by dark black material from the Dark Place. A red carpet, flickering lamp, and bloodstained walls make it easy to spot once you are on the right floor.

    Go inside.

Step 6 – Follow the Hallway to the TV

The apartment inside is dark and corrupted. Follow the hallway toward the faint light at the far end. The hallway leads you to a back room containing a buzzing CRT television showing static. Walk up to it and interact with it when the prompt appears.

    The live-action recording begins immediately.

    The Master of Many Worlds
    The Master of Many Worlds

What Happens in the Alan Wake Easter Egg (The Master of Many Worlds)

The recording opens with two figures moving through darkness, each carrying a flashlight. One of them is soon revealed to be Alan Wake, dressed as a nightwatchman. Alongside him is Alex Casey, familiar from Alan Wake 2.

Alan delivers a monologue. He talks about sleeplessness, recurring nightmares, the Dark, and something called the Scratcher. The tone is quiet and uneasy rather than dramatic. The scene uses Dark Place imagery throughout — distorted spaces, strange lighting, and the same visual language from Alan’s sections in Alan Wake 2.

Partway through, the recording shifts into a more surreal sequence — Wake and Casey are seen dancing briefly before the footage cuts back to static and ends. The whole thing is deliberately strange and leaves more questions than answers.

The apartment itself mirrors the twisted Dark Place version of Alan’s apartment that appeared during Alan Wake 2. The setting is not accidental. This is not a background reference — it is a direct narrative crossover between the two games.

Once the recording plays, The Master of Many Worlds is permanently saved to your Archives. Open your Archives menu and scroll to the Nightwatchman tab. The recording is the only entry in that category. Unlocking it marks the category as complete at 1/1. You can replay it any time from the Archives.

Is the Alan Wake Easter Egg Teasing Alan Wake 3?

Many players and fans believe so. Remedy has used in-game Easter eggs and hidden recordings before to hint at what comes next — Control originally contained references to Alan Wake 2, and Alan Wake 2 contained references that pointed back toward Control Resonant.

The title The Master of Many Worlds directly echoes language from Alan Wake 2. Wake’s monologue in the recording touches on the Scratcher, which was a major antagonistic presence in Alan Wake 2. The fact that the recording exists in a Dark Place apartment inside a game set in Manhattan — not anywhere near Alan’s usual world — suggests Remedy is deliberately planting a thread for something larger.

Remedy confirmed in their FAQ that Control Resonant ships as a complete experience with no planned DLC. That shifts the weight of this Easter egg heavily toward it being an Alan Wake 3 tease rather than content pointing at anything within Control Resonant itself.

Other Remedy Connected Universe References in Control Resonant

The Alan Wake Easter egg is the biggest crossover moment, but it is not the only one. Control Resonant includes various smaller callbacks to the broader Remedy Connected Universe:

    • Thomas Zane references appear in collectible documents scattered across the Evacuation Zone.
    • FBC files reference the events of the original Control and its connection to Alan Wake’s world through the Oldest House.
    • Dark Place visual language appears throughout the game’s corrupted zones, not just in the Easter egg apartment.
    • A second minor Alan Wake reference appears near the end of the game — it is brief and easy to miss, but confirms the connection runs through the whole story rather than being confined to a single Easter egg.

Tips for Finding the Easter Egg

    • Get Reach first. The Subway Fault unlocks it and makes the rooftop approach much faster. Without it, you are doing some rooftop hopping that can take a few minutes.
    • Do not skip the Altered Camera step. The door behind the camera only opens after the freeze effect plays. Walk into it on purpose.
    • Look for the dark material on the door frame. The corrupted apartment is two to three floors down. The black Dark Place material around the door makes it stand out clearly in the dim stairwell.
    • Follow the light in the hallway. The apartment interior is dark but the back room glows faintly. Walk toward it.
    • Check your Archives after. The Nightwatchman tab is new and only appears once you unlock the recording. Verify it saved correctly before leaving the area.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Alan Wake Easter egg in Control Resonant?

It is in Evacuation Zone 4, south of Railyard Street Station. Look for an apartment building near the Urban Fresh storefront with teal-green Patterning around the entrance. Get onto the rooftop via Reach or by climbing through the adjacent building, walk in front of the Altered Camera, then go inside and head down two to three floors to find the corrupted apartment.

Do you need the Reach ability to find the Alan Wake Easter egg?

Reach makes it significantly easier because you can grapple straight up to the rooftop. But it is not strictly required — without Reach, you can climb through the nearby mold-covered building and cross the rooftops manually to reach the same spot. Reach just cuts the travel time considerably.

What is The Master of Many Worlds in Control Resonant?

It is a live-action video recording found on a CRT television inside the corrupted apartment. Interacting with the TV plays the recording, which shows Alan Wake working as a nightwatchman alongside Alex Casey. Once played, it is saved permanently to your Archives under the Nightwatchman category and can be replayed at any time.

What does the Alan Wake Easter egg mean for the story?

The recording uses Dark Place imagery and has Alan Wake reference the Scratcher — a key antagonist from Alan Wake 2. The title The Master of Many Worlds echoes language from Alan Wake 2. Since Remedy has confirmed Control Resonant ships with no DLC, most fans and analysts believe this Easter egg is teasing Alan Wake 3 rather than pointing at anything within Control Resonant itself.

Does the Alan Wake Easter egg affect gameplay or trophies?

Interacting with the TV adds The Master of Many Worlds to your Archives and completes the Nightwatchman Archives category at 1/1. If there is a trophy or achievement tied to Archives completion, unlocking this counts toward it. It does not affect the main story or any side quest progress.
