Halo Campaign Evolved: All Difficulty Differences

Halo Campaign Evolved difficulty settings explained — all four levels, what changes on each one, plus how Campaign Remix, LASO, and custom modifiers work.

TL;DR

  • Halo Campaign Evolved has 4 difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Heroic, and Legendary.
  • Each difficulty changes enemy damage, enemy health, enemy count, and aggression.
  • Completing the game on Legendary unlocks a secret ending and the Living Legend achievement.
  • Campaign Remix unlocks after collecting any 3 Skulls — replays missions with randomized enemies and weapons.
  • LASO (Legendary All Skulls On) is the hardest mode — unlocks after finding all 17 required Skulls and rewards the MYTHIC achievement.
  • Custom Difficulty Modifier Presets let you fine-tune damage resistance, shield recharge, and more.

How Many Difficulties Are in Halo Campaign Evolved?

Halo Campaign Evolved brings back the four core difficulties: Easy, Normal, Heroic, and Legendary. Everyone can find a setting that works for them, whether they are a newcomer or a hardcore veteran.

Difficulty levels alter damage as well as enemy frequency, so some missions can feel completely different on a tweaked setting. On top of the four main settings, the game also offers Custom Difficulty Modifier Presets, Campaign Remix, and the fan-favourite LASO mode for players who want to go further.

Difficulty is chosen after selecting New Game from any campaign mode. You can also change it at any point using Mission Select.

Easy Difficulty

The official in-game description for Easy reads: “Your foes cower and fall before your unstoppable onslaught, yet final victory will leave you wanting more.”

Easy is designed for players who are new to first-person shooters or the Halo series. The focus is on the story and exploration rather than punishing combat.

On Easy:

  • Enemies deal less damage and are less aggressive.
  • Combat is very forgiving — mistakes rarely lead to death.
  • Enemy health is reduced.
  • Great entry point for newcomers who just want to see the story.

If you have never played Halo before, Easy lets you get comfortable with the controls and learn how the game works before trying a harder run.

Normal Difficulty

The in-game description reads: “Hordes of aliens vie to destroy you, but nerves of steel and a quick trigger finger give you a solid chance to prevail.”

Normal is the intended experience for most players. The campaign is challenging enough to feel meaningful but not so hard that it stops being fun.

On Normal:

  • Balanced enemy damage and health.
  • Enemy aggression is moderate — they fight back but do not overwhelm you.
  • A fair challenge for players with some FPS experience.
  • The way most players will see the story for the first time.

New to the series or not confident in your FPS reflexes? Normal gets you through the story the way it’s meant to be experienced without constant frustration.

Heroic Difficulty

The in-game description reads: “Your enemies are numerous as they are ferocious; their attacks are devastating. Survival is not guaranteed.”

Heroic is the sweet spot for returning Halo players. It adds real pressure without feeling unfair.

On Heroic:

  • More enemies per encounter compared to Normal.
  • Enemies push harder and are more aggressive.
  • Mistakes cost you shields fast.
  • Requires tactical thinking and smart use of the environment.
  • Designed for players who already understand Halo’s combat mechanics.

Heroic is the tier built for someone who’s played Halo before and wants the campaign to actually push back.

Legendary Difficulty

The in-game description reads: “You face opponents who have never known defeat, who laugh in alien tongue at your efforts to survive. This is suicide.”

Legendary is the hardest of the four standard difficulties. Enemy health, enemy numbers, and aggression all hit their peak here. Encounters that felt manageable on Heroic become full retreats on Legendary.

On Legendary:

  • Enemy health and damage are significantly higher.
  • More enemies per encounter — and they are smarter and more aggressive.
  • A single mistake can end a run very quickly.
  • Requires strong knowledge of weapon types, enemy weaknesses, and positioning.

Legendary Exclusive Rewards

Finish the campaign on Legendary and you get a secret ending along with the Living Legend achievement. There are no hidden armor skins locked behind Legendary — all collectibles can be found regardless of difficulty.

The Living Legend achievement is worth 40 Gamerscore on Xbox. Difficulty achievements also stack — completing on Legendary automatically unlocks the Heroic, Normal, and Easy completion achievements as well.

If you want to take on Legendary with friends to share the pain, our Halo Campaign Evolved co-op guide explains how to set up 4-player online sessions with full crossplay.

Which Difficulty Should You Choose?

Here is a simple breakdown based on your experience level:

  • Easy — Never played Halo or FPS games before. You want to enjoy the story without dying repeatedly.
  • Normal — Some FPS experience. You want the intended campaign experience the developers designed for.
  • Heroic — You have played Halo before and want a real challenge that makes you think.
  • Legendary — Achievement hunter chasing Living Legend, or a veteran who wants the hardest version from the start.

Legendary is really only worth it for two kinds of players: achievement hunters chasing Living Legend, and anyone who wants the hardest version of this story on their first run. Everyone else will get more out of Normal or Heroic.

Custom Difficulty Modifier Presets

On top of the four standard difficulties, Halo Campaign Evolved lets you create difficulty presets that adjust things like friendly fire, damage resistance, and shield recharge rate.

You can access them via Settings → Gameplay → General. There are four modifier presets available, each customizable and saved independently. The five adjustable traits are:

  • Damage Resistance — how much punishment your shields and health can absorb, from 10% up to 2000%.
  • Shield Recharge Rate — how fast your shields come back after taking damage.
  • Friendly Fire — when on, AI allies and co-op players can take damage from your attacks; when off, they cannot.
  • Additional traits covering enemy damage output and encounter variables.

Note: Using Difficulty Modifiers may prevent earning certain achievements. Specifically, LASO-related achievements like MYTHIC cannot be earned with modifier presets active.

Campaign Remix — What Is It?

Campaign Remix unlocks once you collect any three Skulls. Once unlocked, it appears in the main menu and lets you select a campaign mission and replay it with randomized gameplay elements.

When you launch a Remixed mission, three special Skulls are always active:

  • Adaptation — Enemy types are randomized. Grunts might show up where Elites used to be.
  • Reload — Weapon placements and spawns are randomized. Expect weapons in spots you would never expect.
  • Armistice — Enemy factions never fight one another. Everyone is targeting you.

You can also roll for one of two bonus visibility modifiers when deploying a Remixed mission: Spore Visibility, which blankets the level in heavy Flood-style fog, or a second visual effect that changes the look of the environment entirely.

There is an achievement to complete the entire Remixed Campaign without dying — so if you are an achievement hunter, this is something you will need to plan for.

Campaign Remix is best saved for after your first full playthrough. Playing it before you know the campaign makes the randomization harder to appreciate.

LASO — Legendary All Skulls On

LASO is the hardest mode in Halo Campaign Evolved. Unlike the standard Legendary difficulty, LASO combines the game’s toughest setting with 17 mandatory Skull modifiers that make each mission significantly harder.

Halo Studios confirmed that LASO uses a curated set of Skulls rather than all 42, since some Skulls directly contradict each other or trivialize the experience. The team selected Skulls that maintain the spirit of the challenge.

How to Unlock LASO

Before players can access LASO, they must first discover all 17 required Skulls hidden throughout the campaign. Once unlocked, LASO becomes available in the Campaign and Campaign Remix menus.

The 17 Required LASO Skulls and Their Effects

  • Iron — Dying in co-op resets the checkpoint; dying solo restarts the entire level.
  • Black Eye — Shields only recharge when you melee enemies.
  • Fog — Motion Tracker is disabled.
  • Famine — Weapons dropped by enemies contain half the ammo.
  • Thunderstorm — Enemy ranks are upgraded to tougher versions.
  • Mythic — Enemy health is increased.
  • Grunt Birthday Party — Grunt headshots produce celebratory confetti explosions.
  • IWHBYD — Rare and unique dialogue from enemies.
  • Boom — Explosion radius is doubled.
  • Eye Patch — Auto-aim is completely disabled.
  • Grunt Funeral — Grunts explode with a plasma grenade on death.
  • Malfunction — Random weapon-related malfunctions occur during combat.
  • That’s Just… Wrong — Enemies detect the player more easily.
  • Speed Limit — Sprint is disabled.
  • Pop — Shooting Flood in their weak point causes them to explode.
  • Temperamental — Allies attack the player more quickly if friendlies are killed.
  • Johnny Ammo Seed — Additional ammo-related modifier affecting weapon pickups.

Thunderstorm and Mythic stack together to raise both enemy rank and enemy health, meaning fights take longer and hit harder at the same time. Boom doubles explosion radius, which cuts both ways depending on who is holding the grenade. Iron is the most punishing of all — in solo play, every death sends you back to the very start of the level.

LASO Reward

Clearing the entire campaign on LASO unlocks the MYTHIC achievement. Difficulty Modifiers cannot be used if players want to earn the MYTHIC achievement for completing the campaign on LASO.

Achievements Tied to Difficulty

There are several achievements in Halo Campaign Evolved that are locked to specific difficulty completions. Here is what you are working toward:

  • Greenhorn — Complete the campaign on Easy.
  • Birth of a Spartan — Complete the campaign on Normal.
  • Believe in a Hero — Complete the campaign on Heroic.
  • Living Legend — Complete the campaign on Legendary (also unlocks a secret ending).
  • MYTHIC — Complete the campaign on LASO.

Difficulty achievements stack — completing on Legendary unlocks all four completion achievements at once. You do not need to replay the game four separate times for these.

Before you start your Legendary run, make sure your setup is ready. Check the Halo Campaign Evolved armor skins guide to grab any limited-time free skins before they expire, and our beginner’s guide for tips that apply at any difficulty.
