TL;DR – Quick Takeaways:
- Weapon Manuals are lootable items in Hajin that permanently unlock a specific weapon for purchase at the Gunsmith.
- They appear in Military Containers, Safes, Weapon Lockers, and locked rooms — drops are random, not fixed.
- You must extract with the Manual for the unlock to count. Dying with it means losing it.
- Use a Secure Slot in your backpack to protect the Manual even if you get eliminated.
- The Gunsmith unlocks at DMZ Level 10 — you need it open before you can actually buy the unlocked weapon.
- There are 28 Weapon Manuals total on Hajin, each for a different weapon.
- Best farm spot: Chang-san Air Base barracks during Operation Iron Citadel, with no gear equipped.
- A Manual is worth 5,000 DMZ Cash on extraction on top of the weapon unlock.
What Are Weapon Manuals in MW4 DMZ?
In MW4 DMZ, you can’t just walk into the Gunsmith and buy any gun you want. Each weapon needs to be unlocked first — and that’s where Weapon Manuals come in.
A Weapon Manual is a physical loot item you find out in Hajin. When you pick one up, your screen shows something like: MANUAL: PPSH-41 | WEAPON MANUAL | $5,000 | “Unlocks ability to purchase this weapon in Gunsmith.”
Extract with it and that weapon becomes permanently available for you to buy at the FOB’s Gunsmith whenever you want, as many times as you want. Skip the extraction and you get nothing — the unlock only registers once it leaves Hajin with you.
Think of it as a license. Without the Manual, even if you have unlimited DMZ Cash, the weapon stays locked in the Gunsmith. Once you extract with the Manual, it’s yours forever.
This system is separate from Multiplayer progression. Even if you’ve unlocked a weapon at Level 30 in Multiplayer, it won’t be available in DMZ until you find and extract its Manual from Hajin.
There are 28 Weapon Manuals total in MW4 DMZ — one for each purchasable weapon in the Gunsmith roster.
How to Use Weapon Manuals – The Gunsmith Explained
Before Weapon Manuals even matter, you need the Gunsmith unlocked. It opens at DMZ Level 10 at the FOB. Until then, Manuals you extract still register the unlock — but you can’t use the Gunsmith to buy or build until you hit that level.
Here’s the full flow:
- Find a Weapon Manual in Hajin
- Extract with it
- Back at the FOB, the Manual is automatically consumed and the weapon unlocks
- Once you’re DMZ Level 10, visit the Gunsmith and buy that weapon with DMZ Cash
- The weapon is now yours to take into deployments and customise with attachments
You can track your progress on the board beside your stash, which shows “GUNSMITH WEAPON MANUALS 0/28” at the start. Each extraction updates the count.
Note: extracting a weapon you looted in the field keeps that one physical copy in your stash. But it does not unlock it for repeat purchase. Only the Manual does that. If you want to buy a weapon again after losing it, you need its Manual — not just a lucky loot drop.
Check our DMZ XP and level unlocks guide if you need to hit Level 10 faster.
Where to Find Weapon Manuals in MW4 DMZ
Weapon Manuals are random. There are no guaranteed spawns — the same container won’t have a Manual every match. But certain container types and locations give you a consistently better shot at finding one.
Military Containers and Weapon Lockers
This is the primary source. Military Containers and Weapon Lockers scattered across Hajin — especially in high-threat military areas — are where Weapon Manuals drop most often. Infinity Ward themselves confirmed military containers and safes as the main search locations in official FOB documentation.
The best areas to search are:
- Chang-san Air Base — the most reliable military container density on the map. The barracks near the perimeter wall are particularly good.
- Police Stations — five across Hajin, each with locked Weapon Depots inside. The armory lockers have an elevated chance to drop Manuals. See our full police station locations guide to find all five fast.
- Military compounds and outposts — any POI with visible military containers (green metal crates, weapons lockers) is worth checking.
Safes
Safes are another solid source. They don’t spawn in fixed locations every match, but they show up frequently in compounds and locked spaces. High-threat areas generally have better safe loot, so if you can handle the enemy density, push toward red-marked zones on the Tac-Map.
Locked Rooms and Keyed Areas
Rooms that require a specific Key or Keycard to enter have a noticeably higher chance of dropping Weapon Manuals and other rare loot. The Vault Armory under the Heavenly Luck Casino in Cheongun Village is a confirmed example — its Weapons Locker has held the PPSh-41 Manual and other rare items.
Other keyed locations across Hajin follow the same pattern. If you have a key in your stash, using it during a run is always worth it for Manual hunting.
Enemy Operator Backpacks
If you eliminate another player, check their backpack. Enemy operators can carry Manuals they’ve already looted during that deployment. This isn’t a farming strategy, but it’s a bonus when PvP encounters happen.

Best Weapon Manual Farm – Operation Iron Citadel Barracks
The fastest and most consistent solo farming spot found so far is the barracks near the perimeter wall at Chang-san Air Base, reached via the Operation Iron Citadel story mission.
Here’s why it works well:
- You deploy directly into the North Korean Wilderness right next to the Air Base — no long travel time.
- The barracks contain multiple military containers and duffel bags in close proximity.
- You can deploy with no gear (Free Loadout) to keep the run low-cost.
- You don’t have to finish the mission — just loot the barracks, find a Manual, and exfil.
A real-world test found a PPSh-41 Weapon Manual in a duffel bag inside the barracks about 4 minutes into the run, with 27 minutes still left on the radiation clock. Not every run pays out a Manual, but the container density here makes it one of the better odds you’ll find on the map.
If you do want to finish Iron Citadel while you’re there, it unlocks the LTV insertion vehicle and pays 25,000 DMZ Cash. Our DMZ Story Missions rewards guide covers all six operations and what each one pays.
How to Safely Extract With a Weapon Manual
Finding a Manual is only half the job. Getting it out is what actually matters.
Use a Secure Slot
As soon as you pick up a Weapon Manual, move it into a Secure Slot in your backpack if one is available. Secure Slots protect items even if you’re eliminated — meaning the Manual returns to your FOB even if you die during the run. Without a Secure Slot, losing the Manual on death means losing the unlock entirely.
Medium Backpacks add Secure Slots, so upgrading your backpack before Manual farming runs is a smart move.
Consider Exfiling Early
Once you’ve found a Manual, weigh whether it’s worth staying to loot more. The Manual is your high-value item — if you’re in a high-threat area with enemies around, an early exfil is often the smarter play. DMZ Cash and other loot can be farmed again. A Manual that gets lost to an ambush at the exfil point is just frustrating.
Plan Your Exfil Route
Before you loot high-threat areas, mark an exfil point on the Tac-Map. Know your route before enemies start closing in. Check our guide to the Wanted Hunter system — if you’ve been flagged, other players might be tracking you toward exfil.
Weapon Manuals vs Weapon Blueprints – What’s the Difference?
These two things get confused a lot. Here’s the clear difference:
- Weapon Manual: Unlocks the base weapon for repeat purchase at the Gunsmith with DMZ Cash. Permanently available after one extraction. You can then add your own custom attachments via the Gunsmith.
- Weapon Blueprint: A pre-built weapon with a fixed set of attachments. You can use it once for free. If you lose it, you can rebuy it at the FOB at a discount — but you can’t change its attachments. If you want the gun with different attachments, you need the Manual.
Blueprints are useful for getting quick access to a weapon without grinding. Manuals give you the full custom build path. Both serve different purposes — ideally you want both for any weapon you plan to use seriously.
Weapon Manuals and the Gunsmith Attachment System
Once a weapon is unlocked via its Manual and you’ve bought it at the Gunsmith, you can add attachments to it using DMZ Cash. Attachments unlock as you level up the weapon through deployments — and this weapon progression is shared with Multiplayer. Levels you earn in one mode carry across to the other.
New base weapons from the Gunsmith come with no attachments by default. You build them out from scratch using your DMZ Cash reserves. If you extract with a weapon you found in the field (without the Manual), you can still bring it to the Gunsmith and add attachments to that specific copy — but you won’t be able to rebuy it later without the Manual.
Working on camo challenges? Having weapons built through the Gunsmith makes it much easier to equip the right attachments for Special camo challenges like suppressed kills or mounted kills.
Weapon Manual FAQ
What happens to the Manual after I extract with it?
It’s consumed automatically when you return to the FOB. You won’t see it in your stash — it converts directly into the weapon unlock. The Gunsmith will now show that weapon as available to purchase.
Can I share a Manual with my squad?
No. Weapon Manuals are personal unlocks. Each player needs to extract their own Manual for the individual weapon unlock. Squadmates carrying the same Manual get nothing for it — only the person who extracts with it gets the unlock.
Do Weapon Manuals unlock the weapon in Multiplayer too?
No. DMZ Weapon Manuals only unlock weapons in the DMZ Gunsmith. Multiplayer has its own weapon unlock system through player levels and progression.
Can I find the same Manual twice?
You can find and extract a Manual for a weapon you’ve already unlocked. When that happens, it still pays the 5,000 DMZ Cash value — the unlock is just redundant since the weapon is already in your Gunsmith. Not a wasted run, just a cash bonus.
What if I die with the Manual and didn’t use a Secure Slot?
You lose it. Another player can loot it from your backpack and extract with it themselves to get the unlock. Always prioritise Secure Slots for high-value loot like Manuals.
How many Weapon Manuals are there in total?
There are 28 Weapon Manuals in MW4 DMZ at launch, each corresponding to a different Gunsmith weapon. The ones with “n/a” in the Gunsmith weapon list are unlocked by other means (such as starting weapons or blueprint rewards).
