GameStop Is Accepting Broken Controllers for Full Trade-In Credit — But Only Until Tonight

    By Krushna Vasudeva · August 15, 2026 · 5 min read
    GameStop

GameStop is running one of its more genuinely useful limited-time promotions right now: bring in any broken or non-functional first-party current-gen controller to a participating US location and walk out with the full trade-in credit value of a working controller. The catch — and it’s a significant one — is that the deal expires at closing time on Saturday, August 15, 2026. If you have busted Joy-Cons sitting in a drawer, a DualSense with broken haptics, or an Xbox controller with a faulty trigger, today is the day to act.

This is a notably consumer-friendly offer by GameStop’s usual standards. Broken peripherals typically receive zero or near-zero trade-in value since they can’t be resold in their current state. Getting the full working-condition credit for a non-functional controller is a meaningful departure from standard trade-in policy, and it’s worth taking seriously if you have anything eligible sitting around.

The Most Valuable Controllers to Trade In Right Now

Not all controllers are created equal under this deal. Here are the current GameStop trade-in values for controllers that will likely generate the most credit, based on current listings:

    • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition DualSense — $88.00 — The highest value controller in GameStop’s current trade listings, making this the single most valuable broken controller you can bring in today if you have one sitting unused
    • Limited Edition Astro Bot DualSense — $71.50
    • Icon Blue DualSense — $60.50
    • Standard DualSense (PS5) — $17.60 minimum
    • Joy-Con (individual) — $13.20 each, meaning a broken pair nets $26.40
    • Xbox Wireless Controller (standard) — values vary by model and colour; check GameStop’s trade value tool online before heading out

The Spider-Man 2 and Astro Bot limited edition DualSense controllers are the standout values here. If you happen to have one of those collecting dust with a broken trigger, stick drift, or dead haptics, trading it in today for $88 or $71.50 respectively is an exceptional return on a peripheral that would otherwise be a paperweight or an expensive repair job.

The Rules: What’s Eligible and What Isn’t

Before making the trip to GameStop, make sure your controller qualifies. The promotion has clear restrictions:

    • First-party controllers only — third-party controllers for any console are not eligible, regardless of how expensive they were originally. PowerA, PDP, Razer, Scuf, and similar brands do not qualify
    • Current generation only — the deal does not extend to controllers from consoles GameStop classifies as retro. That means Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and older hardware controllers are excluded. Current-gen PS5 DualSense, Xbox Wireless Controllers for Series X/S, and Nintendo Joy-Cons and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are the target platforms
    • In-store only — the broken controller trade-in cannot be done online. You must physically travel to a participating GameStop retail location
    • US only — the promotion applies exclusively to participating US GameStop stores
    • While supplies last — the store’s capacity to absorb broken controller trade-ins may vary. Calling ahead to confirm your local store is participating and has room for the deal is worth the two minutes

GameStop store hours vary by location, so check your specific store’s closing time before heading out. The deadline is “closing time on August 15” — not a fixed hour across all locations. A store that closes at 8 PM and a store that closes at 10 PM both qualify, but you need to know which one you’re dealing with to avoid making a wasted trip.

How to Check Trade-In Values Before You Go

GameStop’s trade value tool at gamestop.com/trade allows you to search controllers by name and see the current credit value before you leave the house. The values listed above were accurate at time of writing, but GameStop’s trade-in prices fluctuate and can change without notice. Checking your specific controller model on the site gives you a precise figure to work with rather than relying on estimates.

If you’re planning to use the credit toward a new purchase — which is almost certainly the optimal approach given GameStop’s typical cash vs. credit differential — having a specific item in mind at your local store before you arrive makes the transaction faster and reduces the chance of impulse decisions that eat into the value you just recovered.

What’s Going On With GameStop More Broadly

The broken controller deal comes at a genuinely uncertain moment for GameStop as a business. The company’s CEO Ryan Cohen made headlines recently by describing game software sales as “totally irrelevant” to GameStop’s current revenue model — a statement that reflects the reality that digital distribution has been gradually eroding the company’s core business for over a decade. PlayStation’s announced pivot to fully digital software by January 2028 removes one of GameStop’s largest software revenue streams from the equation entirely.

The retailer has been diversifying aggressively into adjacent areas to compensate — Pokémon Trading Card Game packs and expansion sets have become a meaningful revenue driver, and GameStop stores have increasingly leaned into collectibles, graded cards, and other physical products that can’t be digitally distributed. Deals like today’s broken controller promotion serve double duty: they generate goodwill and foot traffic while also feeding GameStop’s pre-owned peripherals business, where the store can refurbish or part-out non-functional controllers for resale value.

For consumers, the business context doesn’t change the deal’s value. A broken DualSense that was otherwise going in a drawer or getting thrown away is worth real trade credit today. If you have one that qualifies, the window to use it is open until tonight.
