- TL;DR
- Dokyo is fought during the In the Light of an Icy Moon mission in the Arashiyama swamps.
- This is a chase fight, not a slug-fest — she keeps her distance and throws gimmicks at you.
- The core loop: solve the mechanic, close the gap, land a few hits, repeat.
- Use the Oni Bow to shoot her floating balloon and knock her down for a free melee window.
- Use Oni Vision to spot the real Dokyo when she creates copies — she always glows gold.
- When she summons Kubi Akari (flying heads), run them toward her so they explode on her instead of you.
- During the meteor attack, find the one uncracked rock and hide behind it.
- Phase 2 adds faster pressure, a second balloon, red mask enemies, and giant falling meteors.
- Deflect her spiky ball — in Phase 2 you must deflect it twice before it damages her.
- The Flashing Void Oni Armament is great here — it teleports Musashi straight to her when released.
How to beat Dokyo in Onimusha Way of the Sword is one of the most unique challenges in the entire game. Dokyo — The Transgressor is not like the heavy hitters you’ve faced before. She doesn’t stand and trade blows. She sprints around the arena, keeps her distance, and throws gimmick after gimmick at you. The whole fight is built around chasing her, solving whatever trick she throws out, closing the gap for a few quick hits, and doing it all over again. If you try to play it like a standard sword fight, she will just keep backing off and shooting you.
You fight her at the Arashiyama swamps during the In the Light of an Icy Moon mission — one of the last major story missions before the final boss. If you need to brush up on how that area works before the fight, our guide on the hidden path in the Light of an Icy Moon has you covered. And if your combat fundamentals need a refresh, check our guide on mastering Issen, parry, and deflect.
Who Is Dokyo in Onimusha Way of the Sword
Dokyo is the strategist behind much of the Genma threat in Kyoto. She is the mastermind responsible for creating the chimeras that have been tearing through the city. By the time you reach her, you’ve already fought most of what she built. She assists Yoshitsune and operates in the Arashiyama area during the final stretch of the story. When her real name is revealed after the fight — Kaguya — it adds a layer to her character that makes the encounter feel earned.
She’s not the hardest boss in the game in terms of raw damage, but she’s full of tricks. The fight feels closer to a bullet-hell game than a sword duel. Every time she attacks, there’s a mechanic to solve before you can punish her. Players who try to rush her without understanding each trick will burn through healing items fast.
Dokyo Boss Overview
- Quest: In the Light of an Icy Moon
- Location: Arashiyama Swamps
- Phases: 2 (Phase 2 triggers when she wraps herself in red energy)
- Key Mechanic: Chase fight — solve each gimmick, then close the gap for short punish windows
- No Issen Break: There is no Issen Break available in this fight — preserve your Oni Awakening for burst damage
Best Setup Before the Fight
Before walking into the Arashiyama swamps, sort your loadout:
- Oni Bow — essential for this fight. You’ll be using it constantly to shoot the balloon, take out red mask enemies in Phase 2, and punish her while she’s airborne.
- Flashing Void Oni Armament — this spear teleports Musashi straight to Dokyo when released. Since she’s constantly creating distance, this is the best tool for bypassing all of that and getting into melee range instantly. It also lets you cancel some of her attacks.
- Wind-Whipper — good for converting knockdowns into extra damage. Wind-Whipper’s swirling attack works well here.
- Earth-Shakers, Still Water, or Firebird Flute all work if you prefer them over the above options.
- Stock your healing items — Phase 2 gets significantly more chaotic.
- Check that your restorative timers are not about to expire. Buff timers dropping mid-fight during her projectile spam is one of the most common causes of a wasted attempt.
There is no Issen Break in this fight, so don’t bank on that mechanic at all. Save your Oni Awakening and use it for burst damage windows instead. For more on how to build your loadout before late-game fights, our charms guide and best builds and Oni Armaments and Oni Power abilities guide are both worth checking before this fight.
Core Strategy — The Chase Loop
The entire fight follows one repeating loop. Solve the mechanic she throws at you → close the gap → land two or three hits → she teleports away → repeat. That’s it. Don’t try to force a long combo on her. After a few hits she will reposition, and if you’re mid-combo when that happens you’ll get caught by whatever gimmick comes next.
When she starts firing a stream of ranged attacks, swing just before one of the projectiles connects. A clean Issen at that moment cancels her entire attack string and opens her up for a melee window. This is the fastest and most reliable way to drain her health throughout the fight.
One important warning: if her usual ranged attack takes too long to appear, hold your guard. She sometimes delays her next pattern and then suddenly appears right next to Musashi with a staff swing. Players who stay aggressive during that delay tend to eat the full hit. When the flow pauses, default to defense first.
All of Dokyo’s Attacks and How to Handle Them
Floating Balloon — Golden Circle
Dokyo conjures a golden circle around herself, and a floating balloon appears above her on the verge of exploding. Switch to the Oni Bow immediately and shoot the balloon down before it detonates. A hit drops her to the ground and gives you a free melee window. This is one of the cleanest punish opportunities in the entire fight — don’t miss it. In Phase 2, she summons two balloons instead of one.
Explosive Ball — Airborne Attack
Dokyo flies up into the air, hovers above Musashi, and charges up a giant ball with her face on it. The ball grows larger over time before she releases it. If it connects, it explodes and inflicts the Burn status ailment. Wait for the ball to grow large enough, then shoot it with the Oni Bow before she can release it. This stuns her, knocks her down, and inflicts Burn back on her. Also, whenever Dokyo lifts off the ground for any reason, switch to the bow — a hit while she’s airborne triggers a large explosion and drops her, handing you a free melee window you’d otherwise have to fight for.
Fire Turrets Line
Dokyo summons a row of metal fire turrets in a vertical line across the arena. Don’t try to run through the flames — stand between two turrets in the gaps. The fire doesn’t fill the space between each turret, so positioning yourself in those gaps keeps you safe. On Carnage difficulty, the fire hits considerably harder, so this matters even more at higher levels.
Spiky Ball
She hurls a giant spiky ball straight at Musashi. Deflect it back at her for damage. Simple and clean — just time your deflect right. In Phase 2, the returned spiky ball must be deflected twice before it will actually hurt her. Don’t stop at one deflect; keep going.
Double — Electrified Net
Dokyo conjures a copy of herself, and both the real Dokyo and the clone charge you together wielding a giant electrified net. Here’s the trick: activate Oni Vision to tell them apart. The real Dokyo always glows gold. Shoot her specifically with the Oni Bow. Hitting the copy does nothing useful.
Blue Explosive Masks
Dokyo locks Musashi in place and surrounds him with mask copies that transform into blue explosive enemies. Once you regain control, run behind Dokyo and angle the camera so those explosive enemies collide with her instead of you. This attack appears in both Phase 1 and Phase 2. Turning the fight’s crowd control mechanic into free damage on the boss is very satisfying once you get it right.
Kubi Akari — Flying Head Genma
Dokyo summons a set of Kubi Akari, the flying head Genma, and they begin chasing Musashi around the arena. They explode after a short while. The counter here is clever: run toward Dokyo while the Kubi Akari are chasing you. They’ll explode in the area around her, dealing damage to the boss instead. Don’t run away from them — you’re just dragging them through the arena for nothing. Run at the boss.
Meteor Fall
This is her most dangerous attack. Dokyo rises into the air, wraps herself inside what looks like a mini planet, and the meteor strike destroys almost every rock in the arena. Find the one uncracked rock and get behind it before the attack lands. There is no counter for the meteors themselves — you cannot parry or deflect them. Standing still and looking for a prompt that never comes is the most common way to die late in this fight. Scan the arena fast, identify the intact rock, and move. Once the barrage is over, the rock fragments left behind can be picked up and thrown at Dokyo for extra damage.
Staff Swing — Sudden Close-Range Attack
As mentioned in the core strategy section: if Dokyo delays her ranged attack longer than usual, she may suddenly teleport right next to Musashi and swing her staff. This catches aggressive players who push forward during the delay. When the pace of the fight slows unexpectedly, hold guard rather than pressing in.
Phase 1 Strategy
Phase 1 is the learning phase. Her patterns come out in a random order, so you need to be comfortable with all of them before the pace ramps up. The core loop stays constant — identify the gimmick, handle it, get your hits in, back off before she repositions.
Priority order for Phase 1:
- Keep the Oni Bow ready at all times — the balloon and airborne attacks are your best free damage windows.
- Position yourself so Kubi Akari can be funneled toward Dokyo when she summons them.
- Stand between fire turrets, never run through them.
- Deflect the spiky ball back when it comes.
- Use Oni Vision immediately when copies appear — find the gold glow and shoot.
- Keep a few hits and back off. Short punish beats a long combo here.
- Save your healing items for Phase 2 wherever possible.
She hits less hard than the late-game heavyweights like Benkei or Sasaki Ganryu Altered, so Phase 1 is survivable even if you make some mistakes. Use that room to learn her patterns well, because Phase 2 gives you less room for error.
Phase 2 Strategy — Faster, More Aggressive, More Complicated
Phase 2 kicks off when Dokyo wraps herself in red energy. Her patterns don’t change into something completely new, but they come out faster, with less recovery, and with extra layers added on top of what she was already doing.
What changes in Phase 2:
- Constant projectile pressure — she fires orbs and ranged attacks more frequently with less pause between patterns.
- Double balloon — during the golden circle attack, she now summons two balloons instead of one. Shoot both before they detonate.
- Spiky ball deflect twice — you must deflect the returned ball a second time before it will damage her. One deflect is no longer enough.
- Red mask enemies — she adds red mask enemies to the arena that you need to destroy using the Oni Bow.
- Meteor barrage — the falling meteors become more intense in this phase. Same mechanic — find the uncracked rock — but the window to react is tighter.
The same Issen cancel that works in Phase 1 still works here. A faster string is still a string — swing just before a projectile connects and you’ll cancel her attack. Keep doing it. Don’t panic when the pace increases. Stay on the Oni Bow, stay mobile, and keep the short punish windows as your only offensive mindset.
Once her health drops far enough, Dokyo enters a final escalation where giant falling meteors appear constantly. There are no counters for these. Watch the impact markers, keep moving, and only turn back toward Dokyo once a barrage finishes. The closing stretch is survival and patience more than aggressive pressure.
Common Mistakes That End Runs
- Trying to force long combos — she teleports away after a few hits. Three hits and back off is the right rhythm. Longer combos get interrupted by her repositioning or the next gimmick.
- Running away from Kubi Akari — run toward Dokyo instead so they explode on her.
- Not scanning for the uncracked rock fast enough during the meteor attack — standing still kills you here.
- Only deflecting the spiky ball once in Phase 2 — it needs two deflects before it damages her.
- Ignoring Oni Vision when she creates copies — attacking the wrong copy wastes time and leaves you open.
- Chasing recklessly through every projectile — wait for the mechanic to finish, then close the gap cleanly.
- Letting your buff timers run out mid-fight — check your restorative timers before the fight and during if you can spare the second.
- Burning Oni Awakening too early — there’s no Issen Break in this fight, so Awakening is your main burst damage. Save it for when you have a clear window.

Dokyo is one of the most creative boss fights in the game. Once you stop treating it like a swordsman duel and start thinking like a hunter — reading her tricks, punishing each window, never overstaying — she becomes very manageable. The Oni Bow does a lot of heavy lifting here, so keep it ready at all times.
