TL;DR
- Tuning in FH6 rewards balance over raw power — grip, braking, and suspension matter more than extra horsepower on Japan’s technical roads.
- Unlock tuning options by installing upgrades first: Race Suspension, Race Differential, adjustable aero, and a tunable gearbox open up the relevant sliders.

Tuning is where good cars become great ones in Forza Horizon 6. Japan’s map puts you on the most technically demanding roads in the series — tight mountain passes, steep touge descents, fast expressways, and narrow city streets. A car that eats up an Australian highway will get destroyed on a Takashiro hairpin. The gap between a car that feels planted and one that fights you all the way through a corner usually comes down to a few slider adjustments, not a bigger engine.
This guide covers every tuning setting in FH6, what each one does, and which direction to push it when something feels wrong. Whether you are building for road racing, drifting, off-road, drag, or touge battles, the same principles apply.

How to Access the Tuning Menu
There are two ways to open the tuning menu in Forza Horizon 6:
- From the main menu: Open the main menu, go to the Cars tab, select your vehicle, and choose Tune Car.
- While driving in free roam: Open the Pause Menu, go to Cars, then select Upgrades & Tuning. This does not teleport you to a garage — you can adjust settings on the fly anywhere in Japan.
Some tuning categories will not appear until the right upgrades are installed. Race Suspension unlocks suspension and alignment sliders. A Race or Sport Differential unlocks differential settings. Adjustable aero parts unlock the downforce sliders. A race or sport transmission unlocks per-gear ratio adjustments. If a category is greyed out, check your upgrade list first.
What Upgrades to Install Before Tuning
Tuning a car with stock parts only gives you partial control. Before you touch the sliders, install these upgrades first. They unlock the settings that actually fix most handling problems:
- Race Suspension or Rally Suspension — unlocks ride height, springs, and damping sliders. Rally suspension can work better than race on stiff supercars because it offers softer range options.
- Race Anti-Roll Bars (ARBs) — always install both front and rear. ARBs are one of the most impactful handling upgrades in FH6 and cost relatively little PI.
- Race Differential — unlocks acceleration and deceleration bias. No serious tune is complete without one. A Rally Differential can feel slightly better on road builds for some cars — try both.
- Adjustable Aero — unlocks front and rear downforce sliders. Only relevant if you plan to run at high speed or on circuit layouts.
- Race or Sport Transmission — unlocks per-gear ratio adjustments. A Sport Transmission is fine if you only need to adjust the final drive. Race Transmission is worth it when gear spacing matters.
- Race Brakes — brakes are more valuable in FH6 than in previous games. Bad stock brakes cause lockup under heavy deceleration, especially on Japan’s downhill zones.
After upgrades, spend as much of your remaining PI budget on weight reduction. Weight is a bigger factor in FH6 than raw power for most road-focused builds. Heavy engine swaps work on sprints and long straights, but they punish you on tight layouts and touge roads.

Tire Pressure
Tire pressure is the fastest setting to understand because you can feel the change immediately behind the wheel.
- Lower pressure — larger contact patch, more grip, more stability. Better for most road racing builds.
- Higher pressure — sharper initial response but less total grip. Can cause understeer if pushed too high.
Starting baselines:
- Stock, street, and rally tires: 26–28 PSI
- Semi-slicks, slicks, and drift tires: 30–33 PSI
If the car is sliding through corners more than expected, drop the rear tire pressure by 1–2 PSI and test again. If it understeers, check the front pressure first. Tire compound also matters — rally tires are often the best PI value for S1 all-round builds on Japan’s roads because they grip well and handle grass and rough edges without losing pace.
Gearing
Gearing controls how your power reaches the wheels. The most impactful single setting is the Final Drive slider.
- Shorter final drive (higher number) — faster acceleration, lower top speed. Better for mountain passes, touge, and city circuits.
- Longer final drive (lower number) — slower acceleration, higher top speed. Better for highway speed zones and drag strips.
For most builds, adjusting only the final drive is enough. If you want to go further, space lower gears closer together for faster acceleration off the line, and spread higher gears further apart for top-end speed. Gearing should always be tuned last — do it on a long straight after everything else is set, so you know the rest of the car is behaving correctly first.
Alignment (Camber, Toe, Caster)
Alignment determines how your tires sit relative to the road. Small changes here have a noticeable effect on cornering feel.
Camber
Camber is the inward or outward tilt of your wheels viewed from the front. Negative camber (tops tilting inward) improves mid-corner grip by keeping more of the tire in contact with the road during a turn. Too much negative camber causes inner tire wear and hurts straight-line traction.
- RWD cars — more front camber than rear. Front needs extra grip to pull the car into corners.
- FWD cars — more rear camber than front. Rear needs help generating grip to balance the driven front wheels.
- AWD cars — balanced camber front and rear. Keep changes small.
- FH6 physics generally prefer less camber than the default values. Start conservatively and only add more if the car still feels like it is pushing wide.
Toe
Toe changes how the wheels point relative to straight ahead.
- Toe-out (negative) — sharper, more responsive turn-in. Less straight-line stability.
- Toe-in (positive) — more stability, slower turn-in.
Start at 0° and adjust conservatively. If the car feels slow to respond to steering inputs, a small amount of front toe-out will sharpen it up. Large toe changes make the car harder to control, not faster.
Caster
Caster improves steering return and dynamic camber gain through fast corners. For controller players, around 7° works well for most builds. Caster rarely needs dramatic changes — leave it close to default unless you notice the steering feeling very slow to self-centre after a corner exit.
Anti-Roll Bars (ARBs)
Anti-roll bars control how much the car leans through corners (body roll).
- Stiffer ARBs — less body lean, sharper platform, but can push the car into understeer. The car feels more rigid and controlled.
- Softer ARBs — more body lean, better rotation into corners, but less stability at high speed.
For tarmac road builds, start with both ARBs near the stiffer end. A stiffer rear ARB relative to the front encourages rotation — useful if the car feels like it does not want to turn in. A stiffer front ARB relative to the rear calms an oversteering car.
Exception for off-road and rally: On dirt, gravel, and loose surfaces, start with both ARBs near the minimum. Stiff ARBs on off-road lift the inside wheels over bumps, which reduces control. The car needs compliance to absorb terrain.
Springs and Ride Height
Springs control how much the car compresses under load. Ride height changes weight transfer, responsiveness, and how much suspension travel you have.
- Stiffer springs — sharper response, less body movement. Better for smooth road surfaces and circuit racing.
- Softer springs — more grip over uneven surfaces. Better for rough roads, off-road builds, and stiff supercars that need compliance.
- Heavier front-end cars — stiffer front springs. The front needs to resist compression to stay balanced.
- Rear-heavy cars — stiffer rear springs for the same reason.
Ride height: lower is better for aerodynamics and centre of gravity. Do not go so low that the car bottoms out over bumps or kerbs. On stiff supercars, consider off-road springs rather than race springs — they offer a softer range that keeps grip over FH6’s rougher road edges.
Damping
Damping controls how quickly the suspension moves, not how far it travels. Springs decide travel distance — dampers decide the speed of that movement.
- Bump damping — controls how fast the suspension compresses when hitting a bump or loading up in a corner. Stiffer bump = sharper turn-in but worse grip over rough surfaces.
- Rebound damping — controls how quickly the suspension extends after compression. Stiffer rebound = more stable platform but less ability to absorb consecutive bumps.
Softer damping generally improves grip on uneven roads and tracks with kerbs. Stiffer damping gives a more responsive, connected feel on smooth tarmac. Going too stiff in either direction makes the car skittish over bumps and kills traction. Make small changes — damping is sensitive and a 1–2 point shift can have a noticeable effect.

Brakes
Brakes matter more in FH6 than in previous Forza Horizon games. Bad stock brakes cause lockup under hard deceleration, especially on downhill sections and rapid downshifts. Install at least a sport brake upgrade on low and mid-class builds.
- Brake balance — shifting balance toward the front gives more aggressive braking at corner entry. Shifting it toward the rear can help rotation mid-drift. For road racing, most players keep brake balance near centre or slightly forward.
- Brake pressure — mostly personal preference. Many players use 100–110% as a baseline. Higher values give more aggressive initial bite but increase lockup risk.
Race brakes are also lighter than stock. On drag builds, fitting race brakes gives a weight saving even if you never brake hard — the weight reduction is the real benefit there.
Differential
The differential controls how power is split between wheels. This is one of the most impactful tuning settings in FH6 and one of the most misunderstood.
Acceleration Bias
Controls how locked the differential is when you are on the throttle. Higher values send power more equally to both driven wheels, which improves traction but reduces rotation.
Deceleration Bias
Controls locking behaviour when you lift off the throttle. Higher values slow the car more aggressively when you release the gas and can cause the rear to step out on corner entry.
Starting baselines by drivetrain:
- RWD road — 50–60% acceleration, 10–20% deceleration. Gives traction without killing rotation.
- AWD road — 60–90% rear centre balance. Never go below 50% rear or the car will understeer badly. Reduce front acceleration bias to allow rotation.
- Drift builds — lock acceleration at 100%. Both rear wheels spinning together is the single biggest factor in a consistent, predictable slide.
Aerodynamics
Aero generates downforce at speed. More downforce equals more grip at high speed, but also more drag, which lowers top speed.
- More front aero than rear — causes oversteer. The front gets more grip than the rear.
- More rear aero than front — causes understeer. The rear gets more planted while the front floats.
- Target a front/rear balance of 0.4–0.45 for most balanced road builds.
By event type:
- Time attack and circuit: near maximum downforce. Grip through corners matters more than drag at the end of a straight.
- Speed traps, highway runs, drag: reduce aero to minimum or remove it entirely. Top speed is the priority.
- Touge and mountain passes: moderate downforce. You need corner grip but speed trap sections exist too.
Diagnosing Handling Problems
Most handling issues in FH6 have a straightforward fix. Use this as a quick reference when something feels wrong:
- Understeer (car does not turn enough) — check tire pressure, add front negative camber, soften front ARB relative to rear, reduce front aero, or increase front acceleration diff bias.
- Oversteer (rear slides on exit) — stiffen rear ARB, reduce rear aero, lower rear acceleration diff bias, or check rear tire pressure.
- Instability under braking — increase brake balance toward front, install better brakes, or soften rear bump damping.
- Runs out of power too early in a gear — shorten the final drive or tighten individual gear ratios.
- Hits rev limiter on a straight — lengthen the final drive or spread higher gears further apart.
- Slow through corners but fast on straights — the car needs grip work, not more power. Upgrade tires, suspension, and ARBs before adding PI to the engine.
Using Community Tunes and Share Codes
If you do not want to build a tune from scratch, FH6 has a large library of community tunes accessible through the Share Code system. Search by car name in the tuning menu to find player-created setups, or look up specific codes from guides and community sources.
Community tunes are a useful starting point, but they are built for a specific driver’s style and may not match yours. Load a tune, drive it on a familiar road, and note what feels off — then use the settings in this guide to adjust from that baseline rather than starting from zero. Tuning for Specific Event Types
Road Racing and Circuit
Prioritise grip and braking. Install race suspension, race ARBs, race differential, and race brakes. Use rally or race tires depending on your PI budget. Moderate to high downforce. Tune for a slightly understeery balance — it is more forgiving and consistent for lap times than a loose rear.
Touge Battles
Japan’s mountain passes punish any car that does not rotate cleanly into hairpins. Softer rear ARB for rotation, moderate downforce, and short final drive for quick corner exits. Drift Builds

Drag Racing
Weight reduction is the priority. Race brakes for the weight saving (not stopping power). Soft ARBs front and rear — you do not need roll resistance on a straight. Off-Road and Cross-Country

The Golden Rule of Tuning
Change one setting at a time. Test it on the same road or corner. Then move to the next. This is the single habit that separates players who improve their setups from those who get lost in the sliders. Making five changes at once means you will never know which one helped and which one made things worse.
The fastest cars in FH6 are rarely the ones with the most horsepower. On Japan’s technical road network, the winning car is the one that brakes cleanly, rotates into corners without drama, and exits with grip still available. Build the chassis first. Add power last.
