Control Resonant: The Subway Fault – How to Get the Reach Ability

    By Eva Roberts · September 28, 2026 · 14 min read
    Control Resonant The Subway Fault

    TL;DR

    • The Reach ability is unlocked by completing The Subway Fault — the 2nd mission in the Search for Jesse questline.
    • It is located in the Evacuation Zone, beneath Railyard Street Station in the northeast.
    • You need the Shift ability before attempting this — it is required to cross the patterned subway tracks.
    • The quest starts automatically when you get close to Railyard Street Station and Dylan sees a vision of Jesse.
    • Take the subway stairs down, push through Mold-infested tunnels and speeding train hazards, defeat Mold enemies, and interact with the CRT TV to enter the Fault.
    • Inside the Fault, follow the path to Jesse on the subway platform and talk to her — she grants Reach.
    • Complete the Reach tutorial section, interact with the exit TV, and leave the tunnels.
    • On your way out, activate the Patterned Metro Tunnels fast travel door — it also connects to The Park zone.
    • Rewards: 1 x Living Shard and the Reach traversal ability.

Reach is one of the most important traversal abilities in Control Resonant. It lets Dylan grapple to glowing gravity orbs scattered around Manhattan, cross gaps that nothing else can bridge, and reach rooftops and upper areas that are otherwise completely inaccessible. A large number of quests and zones are gated behind it — you cannot progress through Recursions and Iterations, reach the Unknown Zone, or access the Alan Wake Easter egg rooftop without it.

This guide walks through the full Subway Fault quest step by step, from finding the entrance in the Evacuation Zone to unlocking Reach and getting out.

The Subway Fault – Quest Overview

    • Questline: Search for Jesse (Main Story)
    • Quest Number: 2nd mission in Search for Jesse
    • Starting Location: Evacuation Zone — Railyard Street Station (northeast)
    • Requirement: Enter the Evacuation Zone
    • Rewards: 1 x Living Shard, Reach movement ability
    • Quest Description: Patterning in the Evacuation Zone’s subway tunnels could lead me to another Fault. It’s worth taking a look…

What You Need Before Starting The Subway Fault

You need the Shift ability before attempting The Subway Fault. Shift is unlocked from The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone. Without it, the patterned subway tracks — where trains rush through holes in the floor and walls — are much harder to navigate, and certain side tunnel sections cannot be reached at all.

You also need to have reached the Evacuation Zone through the main story. The Subway Fault quest becomes available as soon as you enter the zone for the first time, but the actual quest trigger is proximity to Railyard Street Station in the northeast of the area.

You should also have the Elevate ability from the Orientation Fault, as it helps steer your descent onto tunnel ledges in the deeper sections of the Subway Fault. It is not strictly required, but makes certain drops significantly cleaner.

How to Find The Subway Fault – Starting Location

Control Resonant The Subway Fault Location

The Subway Fault entrance is beneath Railyard Street Station in the northeast corner of the Evacuation Zone. Most of the direct streets leading to this part of the zone are blocked or collapsed. You will need to take an alternate route.

    The easiest approach:

    • Fast travel to the Main Street Station fast travel point in the Evacuation Zone.
    • From Main Street, head north. You can take the streets or move across rooftops.
    • You will reach a construction site and then a Mold-infested parking structure. Push through it — the Mold enemies inside are manageable. Kill the enemy holding the parking structure area and exit out the far side.
    • After exiting the parking structure, turn right. Dylan will begin seeing visions of Jesse — ghostly projections of her moving through the area.
    • Following the Jesse visions leads you directly to the Railyard Street Station subway entrance. The quest log updates to The Subway Fault automatically at this point.

You do not need to manually accept the quest. It triggers on its own the moment you are close enough to the station and Dylan experiences Jesse’s vision.

The Subway Fault – Full Walkthrough

Objective 1 – Investigate the Subway in the Evacuation Zone

Head down the subway stairs at Railyard Street Station. Follow the single path ahead. The early section of the tunnels is linear — there are no branching routes to worry about in the opening stretch.

The tunnels begin normally, then the environment starts to warp as you go deeper. This is standard Fault behaviour in Control Resonant. Expect the geometry to shift as you push forward.

    The Speeding Train Sections

The Subway Fault Full Walkthrough The Speeding Train Sections
The Subway Fault Full Walkthrough The Speeding Train Sections

The first major obstacle is a section where subway trains rush through holes in the walls and floor directly across your path. There are two ways to get past:

    • Jump over the top of the trains as they pass — time the jump to clear the gap while the train is in motion.
    • Use Shift to align yourself with the wall beside the track and walk along it, running through the gap between trains while they move past below you.

The Shift route is faster and more reliable. After the first train section, continue forward past a second set of trains. Once through, either drop down through the hole ahead or use Shift to make the surrounding surface your floor, then go through the door beside the Mold into the next tunnel section.

    The Mold Tunnel Sections

The Subway Fault Full Walkthrough The Mold Tunnel Sections

The deeper tunnels introduce Mold enemies. These are tougher than standard Hiss and hit harder in close quarters. Expect several encounters as you push through:

    • After the train sections, follow the tunnel until you reach a jump up to the next platform. Climb it and continue into the next tunnel.
    • A train rushes straight toward you in this section. Stand on the side of the track to avoid it — either use Shift to go onto the wall or hug the side of the tunnel until it passes.
    • Continue through the next tunnel until you reach a room with a large number of Mold enemies. Clear them all before progressing — they will attack from multiple directions and the room is tight.

    The Large Pit Section

The Subway Fault Full Walkthrough The Large Pit Section
The Subway Fault Full Walkthrough The Large Pit Section

After the Mold enemy room, the next tunnel opens into a large vertical pit. Subway trains rush through this pit from multiple directions — they come from the walls and below, not just from straight ahead.

Drop down carefully while watching the train patterns. The platform you need is the one on the opposite side of the pit from where you started, with another group of Mold enemies waiting on it. Take the drop in stages rather than all at once — use Elevate to control your descent if you have it.

Clear the Mold enemies on the far platform. Go through the door at the back of the platform to reach the next room.

Objective 2 – Enter the Fault

In the room beyond the pit, you will find a CRT television against the wall. This is the Fault entry point — the same format as every other Fault in Control Resonant. Interact with the TV to enter the Fault.

Objective 3 – Find and Talk to Jesse

Inside the Fault, the environment shifts to the surreal golden-toned Astral Plane. Follow the single path ahead through the Fault interior. The route is linear — keep moving forward.

You will eventually reach Jesse standing on a subway platform inside the Fault. Walk up to her and interact to trigger the conversation. Jesse speaks about the Fault, the Pattern, and what it means for Dylan’s connection to the paranatural forces around him.

At the end of the conversation, Jesse grants Dylan the Reach ability. A tutorial notification appears explaining how Reach works: press L3 (left stick click on controller) to grapple toward a Reach Point — the glowing gravity orbs visible throughout the Fault interior and across Manhattan.

Objective 4 – Help Jesse Complete the Ritual

After receiving Reach, the path ahead is lined with Reach Points — this section is essentially a tutorial for the ability. Use Reach to grapple between the glowing orbs and cross the gaps ahead.

Two things worth knowing right away:

    • You can use Reach while airborne. If a Reach Point looks too far away from the ground, jump first and trigger Reach while you are in the air. The grapple works from a significant distance when airborne.
    • Aim for the next orb, not the farthest one. Chain Reach pulls one at a time rather than trying to cross multiple gaps in a single grapple. Each pull brings you to the next orb cleanly.

Keep following the Reach Points until you reach the exit TV at the end of the Fault. Interact with it to leave the Astral Plane and return to the physical subway tunnels below the Evacuation Zone.

Exiting the Subway Tunnels – Two Things Not to Miss

After exiting the Fault, you need to make your way back up through the tunnels. Look up in the large tunnel and use Reach to grapple between the platform Reach Points to climb back up through the pit section. This is your first real use of Reach in the open environment — the grapple points are easy to spot.

As you work your way back up and reach the section with a checkpoint on the right side, do not go left immediately. Instead, go straight ahead. This takes you to two things worth grabbing before leaving:

    • Patterned Metro Tunnels fast travel door — Activate it. This gives you a direct fast travel point into the subway system, which is useful for accessing the Evacuation Zone’s northeast section on future visits without the long walk through the parking structure.
    • Door to The Park zone — Immediately to the right of the fast travel door is a passage that connects directly to the optional Park zone. If you have not been there yet, this is one of the easiest routes in. The Park opens up several side quests and its own Resonant boss fight.

Once you have both, head back left and exit through the normal path to complete The Subway Fault.

Reach Ability – What It Does and Where It Matters

Reach lets Dylan grapple to glowing gravity orbs — called Reach Points — that are scattered across rooftops, buildings, and elevated structures throughout all of Manhattan’s zones. The pull is fast and covers significant distance, making it the fastest traversal method in the game for vertical movement.

Here is where Reach becomes essential:

    • Recursions and Iterations (main quest): The Underpass section of this quest has gaps that cannot be crossed without Reach. The game will not let you finish this quest without it.
    • Reaching the Unknown Zone: The rotating disk platform above the Oldest House rooftop during Sever the Hedron Links is only boardable with Reach. Without it, you cannot get to the Unknown Zone at all. Our Control Resonant Unknown Zone guide covers this in full.
    • Alan Wake Easter egg: The rooftop with the Altered Camera in the Evacuation Zone is most easily reached using Reach. Without it, you have to climb through an adjacent building manually. See our Control Resonant Alan Wake Easter egg guide for the full route.
    • Secret Hideouts: Several Secret Hideout rooftop routes use Reach to skip the ground-level approach. The Evacuation Zone hideout is one of them.
    • General traversal: Reach Points appear throughout all zones. Once you have the ability, a lot of areas that previously seemed like dead ends become navigable routes.

All Traversal Abilities in Control Resonant

Reach is the third traversal ability in the game. There are five in total, each unlocked from a different dimensional Fault. Here is the full list:

    AbilityFaultZone
    ElevateThe Orientation FaultDowntown
    ShiftThe Incursion FaultWest Incursion Zone
    ReachThe Subway FaultEvacuation Zone
    RushThe Underpass FaultEvacuation Zone (Underpass)
    PhaseThe Park FaultThe Park

Reach is the one that unlocks the most previously inaccessible content in a single step. Getting it early — as soon as you enter the Evacuation Zone — is the best approach. Do not leave the zone without it.

    Tips for The Subway Fault

    • Get Shift before you come here. The patterned train sections are navigable without it, but significantly harder. Shift makes the wall-running approach to the train gaps fast and clean.
    • Clear Mold Clusters first in every fight. Mold Clusters heal nearby enemies the same way Hiss Clusters do. Target them before anything else in the tunnel combat rooms.
    • Use Elevate to control pit drops. The large pit section sends trains through from unpredictable angles. Being able to steer your descent mid-fall makes landing on the correct platform much easier.
    • Do not rush the large pit. Watch the train patterns for a beat before dropping. The trains cycle and there are clear windows to drop safely between them.
    • Activate both things on the way out. The Patterned Metro Tunnels fast travel door and the Park zone shortcut are both easy to miss if you take the left path out of the checkpoint area.
    • Practice Reach in the Fault. The tutorial section inside the Fault is forgiving. Use it to get comfortable with the grapple timing and distance before you are using Reach in harder sections outside.

While you are in the Evacuation Zone, make sure to complete the Urban Survival side quest and grab the Level 2 Keycard if you have not already. Both are worth doing in the same session as The Subway Fault.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get the Reach ability in Control Resonant?

Complete The Subway Fault quest in the Evacuation Zone. Head to the northeast of the Evacuation Zone near Railyard Street Station, go down the subway stairs, push through the Mold tunnels and train hazards, and interact with the CRT TV to enter the Fault. Inside, follow the path to Jesse on the subway platform and speak with her — she grants Reach at the end of the conversation.

Where is The Subway Fault in Control Resonant?

It is beneath Railyard Street Station in the northeast corner of the Evacuation Zone. The direct streets to this area are mostly blocked. The easiest approach is to fast travel to Main Street Station, head north, cut through the Mold-infested parking structure, then turn right when you exit — Dylan’s Jesse vision triggers and the quest starts automatically.

Do you need Shift before The Subway Fault?

Yes. The Shift ability — unlocked from The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone — is required to properly navigate the patterned subway tracks where trains rush through the floor and walls. Without Shift, certain sections of the tunnel are significantly harder to get through. Complete The Incursion Fault first.

What happens if you go to The Underpass Fault without Reach?

The game blocks you. If you try to advance through the Underpass region without Reach, you will hit a dead end and cannot progress. The game adds The Subway Fault to your quest log automatically at this point. Fast travel back to Railyard Street Station, complete The Subway Fault, and then return to the Underpass to continue.

What are the rewards for The Subway Fault in Control Resonant?

Completing The Subway Fault rewards 1 x Living Shard and permanently unlocks the Reach traversal ability. Reach lets Dylan grapple to glowing gravity orbs across Manhattan and is required for several main story quests, including Recursions and Iterations and Sever the Hedron Links.

Can you reach The Park zone from The Subway Fault?

Yes. On your way out of the subway tunnels after completing The Subway Fault, go straight at the checkpoint area instead of turning left. You will reach the Patterned Metro Tunnels fast travel door and, immediately to its right, a door that connects directly to The Park zone. Activate both before leaving.
