TL;DR
- DMZ has its own 70-level progression track, separate from the 1–55 multiplayer system.
- DMZ XP counts toward your 1–55 player level, but multiplayer XP does not feed your DMZ level.
- Story Missions give the most XP per run — best method to level fast.
- You keep your earned XP even if you die and fail to exfil.
- Reaching level 70 requires 1,165,573 total DMZ XP.
- Key stations unlock at levels 2, 5, 10, and 20 — prioritize hitting those early.
What Is DMZ Progression in Modern Warfare 4?
Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode runs on its own level system. It goes from level 1 all the way to level 70, and it has nothing to do with the regular 1–55 multiplayer ranks. These are two completely separate tracks.
As you earn DMZ XP, you unlock new things for your Forward Operating Base (FOB) — stations, recipes for your 3D Printer, operator skins, consumables, and more. Think of it as building out your home base over time.
The best part? DMZ XP also feeds your main 1–55 player level at the same time. So grinding DMZ is doing double duty. However, XP you earn in Multiplayer or Warzone does not count toward your DMZ level at all. It is a one-way street.
If you are new to the mode, check out our MW4 campaign rewards guide and our breakdown of MW4 campaign early access to get oriented before jumping into DMZ.
How to Earn DMZ XP in Modern Warfare 4
DMZ XP only comes from one place — playing inside Hajin, the DMZ Exclusion Zone. You cannot earn it from menus, challenges outside of DMZ, or other game modes.
Here is every confirmed way to earn DMZ XP during a deployment:
- Story Missions — These are your biggest XP source. Each completed story mission pays around 12,500 XP or more. Run these first.
- Dynamic Operations — Repeatable objectives that award roughly 4,500 to 8,000 XP per completion, plus DMZ Cash and Supply Drops. You can start one before you deploy or pick up a Dynamic Ops Phone mid-match on the map.
- Side Ops — Smaller tasks like activating UAV Towers, capturing SAM Sites, and climbing Lieutenant Hunt towers. Lower risk, still solid XP on the side.
- Combat — Eliminating enemies earns XP. Taking down rival operators gives more XP than AI kills, though fighting AI still helps your Combat Rating.
- Looting containers — Opening loot containers contributes XP to your after-action report.
- Successful Exfil — Getting out alive gives you a Deployment Bonus on top of everything else you earned.
One important thing: you keep your DMZ XP even if you die. Whatever you earned during the run stays on your account. Dying only hurts your loot — not your progress.
How to Earn DMZ XP Fast: Best Methods
1. Run Story Missions Back to Back
Story Missions are the single best XP source in DMZ. They give you a clear objective, a mission briefing telling you where to go, and a solid XP payout when you complete them. Community testing has shown players jumping from DMZ level 4 to level 10 in just two story mission runs — roughly 30 minutes each.
Once you finish a story mission in a deployment, head straight to exfil to bank the XP and then redeploy immediately for the next one.
2. Stack XP Tokens Before You Deploy
If you completed the MW4 campaign, you get Double XP Tokens and Double Weapon XP Tokens as rewards. These work in both Multiplayer and DMZ. Pop one before your deployment and every activity in that run earns double — story mission XP, combat XP, all of it.
For more on campaign rewards, see our full MW4 campaign rewards breakdown.
3. Chain Dynamic Operations
If you have done all the story missions or want variety, grinding Dynamic Ops is the next best option. Each completed operation hands out XP and a Supply Drop. The Supply Drops get rarer the more Ops you finish in a single deployment, so staying alive longer in one run pays off.
You can queue into a Dynamic Op before you deploy from the FOB, or grab a Dynamic Ops Phone on the ground in Hajin to trigger one mid-match.
4. Pick Up Side Ops Along the Way
Do not ignore Side Ops. While they pay less XP than a full operation, they are fast to complete and you will run into them naturally while moving across the map. Activating UAV towers and completing radio tasks are low-risk ways to pad your XP total each run.
5. Fight AI and Rival Operators
Combat earns XP too. Rival operators pay more than AI kills, so if you are confident in gunfights, hunting other squads is a legitimate XP source. Just know that dying to them costs you your loot. Stick to AI if you are playing safer and still want the combat XP.
6. Always Try to Exfil
A clean exfil hands you a Deployment Bonus on top of your run XP. You also keep all your looted gear. Even when your team has taken losses, if you can reach the exfil point, do it. The bonus matters over many runs.

DMZ XP and Your Main Player Level
Every point of DMZ XP you earn also counts toward your standard 1–55 player level. So if you prefer playing DMZ over multiplayer, you are not falling behind on weapon unlocks, perks, or killstreaks. You are progressing both tracks at the same time.
This also means DMZ is one of the smartest ways to level weapons fast. Weapon XP carries across Multiplayer and DMZ, so whatever gun you are using in Hajin is also getting XP toward camos and unlock levels.

DMZ XP Required to Reach Level 70
The XP cost per level stays fairly flat throughout. Level 2 costs around 15,050 XP, and level 69 to 70 costs about 18,634 XP. There is no giant spike in the middle. It is a steady grind from start to finish.
Here are the total XP milestones confirmed so far:
- Level 2 — 15,050 XP total
- Level 5 — 60,638 XP total
- Level 10 — 137,806 XP total
- Level 15 — 216,344 XP total
- Level 20 — 296,209 XP total
- Level 25 — 377,379 XP total
- Level 30 — 459,845 XP total
- Level 40 — 628,631 XP total
- Level 50 — 802,528 XP total
- Level 60 — 981,514 XP total
- Level 70 — 1,165,573 XP total
The key takeaway is that consistent deployments beat sporadic grinding. Because the XP cost per level barely changes, you make the most progress by just playing regularly and finishing each run with a Story Mission or Dynamic Op completed.
Does DMZ XP Carry Over to Multiplayer Level?
Yes. Every point of DMZ XP you earn also counts toward your overall 1–55 Player Level at the same time. So playing DMZ is essentially leveling two things at once — your DMZ track and your main rank.
What does not work the other way: XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone will not raise your DMZ level. Only DMZ deployments in Hajin move that track.
This makes DMZ the most efficient way to level everything at launch, especially if you want to unlock weapons and perks on the main level track without touching multiplayer.

DMZ Progression and Dog Tags Explained
DMZ progression also ties into individual Operators. When you earn DMZ XP with an Operator active, their Dog Tag levels up. Each time the Dog Tag levels up, you earn a Trait Point for that Operator.
Traits are upgrades specific to that Operator’s role — think passive bonuses that make them better in the field. The Dog Tag progression is tied to each Operator individually, but your overall DMZ level is account-wide. All Operators share the same station and level unlocks.
A successful exfil awards the most Dog Tag XP. If you exfil after a particularly good run, your Dog Tag may level up more than once from a single deployment.

What Is the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in DMZ?
The FOB is your home base between deployments. It is where you prepare before heading into Hajin. As you level up in DMZ, you unlock new Stations at the FOB that let you do more.
The four main Stations you unlock early are:
- 3D Printer (Level 2) — Craft gear, armor, backpacks, and equipment before a run.
- Vendor (Level 5) — Buy items using DMZ Cash. Stock refreshes daily.
- Gunsmith (Level 10) — Purchase and modify weapons using weapon manuals and attachments.
- Dog Tag Case (Level 20) — Display dog tags taken from enemy operators. Expandable with the 3D Printer.
There are also Station Upgrades at various levels that add more options to existing Stations — more items at the Vendor, a discount at the Gunsmith, the ability to print Fire Support from the 3D Printer, and more stash space throughout.
Useful Tips Before You Start Grinding DMZ Levels
- Use XP tokens early — Campaign completion rewards include Double XP Tokens. Use them on Story Mission runs for maximum output.
- Focus on Story Missions first — These pay the most XP per run and give you a clear in-game objective. Do not just free roam if you want to level fast.
- Do not panic if you die — You keep all earned XP from the deployment even if you fail to exfil. Your loot is gone, but your XP is safe.
- Keep the gun you want to level in your hands — Weapon XP tracks to whatever gun you are actively using during a run.
- Stack Dynamic Ops and Side Ops mid-run — Combine them with Story Mission runs to maximize XP output in a single deployment.
- Hit level 2 as your first goal — The 3D Printer Station opening up makes every future run significantly easier.
