How to Unlock Avatar Kyoshi in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a question a lot of players are asking right now. The good news is that the answer is simple — you do not need to unlock her. Avatar Kyoshi is part of the base roster and is ready to play from the very start. This guide covers her availability, what makes her unique, her support options, and tips for getting the most out of her in matches.
Is Avatar Kyoshi Locked in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game?
No. Kyoshi is not locked behind any requirement. She is one of the 12 base characters included in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game at launch. The full roster includes Aang, Korra, Zuko, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Azula, Zaheer, Fire Lord Ozai, Kyoshi, Avatar State Aang, and Nightmare Korra.
Of those twelve, only two need to be earned through story mode progress — Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra. Everyone else, including Kyoshi, is already waiting on the character select screen when you boot up the game. No grinding, no special steps needed.

Which Characters Actually Need to Be Unlocked?
Only two characters require unlocking in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, and both come from playing through story mode.
- Nightmare Korra (Avatar State Korra): Unlocked in Chapter 6, “A Cold Encounter.” You play as her in the opening battle of that chapter and she unlocks automatically after.
- Avatar State Aang: Unlocked in Chapter 11, “The Battle Within.” Same process — play the story battle as him and he becomes available on the roster.
Kyoshi is not part of this list. She has zero unlock conditions. Want to get those two unlockable characters? See our guides on how to unlock Aang and how to play Korra in Avatar Legends.
Who Is Avatar Kyoshi in the Game?
Kyoshi is one of the most iconic Avatars in the franchise and one of the two villains-adjacent roster picks alongside Fire Lord Ozai — though unlike Ozai, she fights on the side of justice. She is from Avatar: The Last Airbender lore and prominently from the novel series The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee. In the game, she is voiced by Xanthe Huynh and depicted in her signature Kyoshi Warrior makeup and outfit.
Gameplay Group CEO Victor Lugo has publicly named Kyoshi as his personal main, which gives you some idea of how much care went into her design. Her towering height in the game is a direct nod to her canonically unusual size, specifically referenced in the episode “Avatar Day” and F.C. Yee’s novels.
In story mode, Kyoshi also plays a key role as one of the characters you fight as during the Ozai boss encounters. For tips on how to beat Ozai as Kyoshi in story mode, see our guide on Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
Avatar Kyoshi’s Playstyle in Avatar Legends
Kyoshi is a heavyweight powerhouse. She has the longest reach of anyone on the roster, hitting harder than most characters with her massive war fans and earthbending attacks. At the same time, she is far more mobile than you would expect from a big-body fighter.
Her signature movement tool is Dust Stepping, a unique gliding movement technique that gives her surprising aerial dexterity despite her size. She can use air bending in the air to stay evasive, and she can use all four elements in her attacks as an Avatar — though her primary element is Earth, which gives her the highest single-hit damage on the roster.
Her playstyle blends elements of multiple fighting game archetypes. She is not a traditional slow grappler. She controls space with long normals, uses armored strikes, and has a command grab that sees her summoning a stone wall and punching through it to grab the opponent. Players who like characters such as Potemkin in Guilty Gear or Marisa in Street Fighter 6 will feel comfortable with her patient, high-impact approach — but her movement tools make her more versatile than a standard bruiser.

Kyoshi’s Unique Flow Mechanic
Kyoshi has a flipped Flow mechanic compared to every other character in the game. Normally, characters drain Flow while holding a neutral stance. Kyoshi does the opposite — she rapidly regenerates Flow in neutral. The trade-off is that her special moves always drain large amounts of Flow, making her more vulnerable to becoming Unbalanced than most of the cast.
This flipped system encourages a very specific rhythm with Kyoshi. You spend Flow on powerful combo sequences, then shift to defence to rebuild it before going back on the offensive. Managing that cycle well is what separates a good Kyoshi from a great one.
Her Backwards Heavy attack (4C) is also one of her most important tools. It steps back while waving her fans and creates a vacuum effect on hit or block. You can Flow cancel it for mix-ups or combo extensions. The charged version (4[C]) has a larger hitbox, stronger vacuum, and more hitstun and blockstun — making her block strings tighter and her combos heavier. This is also the same attack that makes her the easiest character to use against the Ozai boss fight in story mode.

Kyoshi’s Support Characters
Like every fighter in the game, Kyoshi comes with three support characters. You pick one before each match. Each one meaningfully changes how she plays — not just a small stat buff, but a genuine shift in available tools.
Rangi — Powered-Up Follow-Ups
Rangi is Kyoshi’s romantic partner and a skilled firebender. Choosing her as a support enhances Kyoshi’s follow-up attacks from her Avatar’s Judgement special. Specifically, the First Flame and Autumn Bloom’s End follow-ups gain additional properties. This support is the best choice if you want to push Kyoshi’s offensive combo potential and hit heavier damage strings.
Kelsang — Double Jump and Steerable Dust Step
Kelsang was a parental figure and Air Nomad guide for Kyoshi. As a support, he improves her mobility significantly. You gain access to a double jump, more Flow cancels, and — most importantly — the ability to steer her Dust Step. Normally Kyoshi’s aerial glide moves in a fixed arc. With Kelsang, you can redirect it. This is the support for players who want Kyoshi to be harder to read in the air and more mobile in general.
Yun — Better Pillar Stomps and Steerable Avatar’s Wrath
Yun was an Earth Kingdom teenager once mistaken for the Avatar. As a support, he enhances Kyoshi’s Avatar’s Wrath special — letting you steer it in the air and feint it to bait out opponent reactions. The EX version of Avatar’s Wrath also gains more hitstun with Yun selected. This support is best for players who want to get more out of Kyoshi’s super moves and create better setup opportunities.
Kyoshi’s Special Moves Worth Knowing
Here are some of Kyoshi’s key abilities to understand early on:
- Avatar’s Judgement: A special move with follow-up attack options that change based on your chosen support. With Rangi, these follow-ups gain extra properties for heavier combo routes.
- Avatar’s Wrath: An air-based special that can be steered or feinted when using Yun as support. The EX version grants more hitstun for better combo extensions.
- Kirima’s Grace: A graceful waterbending spin that deflects enemy attacks for a short duration. If you land Kirima’s Wrath right after successfully deflecting with this move, you gain an Energy Stock and trigger a wall bounce — enabling a much stronger combo than would otherwise be possible. This only activates once per round.
- Kirima’s Wrath: A waterbending slice follow-up to Kirima’s Grace. Unlike normal Command Normals, this move cannot be cancelled into Flow Movement, so plan around that limitation.
- Chakra art: Kyoshi uses rock gloves to restrain her opponent before sending a tunnel of cold through them — a move referencing her confrontation with Yun in the “Home Again” story arc.
- True Chakra art: She splits the ground itself and drops her opponent into the formed ravine.
Tips for Playing Kyoshi
Here are a few things to keep in mind when you first start using her:
- Always respect your Flow gauge. Kyoshi builds it in neutral but burns through it fast during specials. Do not spam specials or you will leave yourself Unbalanced at the worst possible moment.
- Her Backwards Heavy (4C) is a great defensive tool. Use it when opponents push you — it covers a huge area and vacuums them in, then you can follow up or Flow cancel for mix-ups.
- Use Kelsang support if you are still learning. The ability to steer Dust Step makes her aerial game far less predictable and gives you more options in the air while you figure out her ground game.
- Kyoshi’s height is a real mechanical consideration. Her hitbox is larger than the rest of the roster. Be aware that certain attacks may reach you at distances that would miss other characters.
- When Rangi is selected as a support, she may appear in Kyoshi’s win animation — coming in for a kiss but then kicking her into a horse stance. This is purely cosmetic but a nice touch.

Wrapping Up
Avatar Kyoshi does not need to be unlocked in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. She is on the base roster, ready from your very first session. The only unlock requirements in the game are for Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra, both earned through story mode.
What makes Kyoshi worth investing in is her depth. On the surface she looks like a slow big-body character, but her flipped Flow system, her Dust Step mobility, her long-reaching normals, and her three very different support options make her one of the most interesting characters to understand. Whether you want to run heavy offensive combos with Rangi, build aerial read games with Kelsang, or get more out of her super moves with Yun, there is a version of Kyoshi that suits most playstyles. She is one of the most rewarding characters to learn on the roster.
