Hell Let Loose Vietnam Cam Ranh Port Guide — the final launch map covered. Docks, dunes, southern waterway, industrial close-quarters, boat tactics, NVA tunnel strategy, and tips for both factions.

TL;DR

  • Cam Ranh Port is the most visually distinct map in the launch lineup — the only one with desert dunes.
  • Four terrain zones: militarised dockyard, southern waterway, dry creek beds, and rolling sand dunes.
  • The southern waterway is the most open boat combat zone in the entire launch map pool.
  • Industrial dockyard sections are the most intense close-quarters zones outside Huế Outskirts.
  • Dunes and open coastal terrain provide longer sightlines where US weapons have the range advantage.
  • Patrol boats on the southern waterway are not optional on this map — they decide who flanks whom.
  • NVA tunnels inside industrial dock buildings are some of the hardest spawn points to eliminate in the game.
  • Based on the Cam Ranh Bay Logistics Facility — one of the most strategic US bases in South Vietnam by 1969.
  • Winning three matches here unlocks the “Re-Port for Duty” achievement.

Hell Let Loose Vietnam Cam Ranh Port is the final launch map and the one that surprises players most on first arrival. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam built Cam Ranh Port around the Cam Ranh Bay Logistics Facility — one of the most important US military installations in South Vietnam. The map is unlike anything else in the launch lineup. Sand dunes. Supply docks. Dry creek beds. A large open waterway to the south. And industrial dockyard structures that create the tightest, most intense close-quarters combat zones on any launch map. Players who arrive expecting jungle are in for a genuine shock. Cam Ranh Port is diverse, fast-shifting, and one of the few maps in the game where boat superiority on the waterway can directly decide whether a sector holds or falls.

Historical Background: Cam Ranh Bay Logistics Facility

Cam Ranh Bay is located on a natural peninsula in Khánh Hòa Province in southern Vietnam. Its deep-water bay made it one of the most strategically valuable harbour locations in Southeast Asia. During the Vietnam War, the United States developed it into one of the largest and most important military installations in South Vietnam.

By 1969, Cam Ranh Bay was simultaneously a major US Air Force base with a 10,000-foot runway, a significant Naval base capable of berthing large deep-draft vessels through the DeLong piers, and a massive logistics storage facility handling munitions, fuel, and general supplies for operations across the country. Helicopter units, transport aircraft, fighter aircraft, and naval vessels all operated from or through the facility at various points during the war.

The base’s very scale — and its position as a critical logistics hub — made it a target. Viet Cong sappers attacked the facility across its operational life, including a notable sapper attack in August 1969 that hit the 6th Convalescent Center on the peninsula and damaged many buildings. The attack method was a pattern used across Vietnam: sappers slipped through the barbed-wire perimeter at night and moved through the base throwing explosive charges at key targets before withdrawal. The historical sapper attacks on Cam Ranh Bay are directly reflected in the NVA tunnel and infiltration tactics that work so well on the in-game map.

The in-game version takes creative liberty with the historical record — the real Cam Ranh Bay was not the site of large-scale ground combat between US and NVA forces. But the combination of dockyard infrastructure, coastal terrain, dunes, and waterways is authentically drawn from the real base’s geography and character.

Map Overview: Four Terrain Zones

Cam Ranh Port is the most varied map in the launch lineup in terms of its visual and tactical identity. No two zones feel the same. Understanding each one before the match starts is the foundation of effective play here.

Militarised Dockyard and Industrial Buildings

The dockyard and industrial sections are the heart of the map and the source of its most intense fighting. Dense militarised areas — buildings, warehouses, dock structures, supply facilities, and military infrastructure — create a close-quarters labyrinth that is simultaneously the hardest terrain to attack and the most valuable ground to defend.

The industrial dock sections on Cam Ranh Port produce the most intense close-quarters combat in the launch lineup alongside Huế Outskirts’s concrete industrial areas. Sightlines inside dock buildings and between structures are measured in metres rather than hundreds of metres. The NVA’s close-range weapons — the AK-47, K50M, RPD, and shotgun — perform at their absolute best here. Any US squad trying to clear a dockyard building against entrenched NVA defenders with tunnel reinforcements arriving inside needs smoke, grenades, and coordination to achieve what would be trivial in open terrain.

The dockyard section is also where Garrison and tunnel placement is most valuable on this map. A Garrison inside a dock warehouse survives artillery strikes far better than one in the open dunes. An NVA tunnel entrance inside an industrial building on the dockyard produces soldiers right in the contested zone with cover available from the moment they emerge. Both factions should race to establish infrastructure inside dockyard structures at the start of the match.

Southern Waterway — Wide Open Boat Combat

The large waterway to the south is the most open boat combat zone in the entire launch map pool. Unlike the river foliage ambush environments of Van Tuong or the narrow creek crossings of other maps, the southern waterway at Cam Ranh Port opens up into a wide expanse that allows genuine open-water patrol boat skirmishes between opposing vessels.

Boat combat on the southern waterway is markedly different from boat usage elsewhere in the game. On most maps, patrol boats are flanking tools used for short insertions followed by concealment. On Cam Ranh Port’s southern waterway, boats can engage each other at longer ranges across open water in a way that rewards boat crew coordination and gunner accuracy rather than concealment.

Control of the southern waterway determines the southern flanking route for the entire match. The faction that dominates the waterway can move squads along the southern approach without the enemy being able to interdict them. The faction that loses the waterway has its southern flank turned repeatedly. This makes patrol boat deployment to the southern waterway the single highest-priority resource decision at the start of a Cam Ranh Port match.

Dry Creek Beds

The dry creek beds running through the map are natural movement corridors and ambush positions that both factions should track. A creek bed provides cover from fire on either side — infantry in a dry creek can advance along it with protection from direct fire above the bank level, making it a sheltered route between the dunes and the dockyard sections.

Creek beds are also natural tunnel placement zones for the NVA. A tunnel entrance at the bottom of a dry creek bed is concealed from aerial observation and difficult to spot from ground level without descending into the creek. NVA engineers who place tunnel entrances in creek bed positions give their squad a concealed spawn route that US forces rarely prioritise checking when they are focused on the dockyard or the waterway.

Both factions should move through creek beds rather than across open dune ground when transitioning between the coastal sections and the dockyard. The creek provides the same function as the bamboo forest on Quảng Ngãi — a covered route between terrain zones that avoids the exposure of crossing open ground.

Rolling Sand Dunes

The sand dunes are the most visually striking feature of Cam Ranh Port and the terrain type that surprises players most on first arrival. No other launch map has desert dune terrain. The dunes represent the natural coastal landscape of the Cam Ranh peninsula beyond the constructed military and port infrastructure.

The dunes create longer sightlines than any other section of the map. The open coastal dune terrain is where US long-range weapons — the M16A1, M14, and M60 — have their clearest advantage. NVA players on the dunes are exposed in a way they are not inside the dockyard or along the creek beds. US infantry and armour advancing through dune terrain have line of sight and engagement distances that favour their weapon loadouts.

The dunes also provide natural cover in the form of ridge lines and depressions between dune formations. A squad using dune ridgelines for cover can advance across the coastal terrain in bounds with overhead protection between ridges. The key is never skyling on a dune ridge — appearing as a silhouette against the sky on a sand dune is one of the clearest targets any weapon can find on this map.

How to Win as US Armed Forces on Cam Ranh Port

Dominate the Southern Waterway with Boats

Deploy patrol boats to the southern waterway immediately at match start. Do not wait. The southern waterway is the most important single terrain feature on Cam Ranh Port for US mobility, and losing control of it to NVA boats at the match opening costs the US team its most effective flanking route for the rest of the match.

US patrol boats on the open waterway can operate more aggressively than on the narrow river channels of other maps. The wider expanse allows boats to engage at range and manoeuvre, giving the boat gunner more effective firing angles than a narrow channel permits. Keep boats active on the waterway throughout the match — not just at the start. A US boat that continuously patrols the southern waterway denies the NVA the ability to use that route even after the initial sector fights are settled.

Use patrol boats as mobile spawn points anchored in protected waterway positions near sector objectives. A boat positioned off the southern approach to a contested dockyard sector gives US infantry a spawn that is outside the NVA tunnel coverage zone and allows rapid reinforcement of the southern approach without crossing dune terrain under fire.

Use Helicopter Insertions to Bypass the Dockyard Approach

The dockyard approaches on Cam Ranh Port are the most dangerous chokepoints for US infantry assaulting NVA-held industrial positions. Narrow dock lanes, building interiors, and NVA tunnel reinforcements make frontal dockyard assaults expensive. Helicopter insertions that drop US squads onto the roof of a dockyard building or into an uncontested dock section behind the NVA defensive line bypass the frontal approach entirely.

A US helicopter that delivers a squad into the dockyard from an unexpected angle — landing behind or beside a defended building rather than in front of it — creates a pincer that NVA defenders inside the structure cannot respond to quickly. Vary landing zones across different dockyard sections on each insertion to prevent the NVA from pre-positioning RPG teams at predictable landing spots.

Control the Dunes for Long-Range Suppression

US long-range weapons have their strongest advantage on Cam Ranh Port in the dune sections. A Machine Gunner positioned on a dune ridge with line of sight over the flat ground between the dunes and the dockyard can suppress NVA infantry attempting to cross that transitional zone. A sniper pair in the dunes covering dock approaches creates the same kind of overwatch that Recon does on the Đắk Tô runway.

Establish a Machine Gunner presence in the dune sections early and maintain it throughout the match. It is not about killing large numbers of enemies from the dunes — it is about making the approaches to the dockyard from the coastal side cost the NVA enough that they cannot push freely between terrain zones without committing resources to suppress the US overwatch position first.

Use Garrisons Inside Dockyard Structures

Garrisons placed inside dockyard warehouses and industrial buildings are the most durable spawn infrastructure on the map. They survive artillery longer than open-ground Garrisons, keep US forces close to contested dock objectives, and are difficult for NVA infantry to locate without a systematic search of the building. A Support player who gets supply crates into a warehouse Garrison early in the match creates an anchor the whole US team benefits from for extended periods.

How to Win as NVA on Cam Ranh Port

Own the Industrial Dockyard from the Start

The dockyard is NVA home ground on Cam Ranh Port. Short engagement distances, building cover, and the natural fit of NVA close-range weapons with narrow dock lanes and industrial interiors make the dockyard sections the strongest NVA terrain on the map. Get into the dockyard buildings early, place tunnel entrances inside them, and make every US attempt to clear the docks as costly as possible.

The historical sapper attacks on the real Cam Ranh Bay — small groups of NVA soldiers slipping through the perimeter at night, moving quickly through the base, hitting targets, and withdrawing — is the operational template for NVA dockyard play. Move fast through the dock structures, strike US Garrisons and supply runners, and use tunnels to disappear before the US team can mount a coherent response.

Build Tunnels in Creek Beds and Dock Buildings

The two best tunnel placement environments on Cam Ranh Port are inside dockyard buildings and along the dry creek beds. Creek bed tunnel entrances are hidden from aerial observation and concealed from casual infantry search. Dockyard tunnel entrances place NVA soldiers directly in the contested objective zone with building cover available immediately.

Build the three-tier tunnel network with the primary entrance inside the active sector’s dockyard building, the secondary in a creek bed connecting to the next sector, and the tertiary near the waterway edge for boats-and-tunnels combined flanking. This three-tier structure means that losing one tunnel to a US search-and-destroy operation does not collapse the NVA spawn network — there are always fallback positions in place.

Contest the Waterway with Patrol Boats

Do not cede the southern waterway to US boats without a fight. NVA patrol boats on the open waterway can engage US vessels and deny the US team its fastest southern flanking route. An NVA boat that holds a position in the southern waterway forces the US to commit helicopter resources to deal with it or accept that the southern approach is contested.

Use patrol boats offensively on this map. A NVA boat pushing up the southern waterway during a dockyard sector push creates a two-axis threat — infantry from the dockyard and boat pressure from the water — that US defenders cannot fully address without splitting their resources. Time boat movements with infantry pushes rather than running them independently.

Use Creek Beds for Covered Transitions

Moving between the dockyard and the dune sections of the map across open ground is dangerous for NVA infantry. The creek beds are the NVA’s answer to that exposure. Use creek beds to transition between terrain zones in concealment rather than crossing open dune terrain under potential US overwatch fire. Move squads along creek bed routes to approach dockyard objectives from angles that avoid the open approaches US Machine Gunners and snipers are watching.

Avoid Extended Engagements in the Dunes

The open dune sections are not NVA-friendly ground. US long-range weapons, US armour, and US helicopter overwatch all perform better in the dunes than NVA loadouts do. NVA players caught in open dune terrain in an extended firefight are fighting at a systematic disadvantage. The correct NVA response to losing a dune exchange is to withdraw into a creek bed or toward the dockyard, not to push further across open coastal ground.

This is not to say the NVA should never be in the dunes — objective sectors in certain mode layers may require it — but time in open dune terrain should be minimised, and every dune crossing should use the natural ridge depressions between dune formations for cover rather than moving in a straight line across the exposed sand.

General Tips for Both Factions

The southern waterway decides the match as much as the dockyard. Both factions should treat boat deployment to the southern waterway as a match-opening priority. The team that dominates the waterway has a flanking route available for the entire match. The team that loses it fights from one direction for the rest of the game.

Cam Ranh Port is the most “combined arms” map in the launch lineup. Patrol boats, helicopters, armour, infantry, and dedicated anti-armour roles all have genuinely different and valuable functions here. A team that plays Cam Ranh Port with only infantry and ignores the boats, helicopter insertions, and armour is leaving most of its tactical toolkit unused. Bring all of it.

Watch for sappers in your rear. The historical pattern at the real Cam Ranh Bay was small groups of sappers bypassing the perimeter and striking inside the base. On the in-game map, NVA tunnel placement in creek beds and behind the dockyard line produces exactly this effect — NVA soldiers appearing inside what the US team considers secured territory. Both factions should maintain rear security awareness rather than assuming cleared terrain stays clear.

Dune ridgelines are cover, not positions. Standing on a dune ridge creates a skylined silhouette that every weapon on the map can engage. Dune ridgelines should be used for cover while moving between positions, not as firing positions themselves. Move to the crest, fire, and withdraw behind the ridge — do not hold on top of a dune for extended periods.

The dock buildings are not cleared until the tunnel is destroyed. Clearing enemy infantry from a dockyard building and then advancing is only half the job. If there is an NVA tunnel entrance inside that building, it will produce more enemy soldiers within minutes. After clearing a building, sweep for tunnel infrastructure before moving on. A cleared building with an active tunnel is not cleared — it is temporarily quiet.
