How to Play COD Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Early (New Zealand Method)

How to Play COD Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Early

    TL;DR – Quick Takeaways:

    • MW4 multiplayer launches at midnight local time in each region — not a single global unlock.
    • New Zealand hits midnight first, so setting your account to NZ lets you play up to 17 hours early (7 AM ET on October 22 for US players).
    • The trick works by changing your Activision account address to New Zealand, plus your console or PC region.
    • Xbox is the most reliable platform — system location + Activision address = done.
    • PC via Xbox app / Microsoft Store also works. Steam and Battle.net have extra regional checks — results vary.
    • PS5 is inconsistent with the Activision address method alone. A dedicated New Zealand PSN account is the more reliable route.
    • There are some ban reports, though unconfirmed by Activision. Proceed knowing the risk exists.
    • This does not apply to Campaign Early Access (Oct 16) or DMZ Early Access (Oct 20) — those unlocked globally at the same time.

What Is the New Zealand Trick?

The New Zealand trick is a region workaround COD players have used for years. It takes advantage of the fact that MW4 multiplayer unlocks at midnight local time in each country — not all at once. New Zealand is one of the first countries to hit that midnight, which means NZ players get access while most of the world is still waiting.

By switching your Activision account and your console or PC’s regional settings to New Zealand, the game thinks you’re a New Zealand player — and lets you in when NZ midnight arrives.

For US players on Eastern Time, that’s as early as 7 AM on October 22 — a full 17 hours before multiplayer would normally open for them at midnight on October 23. UK players could get in around 12 PM BST on October 22. Pacific Time players could be in by 4 AM on October 22.

This is specifically for multiplayer. Campaign Early Access (October 16) and DMZ Early Access (October 20) both unlocked at the same global time — the New Zealand trick doesn’t apply to those windows.

Does the New Zealand Trick Work for MW4?

Yes — and for the first time, it works on all platforms including PC. Previous COD titles launched on Steam and Battle.net at a single global time, so the trick only helped console players. MW4 changed that by launching at midnight local time on every platform, including Steam and Battle.net, meaning PC players can also use the method.

The trick was confirmed working during DMZ Early Access as a test — players who set their Activision address to New Zealand were able to jump into DMZ up to three hours ahead of the official early access start time, which validated that the method carries over to multiplayer.

CharlieIntel, one of the most reliable COD information sources, confirmed on X (October 19, 2026): changing your COD region to New Zealand on your Call of Duty profile should work for early multiplayer access.

How to Play MW4 Multiplayer Early on Xbox (Step by Step)

Xbox is the easiest and most reliable platform for this method. You need to do two things: change your Xbox console region, and update your Activision account address.

How to Play COD Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Early 2

Step 1 – Change Your Xbox Console Region

    • Press the Xbox button to open the guide
    • Go to Settings
    • Select System
    • Select Language & location
    • Change Location to New Zealand
    • Select Restart now when prompted — the change only applies after a reboot

Step 2 – Change Your Activision Account Address

    • Go to callofduty.com and log into your Activision account
    • Go to your Profile
    • Select Basic Info
    • Click Edit next to your address
    • Enter any valid New Zealand address (city, postcode) — a real NZ address works fine, it doesn’t need to be yours
    • Save the changes

Once your Xbox restarts and your Activision address is updated, launch Modern Warfare 4. When New Zealand hits midnight on October 23 (which is earlier in the day on October 22 for most regions), multiplayer will unlock for your account.

After you’re done playing, switch everything back to your real region to avoid any issues with your Microsoft Store region or currency.

How to Play MW4 Multiplayer Early on PC (Xbox App / Microsoft Store)

The PC method works only if you own MW4 through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. If you bought it on Steam or Battle.net, see the section below.

Step 1 – Change Your Windows Region

    • Open Windows Settings
    • Go to Time & language
    • Select Language & region
    • Change Country or region to New Zealand
    • Restart your PC for the change to apply — the Xbox app reads the Windows region on startup

Step 2 – Change Your Activision Account Address

    • Log into your Activision account at callofduty.com
    • Go to Profile → Basic Info → Edit Address
    • Enter a New Zealand address
    • Save and close

After the restart, log back into the Xbox app. The currency may now display in NZD — that’s normal and just confirms the region change took effect. Launch MW4 through the Xbox app once the New Zealand unlock time arrives.

How to Play MW4 Multiplayer Early on PS5

PS5 is the trickiest platform for this method. Sony does not allow you to change an existing PSN account’s country — once your PSN account is set to a region, it stays there. Because of this, the standard console region change approach doesn’t apply the same way it does on Xbox.

Method 1 – Activision Address Only (Inconsistent)

Some PS5 players have had success by only changing their Activision account address to New Zealand without touching any PlayStation settings. The results are inconsistent — some players get in early, others don’t. Worth trying since it requires no system changes:

    • Log into your Activision account at callofduty.com
    • Go to Profile → Basic Info → Edit Address
    • Enter a New Zealand address and save
    • Launch MW4 and see if the New Zealand unlock time applies

Method 2 – New Zealand PSN Account (More Reliable)

The more reliable PS5 route is creating a dedicated New Zealand PSN account, purchasing MW4 through the New Zealand PlayStation Store on that account, and setting that account as the primary on your console so your main account can access the game. This is more effort but gives a much higher success rate.

Note that this method involves buying the game through a different storefront and is best used as a last resort if Method 1 doesn’t work for you.

Does the New Zealand Trick Work on Steam or Battle.net?

For most players — no. Steam and Battle.net both have independent regional checks that go beyond your Activision account address and Windows region settings. They verify against billing details and IP addresses, and they’re not as easily fooled as the Xbox app.

That said, MW4 is the first COD to launch at midnight local time on Steam and Battle.net as well. Some guides suggest changing your Windows region to New Zealand alongside your Activision address could work on Steam — but results have been inconsistent, and Steam’s system checks can also flag a VPN if you use one, which creates a separate policy risk.

If you’re on Steam or Battle.net and the method doesn’t work, the safest option is simply waiting for your local midnight on October 23. The gap isn’t more than a few hours at most depending on your timezone.

MW4 Multiplayer Unlock Times by Region (New Zealand Reference)

Once your account is set to New Zealand, here’s when multiplayer becomes available from where you actually are:

    • Pacific Time (PT): 4:00 AM – October 22
    • Central Time (CT): 6:00 AM – October 22
    • Eastern Time (ET): 7:00 AM – October 22
    • British Summer Time (BST): 12:00 PM – October 22
    • Central European Time (CET): 1:00 PM – October 22
    • India Standard Time (IST): 4:30 PM – October 22
    • Japan Standard Time (JST): 8:00 PM – October 22
    • Australian Eastern Time (AET): 10:00 PM – October 22

These are all for October 22 — well before the standard October 23 midnight local launches for most regions.

Is the New Zealand Trick Safe? Ban Risk Explained

This is the question everyone asks. The honest answer is: the risk is low but not zero.

There have been some reports on COD community channels of account sanctions tied to the New Zealand trick, but Activision has not issued any official statement confirming bans for region switching to access MW4 early. The method has been used across multiple COD titles without widespread banning — and for MW4 specifically, Activision chose a midnight local time launch (which inherently creates this gap), suggesting they’re not aggressively policing it.

That said, changing your region in ways that violate platform terms of service is technically something Microsoft, Sony, and Activision reserve the right to action. A few things to be cautious about:

    • Don’t use a VPN. VPNs can trigger policy flags on Steam and Battle.net and increase the risk.
    • Don’t buy games through gray market cross-region purchases. That’s a separate, much higher-risk activity.
    • Switch back to your real region once you’ve had your early access — don’t leave NZ settings on indefinitely.

Xbox region switching for early COD access has been a community staple for years. The risk is real in theory but rare in practice for console players sticking to the standard Activision address + console region method.

What Carries Over Into Full Launch?

If you play multiplayer early using the New Zealand trick, any progress you make is permanent. XP, weapon levels, unlocks, and operator progression all carry forward into the full game. You’re not playing a separate early access environment — you’re in the actual live game.

The same applies to DMZ. Progress made during DMZ Early Access (October 20 onward) stayed on accounts after the full October 23 launch. So if you used the trick to get into multiplayer early, everything you earned is yours to keep.
