What Is the Pacifist Achievement in Modern Warfare 4?

Pacifist is a Gold trophy on PlayStation and a 50 Gamerscore achievement on Xbox. The requirement is straightforward on paper: complete Mission 8 (Assassins) by killing only one enemy.

That one kill is mandatory and scripted into the mission — you can’t avoid it, and it won’t disqualify you. Everything after it needs to be handled without killing anyone. No shooting guards, no accidental kills. Just stealth and patience all the way to the bunker.

It’s one of the harder Gold trophies in the campaign, not because the mission is action-heavy, but because one slip ruins the whole run. The Assassins mission is built around stealth — libraries, kitchens, a garden, a sniper, a lake — and the Pacifist challenge pushes you to actually use that design instead of fighting your way through.

What Mission Is Pacifist In?

Mission 8 — Assassins. It comes after Gone Dark and before Survivors in the campaign order, set one day before North Korea’s invasion of the South.

Assassins is unique in the campaign because you don’t play as Private Park or Captain Price. You play as Supreme Leader Ri Seung-Ho — the North Korean leader — during a coup staged by his own sister, Ri Ju-Young. Your bodyguard Lt. Ko Jin-Hyuk hands you a knife and an earpiece, and guides you through the palace via CCTV cameras while you try to reach a hidden bunker.

The whole mission is built around stealth. Completing it for Pacifist just means leaning into that fully rather than fighting when it gets tense.

Finishing Assassins unlocks the Oh-Ji Base Operator for use in Multiplayer and DMZ.

Does Difficulty Matter for Pacifist?

No. Pacifist has no difficulty requirement. You can earn it on Recruit, which is actually the best choice for this run. Guards on Recruit are slower to spot you, their detection cones are more forgiving, and you have more room for error in tight stealth sections.

Save the harder difficulty settings for other runs — several other Assassins-related challenges and achievement requirements do need Hardened or above, but Pacifist isn’t one of them.

Pacifist vs. Revenge — Why You Need Two Runs

Assassins has two trophies, and they ask for completely opposite things.

• Pacifist (Gold): Finish Assassins with only one kill.
• Revenge (Silver): Kill every remaining enemy after Shin dies — on Hardened difficulty or higher.

You cannot get both in a single run. One asks you to leave every enemy alive. The other asks you to kill all of them. Plan for at least two separate playthroughs of Assassins if you’re going for the full list.

Most players recommend doing Pacifist first on Recruit, then running Assassins again on Hardened or Veteran for Revenge. The mission is replayable from the mission select screen at any time once you’ve completed it once.

All Assassins Door Codes (Mission 8)

Ko feeds you the door codes as you progress through the palace, but having them ahead of time saves stress during a Pacifist run. The codes are fixed and never change between runs:

• First door: 0919
• Second door: 5523
• Third door: 7632
• Fourth door: 9103

You’ll encounter them in that order as you move through the display room, boardroom, library, and kitchen sections of the palace. Don’t rush the keypads — take a moment to make sure you’re entering the right code, especially if guards are nearby.

Step-by-Step Pacifist Route Through Assassins

Opening Sequence – Follow Shin

The mission opens with Seung-Ho in the palace memorial gallery. After the opening cutscene, Ko gives you a combat knife and you follow Shin through the gold doors toward the boardroom. This section is on rails — just move with Shin and don’t deviate. No kills required here.

The Mandatory Kill – Boardroom Ambush

At a certain point in the early palace section, Shin sets you up for a kill during an ambush. This kill is scripted and mandatory. It will not count against your Pacifist run — the game builds it into the mission design intentionally. Make this kill when prompted and move on.

After this point, every other enemy in the mission must stay alive. From here to the bunker, your only tools are stealth, patience, and the environment.

Palace Halls and Display Room

After the mandatory kill, Shin goes down in a scripted ambush. You’re now alone. Ko guides you over the earpiece using the palace cameras.

Move slowly through the halls. Stay crouched, hug the walls, and wait for guards to complete their patrol routes before passing. Don’t rush. If a guard starts turning toward you, stop and let him pass. The palace design gives you enough room to avoid every enemy if you don’t panic.

Use the first keypad code — 0919 — on the door when you reach it.

Library Section

The multi-level library is one of the more complex sections for Pacifist. Guards patrol through the shelves and across the upper level. Move low, use the shelving as cover, and watch the patrol timing before crossing open sections.

You can pick up glass bottles from nearby crates and throw them to distract guards away from your path. Use these when guards are directly blocking a door or corner you need to pass through.

The library exit keypad code is 5523. Enter it and move through quickly once the path is clear.

Kitchen Section

The kitchen is a crawl. Literally — you’ll need to move prone through parts of it to avoid detection. Stay in the far corners, away from the guards working near the counters. Move only when their backs are turned.

The kitchen exit keypad code is 7632. This gets you out into the garden.

Garden and Lake

The garden opens up compared to the indoor sections, but there’s a sniper watching the lake from a gazebo. Don’t cross the open ground — instead, drop into the water and swim under. You can fire your pistol while underwater if needed, but for Pacifist, the swim is simply the cleanest route to get past the sniper without any engagement at all.

Stay underwater as long as you need. Surface only in spots with cover. Once you’re past the sniper’s sightline, move toward the bunker.

Bunker Door — Final Keypad

The last keypad is at the base of a statue near the bunker entrance. The code is 9103. Enter it and move inside. The bunker triggers a cutscene — a major story moment where the full extent of Ko’s betrayal is revealed — and the mission ends.

How to Confirm Pacifist Unlocked

The achievement notification appears immediately at the end of the mission, right as Seung-Ho thanks Ko by name before the betrayal cutscene plays out. You’ll see a pop-up reading: “MW4 – Pacifist: Complete ‘Assassins’ by only killing one enemy.”

If the notification doesn’t appear, you accidentally made a second kill somewhere during the run. The mission isn’t tracked with an on-screen counter, so it can be easy to miss an accidental death — a guard who fell into the environment, or a bottle throw that caused a fatal impact.

If it doesn’t unlock, you’ll need to replay Assassins from the start. You can select it directly from the mission select menu without replaying the whole campaign.

Key Tips for Getting Pacifist First Try

• Play on Recruit. No difficulty requirement means there’s zero reason to make the stealth harder than it needs to be. Guards are slower and less sharp on the lowest setting.
• Don’t throw bottles at guards. Throw them away from guards to pull them in another direction. If a bottle hits a guard directly and kills them, your run ends.
• Swim the lake, don’t fight the sniper. The underwater route exists specifically to let you bypass the gazebo sniper. Use it.
• Never fire your knife or gun at enemies. The knife is for the mandatory kill only. After that, it stays sheathed.
• Checkpoints don’t disqualify you. If a guard spots you and you die, reload the checkpoint and try the section again. Dying and restarting doesn’t reset the Pacifist counter — only actually killing an extra enemy does.
• Move slowly through the kitchen. It’s the most common place for an accidental kill when players get impatient. Crawl, wait, crawl again.

Can You Get Pacifist on a First Campaign Playthrough?

Yes. Assassins is Mission 8, so you’ll reach it during your first run. If you’re going for Pacifist, it’s worth doing it on that first pass rather than coming back for it — the mission select replay feature works fine for a second attempt, but doing it clean the first time saves time overall.

Just remember: if you’re also trying for the Revenge trophy in the same run, you can’t. Those two are mutually exclusive and need separate attempts. Do Pacifist on a first run on Recruit, then come back and replay Assassins on Hardened or Veteran for Revenge.

How Does Pacifist Fit Into the Full Trophy List?

Modern Warfare 4 has 18 campaign trophies and achievements total — all campaign-exclusive, none from Multiplayer or DMZ. Pacifist is one of the 8 Gold trophies in the set, worth 50 Gamerscore.
