TL;DR
- Repair is completely free — it costs no materials at all.
- Just interact with any Workbench and all gear in your hotbar repairs instantly.
- You can also repair on the go using Anvils scattered across the open world.
- Items don’t disappear when fully broken — they become unusable but can still be repaired.
- Never let gear hit zero durability before you repair it — repair early and repair often.
Does Equipment Actually Break in Enshrouded?
Here’s something a lot of new players don’t know — your weapons and tools in Enshrouded don’t actually disappear when they break. When an item loses all its durability, it gets crossed out in your inventory and becomes unusable. But it’s still there. You can still take it to a Workbench or Anvil and bring it back to full durability.
That said, it’s still a bad habit to let things fully bottom out. A sword with zero durability mid-fight is a real problem. So knowing how to repair early — and doing it consistently — will save you a lot of grief.
Every weapon, tool, and piece of armor has a small durability bar at the bottom of its icon in your hotbar. Keep an eye on that bar. When it starts looking short, it’s time to find a Workbench or Anvil before heading deeper into enemy territory.
How to Repair Equipment at a Workbench in Enshrouded
The Workbench is the main — and easiest — way to repair everything you own. The process is dead simple: walk up to your Workbench and press E to interact with it. That’s it. The moment you open the crafting screen, every item in your hotbar gets repaired automatically, for free, with no materials required.
You don’t need to select items individually or navigate any menus. Just hitting the interaction button does the job. A notification will appear on the left side of your screen confirming that all your gear has been repaired.

How to Craft a Workbench
If you haven’t built one yet, a Workbench is one of the very first things you should make in Enshrouded. Here’s what you need:
- 8x Wood Logs
- 3x String
Wood Logs come from chopping down regular trees. String is crafted from Plant Fiber, which you get by harvesting bushes and leafy shrubs around the starting area. Open your manual crafting menu (press V) and you’ll see the recipe listed there.
Once you’ve crafted the Workbench, place it within the buildable area of your Flame Altar. It needs to be inside that zone to function properly. After that, every visit to your base is also a repair stop — just tap the Workbench on the way through and you’re always topped up.
The best part? You can repair gear an infinite number of times. There’s no cap, no cost, no degradation over repairs. A weapon you crafted in hour one can still be with you dozens of hours later as long as you keep it repaired.

How to Repair Equipment in the Wild Using Anvils
Heading back to base every time your gear takes a hit isn’t always practical — especially when you’re deep in a dungeon or mid-way through a long exploration run. That’s where Anvils come in.
Anvils are pre-existing repair stations scattered across the open world of Embervale. You can’t craft them yourself, but they’re out there waiting to be found. When you find one, interacting with it works exactly like a Workbench — your gear gets repaired on the spot, for free.

Where to Find Anvils in Enshrouded
Anvils don’t show up on the main map by default, but there are reliable spots to look. They tend to appear near combat-heavy areas and ruins. Here are some places to check:
- Ancient Vaults — One of the most consistent spots. There’s a repair Anvil just outside the Ancient Vault near the Blacksmith early in the game.
- Bandit camps — Keep an eye around fires and tents inside enemy camps. Several have Anvils tucked nearby.
- Caves and underground areas — Some larger cave systems have an Anvil inside, usually close to loot chests.
- Fort and tower ruins — Old fortifications across the map often have an Anvil inside or just outside their walls.
There are roughly 6 confirmed Anvil locations across Embervale. When you’re out exploring, it’s worth scanning your surroundings near any significant landmark or enemy cluster — they’re not hard to spot once you know what you’re looking for.
One important note: placing a Flame Altar too close to an Anvil can cause it to despawn. If that happens, just place a Workbench in the same area. You’ll still have a repair option without needing the Anvil.
What Happens if Your Gear Fully Breaks?
If a weapon or tool hits zero durability before you repair it, the item gets marked with a cross and becomes completely unusable. You can’t swing it, you can’t use it — nothing.
But here’s the good news: the item stays in your inventory. It doesn’t vanish. You can still walk it over to a Workbench or Anvil and repair it back to full durability. Just don’t be in a fight when it happens.
Some older guides suggest broken items disappear, but that’s no longer the case in the current version of the game. You’re safe as long as you get to a repair station eventually.
Repair Tips to Keep Your Gear in Top Shape
A few habits that make a big difference once you settle into the rhythm of Enshrouded:
- Always repair before heading out. Every time you leave your base, stop at the Workbench first. It takes one button press and costs nothing. Make it automatic.
- Check your hotbar before big fights. A quick glance at those durability bars before a dungeon or boss fight can save you from a gear failure at the worst possible moment.
- Don’t ignore armor. Weapons get the attention, but your armor loses durability every time you take a hit. Keep all of it repaired — not just your sword and pickaxe.
- Tools degrade too. Your Axe, Pickaxe, and other gathering tools all have durability. Heavy mining sessions will drain them faster than you’d expect.
- Know where the nearest Anvil is. On longer trips, make a mental note of Anvil locations you’ve already found. If your gear starts getting low, you know where to go without cutting the run short.
- Don’t craft duplicates unnecessarily. Some players panic and craft a new weapon when the old one gets low. You don’t need to. One good weapon repaired indefinitely is always better than juggling multiples.
Can You Repair Gear on the Go Without a Workbench or Anvil?
No. There’s no field repair mechanic in Enshrouded outside of Workbenches and Anvils. You can’t use consumables to patch up a sword mid-exploration. Your options are either find an Anvil in the wild or fast travel home and hit your Workbench.
This is actually a good reason to plan your routes around known Anvil locations once you’re doing longer trips. It’s also worth noting that Enshrouded has a fast travel system, so the trip back to base isn’t always as painful as it sounds — especially once you’ve placed a few Flame Altars across the map.
Does Repair Cost Anything in Enshrouded?
No. Repairing equipment in Enshrouded is completely free. You don’t spend materials, you don’t spend gold, and you don’t need any special items. It’s one of the more player-friendly systems in the game.
This makes it even more important that you actually use it. Since there’s no cost barrier, there’s no reason to ever let your gear sit at low durability. Just tap the Workbench whenever you’re home and you’re done.
Repair and the Blacksmith — Is There a Connection?
The Blacksmith NPC in Enshrouded is actually the one who first points you toward crafting a Glider — but his connection to repairs is indirect. The Workbench itself handles all repairs without needing any NPC. You don’t need to unlock the Blacksmith or any other Survivor to access the repair system.
However, the Blacksmith does unlock better crafting options, and better gear obviously means less frequent need for repairs in the first place. Finding the Blacksmith early is still worth prioritizing. If you’re still getting your footing in the game, our Enshrouded Tips and Tricks for Beginners covers all the key priorities for the early game.
Is the Repair System the Same on PC and PlayStation?
Yes. The system works the same way across platforms. On PC, press E to interact with a Workbench or Anvil. On controller, use the interaction button (typically the face button that corresponds to confirm/interact in your control scheme). The repair happens instantly either way.
Enshrouded is available on Steam for PC and on PlayStation. If you’re on PC and wondering whether your system can handle the game, check out our Enshrouded PC Requirements Guide.
Repair and the Glider — A Note on Tool Durability
Your Glider also has durability and will wear down with heavy use. Make sure it’s topped up before any long flight session. If you’re still working on getting your Glider upgraded, our full guide on how to get a Glider in Enshrouded walks through all four tiers from the basic version all the way to the legendary Ghost Glider.
Final Thoughts on Repairing Equipment in Enshrouded
The repair system in Enshrouded is one of the least complicated things in the game. Walk up to a Workbench, press E, done. No cost, no menu navigation, no waiting.
Where players go wrong is simply forgetting to do it. You’re mid-exploration, gear at 20%, and then you’re in a tough fight with a nearly broken axe. Build the habit early — repair every time you return to base, keep an eye on durability bars, and learn where the Anvils are for longer runs. Do those three things and your gear will never be the reason a run goes sideways.
