    TL;DR

    • Đắk Tô Airfield is the most open map in the launch lineup — a complete change of pace from the jungle maps.
    • The runway is the central combat zone and the deadliest piece of ground on the map to cross unsupported.
    • Impact craters and destroyed vehicles are the only cover on the airstrip itself — use them or die on them.
    • Armour and recon units have their biggest advantage across the entire launch map pool on this map.
    • The jungle edge and hilltop ridgelines surrounding the airfield provide elevated overwatch over the open runway.
    • Smoke and suppressive fire are mandatory for any infantry crossing attempt across open ground.
    • NVA tunnels placed at the jungle edge or inside fortified positions produce soldiers that outflank armour.
    • The surrounding dense vegetation prevents the map from becoming a pure vehicle arena — infantry still matter.
    • Đắk Tô was the second map made public, used in the crossplay playtest of July 24–27, 2026.
    • Winning three matches here unlocks the dedicated Đắk Tô achievement.

Hell Let Loose Vietnam Đắk Tô Airfield is the map that changes everything. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam built its other five launch maps around dense jungle, flooded lowlands, river networks, and coastal terrain. Đắk Tô Airfield breaks that pattern with a long, open runway that dominates the centre of the battlefield and forces both factions to fight in the open ground they have been sheltering from all game. Armour dominates. Snipers have scope. Machine gunners pin down entire sectors from long range. And infantry who try to cross without coordination, smoke, and suppressive fire get eliminated before they understand where the fire came from. This guide covers the terrain, the key positions, and how each faction should approach the most tactically distinct map in the game.

Historical Background: The Battle of Đắk Tô, November 1967

The Battle of Đắk Tô was a series of major engagements fought between November 3 and 23, 1967, in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam near the Cambodian border. It was one of the bloodiest single battles of the entire war to that point, involving North Vietnamese forces attacking the US airfield base at Đắk Tô and the surrounding fortified hilltop positions.

The real battle centred on close-quarters jungle combat and ambushes launched from carefully prepared North Vietnamese positions dug into the hillsides — with US forces responding with massive artillery strikes, air support, and B-52 bombardments. The battle’s climax came in the brutal fighting for Hill 875, a steep, heavily fortified ridge where the North Vietnamese had built an elaborate network of fighting positions and bunkers reinforced with overhead cover to survive direct artillery hits.

The airfield at Đắk Tô served as a forward operations base and was a critical logistical and strategic asset. Constant NVA bombardment of the base — mortars, rockets, and artillery — left the airstrip scarred with impact craters and strewn with destroyed vehicles. That bombardment damage is present in the in-game map, where craters and wrecked vehicles provide the only meaningful cover on the open runway itself.

The historical battle was considered a US tactical victory by commanders who measured success in enemy casualties. It was in reality a costly engagement that killed over 300 Americans and was later understood as part of a deliberate NVA strategy to draw US forces away from population centres ahead of the Tet Offensive.

Map Overview: Terrain and Key Zones

Đắk Tô Airfield has three distinct terrain zones that combine into a battlefield unlike anything else in the launch lineup. Understanding all three — and when to use each — is the foundation of winning here.

The Runway — Central Kill Zone

The long, stretching airstrip runs through the heart of the map and is the focal point of every sector battle. It is deliberately exposed. The developers confirmed this directly: squads crossing the runway unsupported will be punished. There is no ambiguity in the design. The airstrip is designed to kill infantry who do not respect it.

Impact craters and destroyed vehicles from constant artillery bombardment are scattered along the runway. These provide the only real cover on the open tarmac — they are the terrain features that make runway crossings survivable rather than suicidal. Using them correctly means moving between craters in bounds rather than sprinting across open ground in a straight line. Moving between craters when enemy armour or machine gunners do not have line of sight on your position, rather than when they do.

The runway is the shortest route between sectors. It is also the most dangerous. Both factions will be tempted to use it for speed. Both factions will pay for using it without preparation. The teams that win on Đắk Tô are usually the ones that control what happens on the runway rather than simply trying to cross it faster than the enemy.

The Surrounding Jungle Edge and Ridgelines

The dense vegetation and elevated ridgelines surrounding the airstrip are what prevent Đắk Tô from becoming a pure vehicle arena. The jungle edge runs along the perimeter of the open airfield area, providing concealment for infantry approaching from the flanks and elevated positions that look down onto the runway and the airfield structures.

Elevated positions on the jungle ridgeline edge provide line of sight over large sections of the open runway. A sniper pair or machine gunner team at a ridgeline position with view of the airstrip can control infantry movement across the runway for extended periods. This is why controlling the ridgeline and jungle edge positions is as important as controlling the airstrip objectives themselves — the elevated positions around the runway dictate what can move across it.

The climbing mechanic introduced in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is particularly relevant on Đắk Tô. Elevated positions along the jungle edge provide sightlines across the runway that are otherwise impossible to reach. Players who learn which obstacles and ridgeline sections are climbable on this map gain access to overwatch positions that ground-level players cannot contest without climbing themselves or using indirect fire.

    Fortified Positions and Hilltop Installations

The real Battle of Đắk Tô was defined by NVA forces fighting from hilltop fortifications and bunker complexes dug into the ridgelines surrounding the airfield. The in-game map reflects this with fortified positions and hilltop installations that provide close-range fighting zones distinct from the open runway and the surrounding jungle.

These fortified positions combine the close-quarters combat that characterises the jungle maps with the elevated sightlines that the hilltop terrain enables. Fighting inside a fortified position on Đắk Tô feels more like Huế Outskirts’s industrial sections than like the open runway — short engagement distances, structure cover, and the need to clear rooms and corridors rather than win firefights at range.

The Game Director confirmed that on Đắk Tô, teams can spend extended periods fighting over a village sector at the bottom of the map rather than across the runway itself, depending on which objectives are active in a given mode. The map does not force every engagement onto the open airstrip — it gives both factions choices about where to fight, which creates meaningful strategic decisions about when to contest the exposed runway and when to work through the covered flanks.

How to Win as US Armed Forces on Đắk Tô Airfield

    Deploy Armour Early and Aggressively

Đắk Tô Airfield is the US armour’s best map in the launch lineup. The open runway and surrounding areas give tanks the long sightlines and manoeuvring room that dense jungle maps deny completely. A US tank on the open airstrip with infantry screening it is one of the most powerful combinations in the game — the tank provides suppressive fire across the runway while infantry advances between crater positions using the tank as covering fire.

Armour should be deployed as early as the match allows. A tank on the runway before the NVA establishes anti-armour Grenadier positions creates a window of dominance over the open ground that shapes the sector fight in the US team’s favour. The tank’s biggest vulnerability on Đắk Tô is NVA RPG teams using the jungle edge for covered approaches — keep infantry screens around the tank at all times and never push armour forward without infantry clearing the flanks.

Use Recon Squads for Runway Overwatch

Đắk Tô is the map where Recon squads have their clearest impact across the launch lineup. A Spotter and Sniper pair positioned on the ridgeline above the runway has line of sight over crossing attempts, Garrison construction, tunnel placement, and vehicle movement across the entire central zone. The Spotter marks targets for the Sniper and calls in artillery coordinates. The Sniper eliminates infantry attempting to cross the runway and high-value targets like NVA Grenadiers and Squad Leaders.

Send your Recon squad to the highest climbable ridgeline position with line of sight over the runway as a priority. That position is worth more than almost any single infantry squad pushing across the airstrip, because it directly controls what every other squad on both teams can do in the central zone.

Use Smoke Grenades for Every Runway Crossing

Smoke is the single most important consumable item on Đắk Tô for US infantry. A smoke screen placed across a runway crossing point breaks line of sight from NVA machine gun positions, sniper overwatch, and tank sights simultaneously. Infantry can move between crater positions during the smoke window with far lower casualties than any unsmoked crossing attempt.

Coordinate smoke deployment as a squad action rather than an individual one. Two or three smoke grenades thrown simultaneously at the same crossing zone create a wider and longer-lasting screen than a single grenade. Mortar smoke rounds from a team positioned behind the runway edge can cover even larger zones. Never commit an infantry squad to a runway crossing without smoke unless the NVA positions overlooking that crossing are already suppressed.

    Establish Garrisons in Fortified Positions

The fortified hilltop positions and airfield structures are the best Garrison locations on the map. They provide cover for the spawn infrastructure, keep US forces close to contested runway objectives, and are harder to destroy with artillery than open-ground Garrisons. A Squad Leader who reaches a fortified position and plants a Garrison inside it creates an anchor that sustains the sector push for the rest of that engagement.

The Support role carrying supply crates is critical on Đắk Tô. Getting supplies to Squad Leaders across the open runway is dangerous — helicopter supply drops are often the safest and fastest way to deliver construction resources to a Squad Leader who has reached a fortified position but cannot wait for a supply runner to cross the airstrip.

    Use Helicopters for Flanking Insertions

The helicopter is less central to Đắk Tô than to Van Tuong or Hue Outskirts, but it remains a powerful tool. Rather than inserting squads directly onto the runway objectives, which exposes the helicopter to every NVA anti-air position in the map, use the helicopter to insert squads into the jungle edge flanks and ridgeline positions that then advance on runway objectives from covered angles.

A helicopter that delivers a Recon squad to the highest ridgeline position overlooking the runway performs one of the most valuable actions available to the US team on this map. That insertion does not require hovering over contested ground — land behind the ridgeline, let the squad climb to the overwatch position, and depart before the NVA can respond.

How to Win as NVA on Đắk Tô Airfield

Build Tunnels at the Jungle Edge

The jungle edge surrounding the airfield is the NVA’s most important terrain on Đắk Tô. It provides concealment for tunnel placement, covered approaches to the runway flank, and elevated positions that overlook the airstrip. Build your three-tier tunnel network with entrances inside the jungle edge vegetation rather than in the open — a tunnel entrance in dense vegetation near the runway flank is invisible to US helicopter spotting and difficult for infantry patrols to find without committing to searching the entire jungle perimeter.

The primary tunnel should be in jungle edge vegetation closest to the active sector’s flank. The secondary should be further back in the jungle, providing a fallback spawn if the front tunnel is discovered. The tertiary should be positioned near a fortified structure or hilltop approach that the NVA can use to contest elevated positions on the ridgeline before the US team establishes overwatch.

    Use Grenadiers Against Armour Aggressively

US armour is the single biggest threat to the NVA on Đắk Tô. A US tank on the open runway suppresses infantry movement across the airstrip and provides fire support that infantry alone cannot counter. Two NVA Grenadiers with RPGs working as a team from the jungle edge are the correct answer to a US tank on the runway — one fires to damage, the second fires before the tank crew can react to the first shot.

The jungle edge is the key to anti-armour positioning. A Grenadier in dense vegetation at the runway edge has a covered approach route and can fire from concealment before the tank crew spots the launch position. After firing, immediately withdraw deeper into the jungle — a tank that survives an RPG hit will direct its fire at the launch position within seconds.

NVA Grenadiers should be the first role prioritised when US armour appears on the runway. Communicate the tank’s position immediately in squad chat. Move two Grenadiers to the jungle edge flanks. Coordinate the shots to arrive simultaneously.

Control the Ridgeline Before US Recon Arrives

The ridgeline overwatch positions above the runway are the most powerful positions on the map for both factions. If the US Recon squad reaches the highest ridgeline position first, they will control runway crossing attempts for extended periods. The NVA must contest these positions before US Recon establishes itself.

NVA Recon squads should move to the ridgeline via the jungle edge as early in the match as possible. A Spotter and Sniper pair on the ridgeline from the NVA side can eliminate US troops attempting runway crossings with the same effectiveness that US Recon provides. The faction that establishes ridgeline control first has the dominant position for the runway fight that follows.

If the US establishes ridgeline Recon before you do, use mortar fire to suppress the position. The NVA mortar squad, with an Observer calling corrections, can deliver accurate indirect fire onto ridgeline positions that infantry cannot reach safely. Clearing an enemy Recon pair from an exposed ridgeline with mortar fire removes the runway overwatch and reopens crossing routes that were effectively closed.

Use the Fortified Positions for Close-Range Defence

The hilltop fortifications and airfield structures are where NVA weapons perform best on Đắk Tô. Inside a fortified structure, the AK-47 and K50M operate at ranges where their close-quarters performance matches or beats US rifles. NVA players defending a fortified position from inside — with tunnel entrances keeping reinforcements arriving from unexpected angles — can hold these positions against US attacks that have superior firepower on the open runway.

A fortified position with an NVA tunnel entrance inside it on Đắk Tô is one of the hardest defensive positions in the game. The US must assault uphill or across open ground to reach it, while NVA defenders spawn directly inside and are positioned with cover advantage from the moment they arrive.

Use Mortar Squads to Deny the Runway

The open runway is the best mortar target in the launch map pool. A Mortar squad with a clear Observer callout on enemy troops crossing the airstrip can deliver accurate fire onto an exposed zone that has no natural cover from indirect fire. Impact craters provide protection from small arms — they provide no protection from mortar shells landing in them.

Establish the Mortar squad in concealed jungle terrain behind the ridgeline with the Observer positioned at an elevated jungle edge location with line of sight over the runway crossing zone. The Observer calls targets, the Mortar squad fires, and the runway becomes impassable without smoke. This denies the US side its main crossing route while the NVA advances through the jungle edge flanks.

    General Tips for Both Factions

Never cross the runway without smoke or suppression. This is the single rule that overrides everything else on Đắk Tô. The open airstrip is the most dangerous ground in the launch lineup for unsupported infantry. Every review of the map, every developer statement, and every tactical guide agrees: smoke, suppressive fire, and coordinated bounds are mandatory. Going straight across alone is how you feed the enemy team kills without contributing anything.

Use craters as intermediate cover. The impact craters and destroyed vehicles on the runway are not decoration — they are the only cover between the two sides of the airstrip. Move between craters in bounds. Establish suppression from one crater before moving to the next. Treat runway movement like crossing any other exposed ground in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, except that the distances are longer and the defenders have better sightlines.

Garrison placement in fortified positions wins the map. A Garrison in an open field on Đắk Tô will be destroyed by artillery within minutes. A Garrison inside a fortified structure survives far longer and puts infantry much closer to objectives. The team with better Garrison placement in covered positions almost always wins the runway fight, because better spawns mean less time crossing the airstrip to rejoin the fight.

Communication across the whole runway matters more here. On jungle maps, combat often stays local — a squad can fight independently within a dense sector without the whole team needing to know what is happening. On Đắk Tô’s open airstrip, tank positions, Recon locations, artillery impact zones, and machine gun positions all affect every squad simultaneously. Call out immediately when armour appears, when a Recon pair is spotted on the ridgeline, and when smoke is going down for a crossing attempt.

Đắk Tô rewards different skills than the other maps. Players who learned the game on Thanh Hóa Bridge or Van Tuong developed instincts built around close terrain and concealment. Đắk Tô punishes those instincts in the open zones and rewards patience, long-range awareness, and coordinated movement that is different from what works in the jungle. Expect your first few matches here to feel different and adapt accordingly.
