What Is the Wanted and Hunter System in MW4 DMZ?
The Wanted and Hunter system is MW4 DMZ’s built-in PvP layer. It turns player-versus-player combat into a persistent risk-and-reward game that tracks your actions across multiple deployments — not just within a single match.
At its core, the system creates two informal roles. Killers are players who hunt down and eliminate rival operators, building up a bounty on their heads. Hunters are players who chase Wanted operators, spend DMZ Cash on intel, and collect the reward by extracting with the target’s Dog Tag.
PvP is still optional in MW4 DMZ. You can complete missions, loot, and exfil without ever engaging another player. But the bounty system gives aggressive players a reason to fight, and gives everyone else a reason to know who the dangerous operators are in their deployment.
This system is available across all three DMZ deployment types — Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam. It runs in the background of every match, regardless of what you are focused on.
How the Wanted System Works in MW4 DMZ
How to Become Wanted
Every time you kill another player in Hajin, your Operator’s Dog Tag records that kill. Once you accumulate 4 Operator kills across any number of deployments, your status changes to Wanted.
The moment you hit Wanted, a banner appears on screen reading “BOUNTY INCREASED – WANTED” along with the DMZ Cash value of your current bounty. From that point on, you are a marked target. Nearby operators in the same deployment receive an alert when you get close to them. They do not need to pay for intel to know you are in the area.
Your bounty does not reset between matches. The system tracks PvP kills persistently across all your deployments. A Wanted status built over three separate sessions is just as real as one built in a single run.
Wanted Levels and Most Wanted Status
Becoming Wanted is just the first threshold. The system has multiple tiers that escalate the bounty on your head as you continue killing players while in Wanted status.
The highest tier is Most Wanted. Reaching it means your bounty is among the largest in the game. Most Wanted operators who appear in your deployment are marked on the Tac-Map for every squad in the match — no Bounty Station visit needed, no intel purchase required. Everyone in the deployment automatically knows where you roughly are.
This is intentional. Activision describes Most Wanted players as severe threats — the most notorious killers globally — and the exposure that comes with it is the cost of reaching that status. Once you are on the Most Wanted leaderboard, you have proven you can survive in Hajin while being hunted. Most squads will consider you a priority target on sight.
What Happens When You Are Wanted
Being Wanted changes how you move through Hajin. Here is what to expect:
- Nearby operators receive automatic proximity alerts. When you enter the vicinity of other players, they get a notification. You cannot sneak past squads as easily as a non-Wanted operator.
- Hunters can buy your location. Any squad can visit a Bounty Station in Hajin and spend DMZ Cash to get a circle on their Tac-Map showing your approximate area. The higher your Wanted level, the tighter and more frequently updating that circle is.
- Your Dog Tag carries your bounty value. If you die, your Steel Dog Tag on your body shows your name, your operator kill count, and the DMZ Cash bounty attached to it. Anyone who loots it and extracts successfully collects that reward.
- At Most Wanted tier, you are visible to everyone. No purchase needed. Every squad in the deployment sees your general position on the map.
How the Hunter System Works in MW4 DMZ

How to Start Hunting
You do not need to unlock anything to become a Hunter. If Wanted players are active in your deployment, you can start chasing them right away using a Bounty Station.
During any deployment, open your Tac-Map and look for the Bounty Station icon, labeled “BOUNTIES.” These are fixed terminals located across Hajin. Walk up to one and interact with the “OPEN BOUNTY STATION” prompt.
Inside the Bounty Station menu, you will see a list called WANTED PLAYERS TO HUNT — a free display of all Wanted operators currently active in your deployment, along with the bounty value attached to each one. You can browse this list without spending a single DMZ Cash.

How to Buy Bounty Intel
Knowing a Wanted player is in your deployment is useful. Knowing where they are is better. That is what Bounty Intel does.
From the Bounty Station or the FOB Bank, you can spend DMZ Cash to purchase Bounty Intel on a specific target. This narrows their location down to a circle on your Tac-Map. The circle is not a pinpoint — it covers an area — but it gives you a starting direction to move in.
Two things make the intel more valuable the higher the target’s Wanted level:
- The circle shrinks for higher-bounty targets, giving you a tighter search area.
- The circle updates more frequently, keeping the location more current as the target moves.
- The intel costs more DMZ Cash for higher-level targets. The reward scales up too, so the risk-and-cost balance is intentional.
How to Claim a Bounty Reward
Tracking a Wanted player is only half the job. To actually collect the DMZ Cash reward, you must:
- Eliminate the Wanted operator. Kill them in Hajin during the deployment.
- Loot their Dog Tag from their body. Every operator drops a Steel Dog Tag when killed. The tag shows their name, their Operator kill count, the bounty value, and the time of death. Pick it up from the loot screen on their body.
- Successfully extract with their Dog Tag in your backpack. If you die before exfilling, you lose both the tag and the reward. Another player can pick up the tag from your body and collect the bounty themselves.
Once you exfil with a Wanted player’s Dog Tag, your cut of the DMZ Cash bounty is added directly to your FOB Bank. You do not need to do anything else — the payout is automatic after a successful extraction.
The bounty amount you receive depends on the target’s Wanted level. Higher-tier targets pay out more. Chasing a Most Wanted operator is riskier but significantly more profitable than hunting someone who just hit the four-kill threshold.
Dog Tags — Everything You Need to Know
Dog Tags are central to the entire Wanted and Hunter system. Every operator in Hajin carries a Steel Dog Tag (Common rarity) on them at all times during a deployment.
When you kill a player, their Dog Tag appears in the loot screen on their body alongside their backpack and loadout. The tag displays:
- Name — the operator the tag belongs to
- Bounty value — the DMZ Cash payout if you extract with it (can be $0 for non-Wanted players)
- Operator kill count — how many players they have killed
- Time of death — when they were eliminated
Tags from Wanted players carry a meaningful DMZ Cash value. Tags from non-Wanted players still exist and can still be looted — but most will show a bounty of zero.
Dog Tags are also stored in your Dog Tag Case at the FOB, which unlocks at DMZ Level 20. The Case lets you hold multiple tags between deployments and tracks your Hunter history. Upgrading the Dog Tag Case increases the DMZ Cash payout multiplier you receive when claiming bounties, with upgrade tiers at DMZ Levels 30, 40, 50, and 70, adding +10%, +25%, +50%, and +100% to payout amounts respectively.

How to Remove Your Wanted Status in MW4 DMZ
Staying Wanted makes you an increasingly dangerous target. There are three ways to clear your Wanted status and bounty:
1. Die Without Extracting
If you are killed in Hajin and do not exfil, your Wanted status and bounty are lost on death. This is the involuntary reset — getting caught by another squad wipes your bounty but costs you your current loadout and any loot you were carrying. It is the harshest way to lose the status.
2. Have Your Dog Tag Taken and Extracted
If a Hunter kills you, loots your Dog Tag, and successfully extracts with it, your bounty is considered claimed. Even if a squadmate revives you after death, the tag can already be gone. If someone extracts with your Dog Tag, your Wanted status is cleared — the bounty has been paid out.
3. Pay Off Your Bounty at a Bounty Station
This is the active, voluntary reset. During a deployment, visit any Bounty Station in Hajin and spend DMZ Cash to pay off your own bounty. Once paid, your Wanted status is removed and you can move through the match without being a marked target.
The cost scales with your bounty level — a higher Wanted tier costs more to pay off. But for players who want to complete missions or extract valuable loot without the added pressure of being hunted, it is worth spending the cash to go dark.
If you resume killing other players after clearing your status, the bounty starts building again from zero. The system continuously tracks PvP activity, so clearing your name is not permanent if you keep fighting.
The Bounty Leaderboard at the FOB
Back at your Forward Operating Base, the Bounty Leaderboard Station is available from the very start — no unlock needed. It tracks two global leaderboards, both updated weekly:
Top 50 Most Wanted Operators
This leaderboard shows the 50 players globally with the highest active bounties from the past week. Each entry displays the player’s name, their current status (Wanted or Eliminated), and the DMZ Cash value sitting on their head. If a Most Wanted player appears in your deployment, their general location is automatically visible on your Tac-Map.
Top 50 Bounty Hunters
This leaderboard tracks the 50 players globally who have collected the most bounties, ranked by the total number of bounties claimed and the total DMZ Cash earned from those claims. It rewards consistent hunting over time, not just single high-value kills.
Both leaderboards are viewable from the FOB between deployments. You can also filter to see where your friends rank if you want a more personal comparison.
Tips for Wanted Players (Killers)
If you are going to build a bounty, here is how to do it without becoming easy prey:
- Know when your bounty is getting expensive to keep. The higher your Wanted level, the more Hunters will spend to find you. Check your bounty value and decide if the risk is worth holding onto it, or if paying it off and extracting your loot makes more sense.
- Change your route constantly. Hunters who buy intel get a circle, not a pin. Moving unpredictably makes that circle less useful and buys you time to reach an exfil.
- Use Bounty Stations yourself. You can visit a Bounty Station to see who is hunting you in the current deployment. Knowing how many squads are coming for you helps you decide whether to fight, hide, or pay off your bounty and go quiet.
- Prioritize a fast exfil when carrying good loot. Being Wanted while holding a full backpack of valuable gear is extremely risky. Extract early when your inventory is worth protecting.
- The Viper Sense Trait helps. It hides you from AI targeting systems, which reduces unsolicited attention while you are already being hunted by players. See the MW4 DMZ Operator Traits guide for more on useful Trait builds.
Tips for Hunters (Bounty Chasers)
Hunting Wanted players is high risk but the DMZ Cash rewards are among the best in the mode. Here is how to do it effectively:
- Check the Bounty Station immediately after landing. A free list of Wanted players in your deployment gives you an instant read on who is worth chasing. No intel purchase needed to start scouting.
- Spend intel on high-tier targets, not low ones. Intel costs DMZ Cash. Spending it on someone barely over the four-kill threshold gives you a poor return. Save it for Most Wanted or near-Most-Wanted targets where the bounty payout covers the intel cost and then some.
- Work with your squad. Wanted players know they are hunted and are typically playing aggressively or cautiously based on their experience. A full squad of three is safer to deploy against a notoriously dangerous Killer than going in solo.
- Do not forget to extract with the Dog Tag. Killing a Wanted player earns you nothing if you die before exfilling. Treat the Dog Tag like your most valuable loot. Protect it until you are off the map.
- Watch for other Hunters. If a Wanted player is on the Most Wanted board, multiple squads may be chasing the same target in the same deployment. You might be competing for the kill — and the tag — with other Hunters.
- Use the UAV Upgrade Scout Trait. Better radar coverage helps you track a Wanted target’s movement after you narrow their location with intel, letting you cut off their path to an exfil.
How the Wanted System Connects to DMZ Progression
The Wanted and Hunter system ties directly into your broader DMZ progression in a few important ways:
Dog Tag Case: Unlocks at DMZ Level 20 and stores the Dog Tags you collect. Upgrading it at levels 30, 40, 50, and 70 increases your bounty payout by +10%, +25%, +50%, and +100% respectively. Players who invest in DMZ progression get meaningfully larger rewards for the same kills over time.
Operator Dog Tags and PvP kills: Your Operator’s Dog Tag tracks total operator kills across all deployments. This is the same counter that drives Wanted status — it does not reset between matches. Your individual Operator’s kill count is separate from your overall DMZ Player Level, which runs from 1 to 70 on its own track.
FOB Bank: Bounty rewards are paid directly into your FOB Bank after a successful exfil with a Dog Tag. That cash then becomes available for Paid Infils, Vendor purchases, crafting materials, and intel buys in future deployments. Consistent bounty hunting is one of the better ways to build a large DMZ Cash reserve over time.

Wanted and Hunter System vs. Original DMZ (2022)
The original DMZ mode launched with Modern Warfare 2 in 2022 and had no persistent bounty system. PvP was entirely organic — you fought other players when you crossed paths, but there was no mechanic tracking it, rewarding it, or creating incentive to engage specifically with players who had been killing others.
MW4 DMZ changes that significantly. The Wanted and Hunter system gives PvP its own progression layer that runs independently of missions and loot. It creates a reason for some players to become aggressive Killers and others to become dedicated Hunters, and it gives peaceful operators a way to understand the threat level in their deployment through the Bounty Station and proximity alerts.
It also adds a social dynamic that the original DMZ lacked. When a Most Wanted player appears in your deployment, the entire lobby effectively becomes aware of that threat simultaneously. That changes how squads move, prioritize, and communicate — even without direct confrontation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become Wanted in MW4 DMZ?
You become Wanted after killing 4 other player operators across any number of deployments. Kills accumulate persistently — you do not need all four in the same match. Once you hit that threshold, the “BOUNTY INCREASED – WANTED” banner appears and your Wanted status is active.
How do you find Wanted players in MW4 DMZ?
Visit a Bounty Station in Hajin — look for the “BOUNTIES” icon on your Tac-Map. The station shows a free list of Wanted players in your current deployment. Spending DMZ Cash on Bounty Intel from the same station narrows down a specific target’s location to a circle on your Tac-Map. Most Wanted players appear automatically on the Tac-Map for everyone in the deployment with no purchase required.
How do you collect a bounty in MW4 DMZ?
Kill the Wanted player, loot their Dog Tag from their body, and successfully extract with it in your backpack. The DMZ Cash reward is automatically deposited into your FOB Bank after the exfil. If you die before extracting, you lose the tag and the reward.
How do you remove Wanted status in MW4 DMZ?
There are three ways: die without extracting (involuntary), have another player extract with your Dog Tag (involuntary), or visit a Bounty Station in Hajin and pay off your bounty using DMZ Cash (voluntary). If you continue killing players after clearing your status, the bounty starts building again.
What is Most Wanted in MW4 DMZ?
Most Wanted is the highest Wanted tier in MW4 DMZ. Players who reach it have the largest bounties in the game and appear on the global Top 50 Most Wanted leaderboard, updated weekly. In-match, Most Wanted players are visible on the Tac-Map to every squad in the deployment without any intel purchase.
Where are the Bounty Stations in Hajin?
Bounty Stations are scattered across the Hajin map and are marked with a “BOUNTIES” label and icon on your Tac-Map during a deployment. One confirmed location is in the Deadtown area at grid B7. Interact with the terminal on-screen prompt “OPEN BOUNTY STATION” to access the menu. For more on navigating Hajin’s key locations, check the MW4 DMZ Police Station locations guide.
