TL;DR – Quick Takeaways:
- Every MW4 weapon shares one Camo Track across Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone.
- The base order is: 8 Military camos → 3 Special camos → Gold → Platinum → Harmonic Break → Divergence.
- Divergence unlocks Mastery Camo challenges — three per game mode.
- Multiplayer Mastery: Mercurial Drift → Polyatomic Reforged → Orion Reforged.
- DMZ Mastery: Chiral → Ripple Tide → Helio.
- Warzone Mastery (Season 1): Parallax → Damascus Reforged → Empyros.
- Weapon Prestige adds 4 extra Pyroclast camos after you hit weapon prestige master levels.
- That’s 12 Mastery camos total per weapon, plus 4 Prestige camos on top.
How the MW4 Camo System Works
Modern Warfare 4 does something earlier COD games didn’t — your weapon’s camo progress is shared across every mode. Whether you’re grinding Multiplayer, running DMZ, or dropping into Warzone, kills and challenges count toward the same weapon track.
The shared ladder goes: Military camos (from levelling), then Special camos (challenges unique to each gun), then four Completionist camos — Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, and Divergence. Once Divergence is done, Mastery camo challenges open up. Those are mode-specific, meaning you need Multiplayer matches for Orion Reforged and DMZ deployments for Helio.
There are 33 base weapons in MW4 at launch. Post-launch weapons added in updates may extend the total, but the exact number you need to hit stays tied to the base game count.

Military Camos – Unlock by Levelling Your Weapon
Every weapon has 8 Military camos. You don’t need to complete any challenges for these — just level up the weapon and they unlock automatically at set milestones.
The unlock levels vary by weapon, but as an example the Han 86 unlocks its Military camos at levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, and 65. Other guns follow their own level schedules, so check the in-game camo tab for your specific weapon.
The Military camos in MW4 include designs like Grazer, Dapple Cast, Indexed, Groundcover, and Mausoleum, among others per weapon.

Special Camos – Three Challenges Per Weapon
After the Military camos, each weapon has 3 Special camos with unique challenges. These don’t all unlock at the same time — each one has its own weapon level requirement before the challenge becomes available.
So you can’t rush these at the start. Level the weapon, hit the required unlock level, then complete the challenge. Some examples of Special camo challenges include:
- Get 75 Point Blank Kills
- Get 75 Mounted Kills
- Get 100 Kills from Behind
- Get 100 Longshot Kills
- Get 75 Enemy Longshot Kills
The good news is you can work on Special challenges while still grinding weapon levels, so both progress at the same time if you play smart.

Gold Camo – First Completionist Tier
Once you’ve unlocked all 8 Military camos and all 3 Special camos on a weapon, the Gold challenge opens. It’s the same across every weapon class:
- Multiplayer: Get 15 Player Kills in a single match
- DMZ: Get 100 Enemy Kills in a single match
Gold is per weapon. You need to complete it on each gun individually. There’s no shortcut — go through it weapon by weapon.

Platinum Camo – Gold Across the Whole Weapon Class
Platinum challenges don’t open until you’ve got Gold on every weapon in a class. So if you have Gold on all ARs, Platinum unlocks for ARs. But you can’t skip around — every gun in the class needs Gold first.
Platinum challenges differ by weapon class:
Platinum Camo Challenges by Weapon Class (Multiplayer)
- Assault Rifles: Get 50 Headshots against Players
- SMGs: Get 25 Player Kills from Behind
- Shotguns: Get 125 Hipfire Kills against Players
- LMGs: Get 3 Player Kills without dying, 15 times
- Marksman Rifles: Get 75 Player Kills while Prone
- Sniper Rifles: Get 75 Player Kills while Prone
- Pistols: Get 20 Player Kills from Behind
- Launchers: Get 2 Player Kills without taking damage, 15 times
- Melee: Get 3 Kills without dying, 15 times against Players
Harmonic Break Camo – Platinum on All 33 Weapons

Harmonic Break only unlocks after Platinum is done on all 33 base game weapons. That’s a significant gate — you need to touch every weapon class, not just your favourites.
Harmonic Break challenges are also class-specific:
Harmonic Break Camo Challenges by Weapon Class
- Assault Rifles: Get 25 Double Kills against Players (MP) / Get 50 Double Kills against Enemies (DMZ)
- Snipers: Get 75 One Shot Kills against Players (MP) / Get 150 One Shot Kills against Enemies (DMZ)
- Shotguns: Get 2 Player Kills without Reloading 25 times (MP) / Get 2 Enemy Kills without Reloading 50 times (DMZ)
- Marksman Rifles: Get 75 One Shot Kills against Players (MP) / Get 150 One Shot Kills against Enemies (DMZ)
This is where a lot of players stall. The grind across all 33 weapons is real. The fastest path is to knock out weapon classes in batches — finish all ARs to Gold, then Platinum, then move to SMGs, and so on.
Divergence Camo – The Gateway to Mastery

After completing all 33 Harmonic Break challenges, you unlock Divergence automatically. You don’t have to do anything extra — it pops immediately once all Harmonic Break camos are done.
Divergence is important because it’s the key that opens the Mastery Camo challenges. Without it, Mastery stays locked, no matter how much you play.
All Multiplayer Mastery Camo Challenges in MW4
There are three Multiplayer Mastery camos and they must be completed in order. Once earned, a Mastery camo applies to all weapons at once — you don’t repeat it per gun.

Mercurial Drift (Multiplayer Mastery 1)
Prerequisite: Divergence on all weapons
Challenge: Get 10 kills in a match, 250 times
This is a lot of grinding but the requirement itself is manageable if you’re playing regularly. Any match where you hit 10 kills counts toward the 250.
Polyatomic Reforged (Multiplayer Mastery 2)

Prerequisite: Mercurial Drift unlocked
Challenge: Get 3 kills without taking damage, 300 times
This one gets harder. You need clean 3-kill streaks without absorbing a single bullet. Play modes with good positioning options and stick to sightlines you can control.
Orion Reforged (Multiplayer Mastery 3)

Prerequisite: Polyatomic Reforged unlocked
Challenge: Get 5 kills without dying, 500 times
Orion Reforged is the final Multiplayer mastery camo and one of the hardest grinds in the game — at least 2,500 clean kills across 500 qualifying streaks. This is a long-term commitment. DMZ kills don’t count here, so you have to do all 500 runs in Multiplayer.
If you’re working through killstreak unlocks alongside your camo grind, our MW4 killstreak unlock guide covers everything you need.
All DMZ Mastery Camo Challenges in MW4
DMZ has its own separate Mastery camo chain — Chiral, Ripple Tide, and Helio. These only progress in DMZ deployments, not Multiplayer.
Chiral (DMZ Mastery 1)

Prerequisite: Divergence camo completed
Challenge: Get 25,000 Tier 3+ enemy kills in DMZ
A big number, but manageable across many deployments. Focus on high-threat areas with dense AI spawns to build the count faster. Our guides on Dynamic Op Phones and police station locations in DMZ can help you find hot spots.
Ripple Tide (DMZ Mastery 2)

Prerequisite: Chiral unlocked
Challenge: Exfil with 2 Lieutenant dog tags in a single deployment, 50 times
This is the hardest DMZ camo challenge. You need to kill two Lieutenants and carry both dog tags to exfil — in the same run, 50 times. Lieutenants are tough, named enemies. Check our dog tags location and guide to know where to find them consistently.
Helio (DMZ Mastery 3 – Top DMZ Camo)

Prerequisite: Ripple Tide unlocked
Challenge: Get 2,500 kills using a Legendary Weapon on a Max Level Operator in DMZ
Helio is the highest camo you can earn in DMZ. You need both a Legendary Weapon and a Max Level Operator active at the same time. Stack your Operator Traits and use Dynamic Operations for the best XP and kill efficiency per run. Our full DMZ XP and level unlocks guide covers exactly how to hit max Operator level.
Warzone Mastery Camos in MW4 (Season 1)
Warzone camo challenges aren’t live at MW4 launch — they arrive in Season 1. The three Warzone Mastery camos are:
- Parallax (Warzone Mastery 1)
- Damascus Reforged (Warzone Mastery 2)
- Empyros (Warzone Mastery 3)
Exact challenge requirements will be published when Season 1 goes live. The base Camo Track you build now in Multiplayer and DMZ will carry over, so progress made today still counts.
Weapon Prestige Camos – Pyroclast Tier
Beyond Mastery, MW4 adds a Weapon Prestige grind with 4 camos per weapon. These are the same design for every gun — there are no weapon-specific Prestige skins at launch.
To access this, you need to reach max level on a weapon, then prestige it. After prestiging, you unlock Weapon Prestige Master levels — and there are 250 of them to grind.
- Pyroclast – Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 1
- Pyroclast Terminus – Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 73
- Pyroclast Scatter – Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 150
- Pyroclast Cascade – Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 250
The Prestige grind is completely separate from the Mastery grind. You can work on both at the same time on the same weapon.

Tips to Speed Up the MW4 Camo Grind
- Start Special challenges early. Don’t wait until you hit max level. As soon as a Special challenge unlocks (at its required weapon level), start working on it in the background.
- Do whole weapon classes at once. Gold for one class, then Platinum, then move on. Mixing weapon classes slows you down significantly.
- Don’t ignore DMZ for camo progress. The shared Camo Track means DMZ kills count toward Military and Special camo unlocks. If you enjoy extraction play, you’re making camo progress the whole time. Check the DMZ Prestige guide to double up your rewards.
- For Multiplayer Mastery, pick the right modes. Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged require clean kill streaks. Team Deathmatch with good map rotations is often more consistent than objective modes for building streaks.
- For DMZ Mastery, use Dynamic Operations. They pay XP, cash, and generate enemy kills in focused areas — better for Chiral’s Tier 3 kill count than free roam wandering.
- Warzone prep starts now. All base camo track progress carries to Warzone Season 1. Every kill you make in MP or DMZ today counts.
